Ajman: The new Ajman international airport to be built by a Spanish consortium at a total cost of Dh12 billion by 2011.

The new airport is projected to achieve more than one million passengers in the first three years, according to a feasibility study by ICTS Europe and Booz Allen Hamilton.

After reviewing a feasibility study conducted by ICTS Europe, an aviation specialist and Booz Allen Hamilton, an international consultancy firm, His Highness Shaikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, said yesterday that the new airport project aims to meet the growing demand for aviation infrastructure.

"Studies show that the country needs more airports to cope with the rapid economic development and growing passenger and cargo traffic," said Shaikh Humaid.

The project will executed by a European consortium of four companies on a build operate and transfer (BOT) scheme and will feature exclusive passenger, cargo, commercial and residential areas. The new airport's operations will be dedicated 65 per cent for cargo and 35 per cent for passenger transport. Currently, the UAE has 45 per cent of the cargo service share in the Middle East.

The airport project will be built on a total area of six million square metres. The first phase of the project will consist of the main terminal buildings for arrivals and departures, runway, cargo complex aviation school, airplanes maintenance workshops, free zone and commercial area of 90 towers.

The airport will comprise airport buildings and a residential area. The project plans to cater to the fast growing air services between the UAE and the Gulf.

Driven largely by low cost carriers and cargo operations in the initial phase, the new airport expects to achieve significant international passenger traffic in five years.

Construction is expected to start by the second half of 2008, subject to approval from the Federal Aviation Authority and the project will be executed in two phases.

While the first phase is expected to be completed in 18 months the second phase could take up to 36 months.

Ajman joins the regional race to develop airport infrastructure

Air born
By Shakir Husain, Staff Reporter

When Ajman said this week that it would build an airport, the UAE's seventh such facility, it was understandable why. Aviation has long been a key driver of growth in Dubai.

The sector's development is part of an economic diversification strategy that gathered momentum almost a decade ago, and has now resulted in a wave of infrastructure projects.

Initially born out of a necessity to supplement dwindling oil income, the desire to diversify is creating new benchmarks.

With the emirate's output falling from 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 1991, no-one talks about oil in Dubai these days. The talk instead is all about tourism, and the infrastructure that goes with it.

In fact, oil or no oil, this trend has taken off across the region. Abu Dhabi, like Dubai, Qatar and Saudi Arabia understand the importance of airports in developing tourism and commerce, despite sitting on vast oil and gas reserves.

Booz Allen Hamilton, a consulting firm that conducted a feasibility study on the Ajman project, found that the development of hub airports in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha, the growth of low-cost carriers, rising expat populations and rapid economic growth will collectively support the aviation sector's rise.

In turn, says Giovanni Bisignani, director-general and chief executive of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a healthy air transport industry fuels general growth.

"Airlines are the $450 billion heart of a value chain that generates [annually] $2.9 trillion in economic activity, eight per cent of global GDP," he said.

When it comes to expanding passenger traffic, Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi appear to be working on similar propositions - to position their airports as hubs for people flying within the region and between Asia and Europe.

Expansion

Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways are aggressively expanding their flight networks and acquiring new planes to serve them.

"Trendsetting airlines from the region have successfully taken advantage of the region's location," an Airbus report says.

IATA's regional vice-president Majdi Sabri said the Gulf hubs are expanding in anticipation of continued rapid traffic growth.

"Passenger traffic has been growing at double-digit figures during the past few years, and there are strong indications that the rapid growth will continue for the coming two to three years," Sabri said. He said Gulf states are more flexible than other regions in responding to traffic growth because of the availability of financial resources and the absence of political pressures that hinder projects elsewhere.

The value of ongoing airport projects in the Gulf is estimated to be about $37 billion. While statistics on the aviation sector's wider impact on the Middle East are not available, a look at ongoing airport projects in the Gulf shows that governments see them as more than just the points of arrival and departure.

For example, the $8.1 billion Al Maktoum International Airport in Jebel Ali is part of a huge cargo and logistics hub. Its capacity will be between 120 and 150 million passengers and more than 12 million tonnes of cargo per year, making it the world's largest airport.

"What is being developed is a very visionary project. This is focused on the next 50 years plus," said Michael Proffitt, chief executive officer of Dubai Logistics City, a key part of the Jebel Ali project.

