galing... i should get that lens for a nice macro...
laquacherra February 12th, 2008, 04:09 AM ^^ yup, definitely worth it if you're into macros... my kit lenses as well as my trusty point & shoot can't focus as close

jbkayaker12 February 12th, 2008, 09:55 PM ^^^^^I like the first shot, perhaps it need a bit more cropping or when your aim is to focus on the flowers just zoom in a bit more next time you take a similar shot.

Is this comment for my photos? anyway, if it is, thanks! In the second photo, I was trying to practice the rule of thirds, and wasn't really going for an uber- macro shot. :)
But I'll keep that in mind, try to shoot another flower in a more up-front manner.
thanks again!
laquacherra February 13th, 2008, 06:45 AM ^^ i like the first picture too...

i don't like the shadow in the middle ^^ bit distracting IMO
jbkayaker12 February 13th, 2008, 09:05 AM I've always loved this shot even long before it was given national attention by those holier than thou elements of society here in the USA. Of course I had to edit it to suit my liking. It's an ad campaign for a major clothing retailer.

You're right. The shadow tends to distract. I'll keep that in mind next time. :)

I read about this. Hehe. Much ado over nothing, IMO.
Photoshoots of this brand are really nice. Always a throwback to old rural America.
laquacherra February 13th, 2008, 10:04 AM ^^ sorry i live in another planet hehe! i think i can hazard a guess what the fuss was about if i knew what jbkayaker edited :) but, i agree the photo is nice.
jbkayaker12 February 13th, 2008, 10:15 AM Here is the original photo (not mine), ad campaign for the clothing store. I don't frequent nor do I own a single piece of clothing from this store but I like this picture. BTW the edited photo above was my shot taken today.
http://www.photobucket.com/albums/v635/jbkayaker12/2007PICS/af.jpg
laquacherra February 13th, 2008, 10:22 AM ^^ i like it in black & white... er, i guess wrong... can't see what the fuss was all about
jbkayaker12 February 13th, 2008, 10:41 AM To some people, half naked models with butt crack showing is offensive. I say wake up and find out what's on tv, movies, video games.....If parents are worried their teenagers will get the wrong message looking at the picture then I guess they are not doing their parenting skills well.
jbkayaker12 February 13th, 2008, 10:51 AM My lunch today, sushi in the desert, hehehehe.

laquacherra February 14th, 2008, 04:11 AM not so creepy crawlies :colgate:
here's a roaming ant going from one flower to the next...

The clarity of the ant is better on this shot and considering you want to emphasize its presence on the flower, I prefer this shot.

I was bored today so I took a shot of the framed art in the dining room.

indoor! your cam can really zoom :okay: reminds me of what my Dad said about the 70-300mm lens I've been eyeing... "pang paparazzi ba yan?"  he's a wide angle person that's why hehe!
laquacherra February 15th, 2008, 07:37 AM no flash as usual, ambient light was a mix of warmwhite & coolwhite CFLs...

jbkayaker12 February 15th, 2008, 10:45 AM Great flower shots and I like the anther as if it was floating.
---
Regarding my shots, the ambient lighting on the framed art was natural daylight. I opened the blinds in the dining room. It was right before noon when I took those shots.
Here is a shot I took on the way to work today. This ad campaign of a show in Vegas is enormous. It was posted on the side of a parking garage. It's safe to say it is around 4 or 5 floors high and even wider. Looking back I should have a taken a shot of the garage as well. Take a close look at the light post on the lower right hand side, that is the top portion of a street lighting.

Taking shots at night time one need patience and one cannot take hurried shots. The only time I go on the Strip is when my friend and I go out for a meal. He's not very patient and he's always rushing me all the time but one of these days I'll take a trip on my own.
This is a show on the Strip, the billboard is not the best quality. I still like Zumanity. Anyway.......

jbkayaker12 February 18th, 2008, 08:02 AM You can shoot any subject, anytime and when you're taking shots of people, make sure there is a head above the shoulder otherwise people might think your shots are meant to scare them. Shots of children without heads are scary, hehehe! (wink! :) wink!) It is even scarier if people think it's a great shot.

