TWO possible temporary relocation sites are being considered for traders of the Isa Town traditional market, who will be moved soon to make way for a new BD5 million modern suq. The Central Municipal Council found two large plots of land in Tubli and off Al Estiqlal Walkway, one of which can be used by the traders.
Developer Emaar is turning the old market into a state-of-the-art suq under a project earmarked by the Municipalities and Agriculture Ministry.
The plan was originally for a 3.5m development, but this has been expanded to include more facilities.
The two temporary relocation sites for the traders will be discussed at a meeting after Eid Al Adha, said council member Abdulrahman Mohammed Al Hassan.
"The relocation of the traders is taking some time because we want to make sure that it will be on a land owned by the municipality," he said.
"We are also making sure that the relocation will not cause traffic congestions in the area."
He said the council wants to make sure that the traders do not suffer financially and that they are relocated to an easy-access site.
"We hope to see work begin at the suq by early next year," he said.
"It is also expected to take a year-and-a-half to complete work."
Emaar engineers proposed new drawings for the suq following approval from the Central Municipal Council early this year to accommodate more facilities.
The expansion includes a restaurant complex, a car park and more showrooms.
The market will accommodate 835 shops and a parking area for 650 cars, in addition to three new markets for fish, meat, vegetables and fruits.
Traders who are occupying shops and selling second-hand merchandise such as clothes, carpets, furniture, sweets, vegetables, fruits and hardware in the area are also being included in the project.
The new plans by Emaar are designed to accommodate future expansions.
