View Full Version : A Photo A Day - Tampa Bay
Robert.Maddrey December 29th, 2007, 05:14 PM This is a photo project myself and some other friends on myspace have been participating in for the last month, where we snap a random photo each day, everyday of something we encounter in our day to day lives. I thought it might be fun to do the same thing here only with a Tampa Bay theme....
I'll start it off.

Hillsborough county proactively working on the traffic lights along Fletcher Ave...a good idea right? Not, really when they end up sitting in the middle of the Dale Mabry/Fletcher Ave intersection @ rush hour on a friday.

Jasonhouse December 29th, 2007, 06:14 PM haha... We have some folks who have been doing this here with various cities for some time now... It's cool to see enough people around here that such a thing could probably sustain itself.
HARTride 2012 December 29th, 2007, 07:07 PM That's cool Robert...wonderful idea.
In fact, I have one here (which I'm also posting on the WestShore business thread).

I-275westcoastfl December 30th, 2007, 04:50 AM Hmm good idea for a thread, I keep my camera in my car so I'll remember to get pics.
thehappysmith December 31st, 2007, 05:29 PM Well, nobody posted one yesterday so I'll fill the gap. This is a heavily manipulated photo (can't you tell) from my balcony. I took 5 shots at varied apertures and time settings and used a program called qtpfsgui to combine them and manipulate. Fun stuff for the unemployed.http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/thehappysmith/CrazyTampa.jpg

What car is that Robert?
Jasonhouse December 31st, 2007, 06:42 PM Looks like a 240 that has been built up pretty good.
Robert.Maddrey January 1st, 2008, 04:08 AM Yep, its a S13 240SX with a worked SR20DET engine along with numerous other suspension and go fast goodies. Very solid car for XAT to represent themselves with.
I was kind of bummed we sold our USF Sun Bowl tickets and stayed in town but with doing this shoot and the way the bowl went, I would say it all worked out for the best.

I'd like to knock out the person who allowed the old courthouse to be destroyed. The First National Bank, The Tampa Terrace Hotel, The Tampa Morning Tribune, the Hillsboro Hotel, The Desoto Hotel.... you get the idea.
Were lucky the Tampa Bay Hotel is still there. And its not in that great of condition. I've seen some rooms in there that look like you're in a dilipdated building. The Ratheskeller is scary too because you can see how bad the structure is under the building. Its super creepy in some of those rooms. Its haunted for sure.
Does anyone have any more modern pictures of the Maas Brother's Building?

It was a bumpy ride. I always tell myself "that bridge is always a doozie". Especially when you try to make that awful last-minute merge and lane change before I-275.
But once the flyover to I-275 south is done in several months, there will be no more last-minute lane change to avoid this exit.
I think you will see Jeff, that me switching my avatars ever couple of weeks might make your head spin . For those of you wondering, yes...all my avatars (except the HARTline bus stop that I first used) are bits of snapshots of a sim that I made on the Sims 2 game.

The video I took was already enough of a risk. I basically placed the camera on my windshield, made sure it was focused, hit the record button, and left it alone. You won't see any pics from me driving over that bridge.
I agree, the view of DT and Westshore from the bridge is brilliant if the sky is perfect. I also hear that commuters traveling NB on the Howard Frankland can see the bridge from the hump. Shoot, on a clear day, I can barely make it out from the Gandy Bridge.

Hey, I miss the people mover! If it had been extended for the full route it would have made a GREAT DT circulator. It was planned to make a loop (well, more of a square) around the core of DT with the hub starting in the garage. The Harbor island line was only the first part of the plan. It would have perfectly tied into the TECO line too once it is expanded to Whiting street...then one could have transfered to the people mover and gone anywhere in the core of DT. oh well....

Yep, and I loved that thing as a kid. It was ahead of its time and removed without foresight into the future of the area. Would have been super handy to connect Element, Skypoint, etc... to HI and and CS.
HARTride 2012 February 15th, 2008, 03:18 PM Expanded Vertically? I thought it has always been the same height.
Several levels have been added to the garage. I think it occurred back in 2000 or 2001, around the time that the people mover was removed.