Long-term growth

Long-term economic growth is what others have in mind too. Abu Dhabi Airport Company (ADAC), which is behind the $6.8 billion expansion of 1982-built Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA), is also developing the free trade zone, which will launch the first phase in June 2008. Dubai and Sharjah both have airport free zones.

The cornerstone of airports, however, remains the growth in holiday and business travel.

In Saudi Arabia air traffic growth is driven by business and pilgrims to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.

The expanding aviation sector is also creating room for budget carriers, and executive travel, and smaller airports are bidding to serve them.

Airbus expects deliveries for single-aisle aircraft in the region to 347 by 2025 as a result of increasing traffic and the opportunities available to low-cost carriers.

Ajman had its sights set on the cargo and budget travel sectors when it revealed the $3.26 billion airport project. It expects 70 per cent of traffic to come from low-cost carriers and 30 per cent from regional flights.

Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways are aggressively expanding their light networks and acquiring new planes to serve them.

Work on Dh12bn Ajman airport to begin later this year

Construction work on the Dh12 billion Ajman Airport project is expected to begin later this year once approval is obtained from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, said a senior official.

Plans setting out the area of the project and the airport’s specifications have been submitted to the authority by Ajman Municipallity and Planning Department, Mohammed bin Omair Al Muhairi, acting assistant director-general for technical affairs, told Emirates Business.

And Majed Al Shammari, Executive Director of Spain’s White Lake Consortio, the project’s master developer, said: “The construction work will start during the second half of this year.

My company together with other Spanish and UAE-based contractors, will construct the development in accordance with international specifications.”

Al Shammari said the airport would be built at Al Manama on a desert site of six million square metres and was scheduled to open by 2011. “We are currently in the process of studying tenders from local and Spanish companies for the construction work.

The names of the companies that will be awarded contracts will be announced later.“The construction work will start with the laying of tarmac as this takes a relatively long time.

Then we will build the passenger terminal and the departure and arrival lounges. The airport will have a separate area for private and business aviation plus a staff training centre, a free zone and offices.

The management of the airport will be the responsibility of ICTC, which runs 200 international airports around the world including Frankfurt International Airport.“The second phase of the project will involve the construction of a complete city, that will provide accommodation for the employees of the operating companies.

“It will include a hotel, a business centre, schools, hospitals and a shopping mall in addition to other entertainment facilities.“We have already received offers from operators of low-cost carriers.

And the Government of Ajman is considering setting up an airline to offer services to passengers within Ajman and the rest of the emirates.”The project is expected to create 28,000 jobs and training courses will be available for nationals.

White Lake is a leading developer in Spain and the airport’s work will mark its entry into the UAE market.“We are setting up an office in Ajman and consultants, engineers and technical staff and managers will work together closely on the project,” added Al Shammari.

Cable Car Project In The Offing

Ajman is considering building a telefreek cable car project along the Corniche and Al Zawra beach area, Al Muhairi has revealed.

He presented the proposal at the opening of the three-day Urban Planning Conference at Ajman University and said that the service would boost tourism.

The plan has been welcomed by His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, said Al Muhairi. The project will be similar to the telefreek service at Dubai Creek Park. “Once it is approved we will announce the project for consultancy and construction tenders,” he said.

“Visitors will enjoy seeing Ajman’s beautiful beaches and the giant coastline projects via a telefreek ride.”

I dont think its for showing off since the airport wont be financed by Ajman Government. a private company is investing in the airport and wouldnt have invested if there would be no profit ... so showing off is not in the company's agenda.

^^Close to the coast line a new airport would be pointless as there is already Sharjah airport very close to Ajman and a little further DXB.
Btw, I was in "downtown" Ajman last Sunday, and a B 747 of Singapore airlines was taking off from Sharjah going right over the "heads" of "downtown" Ajman. I guess it was a cargo, as I am not aware of passenger flights from Sharjah to Singapore.

They have no reason to build it with all the other mega airport's next, or very close to it.

They have much bigger problem's to solve like electricity, etc, etc.

They could have had a building boom, but they did a big belly flop instead. :bash:

I could just imagine the shame Omar Sherrif has doing that commercial for them.
