I like shooting street scenes. What are some pointers for making good street shots? laquacherra December 29th, 2008, 03:40 PM ^^ reminds me of Larry Alcala's slice of life cartoon. i find it harder to shoot street scenes with a wide angle lens because I have this tendency of "taking it all in". i admire photogs who can pick their subjects and isolate them from their (cluttered) surroundings. i think moving in closer or zooming in helps. bariQ December 29th, 2008, 09:54 PM koya icarus, you could maybe deepen the colors :D i love slice of life pics, its like the movies, only its the real thing. i did some color editing on this and added a frame http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z100/ubecab/rosas.jpg icarusrising December 30th, 2008, 08:16 AM ^^ reminds me of Larry Alcala's slice of life cartoon. i find it harder to shoot street scenes with a wide angle lens because I have this tendency of "taking it all in". i admire photogs who can pick their subjects and isolate them from their (cluttered) surroundings. i think moving in closer or zooming in helps. Exposure Time = 20" F Number = F16 Exposure Program = Manual ISO Speed Ratings = 100 Exposure Bias Value = -1EV Max Aperture Value = F4.76 Metering Mode = Pattern Focal Length = 42mm Exposure Mode = Manual exposure White Balance = Auto white balance Focal Length In 35mm Film = 63mm f/1.8 lenses are lenses with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 - these are good for low light situations because more light can get to the sensor. also, these f/1.8 lenses can help give you nice blurry backgrounds because of their very thin depth of field when used wide open. in general, macro lenses are lenses that allow you to focus really close - within a few inches of your subject. and yup, macro lenses can be used for portraits as well as general photography. as far as i know no macro lens is f/1.8, they're usually f/2.8 max. on the otherhand, the 50mm f/1.8 can be used as a macro lens by reversing it (i think you'll need an adapter to do this) or by using a close-up filter. Did you use any star filter? laquacherra January 4th, 2009, 02:40 PM here's a sample of an f/1.8 shot. notice the thin DOF. this one was shot with an 85mm (my favorite) though the 50mm is more popular. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3113/2906455039_959d1b1e9f_o.jpg Ph Man January 4th, 2009, 03:49 PM cool! is that your spectacles ms lauren? reminds me of my shot of my spectacles. were you giving tips on fireworks photography above? i can add up something on that... some tips lang. - focus at infinity. do not use autofocus - as ms lauren suggested, use ISO 100. or if you have lower than that, go for it. you can be a little creative on the streaks of lights you want to get. you can have either thin streaks of line (use small aperture openings) or feathery streaks (use wide aperture openings). i also use the smallest aperture settings. - most fireworks shows are not photographer-friendly. i.e., they just try to amaze the audience with substantial amount of explosions. but doing fireworks is like painting - the black sky as your canvass. so objects and figures should be seen. only long exposure shots can get that for you. and we cannot expect point and shoot cams (sorry guys) to provide us with amazing outcome. 20 sec setting will be fine. but if you are photoshooting the pyro olympics, expect your frame to be overexposed. to solve that you can either: - block your lens with black object for sometime after each explosion - or set shutter speeds to the 8 to 10 sec range - use a tripod of course, or place your cam on a sturdy support A little shaking when clicking your shutter causes blurred shots. To solve this, you can: - use a remote shutter (if your cam has one) - use 1-sec self timer setting (worked for me so far), but be sure you have the right timing. you would want to shoot the explosion the moment befure it burst, or for comets, you want to frame the trail of light from the barge up. :) And finally, don't get yourself overly consumed with your gears and with you getting the best results. Relax and enjoy the experience. Fireworks shows surely do bring out the kid in us. So join the kids as they exclaim in awe in every explosion! :D Sinjin P. January 4th, 2009, 03:54 PM ^ Thanks for the tips Kuya Francis! Anyway, that "infinity" focus thing, is that feature limited to selected lenses? Ph Man January 4th, 2009, 05:00 PM if your cam has manual focus feature, that's possible. most point and shoot cams have automatic focusing feature. makes it hard to take fireworks vids or stills. Sinjin P. January 4th, 2009, 05:20 PM ^ Yeah, my 18-55mm and 55-200mm Nikkor lenses have manual focusing features but I don't know how to set focus at infinity. You won't need any zooming. You will have to take landscape photos. And lens with smaller focal distance are better at landscape photography. (Wonder why point and shoot digicams takes decent landscape photos?) Focusing at infinity. You just have to focus at the farthest possible object. That shoud be easy in DSLR. :) I onced had a fireworks photo op back in 2003. One of my first few attempts. My manual SLR cam was not focused properly. It was a disaster! Ph Man January 19th, 2009, 03:08 PM ms lauren is right. try 2 sec delay on your self-timer. or you are probably in a platform that's shaking due to the passing vehicles below. and take note also