Chapelo May 15th, 2012, 06:36 AM Sorry meh, resizing some of your pics for quotation purposes.

I can see why 3WTC was not built using Yamasaki's design. It would have looked severely dated by the time it was actually built in 1979-81. The final SOM design was better, and harmonized with the Twins.
http://i47.tinypic.com/mps1x.jpg
Apparently this contractor had ties to the mob. They were the company that was using asbestos in the North Tower before the city told them to stop using it.
http://i49.tinypic.com/o6jzwk.jpg
Fiduciary Trust had space on the 90th and 94-97th floors of the South Tower, and lost 88 people on 9/11. That means they had been in the WTC since it opened. Wow.
AdamIN87 May 15th, 2012, 04:43 PM Agreed, Chapelo. The Marriott (Vista) hotel they built was much better looking than what was originally planned.
I've always loved the pictures of the North Tower and it's antenna that were taken from the South Tower observation deck. So imposing.

meh_cd May 15th, 2012, 11:49 PM I find the older antennas like the original 1 WTC, Sears, and Hancock in Chicago to be "beefier" and easier on the eyes than the skeletal type seen on 4 Times Square and what is currently planned for the new 1 WTC.
As for that old hotel design - yeah. Yikes! The design of the lowrise buildings did not translate into a taller building at all.

Agreed. I think the antenna looked great on Tower 1. I like how one building had an antenna and one didn't. It made the two buildings easily distinguishable from one another.

Two twin skyscrapers dominating the most famous skyline in the world. Such an imposing presence.
I watched them being built and I thought they were butt-ugly from then until they came down. And the comparison with New York's gorgeous classics from the deco era only made them seem more brutal and unsophisticated.

Philip Babb Associate-in-charge
Schematic Design
In 1992 the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, owner of the World Trade Center, commissioned Davis Brody & Associates to develop a master plan for the redevelopment of the Center’s public spaces. The public spaces of the World Trade Center complex included the large open-air plaza plus 500,000 square feet of interior retail and circulation space on four different levels.
In 1994 a schematic design was developed to better define the architectural components of the master plan. These components included a monumental screen covering the existing plaza, new plaza structures adding restaurant and retail space and providing new access to the concourse level below, new street-level retail space along the Center’s perimeter and a new public park surrounding the complex.
A major feature of the redevelopment project, the plaza screen was designed to accomplish the following tasks: (1) visually define and unify a three-dimensional multi-purpose outdoor space; (2) mediate the strong cross winds created by the twin towers; (3) serve as a staging element for temporary plaza events. Hung with support cables from the adjacent towers, the plaza screen would require no additional vertical supports on the plaza or concourse levels. Visible from well outside the immediate vicinity, the support cables would serve as a symbol of the New World Trade Center.
Another principle feature of the Center’s redevelopment is the crescent shape North Plaza Building. The 60-foot tall, fully glazed structure would contain dining and interior circulation space along the northern edge of the open plaza. The design successfully creates an appropriately scaled focal point for the Plaza as it provides a single, unified identity to the various tenants and functions of the building.
The schematic design also included a refinement of the master plan’s new concourse level shopping complex. This work included the enhancement of circulation patterns and user orientation, the development of the architectural aesthetics and the integration of structural, mechanical and lighting systems throughout the retail complex.
meh_cd June 14th, 2012, 10:52 PM I didn't even know pictures of that existed. I knew it was planned and that there were going to be some kind of latticework between the towers, and there they are.
A little busy, though.
ThatOneGuy June 15th, 2012, 03:09 PM I actually didn't like that plan... It would have taken away from the incredible effect of looking directly up at the towers from the plaza.
fluxion123 June 17th, 2012, 11:37 PM Don't like it either. But I do like the "new plaza structures adding restaurant and retail space and providing new access to the concourse level below"
In an article the day before 9-11 The Westfield Group, the company that the mall got leased to, said that they were going to be "building a roof over the sprawling plaza between the Twin Towers to create more space for stores."

I always thought the Vista/Marriott hotel was not built when the towers open in 1970-71 and was built in 1981...almost ten years later, so it means it was in the bluprints long before its construction?

