A BD15 million multipurpose theatre is to be built in Bahrain, officials announced yesterday. The National Theatre Company of Bahrain will have a stage 18 metres wide and a capacity to seat 1,000 spectators on three levels.

The theatre, funded under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, will overlook the lagoon beside the Bahrain National Museum in Manama.
A conceptual design for the project was launched by officials at the museum yesterday.

"The project started three or fours years ago, but had to be put on hold and the design is a development of the work that was done then," Works and Housing Ministry housing affairs special projects head Tony Robinson told a Press conference.

"The theatre will have a lobby that will accommodate displays and functions.

"The stage has an opening that is 18 metres wide, so it can accommodate orchestral events.

"The seating will be on three levels and disabled people will have access to the ground floor."

The Works and Housing Ministry has appointed UK-based Theatre Project Consultants, he said.

Construction on the theatre is expected to begin in June next year and will be completed by June 2010.

The opening will be planned to coincide with a visit by the World Heritage Committee, said Culture and National Heritage Assistant Under-Secretary Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa.

Bahraini theatre specialist Kalthoom Amin said there was a huge demand for a theatre from actors and performers who wanted to showcase their talents.

"The theatre will also open its doors to groups from abroad and this will be a very good opportunity for actors in Bahrain to meet these people," noted Ms Amin.

She said the theatre was needed because the Cultural Hall struggled to provide all the lighting and facilities that were required by large groups, especially during the Spring of Culture festival.

"During the last year most of our events were house full and people had to go home because there were not enough seats for them, since the Cultural Hall has only 670 seats. So the new theatre will give them a chance," she said.

"There are about two to three theatre festivals in Bahrain and each lasts about 10 days, so there is a big need for the National Theatre Company.

"The Spring of Culture and International Music Festival will now be staged in this theatre."

About time.. My friend was saying just the same, while we were at the Majida el Roumi Spring of Culture event..

Only 1,000 spectators :bash: . Schools in Riyadh have a bigger capacity.

PLANS are moving ahead to create a world-class theatre complex in Manama after a series of delays and postponements appeared to threaten the project.

The BD20 million project, funded by His Majesty King Hamad and set alongside the sea near the National Museum, is expected to be completed in time for the Unesco's World Heritage Committee's annual meeting that will be held in the kingdom in June 2011.

The National Theatre of Bahrain was conceived more than six years ago by Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, now Culture and Information Minister of Bahrain.

The site once staged a 'village' and attracted thousands of visitors to an annual Heritage Festival which is to be relocated to the surroundings of genuine villages and historic homes in the kingdom, official say.

It has been bulldozed clear to make way for the construction of the new iconic cultural complex which will start next spring.

The Ministry of Information's strategic planning advisor, Manar Moh'd Sirriyeh, said that the theatre will be a landmark building that all citizens of the kingdom can look forward to with pride.

She said: 'The National Theatre is one of Shaikha Mai's dream projects. Her ambition is to accommodate and host international activities and big events in Bahrain.

'We don't have such a space now. Work is now on a very solid footing and we are at the stage of finalising key drawings. We are expecting to start work onsite by March-April next year.

'The architects have thought of it to be like a jewel ... there is a very nice foyer as you enter the building that reflects the modern-style architecture. The theatre will be built to international specifications and is designed to accommodate all activities that are related to music and theatre.

'It will be another landmark building in Bahrain.'

Discussions are taking place to hire an experienced manager for the theatre so that a trained Bahraini team can be ready and in place to make it operational from 2011.



The National Theatre of Bahrain has been designed by architects of the AS. Architecture Studio in Paris.

Architect Roue•da Ayache who has been working closely on the project said that the design of the National Theatre of Bahrain was inspired from the horizontal seascape of the kingdom.

She said that the architecture of the 10,370 sq/m National Theatre aims to complement harmoniously the site of the National Museum, thus setting a cohesive cultural district. She added: 'The main feature of the building is a stretched horizontal canopy from which emerges the main auditorium, as an island.

'The canopy is a woven aluminium structure that shades the building and its large apron overlooking the lagoon. The play of light and shadow created by the canopy echoes the glittering surface of the sea. The design of the canopy is very modern but in the same time inspired from the traditional woven ceilings that one can see in the beautiful heritage houses of Bahrain.

'The main auditorium is a focus point for the whole site: a golden shell that represents the inner world of the theatre. The golden shell is designed as a singular sculptured object, both mysterious and attractive.'