Photography at times is about exploring and capturing a subject the moment it catches your attention. Photography can be planned and it can also be random, so as often as possible I take the camera with me.

laquacherra February 29th, 2008, 03:31 AM @jbkayaker, it's in morong, bataan (not far from subic)... i took those shots in the morning so there weren't many people around yet. also, it's a members only club and they're sort of trying to limit the number of people there at any given time to make visits to the beach club a more enjoyable experience. in less than a month when schools are out i'm sure there will be more people in the area.

Do you always shoot with ISO 200, your first photo is at ISO 200 and the nightime shot at Greenbelt was also at ISO 200. I try to set my cam as low as possible like 100 or a 64 ISO to make the shots less grainy especially outdoors during daytime since it wont hurt the clarity and exposure because of natural bright light.
I took these shots at ISO64 during daytime. Random subject and a not so random shots.:) I was on my way to the car and I noticed it on the pathway so here they are......

jbkayaker12 March 3rd, 2008, 08:58 AM @laq
Just an observation, in most if not all of your beach photos one thing I noticed are the trees and how you butchered the trees. Next time you take shots of the trees try to include a full shot of the tree without chopping the top and try not to show just the trunk as well. Even if your subject are not trees it is always nice to see a full tree than looking at a trunk or just a butchered canopy.
laquacherra March 3rd, 2008, 11:16 AM ^^ better trees than people IMO hehe! j/k... yup, noted.

hi @jb...
thanks for the info
I havn't adjusted the ISO of the camera that time coz those shots were only taken randomly the first time I got it. I'm still trying get use to the feel of handling such heavy camera. I aslo have a D40 but this one (D300) is half as much as the weight of my old DSLR. :)

The clouds were nice but the structure and the electric post nope. The flower is the size of a small guava.
@cq
If you want to invest in a camera, no need to buy expensive DSLR just buy an Advanced Point and Shoot camera. I use a Kodak Z712 and just comparing photos here show there is not much difference.
JB Photography (http://www.webshots.com/user/jbkayaker)
laquacherra March 5th, 2008, 07:34 AM ^^ i wanted to add a sense of scale and the only available foreground where i was at just happen to be uninteresting... but IMO they added contrast - ugly vs beautiful in addition to small vs vast.
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i37/llaurenversion3/urbanity/ladybug2.jpg
jbkayaker12 March 5th, 2008, 07:42 AM Composition was way off so the comparison was not at all conveyed but rather it only distracted the cloud formations which was the main subject of your shots.
Cute Beetle!

kennethologist March 11th, 2008, 05:56 PM this is the first time i'm sharing for the photography thread in a veery long time... i do mostly portraits XD ...these were shot on Film and digitally processed using Lightroom... these shots was done using a Nikon f3... super manual camera (like kinakasa pa) but it never fails to amuse me when i do portraits... because unlike DSLRs today, it can do a very shallow depth of field!

:D
laquacherra March 12th, 2008, 06:55 AM ^^ shooting film is expensive...wow! :okay:
isn't depth of field dependent on aperture, focal length and camera to subject distance? digital point & shoot have great depth of field BUT not so with dSLRs because i can get very shallow depth of field with a 105mm at f/2.8 at a little less than a foot from the subject.
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i37/llaurenversion3/urbanity/small%20world/flash.jpg

yup... but usually on DSLR and P&S cameras, DOF on digital is somehow light and distance dependent... the camera still has control on how big the aperture can go... even when set at manual. that's why i love the control when i use a uber manual film SLR.
those (the pics i posted) were shot with an aperture of f/1.4 to 2.8.... with a distance of more than 5 feet from the subject.
...on average, i spend less than 300 pesos per roll of film... P100 (actually less than that) on film, since i do mostly portraits, i usually buy a Kodak ProImage100 or Colorplus200... it's real cheap! tapos processing costs about P150 (50 for the DO, 100 for Digital Scanning) :D

