Nice shots Ate Lauren! What fisheye lens are you using?

@Bernie: They're basically the same. The only significant difference is the pixel count: 6 megapixels for the D40 and 10.2 megapixels for the D60. Anyway, the pixel count won't matter if you're not going to print large copies of your photos. :)

^^ I see...the price was reported to be only a few thousand pesos daw...and what lens will I use as an "all purpose lens" which will basically cover from portrait to landscape to low light and night shots, etc? I would like to begin first as a starter for dSLR rather than going on "specialized" lens which gives specialized results, for me kasi parang another level na yung specialized lens...

@sinjin, thanks! :) it's the 16mm nikon fisheye.

@habagatcentral, i believe that the prices of brand new D40 and D60 will drop by second half of the year because Nikon is releasing a new entry level dSLR - the D5000 - so it'll be a good time to buy one.

I'm looking for a Panasonic Lumix ZS1/TZ6 camera in RP. Anyone knows a store in Manila who sell the latest Lumix cameras?

This camera is available in ebay but it's location is HK. Mga magkano ang tax kung ~P16,000 and camera?

I think everyone here does post-processing here in their photos..well, not all but some or mostly. Lets face it, we do this and some ethical questions are raised regarding the "ethics of post-processing." I'll be a hypocrite if I say I don't do it.

Some said that this is very "un-artist" and unfair to the photographers who alter photos for the sake of art and it does alter reality, making reality more of a "fantasy." Others say that a bit of enhancement would not hurt reality as manifested in photography.

Which is which?

This is a post I made in the LuzViMinda thread after one of our fellow forumers made a comment to another forumer. The comments of the former did raised some questions about the ethics of post-processing.

As amateur or professional photographers, what is your say about this topic?

;35802234']Im sorry if some of you took offense against my post regarding post processing, napansin ko lang naman na minsan some shots that use much post processing eh medyo parang may colors na sobrang matingkad (in the pic I commented eh napansin ko ang green) and nawawala ang shadows

Sometimes (to me) as a viewer eh nasisira ang pics kasi (personally) I like yung natural na itsura ng subject

But as Bernie says, its an art..then so be it
This would be my last OT regarding this topic. Sometimes it depends on how the camera processes colours. It depends on who captures the shot. The importance in photography, even within the ethics of photojournalism, is that there is nothing altered in the reality that it displays, except some visual enhancement. I think almost every professional photographer that I know does post-processing nowadays "to enhance" and "not to alter."

Anyway, I think this would be more appropriate if we move the discussion about post-processing photography in Photography 101 thread...huwag na lang idelete ang discussion na to but i-move lang. This seems to be a nice topic to divulge in. :)

I'll have my statement reposted in Photography 101 thread so that a more deep discussion may be discussed there.

Hello guys, this is my first time to post here in Photography 101. i've been following this thread in the archives, now reading page 39 out of 120+ pages

i recently got myself a Nikon D60. i don't know much about the settings (poor me hehe)... on the photo posted above, i was using automatic mode. i've always been using it. i hope i can attend a formal class in photography soon, i don't feel good not having the knowledge to use my cam properly

i would really appreciate comments on how i could have done better with this photo. :)

I know nothing about photography and i just based my comments on my lay mans observation..

On that particular photo, napa comment lang ako kasi parang makulimlim ang panahon pero matingkad ang ibang colors like the trees, some greens and reds then nawala ang shadows dun sa green columns malapit sa brown trellis

If I hurt the photographer sa comment ko then Im sorry.

actually, even without post processing, you can get vivid (matingkad) colors in your pictures by boosting the saturation in the camera settings. kanya-kanyang taste lang yan. i myself go for more natural colors but that is not to say i don't like pictures with vivid colors. art is always a matter of one's personal taste.

if you shoot with auto modes, the pre sets that came with the camera sometimes boost the vividness/saturation depending on the mode you picked.

ang problema lang sa vivid colors, di sya maganda i-print. at least that is what the "teacher" at the workshop i attended said. i think the problem lies on the limitations of ink.

on the subject on whether it is right or wrong to do post processing, i think all the professional photogs i know do. and they're experts in softwares like photoshop & lightroom. post is also known as the digital darkroom. i dunno if you guys realize that PS stuff like dodge & burn among others were actually derived from developing processes back in the days of film.