The National Theatre of Bahrain has been designed on modern lines and will seat 1,000 people. There will also be another multi-purpose theatre hall that will accommodate 300.

The stage is designed to accommodate all activities related to music and theatre including an orchestra of up to 60 musicians. All the audience seats are identical and the chairs in the front rows can be lowered to enlarge the stage.

The project is mainly designed as a theatre with variable acoustics. Acoustic devices will enable to turn it into a concert hall or an auditorium. Even the seating fabric on the planned comfortable armchairs will have an acoustic absorption role.

The design includes two green rooms as well as other facilities such as a big artists' foyer and artists' changing rooms.

The project is a team effort that has Atkins as the local consultants, project surveyors from the Ministry of Works special projects department and finally the construction company who are in the process of being contracted.

Architect Roue•da Ayache said that the location, next to the sea, has added to the concept of the design. She said: 'When we first visited Bahrain, just before starting the design of the National Theatre, we much appreciated the horizontal stretched landscape of the island, where the transition between earth and water is very smooth.

'It gave us an impression of great intimacy between the land and the sea. 'Bahrain', the two seas, the name of the kingdom sounds very poetic to us. We wanted the building to express the serenity of Bahrain's landscape where the sea and the land meet in a graceful harmony.

'The Bahrain National Theatre is designed to be at the meeting point between the land and the sea. The golden shell is anchored in the earth, while the light canopy is floating over the water.'

Describing what visitors can expect as they pass through the grand foyer and the architects vision for the ultimate visitor experience, Roue•da added: 'Shaded by the canopy, the grand foyer is a vast transparent volume that reveals the golden shell from outside and provides from inside a beautiful view of the lagoon and the sea.

'It is designed as a flexible space which could host several types of cultural events, for instance, temporary art installations.

'The grand foyer features the main auditorium golden shell where the visitor experiences the introverted world of the theatre that is focused on the stage. The main auditorium is designed internally as one continuous volume smoothly curved to provide ideal acoustics and stage vision.

'It integrates the two balconies and the ceiling in an organic shape that contrasts with the orthogonal geometry of the foyer and the rectangular horizontal canopy. The auditorium internal volume is made of wood, a warm and noble material, shaped and mounted as for a boat, reinterpreting in a modern expression, the Bahraini historical 'know how' in boat construction.'

Roue•da, originally from Beirut, is a partner at the Architecture-Studio that brings together a core of partners, architects, urban designers and interior designers in offices in Paris, Shanghai and Beijing.

The team of architects have been involved in realising several projects in Europe, China and Middle East such as the European Parliament of Strasbourg, France, Science and Technique Park in Chongqing, China and the King Abdullah Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

As for the former heritage festival which was staged on the site, the new theatre backers believe that the event can prosper by being relocated around genuine Bahraini villages and historic buildings.

Manar Moh'd Sirriyeh explained that the Heritage Village was 'fake' and was officially built as a 'one-off' attraction around 18 years ago. It then became the site of an annual event.

She said: 'It is a stage set up so we have not demolished anything historical. We don't want people to think that this was some kind of heritage of Bahrain. In fact, we want to introduce people to true traditional Bahraini villages.'

Good news, but I think it should be able to seat more than 2000 at least, or be built in a way to facilitate future expansion.

The Spring and Summer festivals proved that we need a big theatre. I didn't go to any of the Summer festival attractions because I was sure I wouldn't get a seat and I bet thousands of people had the same concerns so they abstained from going yet the performances where packed.