It was always planned, even the 1964 site plans have the hotel, but for some reason, it wasn't actually constructed until 1979-81. Probably because of the economic downturn during most of the 70s. It was redesigned by SOM before it was built; good thing too, the original design wasn't very attractive.

fluxion123 July 16th, 2012, 05:12 PM Shame that they torn down the building because it was a big box. But what other box building had a raised plaza with a bridge?
http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac249/Scardybat/130%20Liberty%20Street/637.jpg
ThatOneGuy July 16th, 2012, 08:54 PM Yeah, it was nicer than 1 Liberty Plaza, IMO.
Chapelo July 17th, 2012, 04:37 AM 130 Liberty was so trashed by the collapse of the South Tower. There's no way they could have salvaged the building. When the South Tower collapsed, it tore a giant gash down the north façade of the building. All of that dust and debris from the collapse of both towers entered the building through said gash and completely destroyed the interior of the structure. It probably could have been saved had the interior not been contaminated.
A friend of mine worked for a company that Deutsche Bank hired in 2002 to recover data from their computers and servers that were in the building. Every single computer that came out of that building was contaminated by dust, and there were about 8,000 computers in the building. I wish there were more pics of the interior of the building after 9/11, because there were a few where you could see the extent of the damage.
AdamIN87 July 21st, 2012, 07:07 PM I visited NYC last week and went to the site. I was extremely impressed with the "footprints" of the two towers. Very moving. And while I've never been a huge Freedom Tower fan, I do think it looks good when you're looking at it from far away as part of the skyline and not just an individual object. It does restore some much needed height to the skyline. This was very evident when I was viewing the skyline from Liberty Island.
The Twins are still very much alive in NYC. You see them in postcards, books, and pictures of the city that street vendors sell.

AdamIN87 July 29th, 2012, 07:45 PM When have been taken this pic?
The North Tower has it's antenna which was added in 1978, so it's no older than that. The WFC buildings were completed in 1987 and would have begun to rise in the mid 80's, but they clearly aren't off the ground in this picture. So I would say late 70's/early 80's.

Chapelo July 30th, 2012, 11:38 PM I agree, it would really add to the urban canyon feel of Lower Manhattan, and would do wonders to balance out One Liberty Plaza, and the WTC itself.
But where would you put it?
Skyscr8per August 3rd, 2012, 07:41 PM This one is even closer to the time of impact. I don't remember where this is from, but this was taken the morning of 9/11.

This might be just me, but does anyone else see a small, dark-colored object in the sky? :? Look at the farthest right building of the WFC and follow it straight to the right. Could that be American Airlines Flight 11?
On a side note, this is a very good picture of a different era in NY history. I wish I could have seen the Twins in person!

AdamIN87 August 23rd, 2012, 08:49 PM Chapelo, did you ever have any luck in securing other North Tower floor plans besides the ones posted here?
Chapelo August 25th, 2012, 12:53 AM I only have the ones for floors 93-100, never did hear back from StR on the ones for 101-105. I can post the ones for 93-100 here if you guys want.
Was there a specific floor you were looking for?
AdamIN87 August 25th, 2012, 01:48 AM I was curious about 101-105. Could you possibly do 93 if you didn't do so already?
Thanks.
Chapelo August 25th, 2012, 09:38 AM Here's the 93rd floor. We only occupied a very small portion of the floor, facing south. (the other part was occupied by Fred Alger).

Brisbane_Rulz September 2nd, 2012, 06:40 AM My mistake, looks like you were right. On floors that Marsh McLennan occupied, the core columns were usually hidden behind walls, so I'd never seen them out in the open like this.

I walked by this sign every morning on my way to the 99th floor. I hated seeing it then, but I would give anything to walk past this sign again, take an elevator up to 99, and end up in an office full of people; people who are no longer with us.
No offence, but that statement is more powerful than any speeches that will take place in a few weeks at the site. Well said.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with dreaming, I just think the TTA went the wrong way with their "Rebuild" campaign. They had the support of Trump back in 2005; they should have really done something with it. The above picture, however, is a little too disconnected from reality and probably impossible given the current progress at the site.
And since we're on the subject, even though I'm at peace with what's going up at the site, I'll still always think that they should have put the Twins right back up, but with 111 stories. That should have started the day the last pebble of debris was removed from Ground Zero. The site would have been completed years ago, and we wouldn't be dealing with a 7-story stump, nor would we be dealing with a skyscraper that may or may not be completed by 2020.

I didn't mean to say you thought there was something wrong with it, just an open ended comment. And i do agree the twins should have been rebuilt, not just for the sake of these buildings being rebuilt but for the spirit of america. Not rebuilding always signified defeat to me, terrorism brought change and we accepted it as opposed to America bringing that change.