One thing why I do post-processing is that I'm using a point and shoot camera that has a limited settings to manipulate with. I myself personally like vivid and warm colours and at the same time, "contrasty" black and white/monochromatic. It depends on what subject am I gonna process. Some others don't need processing as it satisfies my preference on the photo.

it was explained on my flickr about the weather condition during the time I took the pic. it was summer hot/bright sunlight while at the same time raining or about to rain thus the dark clouds. i don't know why there should be shadows on the green columns near the trellies waway. the raw file (unedited version) clearly shows no alteration or change of shadow position, etc.

second, the scene is indeed colorful. the buildings are really that colorful. the plants are also really that green  that's why people who've been to the place don't really notice anything over-enhancement with the picture, as the place is already "naturally vivid", filled with strong colors.

I've been using Photoshop ever since I could remember. I use it most of the time basically for cropping and adding watermarks and I am not denying, I do sometimes make some adjustments for detail enhancements specially when I'm doing Glamour photography which I think most of the photographers in this field do. But at times I do drastic post processing to make an actual effect that will be obvious to everyone.

I have nothing against post processing and only the individual will know if its too much or not.

i forgot to mention that for those of us who shoot RAW (like moi :)), post processing isn't an option, it's a must. basically, we're taking full control rather than allow our cameras to process the raw files.

and i agree with Ash - i believe every one has the freedom to do as he pleases with his photos :)

The thing here is that is it ethical or unethical to edit pictures? What are the parameters of "committing a photographer's sin" or a much stricter "photojourn's sin" as what they say?

Because I am also into post-processing. Most of my photos are post-processed enhanced because my intention is to bring out the colours or something out of the subject. Since my P&S camera's feature is limited yet I've been wanting to achieve at least dSLR quality.

It is something that I ask because it may be called "cheating" by professional photographers since "it does not capture the natural thing."

@Boyet, again there is nothing wrong with you commenting...It is something that I have to ask for opinion of the others as well.

laquacherra

^^ i wouldn't consider editing as cheating... to me, it's another form of art.

i guess it all depends on what the photo will be use for - say you're joining a photo contest where there's always a set of rules.

in photo journalism, photos will have to be more factual. again, that doesn't restrict photogs to create some sort of effects to emphasize what they'd like to say in the photos. some convert it to minimalist b/w. take wynn, i like his treatment of his PJ shots - they're edited for emphasis but i wouldn't call it cheating.

and my question wasnt related to my earlier post naman..tinatanong ko lang paanong may tama or mali sa photography..to me tama lahat yan (unless of course yung mga cases na ineedit ang photo for malicious purposes lol)

^^ Actually yes...Another photog friend did say that some of my photos are overdone...especially in colours. The problem is that I really would like to see my photos in such a vivid way that is somehow a cross between what is reality and what is fantasy...this is how I interpret my photos...I would like to exude such warmth and exaggeration on it because I like to...especially in seemingly dull photo that is taken.

In other words, I have the option to have it exaggerated and others aren't. It depends on me on how to interpret it, as long as it does not alter reality as manifested.

Maybe if I have a dSLR, post-processing would be lessened as compared to now.

Actually I like this thing of scrutiny. It feels like I'm back in front of the thesis panelists during the first draft presentation. In order to have it improve one must stand the comments, may it be subtle or harsh, to produce a good thesis. :)

Of course, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder and opinions are very much welcome...basta wag lang personalan. :D

Berns, if you feel that post processing or editing is a form of cheating, then don't do it. Often times, your conscience will dictate you whether what your doing is ethical or not.

Back in highschool days, I've only heard of the ethics of choosing a subject. With the advent of post processing softwares, the guidelines are yet to be written. But we don't really need one. We know what's outrightly wrong and what's not. Most are falling in between. Then you'll be do the judgment.