to some extent you're right about the camera controlling the maximum APERTURE... esp when one is dependent on aperture or shutter priority paired with made for digital lenses... but IMO not with those f/2.8 pro lenses or one can always opt to use full manual settings... also, old AF lenses work with Nikon dSLRs like the 50mm f/1.8 AF... i get max aperture when i want it naman :)
i'm very impressed with people who choose to shoot film... they've got very little room for error IMO... galeng! :okay:

For a portrait shot, the UST Main building in the background is taking too much space. I understand you want to show the depth of field on your shot but somehow the compostion was a bit off.
Here are my flower shots for the day. The tiny and fragrant lavender blooms of Rosemary. Original shots and non photoshopped. It would be a waste of time taking shots and then altering it with photoshop or any other photo enhancement softwares. This is one advantage of using a digital camera, you are able to see the shots made and make adjustments as necessary.

I guess I've been around the campus of UST long enough having lived nearby at my grandmother's home. Yes, that is a bug and I did not mention it because it is not as pronounced or clear on the shot.
@kenneth
I like the campus of UST, it is a treasure chest of photo ops. Not only the main building but all around the campus there are plenty of subjects that can be captured on camera.

I like my photos the way I see it and not altered because it defeats the purpose of taking quality decent photographs if everyone will opt to alter or enhanced the original shot.
As far as your portrait shot, you can still showcase the depth of field on your cam settings in a more subtle way.
This photo is not ideally focused as I want it to be as shown with the "no go red dot" on the cam but I still took the shot because I like the composition.

jbkayaker12 March 21st, 2008, 06:39 AM ^^^^Nice garden, regarding your shots, it seems like you have an idea about depth of field, just practice taking more shots isolating your main subject or the main focus of your shot.
As far as composition, try to minimize the distractions on your shots and try to have a main subject that will capture the attention of the viewer.
Have fun and goodluck!

tanong ko lang kung what you are trying to show or convey sa mga tao with that pic? :) if it's a portrait, it should at least show the character of the subject. imo, mahirap kasi nakapikit yung mata ng bata.

I have never been to Disneyland here in the US but I have been to Kings Island which is a theme park and a water park. I have no inclination whatsoever in visiting Disneyland and I have lived here for over 20 years.
Your flower shot is similar to what I took at the park last week. Ill post it later, in the meantime this one I'm posting was a difficult shot for me. It was windy, the flower was so tiny and the stalk was moving sideways, it was difficult to focus the camera but I managed to get a shot that I really like. Patience is definitely a virtue when it comes to macro photography.

It would have been nice if they were all facing one side but not necessarily toward the camera. What is that thing above the guys head? It would have been nicer also if the grass were even in both the bottom and top part of the shot.
jbkayaker12 March 21st, 2008, 08:08 PM On my visit to the park, I took this shot of the environmental friendly "green" lot.

@Mond87, whenever you use a flash the background comes out really dark or black in the photo... pag medyo backlit ang subject that's when i use flash para di dark yung face... also, personally i don't like the shine of the flash (bright spots) on the face... which is why i practically don't use a flash and instead go for a wider aperture or a longer shutter speed... pwede din higher ISO but beware of the noise

laquacherra March 22nd, 2008, 09:22 AM no that's mainly for the tourists. HK has a very efficient subway system (MTR) that crosses Victoria Harbour underwater to Kowloon. Disney was not in my original itinerary but because i was told that it was a mere 30 min ride via MTR from my hotel at the CBD i decided to check out photo op possibilites :)

You should have at least tried taking the shot with a slower shutter speed although I think the stage was too dark and you might have ended up with having terribly blurred shots of the perfomers.
While my friend and I were waiting for our meal, I decided to take a shot of the bar in the restaurant. Hand held cam, original and non altered.
