View Full Version : Ice Rinks
Lydon December 17th, 2007, 01:47 PM This is an old article from 2005, but I was wondering if anything has changed since? Even if this is not the case, let's post some photos of the ice rinks that do exist.
Kenya's first Ice Rink
Panari Hotel opened its doors 12 years ago as a "top class hotel" including: impressive lobby, several shower options: including normal, multi-jet, and steam, satellite TV and internet access.
However, what makes this hotel different is inside the property is the first ice skating rink in Kenya. Up to 200 skaters can double axle and triple salchow on this 15,000 sq. ft., solar powered rink.
The only issue? At $12 per skate, most Kenyan's will never get a sniff, as the price is just too high for most.
The only other Africa countries with ice rinks are South Africa and Egypt.

Matthias Offodile December 17th, 2007, 02:24 PM Thatīs what I have been asking for, constructive contributions and not pointing out what Africa lacks and so on and so forth!
Kenguy December 17th, 2007, 04:41 PM What about Cote d'Ivoire? I thought they had one at Hotel Ivoire and its supposed to be among the oldest (it was there in the 70's and 80's I think though Im not too sure).

Yes, Kenguy, they used to have one, an Olympic size ice-skating rink (!!!) in Abidjan which was built back in the heady 70īs (the only ice-rink between Europe and South Africa at that time)...it is no longer is there, the ice has melted.... and the whole area has been converted into a place for live perfomances/events.
I guess we might see the next African ice-rink(s) in Nigeria and/or Angola. Letīs wait and see:), it was said that an ice-rink has opened in Lagos but it turned out to be a silly rumour.
Lydon December 17th, 2007, 07:58 PM Here's some more info on the rink in Kenya:
Kenyans chill on new ice rink
26/12/2005 09:57 - (SA)
Karen Calabria
Nairobi - Eager for a dose of winter, Kenyans are stepping out of blazing equatorial heat into the chill of east Africa's first ice rink.
In a country where the only snow most people will ever see is at the peak of the country's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, would-be Kenyan hockey stars and figure skaters are flocking to the Solar Ice Rink in Nairobi's Panari Hotel.
The 1 393 square metre rink opened on December 16 and has been billed the largest of Africa's three ice rinks, accommodating 200 skaters.
The rink cost nearly $700 000 (about R4.5m) to build, and has a monthly maintenance and staffing bill of $11 600(about R75 000).
Much of the expense comes from the cost of keeping the ice at a constant - 25 degrees and the ambient rink temperature at 12 degrees - in African heat.
Although Olivia Otieno, a local disc jockey who picked up her enthusiasm for skating while growing up in Canada, raves about the rink she did say there was "one thing wrong with it - it's very expensive".
In a country where about 60% of the population live on less than R6 a day, the entry fee isn't cheap - 800 Kenyan shillings (R71) for adults and 500 shillings (R45) for children.
Otieno said: "But it's a fantastic idea. Home-bred Kenyans ten years from now could be competing in the Winter Olympics, something we'd never dreamed of before."
Siggi Loeper, general manager of the Panari, has already been contacted by Kenyan schools interested in setting up ice hockey teams and is discussing the possibility of an African figure skating federation with Africa's other ice rinks in Egypt and South Africa.

Lydon December 17th, 2007, 08:02 PM I've never heard of this one before but anyway! It's the Kolonnade Ice Arena in Pretoria, South Africa:
Situated in the Kolonnade centre on the outskirts of Pretoria, this is one of the best ice rinks in the city. The arena accommodates more than 300 people and is ideal for both adults and children. There are professional instructors for those who are still new at the sport and from time to time the arena plays host to ice skating championships. Entrance fees start at R15.

stoicman31 December 18th, 2007, 07:32 PM Thats awesome news. Has anyone seen the movie Cool Running? It's based on the Jamaican '88 bobsled Team who competed in the Calgary games. A kenyan or any other African Olympic team would be even more awesome.
Lydon December 19th, 2007, 12:27 AM Yeah I've seen that movie :D It's pretty cool that our local Ice Hockey and Figure Skating teams seem to be doing quite well overseas considering it's quite a new sport here. I went skating tonight actually, I'll post some pictures if they came out well enough
Lydon December 19th, 2007, 11:58 AM OK well they turned out a bit blurry...but it was only on a 2megapixel camera phone lol so that's the reason. So here's The Ice Station in Grand West, Cape Town again...