I agree with the both of you. Had they kept the people mover in place, it would have been extended...no doubt. The original plan was for it to loop around the city, but that plan fizzled out I believe due to financial issues.
LuvHighrisers February 16th, 2008, 02:41 PM The people mover fizzled in part because Harbor Island as a retail/entertainment destination fizzled

Yeah, that was major blow to the system also. I mean, basically all that is there now is a couple hotels, restaraunts and bunches of condos. There's like nothing else there now.
Atl Dan (via Tampa) February 20th, 2008, 07:21 PM I didn't think this would deserve a thread of its own, but I noticed today that Google Earth has updated its server for downtown Tampa. Skypoint is finished, and Element is well underway. The Place at Channelside and Grand Central are done too. Google updates pretty randomly, so you have to check kind of often. They seem to keep the same perspective angle for the Tampa Bay area. If you look at Chicago or Atlanta you'll notice that one building is leaning north, the next is leaning south, they messed with the various satalite photos to achieve the best composition.

Actually, No. I was supposed to sign up. I do the stairs every third day with the Tampa Fire guys. I am actually pretty fast, so the guys wanted me to sign up, but I never did. I have never been very competitive. You probably met my co-workers though.
tampasteve February 28th, 2008, 03:00 PM Cool beans. I did it in 12:07 so not too bad, but not great either. My friend did it in 8:53. I am going to do the one in November which is in both Tampa and St. Pete, so that should be fun. I would have trained more, but I found out about the climb two weeks before, so there was not much time. My personal goal is to do the one in November in 9:00 or less.
It really is a great experience, and not as hard as it might seem. Heck, the views from the top are worth it alone.

jonknee March 21st, 2008, 10:12 PM Speaking of Channelside, here's a shot of what I estimate as the only free standing single family home in the whole district. Could be unique in all of CBD as well.

It's on 11th, right across from the Meridian. You're right about the ones on Nebraska. I find these sort of things interesting, a little parcel that remained unchanged while everything around it grew up.
AKBTampa March 22nd, 2008, 12:55 AM I love that kind of stuff, too. Like finding abandoned railroad tracks, old signs, etc...

Thank you! I figured that pic needed no explanation! :)
I love the TBSP area and am trying to convince my husband to move there! We have taken a 10 day vaca each of the last 3 years. The first year we stayed on Clearwater Beach for 3 nights then a week in Orlando. We had found Fort DeSoto Park and fell in love with it, so last year we stayed at the Dolphin Beach Resort on St. Pete Beach to be that much closer to Fort DeSoto. We got engaged at Fort DeSoto at sunset! Again that was 3 nights then a week in Orlando. This year being our honeymoon, we stayed 4 nights at Dolphin Beach Resort (and Fort DeSoto) again then sailed the Carnival Legend out of Tampa. We used PIE for our flights.
We took 1055 total pics this year, 300+ of our time in Florida before the cruise. Last year we took like 700 total and the year before 500 total, both totals including Mickey & co. I have plenty of potential pics for this thread, the Tampa specific thread and the St. Pete/Clearwater specific thread.

snc426 July 12th, 2008, 07:10 AM if sea levels are rising a new bridge should be in future plans...not to mention larger ships they are building now
Yeah...
tampasteve July 12th, 2008, 02:41 PM True, but there are ways around the height too. Some ships can make the smoke stack (if they still call it that) fold temporarily to pass under close fits. I was on a ship with Norwegian cruise lines that did that in the Baltic. Also, even though larger ships are being built the big cruise lines still deploy heaps of medium ships, and more are being built as well. That of course does not even touch on the smaller luxury or semi-luxury lines that generally only field small/medium small ships.

If the seas rise by more than five feet during the near future we have a lot more to worry about than a new bridge so that mega cruise ships can fit under. Much of downtown Tampa would be flooded for example.

Funny!
The night you were at Pier 60, I watched the sunset for the last time in 2006 at Treasure Island and went to the British Pub kinda nearby Pier 60 for food after. (We were staying at the Quality Inn 'on the Beach'.)
The next day, I went to LBV to meet Mickey for the first time... I about cried leaving Clearwater Beach and the whole strip down to Fort DeSoto. Even though I was going to Disney. I did cry this year leaving the Dolphin Beach Resort in SPB. Even though I was about to go on a cruise. Weird, I know, but a testament to how much I love the Bay area!

DShenise July 28th, 2008, 07:15 PM Tides and natural sand movement. If the barrier islands had been left largely alone, they would change noticeably every couple years. We had pictures of Tierra Verde and Shell Island taken in the early eighties and they look radically different (Shell Island that is) than today or even the early nineties. We had some USGS maps from the mid-70s that showed islands that aren't there anymore.
