KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu's capital will get a facelift when it attains city status on Jan 1.
A supplementary fund of RM50mil is being sought by the Kuala Terengganu Municipal Council to expedite development projects in line with the capital's elevation to city status.
Council president Hussain Embong said an application for the fund had been submitted to the state government.
He said the council had been granted an allocation of RM25mil this year to implement public infrastructure projects.
“The additional funds are to enhance Kuala Terengganu as a city,” he said here yesterday.
Among the projects are new wet markets in Kedai Buluh and Gelugor Kedai, an integrated workshop in Chendering and the refurbishment of the Payang Central Market here.
“The additional funds will also be utilised for upgrading irrigation and drainage systems here,” he said.
Hussain said these projects could take a few years to complete. On the congested and narrow municipal road system here, he said a consultant had been appointed to make recommendations to improve the system.
The council is the 12th local government to be accorded city status after Kuala Lumpur, Johor Baru, Ipoh, Shah Alam, Malacca, Alor Star, Petaling Jaya, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching Utara, Kuching Selatan and Miri.
With the city status, the state government hopes to attract more investors and tourists to Kuala Terengganu.
The state capital has the potential of being the next growth zone of the East Coast Economic Region due to its vast 60,528ha area.