In the meantime, you would not claim something is there when in fact you just made it appear it's there in the photo. Then that's cheating. Don't be overly concerned. ;)

Let's take HDR images for instance. They appear appealing, even wow me at times. Why, they look way better than the real thing. But others may not be as amused. One might ask - do you really need the HDR to get good images? Can you not make something based on "what you see is what you get" principle? Goes to show that preferences differ from one person to another. What one considers as an "art" is really a form of "trash" for others. That holds true not only in the world of photography...i.e., visual arts, but also in other forms of art.

Kanya kanyang trip lang yan...

Also, criticisms in art and mostly everything we see is good...as long as it is constructive..basta wala lang personalan na "Amapangit ng gawa mo, sing pangit ng ugali mo" thingies, hehehehe!!! :nocrook:

It is in the way that we develop our skills...much like artists do. Again, photography is also a form of art. :)

And..I wouldn't stop post-processing since I believe I don't cheat people...bahala na sila mag-appreciate, as long as I express what is it there. Like literary writing or painting, photography does not need only just to be within the bounds of reality but let your imagination wander and bask in the beauty of art. :)

what's that effect ms lauren? may naka mount ba sa lens to have the effect? was that taken somewhere in Luzon? noticed that most of our beaches in the island are very rich in iron (black) sand. visayan beaches are rich in limestone (white).

Vince, didn't notice the rest of your photos until Ms Lauren mentioned "last photo." wouldnt you mind editing your post so they are aligned vertically? and congrats for the new DSLR! i like your rose photo. it looks just fine having the sub in the center. but for the rest - you can place them off center following the rule of thirds. ;)

^^ IMHO the shots of the cat and the dog are okay :okay:

yung tree shot naman, i would have preferred not to cut the people at the waist level. ok rin naman sana kung buo sila coz mas ma emphasize yung size nung tree.

that last one sayang out of focus. pagtyagaan mo magbasa ng manual kahit nakakaantok - it's important. what you can do nalang is to read first only that part that you need - like for now, how to focus. next time na yung iba.

actually, even without post processing, you can get vivid (matingkad) colors in your pictures by boosting the saturation in the camera settings. kanya-kanyang taste lang yan. i myself go for more natural colors but that is not to say i don't like pictures with vivid colors. art is always a matter of one's personal taste.

if you shoot with auto modes, the pre sets that came with the camera sometimes boost the vividness/saturation depending on the mode you picked.

ang problema lang sa vivid colors, di sya maganda i-print. at least that is what the "teacher" at the workshop i attended said. i think the problem lies on the limitations of ink.

on the subject on whether it is right or wrong to do post processing, i think all the professional photogs i know do. and they're experts in softwares like photoshop & lightroom. post is also known as the digital darkroom. i dunno if you guys realize that PS stuff like dodge & burn among others were actually derived from developing processes back in the days of film.

agree to this....

besides, in my opinion, post processing, at least the part where you manipulate the RAW image saturation, brightness, WB, sharpness, shadows, etc. is what point-and-shoot cams also do automatically on the captured image, before compressing and recording it, those with dSLR's on the other hand, prefer to do this manually. (opinyon ko lang ha... hehehe)

In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of luminances between light and dark areas of a scene than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows.

This method was developed to produce a high dynamic range image from a set of photographs taken with a range of exposures. With the rising popularity of digital cameras and easy-to-use desktop software, the term HDR is now popularly used[3] to refer to this process. This composite technique is different from (and may be of lesser or greater quality than) the production of an image from a single exposure of a sensor that has a native high dynamic range. Tone mapping is also used to display HDR images on devices with a low native dynamic range, such as a computer screen. (wikipedia)

I went to CCP this afternoon to take some photos to use for HDR, and here are the results. Images are rendered using Photomatrix Pro 3.1, camera used is Olympus 795SW

You will be needing an IR filter or a costumized IR camera. Been trying IR too, but I dont get satisfactory effects most of the time. Di pa rin lumalabas ang kulay na gusto ko. Kelangan pa kasing i costumize ang white balance nito, which I havent tried yet. Binawi ko na lng sa post processing. Here's some of my sample pics.