تطرح وزارة الأشغال خلال الأيام القادمة مناقصة مشروع المسرح الوطني والذي سيكون معلماً حضارياً بارزاً في مملكة البحرين وعلى مستوى المنطقة.
وسيتم دعوة المقاولين المصنفين كفئة (AA) لأعمال القائمة المعتمدة في وزارة الأشغال، بالإضافة إلى توقيع العقد معهم ومن المقرر إنشاء المشروع شمال بحيرة المتحف الوطني على مساحة قدرها 11,869 متراً مربعاً.
ويتجلى الهدف من إنشاء المشروع في استخدامه خلال المناسبات المحلية والعالمية المختلفة من عروض موسيقية وثقافية وغيرها، حيث روعي في التصميم أن تتسع القاعة الرئيسية للمسرح لجمهور يصل إلى 1000 متفرج .
أما فيما يتعلق بمنصة (خشبة) المسرح، فإن تصميمها من شأنه أن يتيح المجال أمام استضافة مختلف أنواع الحفلات الموسيقية، كالأوركسترا، وأنماط أخرى من العروض الموسيقية، إلى جانب ذلك، فسوف يتم بناء قاعة أخرى تتسع لمائة شخص، سيتم تخصيصها لأغراض التدريب وتغطية المناسبات البسيطة واستضافة ورش العمل المختلفة.
وتمّ تصميم مدخل المسرح بحيث يخدم عدة أغراض إلى جانب الدور الذي يلعبه كاستراحة واسعة تعتبر كنقطة تجمّع للجمهور قبل بدء العروض المختلفة داخل قاعات العرض، كما سيكون هناك مطعم (كافيتريا) متصل بقاعة الاستراحة. وتشتمل المرافق الثانوية الأخرى على غرف تبديل للفنانين وغرف لتخزين الأدوات.
وسيجهز المسرح بأحدث أنظمة وتجهيزات الإضاءة والصوت والأنظمة البصرية ذات التقنية العالية. أما فيما يتعلق بالتجهيزات الأخرى، فسوف تكون هناك مواقف للسيارات تتسع لـ 280 سيارة، إلى جانب المواقف الحالية لمتحف البحرين الوطني. هذا إلى جانب الأعمال الأخرى كتطوير واجهة بحيرة المتحف وأعمال التشجير والتزيين.
وتجدر الإشارة إلى أنّ أعمال التصميم العمراني قد أوكلت إلى الشركة الفرنسية Architecture Studio فيما يتولى مهمة الإشراف على المشروع W.S Atkins and Partners Overseas. ومن المقرر أن يبدأ العمل على المشروع في شهر يونيو من العام الجاري وينتهي خلال فترة زمنية تصل إلى سنتين.

Thanks for the link! The website actually shows a wealth of projects. apparently this theater will e the first one to be tendered out. They don't seem to be all successful designs to me though. Some are bit dull. and others just annoyingly outrageous like Hadid's museum: just another hadid building.

That external area will be great to be after presentations.

The design its self isn't my favorite kind of of but its volume and transition between inside and outside is just fine.

A great project is the one who fits its users needs.

MANAMA: A state-of-the-art amphitheatre serving as a beacon of culture is to be built in Bahrain. His Majesty King Hamad yesterday officially launched the landmark Bahrain National Amphitheatre project in the presence of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

The Culture and Information Ministry organised the event at Bahrain National Museum.

His Majesty was welcomed by Culture and Information Minister Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa and Under-Secretary Dr Isa Amin. Present were Shura Council chairman Ali Saleh Al Saleh, ministers, ambassadors, senior officials and guests.

His Majesty pressed a button signalling the launch of the project. He watched a documentary film and was briefed on the project. Three plays were also staged marking His Majesty's visit to the museum to give the go-ahead for the project. The King said the iconic scheme was a landmark monument on the path of cultural modernisation and development in Bahrain.

"We lay the foundation stone for the amphitheatre to be a key pillar of cultural momentum," he said, describing the project as a gift to people who deserve landmark achievements meeting their aspirations.

Designed according to world architectural standards, the amphitheatre will cover 86,911sqm, north of the museum lake, and comprises a state-of-the-art main auditorium capable of accommodating 1,000 people.

The project is expected to be complete in 2012 to mark Manama as Arab Culture Capital. The opening will also be held as Bahrain celebrates two other global events. In 2011, the kingdom will host the World Heritage Committee, an offshoot of the Paris-based Unesco. It will also be declared Capital of Arab Tourism for 2013.His Majesty later toured an art exhibition by Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa being held at the museum and hailed Bahrain's cultural dynamism and intellectual creativity.

So its an (open air?) amphitheater now? I thought it was a conventional theatre complex...maybe its a mistake by the press ...

The Ministry of Works yesterday signed a contract with a Cypriot contracting company for the building of the Bahrain National Theatre.

Minister of Works Fahmi bin Ali Al Jowdar, who signed the agreement on behalf of the ministry, affirmed that work on the theatre will begin soon and will be completed by July 2012. He explained that this is to coincide with Bahrain being named the Arab Capital of Culture for 2012.

The minister added that the building of the National Theatre is now set to begin following the laying of the foundation stone by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on June 30.

