Almaty (Kazakh: Алматы; formerly known as Alma-Ata, also Verniy, (Верный)) is the largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population of 1,226,000 (as of 1 August 2005) [2], which represents 8% of the population of the country (unofficial sources claim 2,500,900 and 13% correspondingly [3]). It was the capital of Kazakhstan (and its predecessor, the Kazakh SSR) from 1929 to 1998. Despite losing its status as the capital, Almaty remains the major commercial center of Kazakhstan.

The Almaty Financial District Fosters Towers will be the tallest building in Kazakhstan when completed. The project is scheduled to open in 2009 and will comprise of two 48 storey office towers, residential apartments and a retail element. The three combined components of the scheme will be served by a shared underground car park offering approximately 1,600 parking spaces, distributed over three underground levels.

Few architecture firms are fortunate enough to have the exceptionally high brand awareness and international reputation enjoyed by Norman Fosters and Partners, whose masterplan will change the skyline of the city with this landmark project. It will form Phase 4 of the incredibly ambitious Almaty Financial District project.

Situated to the north of the city’s major access route, Al-Farabi Avenue, the Towers site will be positioned directly opposite the earlier phases of the Almaty Financial District and adjacent to another site also being designed by Fosters and Partners – Almaty Financial District Phase 5 - primarily to offer residential apartments but also with some office and retail space.

A futuristic project has been started by ADPi at the international airport of Almaty, Kazakhstan.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2026/2248543118_0a0f0c4387_o.jpg
A combination of glass and wood, the uniqueness of ADPi's project, is to propose a building in the shape of three yurts, traditional tents used by nomadic people in central Asia. This layout will facilitate future expansion of the terminal capacities, by adding other "yurts" to the existing ones. The new terminal will absorb the important increase in traffic recorded by the airport (23% growth in 2006), for a traffic slightly over 2 million passengers. The works should end in less than two years.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2102/2248542844_44dce4ca30_o.jpg
With 32,000 m² the building can handle, at the beginning, 1,500 passengers per hour and 2 million passengers per year. ADPi will carry out studies to eventually reach a final capacity of 6 million passengers per year.

I didn't really like some of Foster's latest projects around the world, but this time the firm has come up with something interesting.

I like all the buildings (the shorter ones look very good as well), the only thing I don't like is that the glass atrium between the towers goes up a bit too high and it looks like it is too simple compared to the details of the rest of the project.

good point, it's almost 6 floors. but if it was lower I think it would not feet into diagonal lines and would look very simple.

"The idea of functional promiscuity, or mixture of uses, finds in this Kazakhstan Project one of its clearest examples. That is, a multifunctional arena, modular and adaptable to all kinds of sports and configurations and, simultaneously, a leisure center, with commercial areas and a high-rise hotel.

The winding cross section of the near mountains strongly defines the landscape of the ancient Kazak capital, something that the building evokes and conceptually reproduces, generating a unique volume under its folds. Its light concrete skin has micro-conductions of hot and/or cold water in order to help its temperature controls.

The hotel, located in the corner, has magnificent sights, setting a new architectural landmark".

Architect: Ken Yeang 2007 http://www.llewelyn-davies-ltd.com

Design Concept: With a development and area of 5.29ha, Premier City is a 300,000sqm new upmarket mix-used residential scheme in Almaty’s City centre comprising eleven 16-storey towers with approx. 700 residential units and 3 basement levels of carparking, a 40,000sqm upmarket destination retail mall, 3,500sqm luxury spa/clubhouse and a low-level neighbourhood retail promenade of approx. 7500m2.

General Design Features: Premier City will be the ‘greenest’ development in Kazakhstan. The Masterplan is based on an amalgamated distortion of the existing Euclidean Grid of the city, the mappings of strategic views towards the magnificent mountain range to the south and maximum sunlight penetration into the green heart of the development. A private and elevated garden plane links the development together horizontally while green ramps provide vertical connection between the lower-ground (drop-off) to the towers above. High-level internal sky-gardens allow year-round enjoyment of flora and a green-roof, which is also an observation deck. The development is also linked to an existing tree-lined boulevard to the south with a lifestyle promenade dotted with retail and public piazzas.

Ecological Design Features: The design of the towers and private ground plane responds ecologically to the site and exemplifies sustainable green design in climates with extreme climatic fluctuation. The towers have characteristic vertically continuous planted ‘Wind-Wing-Walls’ which function as both vertical and roof-level wind-scoops augmenting natural ventilation. Each tower has a South-facing façade with a complex ‘skin’ comprising a sandwich of internal conservatories, double-glazing and strategic external sun-shading and a Northern façade which is super-insulated but affording equally expansive views across the city centre.