The first model, Victoria is a Russian while Nivine is a Lebanese. Nivine was a little bit conscious with the people around watching her. She is a muslim thats why but she's very willing knowing that she comes from a conservative family.

Most of the people around here have very strong features unlike people in some Asian countries. :D

Tried doing IR with WB costum settings calibrated on a green grass with IR filter attached. It made more greens to appear pero ang blue very minimal pa rin. Di ko nakuha ang white foliage effect. Siguro dahil mababa na ang araw at cloudy nung time ng pagshot ko. Here are my shots... same loc.. Hehe.

I've blown up my late Lolo's photo 2 weeks ago in Columbia Store in SM Megamall. They have higher price per photo compare with fujifilm but the quality is a lot better.

My problem with fujifilm is that their machine is not well calibrated to create an output similar to what you see in your monitor. If you're a semi-pro or pro photographer, I suggest you go to Columbia or JTPhoto. http://www.jtphotoworld.com/

yup, the nikkor micro/macro 105VR + a raynox 250 macro conversion lens. it's not possible to get that kind magnification with just the micro/macro lens.

i've no experience with 3rd party lenses so sticking with nikon the next best thing is the 80-200 f2.8 AF-D BUT this won't AF on the D40/x/60/3000/5000 and no VR.

another alternative is the 70-300VR AFS - of course, that's if you can live with the smaller max aperture. hth

^^It is a telephoto lens. It can be very useful in taking paparazzi shots with high depth-of-field results.

Kent, how much is a D5000 now? My sister is a newbie and I'm planning to buy her a DSLR. :) Nice sea summit shots. :okay: I was confused at first. The rocks looked like they are islands and the sea is like a sea of cloud. Hehe...I didn't know you can use long exposure for sea shots.

Ms Lauren: while your shots are still loading in my screen, I thought the palms are flowers of weeds. I'm a BIG fan now of your IR shots! Very nicely composed, and very crisp. :okay: Tell us if you have plans to stage them in an exhibit. :D

^^ Hi PHman, I got mine from US, it costs me around 35k including tax. Christian (xtian) knows a shop here in PH where you can purchase this within the same range. Last time I checked the cam in normal shops, it costs around 50k.

Thanks for liking the Sea Summit collection. I borrowed the sea/ocean long exposure from a friend. It's good if you have a surging wave and lotsa of hitting points.

Thanks for the suggestions! After covering Sinulog 2010, I just noticed that the 70-200mm (whether Nikon or Canon user) was one of the most used lenses by the photographers. I've searched for reviews and there are really a lot of raves about it but the price tag is P100,000++

Hi lauren, what do you think the best combo for D5000 - for normal photography. Currently I am using a normal lens kit and planning to buy a good one by mid this year. What would you recommend? Hmmmm... I am going for macro shots (for now)... and wildlife photography later on.

TIA

google mo digital infrared photography... you'll come up with lots of sites teaching the basics also, sa flickr meron din. hth.

kayang kaya ng kit lens ang panning :) focus on a moving subject and try to follow it's movement while you take the shot. hth.

Kent, for wildlife you'll need a telephoto so if your kit lens is 18-55 or 18-105 i think ok to go for a 55-200VR but i think mas ok yung 70-300VR. for really close macros i find a macro conversion lens works better over a regular macro lens pero sobrang shallow ang DOF. i have a raynox dcr250 macro conversion lens and it works great with telephoto zooms. btw for IR filters, try digital walker at the malls - they carry LVSHI brand filters which i believe is cheaper than hoya. hth

^^ Not bad for starters! Actually it's a good job for a first timer. I haven't tried doing this myself, although it was taught at basic class. Since the ideal setting is 1/15 or 1/30 sec, expect a sort of overexposed outcome. I wonder if smaller aperture openings can fix this.