The theatre is being constructed north of the Bahrain National Museum on an area of around 11,869 square metres and at an estimated total cost of BD16.2 million.

Al Jowdar explained that the building has been designed in a similar manner to many major theatres around the world and will contain various multi-purpose halls and facilities, as well as a main auditorium of 1,000 seats, a flexible auditorium of 150 seats and an exhibition area.

The designs for the building were made by the French architectural firm Architecture Studio.

Following the signing of the contract, the minister yesterday thanked the Tender Board for its work and its cooperation with the ministry on this and numerous other projects.

Bahrain National Theatre to be ready next year

Bahrain’s National Theatre project, a cultural landmark in the Kingdom, is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.

Minister of Works Essam Khalaf and Culture and Information Minister Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa today visited the National Theatre site.

During the visit, Khalaf explained that the BD15 million ($39.78 million) project will be an integrated cultural centre, to be located north of Bahrain National Museum Lake and cover an area of 11,869 sq m.

‘The National Theatre is expected to attract a great deal of attention and encouragement and support from all top officials in the Kingdom, and will form the foundation for the upcoming celebration of Bahrain as the Arab Cultural Capital in 2011 and also as the Capital of Tourism in 2013,’ said Shaikha Mai. – TradeArabia News Service

CULTURE Minister Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa received Works Minister Essam Khalaf and discussed progress on the National Amphitheatre project.

She was briefed on work and materials used for the interior designs.

Shaikha Mai said that the project would be a regional landmark.

The BD19 million project is expected to be complete by July 2012.

"His Majesty has a keen interest in the cultural icon," she said.

Shaikha May described the project as part of preparations to celebrate Bahrain as the Arab Culture Capital 2012 and Arab Tourism Capital in 2013.

I wonder if they'll hold some of the future spring of culture events in this 'amphitheatre'..

I think they will, its the main festival in Bahrain imo

Bahrain’s Works and Culture ministers recently visited the BD19.1 million ($50.66 million) National Theatre project, work on which started in July last year and is expected to complete within a two-year timeline.

Minister of Culture Shaikha Mai bint Mohamad Al Khalifa explained that the launch of this unique landmark will take place in a big celebration in Manama; the Capital of Culture in 2012, reiterating the fact that the National Theatre is one of the huge projects attracting much attention and encouragement from officials in the kingdom.

“The project would not have seen the light if it had not been for the generous support extended to us by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Playwrights have always waited for a similar opportunity to stimulate creativity and allow more achievements to take place in the kingdom,” she said.

Minister of Works Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf said that the National Theatre will stand as a fully equipped cultural centre for the theatrical movement and activity in the kingdom.

Following internationally adopted theatre designs, the National Theatre will be located north of Bahrain Museum Lake, stretching over an area of 11869 sq m; providing the chance for local and international art and cultural events to take place.

I suddenly noticed, a couple of days ago, a funny looking almost spherical development near the museum.. Its weird i never noticed it before... Looks almost like one of those nuclear facilities u see on tv, hehe..it'll probably be ready soon.. but will need a further 2-3 months to be fully equipped and furnished, hence the June/July 2012 deadline..

Somebody should try to take a picture of the construction on this one..

الجدير بالذكر أن مشروع المسرح الوطني تبلغ مساحته 11,869 مترا مربع وجاري تشييده وفق أحدث التصاميم المسرحية العالمية، مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار استخدام أجود أنواع الفولاذ والخشب الأمريكي لجدران المسرح، وأحدث أنظمة وتجهيزات الإضاءة والصوت والأنظمة البصرية ذات التقنية العالية، لإثراء حركة الفعاليات والعروض الفنية التي ستعرض على أرض هذا المسرح الوطني الذي سيشكل علامة بارزة في التطوير الثقافي في البحرين. ويشمل المبنى قاعة رئيسية للمسرح تتسع لـ 1000 متفرج، كما روعي في تصميم منصة المسرح أن تتيح استضافة مختلف العروض الثقافية والموسيقية كالأوركسترا، بالإضافة إلى قاعة أخرى تتسع لمائة شخص سيتم تخصيصها لأغراض التدريب وتغطية المناسبات البسيطة واستضافة ورش العمل المختلفة. أما فيما يتعلق بالتجهيزات الأخرى، فسوف تكون هناك مواقف للسيارات تتسع لـ 290 سيارة، إلى جانب المواقف الحالية لمتحف البحرين الوطني. هذا إلى جانب الأعمال الأخرى كتطوير واجهة بحيرة المتحف وأعمال التشجير والتزيين.كما وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن أعمال المقاولة تنفذ من قبل شركة قبرص لإنشاء المباني والطرق (CYBROC)، وأن أعمال التصميم العمراني قد أوكل إلى الشركة الفرنسية Architecture Studio فيما يتولى مهمة الإشراف على المشروع ( W.S.Atkins and Partners Overseas).

وزيرا الثقافة والأشغال يتفقدان مراحل الانجاز في مشروع المسرح الوطني

عقدت معالي وزيرة الثقافة الشيخة مي بنت محمد آل خليفة اجتماعاً مع سعادة وزير الأشغال المهندس عصام بن عبدالله خلف لمتابعة مراحل العمل في مشروع المسرح الوطني الذي يقع شمال بحيرة متحف البحرين الوطني، وذلك بحضور رئيس مكتب المشاريع الخاصة بوزارة الأشغال المهندس توني روبنسون ومدير المشروع المهندس دادلي جاك هاي وعدد من المهندسين والاستشاريين.

ويمكن في الوقت الحالي للمارين من شارع جسر الشيخ حمد مشاهدة الشكل الأيقوني الخارجي لمبنى مسرح البحرين الوطني، حيث من المؤمل اكتمال العمل في المشروع بحلول منتصف نوفمبر المقبل، علماً بأنه قد تم قبل أيام البدء في أعمال تثبيت الجدران المبطنة للقاعة الداخلية للمسرح التي ستستوعب 1001 من المقاعد للمشاهدين، كما تم أيضاً تركيب المادة الحديدية للمدخل الرئيسي التي ينعكس من خلالها منظر مياه الخور المحاذي لمدخل المسرح، وتم التباحث بشأن نظام التكييف وشحنات الزجاج وخامات الجلد الخاص لأسقف المسرح وزيادة العمالة على أرض المشروع التي تمت مضاعفتها مؤخراً لتصل إلى نحو 625 عاملاً في الفترةالصباحية و70 عاملاً للفترة المسائية.

وتم خلال الاجتماع التأكيد على ضرورة العمل على تذليل كافة العقبات التي تعترض سير الأعمال بالمشروع الذي تعول عليه المملكة كمعلم ثقافي متميز، حيث وجهت معالي الشيخة مي القائمين على تنفيذ المشروع بضرورة الالتزام بالموعد الزمني المحدد للافتتاح في نوفمبر الذي يتصادف مع (شهر المسرح) ضمن أجندة المنامة عاصمة الثقافة العربية والذي سوف يشهد الكثير من الفعاليات والبرامج والأنشطة المتعلقة بالمسرح وعروض الأوبرا.

وأشادت معالي وزيرة الثقافة بالدعم الذي يلقاه مشروع المسرح الوطني من قبل المسئولين في المملكة، منوهة بالدور البارز للمشروع في التطوير الثقافي في المملكة من خلال فتح المجال أمام مثقفيها لتبادل الآراء والمناقشات الثقافية بكل مكوناتها، كما عرف به المجتمع البحريني عبر التاريخ من انفتاح حضاري.

كما نوّهت معالي الشيخة مي بأن هذا الصرح المتمثل في المسرح الوطني سيكون بمثابة مركز ثقافي متكامل يسهم في رفد النشاط المسرحي والحركة الفنية والثقافية في المملكة، موضحة معاليها أن المسرح الوطني سيشيّد وفق أحدث التصاميم المسرحية العالمية.

من جهته شدد سعادة وزير الاشغال على أن تتبدل وتيرة العمل بالمشروع إلى ما يشبه ورش عمل الدؤؤوبة اللا متوقفة موجهاً مهندسي شركة قبرص لإنشاء المباني والطرق (CYBROC) التي تقوم شركة أعمال المقاولة بضرورة الالتزام بالمواعيد المقررة لإنجاز كل مرحلة من مراحل العمل بالمشروع، منوهاً بضرورة الالتزام بالموعد المقرر لتسليم المشروع يوم 10 نوفمبر المقبل لضمان أن يتم تدشين الفعاليات الفنية والمسرحية والموسيقية التي خططت لها وزارة الثقافة ضمن برامج شهر نوفمبر (شهر المسرح).