Never happened probably because of money - usually always is. Don't trust Mayor Bloomberg one inch. That skyline was the best in the world it will never be the same with the inferior towers they are putting in it's place. At least build 2 freedom towers like before instead of those fancy out of place designs.
Rebuilding with one extra floor would be a true 'up yours' to the terrorists.
windowsoftheworld September 5th, 2012, 12:04 AM http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m9uhs1xuHm1qhyjtfo1_500.jpg
Massive in size.
One of the top characteristics of these towers worth of admiration.
Andy81 September 6th, 2012, 01:17 AM As for the new WTC1, I just hope that "Al-CIAda" and friends don't decide to use it for target practice or other (not so) 'creative uses'. I hate to say it but it'll most likely be target numero-uno once completed and functional.
Is it still mostly government agencies leasing floor space there? Hardly a vote of confidence. Then again, I'm sure the high rent and memories of what happened to the old one would be somewhat of a turn-off. You'd think so wouldn't you?
I agree the Twins should've been rebuilt - as 'memorial' towers. Similar in height and design (maybe not identical) to the Twins, but with no floors. Imagine when you stand inside the 'lobby' area and look up, all you would see is the daylight pouring in all the way up, and at night time they can be gently illuminated from the inside.
I think that would be a fitting tribute, and something to grace the skyline once again. The rest of the site can be a spread of low interconnecting buildings (no higher than, say 40 floors) to make up the new WTC site.
ThatOneGuy September 6th, 2012, 03:22 AM It's really unlikely Al Qaeda or other terrorists will bother with the site again when there are so many other unguarded buildings...

fluxion123 September 7th, 2012, 05:28 AM That is a very beautiful picture of the WTC in the 1970s, with the Bankers Trust Plaza bridge being constructed, and in a way it does look good without the hotel, a miniature plaza.

I judged this similar angle to be from the same time.

AdamIN87 September 7th, 2012, 05:27 PM flux, your pic is probably about 1977, considering the antenna wasn't completed until 1978. The antenna construction looks to still be in the early process in that pic.

The highway was demolished starting in 1982/83, but wasn't completed until 1989.

fluxion123 September 8th, 2012, 07:04 AM I read on wiki and NIST that they were originally going to put a communication antenna on both towers, thank goodness they only did one.
Chapelo September 8th, 2012, 07:38 AM Antennas on both towers would have ruined the skyline, and knowing the PA, they would have done it. Both towers could support one because of the hat truss that ran from 107-110, but I'm sure that the rooftop deck wouldn't have been possible if there was an antenna atop 2WTC, not to mention the radiation from the television/radio equipment would have been hazardous.
OneGuy, I want to say it looks like a crane mast, but it's too close to the crane on the SE side.
ThatOneGuy September 8th, 2012, 10:23 PM Yeah, one antenna was perfect. It made it easy to identify each tower, and it gave some balance.

No two buildings have ever risen so high without setbacks.
windowsoftheworld September 19th, 2012, 05:42 AM Everything has a negative side, however, it is easy to look past it considering these towers were the epitome of magnificence.
Chapelo September 19th, 2012, 06:32 AM Well said gents. The only thing I'd add is that these towers were really the embodiment of New York. You'd see a skyline in a movie with two monoliths towering over everything else, and you instantly knew that it was New York. No other city can claim that as theirs.

Chapelo September 20th, 2012, 08:40 AM The last one is definitely from Summer 2001, probably July or August. They had the banners up promoting the concerts in the plaza, really trying to liven up the place (it worked). That was also around the time they changed out the signs in front of the buildings to the red colored sign seen above.

"The world Trade Center is a living symbol of man's dedication to world peace... A representation of man's belief in Humanity, his need for individual dignity, his belief in the cooperation of men, and, through cooperation, his ability to find greatness." Minoru Yamasaki
I find it amazing how the last part of that quote describes these buildings' aesthetic appeal so accurately. These buildings were great because of the fact that there were two of them, standing by each other, looking so strong because of each other.
Chapelo September 24th, 2012, 10:24 PM That's a great quote, and an excellent analysis.