@dattebayo, i agree, not bad for starters! yeah make your aperture smaller (bigger number) - that will darken your exposure. find a faster moving subject - to blur your background even more. good luck! :)

@kent, a macro conversion lens is actually an attachment that is mounted on the front end of your lens. normally a telephoto lens has a minimum focusing distance of about 5 or 6 feet. a macro conversion lens attached allows you to focus less than a foot hence you get a greater magnification. here's what it looks like

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/11QqKCwJ5cL._SS500_.jpg

http://www.amazon.com/Raynox-Macro-Scan-Conversion-Universal-Diameters/dp/B0002YBXBY

also, this is a much cheaper alternative over a macro lens but comparatively, it has a very limited use - it's really only good for super macro close shots. hth :)

@dattebayo, we were actually walking towards opposite directions. i spotted her coming, got my zoom ready and took a shot as she walked by me ;)

"Tilt-shift photography" refers to the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene.

Sometimes the term is used when the shallow depth of field is simulated with digital postprocessing; the name may derive from the tilt-shift lens normally required when the effect is produced optically.

[Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilt-shift_photography)]

Tutorial on how (http://www.tiltshiftphotography.net/photoshop-tutorial.php)to do this using PhotoShop, called miniature faking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_faking):

Miniature faking is a process in which a photograph of a life-size location or object is made to look like a photograph of a miniature scale model. Blurring parts of the photo simulates the shallow depth of field normally encountered in close-up photography, making the scene seem much smaller than it actually is; the blurring can be done either optically when the photograph is taken, or by digital postprocessing. Many faked-miniature photographs are taken from a high angle to simulate the effect of looking down on a miniature.

^^ Oh cool, another info added to my photography world. So does this mean that I can mount this to 18-55 lens? Right. If that's the case then I will just try this one first and later na lang bili ng macro.

On one hand, anyone here have tried the reversing lens or something like that to do macro?

Hi again everyone, okay, I would like to share this last batch of my January 2010 Collection. By first week and second week of March I will post my February 2010 Collection. I hope I can learn more about Photo enhancement by that time.

One thing, I noticed though, when the exposure of a photo is not right, it's really difficult to manipulate or enhance it through photoshop, so before delving into photoshop make sure to get the right exposures of your shots.

Here you go the last collection

Haggardness! This is my first HDR and I don't like it. When doing HDR one should think of the following:

1. Steady tripod. The tripod that i bought is not that good. Gumagalaw ang cam ko.

2. Shutte release. minimize movement while doing various speed shots of the same scene.

3. Make sure to get the right exposure, overexposed and underexposed to get good quality HDR.

I used Photo Merge as HDR module of Photoshop.

^^ Thanks JM! Kunin ko lang yung settings sa ViewNX ko. Share ko dito in a while. Yes, lahat sila pinadaan ko sa Photoshop para hindi flat looking. You have to Sharpen the images kasi yung raw from Cam ay flat looking. Some of them, I fixed the levels or curves. Others as is except for sharpening lang. Yung iba na mag tinge ng brownish yellow na color, I applied certain layering effect to give more drama.

February 19 | By Peter Phun (http://rising.blackstar.com/it-may-be-time-to-give-up-photography-if.html) | Posted in Art of Photography

Every year, it seems to get harder and harder to make a living as a photographer. And yet every year, more and more people purchase DSLRs with the intention of doing just that.

So I figured it might be helpful to provide a reality check for those who are wondering when the big money is going to start rolling in.

Here are 25 clues it’s time to give up on your photography career:

-You still can’t get a picture accepted by iStockphoto after maxing out your credit cards on gear.

-Your contest entry in the “feline” category, captured during a thrilling photo safari on the plains of the Serengeti, loses out to a picture of a cat napping on a sofa.

-When your studio is burglarized, all your photo gear is taken along with the picture frames and mattes — but your photos are mysteriously left behind.
Upon hearing you’re covering the local beauty pageant, the suddenly camera-shy contestants scramble to revoke their model releases.

-Your photos always run big in publications — not because they’re great images, but because the editor needs a long caption to explain what the picture is about.

-Brides gladly pay extra to remove your watermark from their pictures.
When you travel abroad with your camera, street urchins pay you to not take their pictures.

-After scanning your portfolio, the organizers of the workshop you want to attend inform you they are fully booked — even though the venue is the Rose Bowl.

-Your unretouched images are frequently featured at PhotoshopDisasters.com.

-A memory card of 64GB is not enough when you’re shooting jpegs for an hour-long assignment.