وأضاف سعادة وزير الأشغال أن الاجتماعات الدورية واللقاءات المتواصلة من شأنها الإسهام في مواجهة أية عراقيل أو عقبات قد تنشأ خلال مراحل العمل في مشروع مسرح البحرين الوطني، وتعهد بتسخير كافة خبرات وزارة الأشغال لدعم ومؤازرة الشركة المنفذة لما فيه المصلحة العامة.

WORKS AND CULTURE MINISTERS INSPECT NATIONAL THEATRE PROJECT

HE Shaikha Mai bint Mohamed Al Khalifa, Minister of Culture held a meeting with HE Eng. Esam bin Abdulla Khalaf, Minister of Works to follow up progress of work on the National Theatre Project which is being built to the north of the Bahrain National Museum Lake.

Passers-by on the Shaikh Hamad Causeway may have a glimpse of the iconic design of the National Threatre, which is hoped to be completed by mid-November. It should be noted that several days ago work was started on erecting the cladding walls of the auditorium that will house 1001 seats for the audience. Steel works for the main entrance were fixed to reflect the scene of the water lagoon parallel to the theatre’s entrance. The discussions dealt with the airconditioning system, glass shipments, leather materials for the Theatre ceiling and increase of the workforce at the project site. Workers were recently increased to around 625 people in the morning shift and 70 workers in the evening shift.

Talks during the meeting dealt with overcoming all the obstacles in carrying out the project which the Kingdom hopes will become a significant cultural landmark. HE Shaikha Mai urged the officials in charge of carrying out the project to comply with the deadline fixed for opening the new theatre house in November, which coincides with the Theatre Month as part of the agenda of Manama as the Capital of Arab Culture.

Meanwhile, HE Minister of Works stressed the need to change the rate of work on the project to turn the site into a non-stop working area. He called upon the engineers of the Turkish Construction Company CYBROC) to comply with the proper schedule for completing each phase of work in the project. He stressed the need to hand over the project on 10th November to allow the launch of artistic and musical events as envisaged by the Ministry of Culture.

الاحتفال بافتتاح مشروع "المسرح الوطني" وتدشينه في الثاني عشر من شهر نوفمبر المقبل

المنامة في 31 أكتوبر/ بنا / أعلنت معالي وزيرة الثقافة الشيخة مي بنت محمد آل خليفة مساء اليوم عن حفل افتتاح مشروع "المسرح الوطني" وتدشينه في الثاني عشر من شهر نوفمبر المقبل الذي يمثّل شهر "المسرح" ضمن برنامج المنامة عاصمة الثقافة العربية للعام 2012م، وذلك في المؤتمر الصحافي الذي عقدته وزارة الثقافة بحضور مجموعة من الإعلاميين والمهتمين بالشؤون الثقافية والفنانين المسرحيين بقاعة متحف البحرين الوطني.

وتناول المؤتمر الصحافي تفاصيل المشروع وتطلعات وزارة الثقافة للتقديم الثقافي المغاير وتحقيق تطوير أدائي في مستوى الفنون الاستعراضية والأوبرالية، المسرحية، الأدائية، الغنائية وغيرها. وقالت معالي وزيرة الثقافة بهذه المناسبة: "نؤمن أن خشبة المسرح هي التي تجسّد ثقافات الشعوب وفكرهم، نعرف جيدًا أن الحلم الثقافي سيصير حقيقة على هذا المسرح، وقد حان الوقت الآن لنلتئم جميعًا في حلم واحد وخشبة واحدة تفتح لنا مسارات متوالية من العوالم وثقافات الشعوب وفنونها". وأضافت: "خيارنا اليوم هو الأمل والفعل الثقافي، أن نغير بالجمال وبالمسرح كل ما قد نصل إليه، وأن نحوّل الأفكار إلى واقع، فقد شكّل هذا العمل المعماري طوال الفترة الماضية رغبة حقيقية في ارتكاب المختلف والمغاير، ونبحث عن الأثر العميق من خلال المسرح".

