View Full Version : Harland & Wolff
snappel December 19th, 2007, 01:50 PM I've always been interested in the dockside industry, but recently I'm trying to find out more about ship repairing and building. I took a couple of trips up to Tyneside and found some really interesting old yards. It got me thinking about Liverpool's contribution to shipbuilding.
There's an old Harland & Wolff foundry building that is now used by Storage King near the freeport at Seaforth. There's also the HW / White Star (cafe) building not far south, near the ferry terminal. On Wikipedia, a photo caption makes reference to H&W having a yard where ships could be worked on here in Liverpool. Where would this have been? In the south (e.g. Queens, Herculaneum, etc)? Also, who owned the Canada Dry Dock - or was it always MDHC?
Also, does anybody know of any other ship repair yards, engine works, etc? Or know where the works of G. Forrester & Co and J. Jack & Co were located?
adman December 19th, 2007, 02:23 PM Have you tried www.google.co.uk ? It's brilliant. I typed in "Liverpool Shipbuilding (http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/archive/displayGuide.aspx?sid=32&mode=html&sorStr=&serStr=&pgeInt=&catStr)" Who'd have thought eh?
snappel December 19th, 2007, 02:34 PM I always try Google first ;)
I did find that link. Interesting that the actual building of ships stopped on this side so long ago. However, ship repairers and engine foundries were still in operation even after WW2.

Tony_sw December 19th, 2007, 03:00 PM Hi,
Both maps are dated 1955-7.
You may have this information.
The 1938 directory gives an address of 13 Strand Road for the H&W foundry.
I think the docks have always been owned by the MDHC.
See you,
Tony

Interesting.
Thanks a lot Tony
snappel December 19th, 2007, 04:11 PM They're fantastic Tony - just looks like a whole 'nother world. I remember when I first saw dockside maps from the early 1900s I was blown away by the density of the industry. The maps are just black with railways lines, and every other building is a ropeworks, foundry or sawmill.
Damn... how much I'd pay for a day in 1920s Liverpool... just one day...

Harland & wolff,Bootle. It's a "listed" building.
Scarecrow December 19th, 2007, 08:14 PM Isn't there another Harland and Wolff building, now used as a 'Store King' between Balliol Rd & Marsh Lane, on the dockside of Rimrose Rd? Different to the pic GV posted. :)
Think it was Harland and Wolff anyway....

Don't think so Bunny. As you'll know strand rd runs parallel to the lane but carries on down to the dock rd past the Rubber Duck.Strand rd is also home to the fire station which is also "listed", used to go there when it was the Firehouse and flames.
Scarecrow December 19th, 2007, 08:39 PM What did the store king used to be GV? It's a big old building, with a chimney, with twatty blue and yellow signage. I'll try and find a pic. :)

Don't know Bunny. I've been down there for ages, bit saddened to here the Borough is now flats and the Chaucer is closed. Some of those pubs were a bit rough:) the "munky" and the Norsey on Bank hall, not the type of hostelries to take the missus:lol:
snappel December 19th, 2007, 10:13 PM The picture above, that's the one. The chimney and twatty signage are out of shot. The other H&W building is opposite the docks - I'll get a photo when I can.