-Facebook doesn’t use your uploaded images, even though your privacy settings are set for everyone to view.

-A kid with a cellphone nails a picture of the Loch Ness Monster while you stand there chimping by the lake.

-Despite shelling out big bucks for the latest vibration reduction or image stabilization lenses, your pictures are still fuzzy when you shoot in broad daylight on program mode.

-You’re not sure if it’s possible to disable autofocus, red eye reduction, auto white balance and program and still take a picture.

-You think “depth of field” refers to the depth the local humane society requires you to bury your pet.

-You spend thousands of dollars attending workshops to master a certain effect, only to find out there is now a Photoshop filter or plug-in that achieves that same look.

-Every time you get a color space mismatch warning in Photoshop, you think it’s asking you to change your clothes.

-You don’t realize you can almost fake the bokeh of a lens using Photoshop’s Gaussian blur filter.

-Adobe relents and gives you a full refund — on the condition that its tech support staff never has to deal with you again.

-Your competition does better with a chroma key backdrop than you can with lighting gear and models on location.

-Whenever you order 20 x 30 prints from the local photo finishing lab, they call you because they assume there’s been a mistake.

-Your spam filter captures more solicitations for photography workshops than Viagra prescriptions.

-Your spouse books another photographer to do her portrait — and it’s not a boudoir session intended as a gift.

-The biggest fan of your online portfolio, who is currently incarcerated, obsesses over your geotags.

-Clients ask you if facial-recognition software is included with the package they bought — and they’re not being sarcastic.

Hopeless naman na talaga to. Kakaawa naman. And 64GB is really not enough for a one-hr all-jpeg photoshoot?

Hehehe...

"I have a reverse coupler that allows me to mount an ancient 28mm lens in reverse to the front of my Tamron 90mm macro lens. Doing this is like using the reversed lens like a microscope on the end of your camera, so an object ~10mm across will take up the whole frame, or one that's 5mm or less with a 2x teleconverter."

@dattebayo, i've never tried it but AFAIK the coupler allows you to attach a reversed lens to your camera - in other words baligtad, it's the filter end of your lens that is attached to the cam body. this will allow you to focus really close and the DOF will be super thin. but the thing is i don't know how you can set the aperture. try to google it. hth

the cam body itself will be ok since a lens is attached... however contact end of the lens will be vulnerable to bumps and dirt so you have to watch out while you use it reversed.

i get by stuff from diff sources depending on where i find what i want and the price of course - i've cdsc, i've gray too (pixel pro, digital walker & other local stores), also from HK.

hello

im thinking of buying a good prime lens, the wonderfully cheap yet superb nikon af nikkor 50mm f/1.8d for about a hundred $$$.

my question is, for everyday / general photography, and mainly for convenience, what would be the most ideal 2nd lens for me.

a. Nikon 55-200mm VR or
b. or the versatile, all-around 18-200mm VR (either Nikkor or Tamron)

or shall i stick with my kit lens?

i'll appreciate all your inputs and thoughts.

if you aren't missing the tele focal lengths, then opting for a good low light lens to complement your kit lens would be a good choice. and if your camera doesn't have the in body AF motor (D40/x/60/3000/5000) I suggest you buy the AF-S 35 f/1.8G instead of the 50 1.8 because from my experience, manual focusing can get tedious after a while esp. with dx cams' small viewfinder. the af-s 35 f1.8 is the modern dx version of the old 50 1.8 - acting like a "normal lens" on dx cams. good luck! hth

true. I also suggest the 35mm f/1.8 lens. I ve been reading alot of good reviews about it. Just also google some sample shots of the lens. Wish I bought that lens first before buying my 55-200mm lens coz ive been doing more indoor shots.

Firstly, thanks for the response, i really appreciate it.

i have a D90 body and i want to compliment it with a starter prime lens. and i think i can never go wrong with the 50mm 1.8 f for just $112, i mean it is relatively cheap, and I've read it's also good in low light and essentially, i will get more bang for my buck. i can always get the 35mm once i mastered the intricacies of using prime lenses.

now i know i cant just shoot using that lens and my im thinking of getting a good fast lens for general and all-around photography, because my kit lens, well, ain't fast enough...and let's admit it, it pales in comparison on all aspects compared to a premium fast lens.