ووجّهت في كلمتها جزيل الشكر والتقدير لحضرة صاحب الجلالة الملك حمد بن عيسى آل خليفة عاهل البلاد المفدى الذي قدّم الدعم الكريم لهذا المشروع الثقافي، مؤكدةً أن مملكة البحرين تعوّل على هذا المشروع كمعلم ثقافي وطني، يمكّن المبدعين المسرحيين والفنانين من تبادل الخبرات والآراء والمكونات الحضارية من كل أنحاء العالم. كما نوّهت بالجهد الكبير والمميز الذي بذله الفريق الهندسي بوزارة الأشغال وتعاونه مع الفريق الهندسي بوزارة الثقافة والخبرات التي تم الاستعانة بها من أجل المشروع، مشيدةً بحرص سعادة وزير الأشغال المهندس عصام بن عبدالله خلف على متابعة كافة المجريات وإصدار التوصيات الخاصة بتطوير وتحسين هذا المشروع، وإنجاز هيكله وتفاصيله بمعايير تصميمية وتقنية عالمية.

وأشارت إلى أن هذا المشروع يستكمل الآن آخر أعماله التنفيذية والتجميلية، وأن فريق العمل يباشر الآن بإنجاز آخر الخطوات التنفيذية ليتم تدشين المسرح الوطني في الوقت المخطط له في الثاني عشر من شهر نوفمبر المقبل بموقعه شمال بحيرة متحف البحرين الوطني في المجمع الثقافي. ويمثّل هذا المسرح صرحًا وطنيًا سيشهد منذ موعد افتتاحه العديد من البرامج والفعاليات والأنشطة المسرحية والفنون الأدائية وعروض الأوبرا والاستعراض، والتي ستستقطب الخبرات العالمية وتمنح المسرح البحريني حقه الثقافي في الظهور وتجاذب المعارف والفنون من مصادرها من كل أنحاء العالم.
يُعد مسرح البحرين الوطني ثالث أكبر مسرح في العالم العربي بعد دار الأوبرا المصرية ودار الأوبرا السلطانية العمانية، ويتسع لـ 1001 مقعد وهو الرقم المرتبط في الذاكرة بأجمل الحكايات من ليالي ألف ليلة وليلة، وتبلغ مساحته 11,869 مترا مربعا، بالاضافة إلى قاعة أخرى تتسع لمائة شخص سيتم تخصيصها لأغراض التدريب وتغطية المناسبات البسيطة واستضافة ورش العمل المختلفة.

كما قد تم الاتفاق مع شركة متخصصة لتنفيذ شعار المسرح الوطني، حيث قامت هدى سميتسهوزن أبي فارس بتصميم الشعار الذي يعتمد على الاشتغال الفني الحروفي ومن ثم تقديم خط مشابه وموازٍ له ولكن في صورة انعكاس، وهو مستوحى من تصميم المشروع ذاته المقام شمال بحيرة المتحف الوطني، حيث ينعكس المبنى ذاته على سطح الماء، كما تجسّد فكرة الشعار الأثر المسرحي وكونه انعكاسًا لفكر الشعوب، ثقافاتها وإرثها الحضاري.

ومنذ وضع حجر الأساس في أواخر شهر يونيو في العام 2010م، والعمل على إنجاز المسرح الوطني مستمر ضمن وتيرة سريعة، تم فيها اتباع استراتيجيات وخطط واضحة، واعتماد مجموعة من المعايير العالمية التي شاركت في تحقيقها العديد من الخبرات الشهيرة والجهات الاختصاصية. كما تم تفعيل التعاون ما بين وزارتي الثقافة والأشغال لتحقيق المنجز الوطني باشتراطات وجودة عالمية، نُفّذ فيها جهد فني خاص فيما يتعلق بالواجهات والتصاميم الداخلية الدقيقة، بالإضافة إلى اعتماد تقنيات إضاءة خاصة بالمسرح والمنافذ والمداخل للمشروع.

أعلنت وزارة الثقافة قرب تدشين «المسرح الوطني» في حفل يرعاه جلالة الملك حمد بن عيسى آل خليفة ملك البلاد المفدى الذي قدّم الدعم الكريم لتحقيق هذا المشروع المعماري، وإنجاز أول مسرح وطني يستلهم التجربة العالمية، ويكافئ الحدث المحلي برديفه لدى الشعوب العربية والعالمية. إذ يشهد غدا الاثنين الموافق لثاني عشر من شهر نوفمبر الجاري «شهر المسرح في المنامة عاصمة الثقافة العربية للعام 2012م» حفل الافتتاح وسلسلة من العروض الفنية والمسرحية وذلك بموقع المسرح الوطني شمال بحيرة متحف البحرين الوطني في المجمع الثقافي، بحضور العديد من الشخصيات الدبلوماسية والثقافية العالمية، رجال الأعمال، المثقفين والإعلاميين.