that you won't get a continuous streak of tail lights and at the same time a decent shot of the lighted park. it's either or. you have to sacrifice one of them. another technique to avoid overexposed frames would be to minimize your aperture opening. choose f/8 or f/16. in doing so, you will minimize the streaks of light that strikes your sensor. January 22nd, 2009, 11:45 AM Thanks guys. Mode: Manual Focus Mode: Manual F-stop: f/16 Exposure Time: 8-10sec. ISO: 200 Yep, I used a tripod, pero hindi 'yung tripod na tripod talaga, nakakatamad magbuhat nu'n, I just used 'yung tripod na super liit, 'yung usually binibigay ng free with the point and shoot cameras. So minsan, sa bigat, natutumba ang tripod. Ph Man January 22nd, 2009, 02:47 PM awesome shots Sinj. on your very first attempt at that! :okay: see how yuo can see some formations that cannot be seen as a mere spectator. i used the same tripod you used. you might want to try ISO 50 on your next fireworks photoshoot and compare the results. laquacherra January 22nd, 2009, 03:36 PM ^^ Francis, if i'm not mistaken, ISO200 is the lowest the D40 can go. another alternative would be to -EV compensation. i think it's impossible to go with just one setting for different sets of fireworks - sometimes they get too bright  @Sinjin, nice shots! i saw some really pretty abstracts from the fireworks set :okay: bariQ January 22nd, 2009, 05:55 PM is f/16 the ideal for fireworks? :D Ph Man January 22nd, 2009, 06:31 PM hi ms lauren, i didn't know ISO200 is D40's lowest ISO setting. i'm not familar with the ą EV compensation although I've read something about it, but really ignorant on this. the feature might come in handy for D40 since its min ISO is way too high. and yes, we can always play with the settings...depends on what outcome you want to see on your frames. :D (that also answers your question @ Bariq) for instance, this photo could have been showing a sunflower formation if this was taken with let's say 1 sec shutter speed. unfortunately, i used longer shutter speeds http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2251/2519784489_536a2fef9d.jpg and this one illustrates when 8-10 sec shutter speed is not advisable: this frame could have contained only lines of light falling from the sky if i set this to 8sec shutter speed. i chose auto setting instead: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3120/2546907321_043af06eb2.jpg it's amusing how pyroexperts have name for each of the formations. excited na ulit akong makakita ng mums, peonies, spideys...etc! dattebayo January 23rd, 2009, 11:59 AM questions.. questions.. * the lower the ISO the better the image at night? * sorry for being ignorant but how can you set the exposure settings like 8-10 secs. Exposure settings refers to shutter speed ba? * how does EV compensation work? * program mode- is there a difference with S and A mode? (can't see the difference) laquacherra January 23rd, 2009, 01:55 PM * the lower the ISO the better the image at night? the lower the ISO, the less noise you get in your photos. day or night regardless, noise will be noticeable esp in the dark colored areas of your photo when your ISO is high. * sorry for being ignorant but how can you set the exposure settings like 8-10 secs. Exposure settings refers to shutter speed ba? exposure settings is a combination of aperture + shutter speed + ISO. when you specify 8-10 sec that merely refer to the shutter speed or the Tv. * how does EV compensation work? in matrix metering, the camera meters the whole scene so when your subject is much darker than the surrounding areas the whole scene will be nicely exposed but your subject will be underexposed. so you go +EV when your subject is much darker than the background or -EV when your subject is much brighter than the background. it compensates so your subject won't be over/under exposed. * program mode- is there a difference with S and A mode? (can't see the difference) S and A are both semi-auto modes. in S mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera will pick the matching aperture for you. in A mode, you set the aperture and the camera will pick the matching shutter speed. you'll want to control either S or A in order to get certain effects on your photos - like blurry backgrounds or a sense of motion... that sort of thing. Program mode is sort of like a full auto mode. the camera picks the aperture and shutter speed. i think it picks the closest subject as the basis. so when you ask a clueless friend of yours to take a picture of you, set your dslr to program mode before you had it over to him/her. hope this helps. Ph Man January 23rd, 2009, 02:07 PM questions.. questions.. * the lower the ISO the better the image at night?