Sonic from Padova September 24th, 2012, 11:48 PM These pictures are incredible, they evoke a lot of memories...the last time i've seen the Twin Towers was 1997. It's a shame that these towers are disappeared for a question of ignorance, selfishness. When I've seen the construction area in 2010, I was embittered I've just looked up to the sky, trying to imagine the old towers.
but now everything is different. I connect WTC to a part of my life, when I was child, happy, carefree. After 11/9 the world is changed a lot. And I'm not the only one that think that this economic crisis depends on the political decision related to the facts of the 11/09

I think that's probably one of my favorite angles of the Twins. It would appear quite a bit of the design for One WTC was influenced by that particular angle.

LadyAmanita October 10th, 2012, 09:31 PM Wow, such amazing pics. Sometimes I miss those towers so much!
I remember my first trip to NYC in 2010, my hotel was in Lower Manhattan, and I remember trying to figure out what I would do on my very first day in town. (I'm not one for writing strict itineraries). It was a toss-up between going towards the two bridges nearby, or the skyscrapers of downtown. (the skyscrapers won that day, I got the bridges later) But had the Twin Towers survived their wounds (or been rebuilt), there would have been no contest, I've loved them since I was a kid and saw a picture of them for the first time, I would have gone right to them.

Apex92169 October 12th, 2012, 10:50 PM That one of Yankee Stadium is from a book called "Above New York" by Paul Goldberger, which was published in 1988, so I'm guessing those shots are from around 1987 or so. Its a great book, packed with photos from all over the city, including many of the Towers.

Chapelo October 23rd, 2012, 06:34 AM Yep, agreed. Once the WFC was completed, it was absolutely perfect. A "picture frame" of sorts for the two most iconic buildings of the late-20th century.
Unisionar October 24th, 2012, 02:47 PM Does anybody know what that thing sticking out of the center of tower 2 in the above picture was?
I always thought it was a helipad that was never used....
meh_cd October 24th, 2012, 03:40 PM I always thought it was a helipad that was never used....
Tower 2 had a very small helipad in the center of the outdoor observation deck. For Tower 1 they had to cut down a bunch of small antennas in 1993 so they could get people off the tower. They could have tried the same thing in 2001, but the window washing rig was stopped in that same corner, and coincidentally that was the only area that was relatively free of smoke.
Of course, landing a helicopter on top of a building that was burning like on 9/11 might not be a great idea. Helicopters don't do so well with heat updrafts like that. Plus it might have turned into one giant free for all since they could only take 1-2 people at a time.
Regardless, the NYPD aviation guys were told early into the attack that they weren't supposed to land. It was just too dangerous.

Yes, I knew it was impossible to land a chopper during the attacks due to the fire and smoke...
But did the towers had a helipad prior to the attacks?? for what was it used??
fluxion123 October 24th, 2012, 07:46 PM And they were supposed to tell the firefighters first and bring some firefighters with them to the roof, a new rule the firefighters made post 1993 attack because of the publicity of the NYPD roof rescues. And the roof was lock by three different doors, one had be activated from the SCC on the 22nd floor of the north tower, which according to them wasn't working from the plane crash.
There was a landing pad in both towers, one where meh_cd said to cover up the television antenna they were going to put there and the other one on the southwest side of the North Tower which was completely hidden by smoke throughout the 102 minutes.

This is a misconception.
I don't think seeing the towers intact would cause anyone pain, in fact, it would impart a very positive message, even to the families of 9/11 and i know back when donald trump was promoting his Twin Towers II plan, the 9/11 families were in support.

Well maybe "creating" the towers again would be impossible, since the security measures these two buildings should have, could never meet the size of the original towers...the wtc community saw an oportunity to start from 0 and they took it, I bet there were things that were not so funtional about the complex...still I sure miss them, they were amazing and beautiful, not only the towers but the complex itself

ThatOneGuy October 31st, 2012, 05:22 AM What I also loved about these buildings were the details that could only be seen from close up, like the gothic arches and exterior columns in the Twins, the tiny crowns and sheared corners, the gothic arched details under the overhangs at 4-6 WTC, the curved corners of 3WTC adding an art-deco element, the different forms 7WTC seemed to take from different angles, and the beautiful modernist staircase at the Deutsche. The lobbies of the twins felt like a completely different world, with the windows adding the aura of a gothic cathedral. Also their locations and site plan were perfect. They added a focal point to the lower skyline, acted as NYC's two 'guardians', and were, like a forumer said, framed by the classic buildings of old. Masterpieces, from near and far, which we will never see again.
Anybody referring to these buildings as 'bland boxes' has no understanding of architecture. :ohno:
