Kaneda August 26th, 2003, 06:52 PM Its okay. 6.5/10
Rob August 27th, 2003, 01:54 PM A few tall council high rises certainly add to the skyline .. but how long will they last, as most councils seem bent on pulling their residential blocks down.
RoM August 27th, 2003, 09:52 PM What is there to see?!?! theres absolutely NOTHING in those pics! 3\10
Talisker August 27th, 2003, 10:08 PM Why on earth does glasgow get such a bashing from everyone? To say that there is 'nothing' in these photographs is an utterly preposterous remark given that europe's tallest cinema can clearly be seen along with other very high quality buildings like the SECC building the Hilton hotel. I suppose I shouldn't expect anything else in a 'rate our skylines' section than blind sweeping statements and no reference whatsoever to the architectural quality etc etc. How narrow minded of people to base thier impressions of a city purely on the number of tall buildings (and glasgow has over 200) and not other aspects of the skyline. I freely admit that glasgow does not have the worlds' best skyline - I only gave it 6/10 myself - but I'm getting sick and tired of the lack of any constructive critisism in this subforum.

Labrador September 2nd, 2003, 04:09 PM Glasgow's a very nice city, but the skyline could do with some inprovement. There are plenty of highrises under 100 metres, but sadly most of them are quite dreary, and were built as part of the 'forward thinking' in the 60's / 70's. It has some excellent modern architecture though, such as the Science museum (probably the best outside of London in the country), and the SEC ('armidillo').
7/10, because I feel a bit generous. :)
Cannaton September 2nd, 2003, 05:28 PM 7/10 not entirely based on skyline, i've been to glasgow numerous times before and its a great city. As mentioned before a few commercial high rises in the centre and glasgow will look great.

Rob.
Demolition tenders have been announced for five tower blocks at Sighthill, pictured here...
http://www.stevin-art.com/images/Glasgow.jpg
All the blocks have recently been sold by the council to the government backed Glasgow Housing Association, who will invest millions upgrading some of the housing and demolishing the rest. With so many tower blocks though, they will remain a feature on the skyline for decades yet to come.. bah.
Let's be honest Zap on the basis of the pics posted above I would have given Glasgow... I dunno 3/10 maybe! Glasgow has 200+ tower blocks and they are ALL hideous. Europes tallest cinema looks great from the bus station but awful from the rear and this IS a skyline poll!!
http://www.loveofscotland.com/pics/redroad1.jpg
They look pretty in the snow though!
Victorian stuff is where Glasgow excels.

A bit like Gleegieboy said, there are so many highrises scattered throughout Glasgow which are terribly ugly when looking up at them, while the city centre itself has a great collection of lower-rise older stuff. After hearing so many negative comments about Glasgow, I was extremely impressed by the place and have now been back there two times in a year, but the skyline can do with a lot of improvement.

MAR_tm February 20th, 2005, 10:45 PM I love English cities, but looking on skyline... there's nothing special about it, too much stretched and to be honest - most of them are commies, so I'll give it 6/10
LSyd February 20th, 2005, 11:51 PM some people on this forum are a bit too obsessed with tall shiny buildings...then again, it is skyscrapercity.

centralized pandemonium February 21st, 2005, 03:51 AM Ok not bad.7 from me.
The Boy David February 21st, 2005, 09:15 PM Alas most people are right in saying that there is not much of a high rise skyline for a city with a metro population of roughly 1.5 million people. Where Glasgow excels is through the incredible Victorian architecture all over the city. It is probably the most impressive Victorian city inb the world. However, victorian architecture is not high rise, and so doubtless you guys are not very impressed by it.
Problem is, Glasgow is Huge. In a way, its like a mini(but still huge) London, with its buildings spread out over a huge area. It is too hard to get a full skyline shot of the city
So here is the best I can do when it comes to High rise shots(that actually look decent.... :))

I feel this shows the city in a better light than before, andI hope that has enlightened some people on the highrise side of things, but i must stress that the highrise buildings are not where the quality lies in Glasgow.

smaller. Other than that, I don't have to explain
jacksh%t!!(Just kidding!!!) :)
The Boy David February 23rd, 2005, 01:37 PM I personally gave it a 9, not through patriotic bias, but because I genuinely believe that Glasgow has a collection of some of the finest architceture in Britain. I wont lie to you and say that i dont want a part of the city to become high rise(I cant wait for Elphinstone Place and Elmbank Tower to be built), but I have learned to see past the big tall skyscraper way of thinking and appreciate what is really there. Check out the Glasgow Forum in the UK section of this website for an idea of what I am really talking about :)

The Boy David August 17th, 2005, 04:09 PM This thread has been left for a while so I thought I would revive it a bit. I notice that a lot of the pictures dont work anymore - tinypic is just so unreliable these days..
Anyway, I'll start with a new montage of our city skyline by 2008, done by one of our Glasgow forumers, Russell Davies. NOTE that there are currently plans for THREE 550ft (170m) towers near where the new towers shown are to be built. Only half of the skyline is shown here, and there are numorous other towers proposed and approved to be built all over the city.

On the edge of the CBD - the Hilton hotel stands at the side of the M8, one of the busiest stretches of motorway/highway in Europe. The M8 and M77 combine at one point to create a motorway with 16 running lanes of traffic. The M8 cuts right through the city centre of Glasgow much like an American Highway would do.

An Aerial Shot of what has been voted by many on this website as the UK's best Train-Station. Glasgow Central has Over-ground Heavy-rail platforms, Underground Heavy-Rail Platforms, and is also soon to be linked to St Enoch Subway Station. It also has a bus station and taxi rank, and is situated in the absolute centre of the city.

Along the North Bank of the river Clyde sits the ever-expanding International Finance District. This area is part of the CBD and whilst not highrise, is growing at a very fast rate. The gap you can see on the laft hand side is about to be built on with another 9 story state of the art office block.

ferge August 17th, 2005, 07:47 PM Lets hope they start building those towers, and sharp!!
I love the streetscenes and cityscape of Glasgow, I just think the oversized commie blocks ruin it all.. So having these new towers will stop that altogether, as Glasgow truly deserves it, after all.. it is one of the biggest cities of the UK.

Well start "buying" it - The tallest building in the montage, the blue/green Elphinstone Place has just started construction, should be finished by mid 2008, and 3 more 100m+ buildings have been proposed.
A 80m (280ft) building is soon to start construction also, along with a 79m building that is already being built.
But at the end of the day, it's the Victorian architecture that makes this city special - there's not enough of it on this thread, so I'll try post another bunch of shots tomorrow when I've got time :)