- wrong. higher ISO is more sensitive to light. further details below. * sorry for being ignorant but how can you set the exposure settings like 8-10 secs. Exposure settings refers to shutter speed ba? - wrong ulit. refer ulit to explanation below * how does EV compensation work? - it's like compensating the min and max exposure capacity of your cam to extend their capability on both ends. not very familiar with this tho. :D * program mode- is there a difference with S and A mode? (can't see the difference)- when set to P(rogram) mode, your cam used its preset exposure settings depends on the light available. S is shutter speed priority. You set your desired shutter speed and your cam will choose the most appropriate aperture setting. A is aperture priority. You set your desired aperture opening and your cam chooses the appropriate shutter speed. There are times when your desired setting is way too high (or low), so your cam can only choose the closest possible setting. Cameras prompt you with a warning when this happens. Exposure is the term used to refer to the total outcome of your settings on shutter speed, aperture and ISO. You can try to play with the settings. But to save you sometime doing trial and errors, you should at least have an idea what the outcome of a certain combination will be. For instance, if you want to get sunset photos, you want to limit your exposure and may choose the following combination: ISO: 50 Shutter Speed: 1/500sec Aperture: f/8.X Assuming you don't have ISO 50, but you have ISO 200, you can use the following settings: ISO: 200 (min) Shutter Speed: 1/1000 Aperture: f/10.X Let's say you want to get a night shot of Singapore/HK skyline, which are veyr vibrant skylines, you may opt for the following settings: ISO: 200 or higher Shutter Speed: 5sec Aperture: f/2.7 The risk of using very high ISO - 400 and beyond, is the high probability of getting grainy photos. So unless you really need the highly sensitive ISO 400, 800 or 1600, try to use lower ISO settings. In fact, you can get an equally awesome shot of city skyline by using different combination: ISO: 50 Shutter Speed: 10sec Aperture: f/2.7 (widest opening) For sure photography brings out the creativity in you. Now that manual SLR is a goner, we can practice with our desired settings to know the optimal combination for a particular subject. Over time, we should learn to do things right the first time. That is, snap that scene right the first time. So, if taking night shots, in order to have a clearer subject, shutter speed should be higher (1000+) to avoid producing blurry pictures right? blurry shots are usually due to camera shake - a result of poor technique in hand holding your camera or could also be due to shutter speed not fast enough. to avoid camera shake, make sure your shutter speed is at least 1/your focal length x 1.5 - meaning if your focal length is 50mm, then your shutter speed should not be slower than 1/75. if you can not get at least 1/75 because it's too dark then you have to either use a flash or a tripod to avoid getting blurry shots. hope this helps Ph Man January 25th, 2009, 05:00 AM hehe! buti na lang wala... at least that means may natutunan din ako this past year di va? :colgate: o di ba?! @ dattebayo, flash photography is somewhat a different world with the nonflash photography. i was not thinking about flash when i gave my suggestions at the other page. buti na lang alam ni ms lauren ang sagot. kasi di ko alam. me mga formula pa pala yun? akalain mo, dito ko pa matututunan. hehe... anyway, if you are into night portraits, here's what you can do. let's say you want to take a portrait of someone with skyline on the background... set shutter speed to 2sec, then ask your subject not to move a bit after the flash. and you wil have to be still too. for flash photographies other than night portraits, follow ms lauren's suggestion. usually, auto settings will do just fine if you are using flash. but it helps to know the settings just in case you want to go manual. laquacherra January 25th, 2009, 11:18 AM our 9 month old chow chow :) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3331/3225116650_5cbf10bf53_o.jpg dattebayo January 25th, 2009, 11:33 AM thanks for the infos. im writing your posts on my notes. Now let's talk about the lens. hahaha The longer the zoom the better right? does it really improve the quality of the pics or it's only good when you want to make the subject closer? Which do you think is the best one? The 60mm, 85mm or 105mm? Thanks! IMHO, the 60 is the cheapest & the lightest of the three but the working distance is too close you'll be blocking the light. the 85 - the PCE? that's the most expensive of the three - i think US$1600! besides as far as i know, it is designed to work better with a D3. i'd pick the 105VR because it allows more working distance than the 60. hope this helps. Thanks for your useful insights. You have the 60 and the 105 right? Actually, I was actually referring to the older 85mm f/1.8 lens at P20k since I read that there's not a lot of differences between the older version and the newer one, except for the price ofcourse. Anyway, my quest for my next lens continues, LOL. I'm also looking at an UWA since most of the time, I shoot landscapes. Wynngd suggested the Sigma 10-20mm. I'll continue to read forums for more information on the different lenses so I don't buy impulsively (as if naman may budget  ). Mahirap na, krisis pa naman ngayon. And ofcourse, I'll maximize muna the use of my current lineup since it's not the pana, but the indian, as they say. :) laquacherra February 13th, 2009, 04:17 AM ^^ oh you mean the 85 f/1.8 pala? i thought you were referring to the 85 micro pc-e. the 85 f/1.8 is one of my fave lenses. the bokeh can be really nice :okay: even when i use to manual focus this lens with my D40x i hardly took it off the cam since i got it. on a DX camera this 85 is a bit long-ish (medium tele) so it may be more difficult to use indoors esp in tight spaces. also, wide open, watch out when you shoot towards a bright light because it tends to flare - more so when you use a cheap UV filter pa. close focuses around 1 meter so it doesn't make a very good macro lens IMHO. but i luv it's ability to separate a subject from it's background. btw, nikon is releasing an AF-S 35 f/1.8 for DX for around US$200 - that's roughly 10k but i expect it to be around 12k locally. good luck! Pros and cons ng VR? And what is UWA? :D Sinjin is right... VR stands for vibration reduction. the pros: handy for when you can't hold the camera steady. you can set your shutter speed 2 to 3 stops slower with VR. the cons: usually bulkier lens. VR is useless when you use a tripod (you have to switch VR off). VR is useless when your subject is in motion. Sinjin P. February 17th, 2009, 12:53 PM ^ Welcome to SSC, vanjhnn. Btw, vanjhnn, like myself, is a member of the Cebu Bloggers Society (http://www.cebubloggers.com) laquacherra February 18th, 2009, 01:43 AM Ive been using kit lens for as long as possible. question: does it really vary in quality to those super expensive lenses? question number two: what does 4L mean in Canon lenses? 1. sadly, yes, you do get what you pay for. BUT that is not to say that kit lenses are bad. GENERALLY, with the super expensive pro lenses, you'll get sharper, less distortion and better contrasty photos esp when shot at wide apertures. BUT when you shoot at f/8, both kit and pro lenses generally yield the same image quality. so keeping the cliche about the indian and the pana in mind, know the weakness of your gear so that you can maximize it's full potential. 2. i'm not familiar with Canon (I'm a Nikonian ;)) but i know for sure that L in Canon is their "luxury" line - read: expensive. further, i think the 4 stands for a constant f/4 maximum aperture. hope this helps. vanjhnn February 18th, 2009, 10:09 AM thanks:D that did help a lot.. hmmm.. interesting about the f/8 thing.. Sinjin P. February 18th, 2009, 11:29 AM f/8 = the sweet spot? I've read about the sweet spot in a lot of forums but I never had the time to actually test my lenses if f/8 is indeed the sweet spot. I've read about the sweet spot in a lot of forums but I never had the time to actually test my lenses if f/8 is indeed the sweet spot. Based on your experience, is there really such a thing (sweet spot)? :D hmm. interesting. I always set my aperture at f/8 as a my default setting. Im planning to get the lens that you have sinjin. (f/1.8) I read laquachera's post that the wider the aperture value the sharper the image so im investing one :D downside is that there's no autofocus but that's fine. how much did you pay for it? i think it's more than $250. yikes! Sinjin P. February 18th, 2009, 01:25 PM ^ I think the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AF-D is the cheapest lens in the Nikkor lineup. Is there any possibility that our faces may find a place in that 'book'? What a bright idea. However, I think there's some element missing in your photos. I suggest you shoot your subject on an eye level. They don't have to be flashing their sweet smile. And if you want to include the whole of metro manila in this photo op, you'd better step back a little and try to include some of the surroundings. Just my two cents. :D Oh, when you finally decide to launch your book 2 project, include us in your subs. Hehehe... phichanad April 4th, 2009, 11:07 AM Hi, I have no experience in photography as an art, I only use it for work or events purposes. But I would like to start by first buying my first DSLR. I have shortened my choices to 3 models, the Canon 1000D, Nikon D60, and the cheapest is the older Nikon D40X. What would be the best choice from these camera? Since most of you here guys know better regarding the differences of these models, maybe you can share your suggestions on what to buy. Or maybe you have other model suggestions beside these 3 models. Thanks very much! anakngpasig April 5th, 2009, 03:57 AM Tell us more about this book project. Since most of you here guys know better regarding the differences of these models, maybe you can share your suggestions on what to buy. Or maybe you have other model suggestions beside these 3 models. Thanks very much! Let's stick with your 3 shortlisted options. Between Nikon and Canon, I'd go for Nikon for DSLRs. P&S and prosumer cams will be a different story (where I prefer Canon). And between D40X and D60, I'd say go for something higher - the D80! :D Seriously, the ND series gets more features as it goes up. So D60 should perform better than its 40X cousin. I heard D60 is now priced at as low 28K? With this model, I am sure you get all the functionalities you would want in a DSLR. anakngpasig April 5th, 2009, 02:55 PM Wow! amazing! Will it come out in limited edition? it's not a coffee-table book but i wish it is. :D it is sort of a journal but with photographs. proceeds will all go to charity but i'm not part of the circulation team so i don't know yet how many they'll be printing. all i know is that, like the last journal, this will be distributed not just in the Philippines but also in other countries. Ph Man April 6th, 2009, 06:09 AM :okay: good work @ anakngpasig laquacherra April 8th, 2009, 09:50 AM http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3595/3417484635_04dacc889d_o.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3598/3417503341_1fb33a116a_o.jpg habagatcentral1 April 13th, 2009, 03:19 PM Thinking of buying a dSLR by Christmas...Nikon D40 or D60? |