My dilemma is whether to buy a versatile lens with a focal point that ranges from 18 to 200mm or just a lens that starts with 55 up to 200mm.

as usual, all inputs will be well appreciated

@bergenscooterpatrol, IMHO, no other lens can beat the versatility of the 18-200mm esp for travel or general walkaround. Nikon expert Thom Hogan said that IQ of an 18-55 + 55-200 combo is better than that of 18-200. i guess that will matter only if you're a pixel peeper.

the minimum focusing distance of the 55-200 is around 5 ft while the 18-200 can focus pretty close - if i'm not mistaken at less than 2ft. - which makes the 55-200 more "limiting" if you were to take just one lens with you.

@jude and kent, thanks!

kent, those were from a Manny Librodo (http://www.pbase.com/manny_librodo) workshop. i highly recommend taking basic photography with pro photog Jo Avila (http://web.mac.com/misterkodaker/Jo_Avila/Welcome.html). i've read lots of books before taking basic and had a very good grasp of the basics - exposure (ISO, aperture & shutter speed), composition, etc... or so i thought but as it turned out there was a lot more to learn even from a basic photog workshop so i'd recommend starting there. also, check out FPPF (http://photoworldmanila.com/) for their workshops. although i haven't tried taking any of them, i wouldn't hesitate trying them out if they were more easily accessible for me. hth :)

^^ I checked DPP forum and I am not seeing any available workshop yet.

Okay, based on my photos here, do you think I need to read more and practice more before taking these workshops? I would like to solicit your opinion. I am looking into Nathaniel Salang's workshop by next month.

Most of my shots are trial and error, I mean I have to waste one or two shots before I can get the right exposure. I would like to achieve the "one shot correct exposure" thingy.

Also, I want to explore more photo enhancement. I like your second photo. I like the overpowering glow of white hue.

^^ Kent, that's called a high key treatment... i've a currrent fascination for it :)

here are Jo Avila's April weeknight (http://web.me.com/misterkodaker/Jo_Avila/Seminar_Schedule/Entries/2010/2/15_April_2010_Basic_Photography_Seminar%28Weeknight_Sessions%29.html) and sunday (http://web.me.com/misterkodaker/Jo_Avila/Seminar_Schedule/Entries/2010/2/15_April_18_%26_25%2C_2010_Basic_Photography_Seminar%28Special_Sessions%29.html) sessions. he continuously offer basic workshops so if you can't make it in April, check out his May and June (http://web.me.com/misterkodaker/Jo_Avila/Seminar_Schedule/Seminar_Schedule.html) skeds.

i learned to shoot RAW and basic post processing from him.

i really think it will help you effectively absorb/learn more from the basic workshop if you continue to shoot, study & learn from your shots and master using your camera before you join the workshop otherwise IMHO all those workshop infos can be overwhelming for an absolute newbie! (i've a friend who went back to shooting a p&s after taking basic :D)

don't worry about getting the right exposure from just one shot... esp when it comes to landscapes - it's really more about compromises... pros bracket their shots too.

I learned to bracket my shots lately.

Yes, that's one thing I want to learn, shooting RAW and processing RAW. I think editing is much more dynamic in RAW.

I already sent my registration to Jo Avila's seminar. :D I like how he criticized one of my shots in DPP. :D

On Manny Librido.. gosh, I have to go to Bangkok to have a one on one session with him. Hehe hehhehe... maybe someday. :D

^I'm experimenting on Single Image HDR, since my camera does not have auto bracketing feature. I take a photo in RAW format then I use Aperture to create 3 versions of the photo with 3 different exposures. Then I merge the three versions using Photomatix.

I found these settings for Photomatix, it works for me. :okay:

Luminosity 0
Strength 46
ColorSaturation 68
WhiteClip 0.25
BlackClip 0.00000
Smoothing High
Microcontrast High
360Image No

Tapos konting tweak na lang sa sharpness, etc.
