http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6a/Camera.jpg Photography is the process of making pictures by means of the action of light. Light patterns reflected or emitted from objects are recorded onto a sensitive medium or storage chip through a timed exposure. The process is done through mechanical, chemical or digital devices known as cameras.

The word comes from the Greek words φως phos ("light"), and γραφις graphis ("stylus", "paintbrush") or γραφη graphê, together meaning "drawing with light" or "representation by means of lines" or "drawing." Traditionally the product of photography has been called a photograph. The term photo is an abbreviation, many people also call them pictures. In digital photography, the term image has begun to replace photograph. (The term image is traditional in geometric optics.)

Yan yung tinatawag nilang Motion Blur sa Photoshop. Dun ko lag kayang gawin yan hehe :D

But sometimes I get that kind of effect by accident. Like this one:

(My friend Mitch riding a moving carousel)

This one I made through Photoshop:

for the first pic... it's called panning... you get this effect when you follow the moving object with the camera and clicking it a the same time...

for the second pic, it's a picture with a long exposure time... you expose the film for a long time to create the streaking light effect.

MarkiiBoi
May 30th, 2006, 01:44 PM
^^ how to control the exposure time? hehehe sorry i really have no idea...

c0kelitr0
May 30th, 2006, 02:00 PM
^^ what camera are your using? usually sa menu ng mga cameras, there's an option for LTE or Long time exposure...then you'd be given choices kung ilang seconds katagal open yung shutter...this is very useful when taking taking night shots...depending on how long the exposure is, kaya nagiging streaks of lights na lang yung mga sasakyan...and, don't forget to mount your camera on something stable like a tripod ;)

MarkiiBoi
May 30th, 2006, 02:18 PM
Mine is a Sony cybershot. so it depends on the camera also? coz i dont have an LTE option. too bad. but thnx for answers and for the advice coke. :)

Sinjin P.
May 30th, 2006, 02:49 PM
My camera (Panasonic DMC-LZ2) has a night feature (scenery and portrait) but it automatically determines the exposure time. :( Kung pwede ko lang ihack yung database nya! :D

bagel
May 30th, 2006, 03:07 PM
Well, perhaps if you know how to manually adjust exposure settings, you won't need to use nightmode since proper speed and exposure can deal with the darkness of night.

For me, I practiced finding out what speed and exposure settings to use by sitting in one spot and taking like 50 pictures of the same subject using different exposure settings... Until I got confident about which settings to use for what amount of light.

myambassador! tama ka diyan. the first pic is simply called panning. that's what they do usually sa sports - sa car racing or motocross. you can use 1/30 sec or slower shutter speed settings. again, if you are not using a SLR or prosumer camera, then you would not be able to do this. but take heart, try using your night mode and try to see what the outcome is. i've never tried this myself nor the panning thing. i usually get trash photos. :D but if you get one, it would feel great. that's one of the marvel of photography. well, assuming you don't have photoshop to do all the trick! :) way to go Ash...hehe...

for the second photo, that's indeed is a long exposure shot (thanks myambassador). if you are using a compact cam (point-and-shoot), the chances are slim that you will get something like this one. if you don't want any car to appear on your frame, make it sure that you set your shutter speed at 10 seconds or lower. 15 seconds will also do. If you have this so called "Bulb" setting, then you can set shutter speeed to longer duration, let's say 30 seconds. Again, only SLR cams and some prosumer cams (e.g., Canon S2/ S1 IS, Sony DSC H1) can do that.

Now what is bulb setting...?
Bulb Setting
http://www.butkus.org/chinon/kr-30sp/body37.jpg

This is the shutter speed setting where your cam's aperture is open as long as you wish...Can be hours. This is the principle behind the photos of multiple moons in one frame. (again, PS is capable of doing the trick). You may opt to cover your camera with paper or anything to prevent too much light from coming in, then open it again if you want to capture that scene. This can be done when taking multiple bursts of fireworks.

hey sinjin, thanks for opening a new thread. and hey marvs (sugbuanon), you sure those are old shots? seems like there's a lot of improvement on your composition compared with your earlier tries. :)

markiiboi, i like the greenery of your photo. the more serious version of that can be done this way:

- palapitin mo yung sheep sa tubig, then make it sure na lahat sa sheep kuha sa reflection.
- you can either make it simpler, by maintaining the scope in your frame but positioning yourself the farthest distance para blurred ang background
- or by moving away not using any zoom, and take a landscape shot including as much as you can into your frame :)
aesthetics ko lang naman...:D

wow! galing ng idea of composition ni anthony. that's something i'm not so good at. kahit mg interpret ng short story or poetry nung college di ako marunong.

@ markiiboi, keep them on coming. you have an eye of a good photographer. galing ng sunset shot mo. the right timing and right lighting. good job!

@ sinjin, i like your first photo. for me it's too serious. for some this is superb, but can be boring for others. really subjective. one way to improve this is by putting an accent. you can do this by adding something that's conspicuosly different from the whole thing - maybe a dragonfly or a bright-brown leaf, or perhaps a flower.

the second photo, as maskiiboi said is overexposed. again, blame it to the sun...errr...i mean the cam. hehe...things you can do to improve it: more canopy...the more the leaves are, the less light would come in making more dramatic effects to your photo. second, be simple. do you want to show the guava leaves? or palm leaves? choose only one. :) hope that'd help. keep on clicking. practice more and be excellent!

oh by the way, i know this is already worn out suggestion, but again, to be different, i suggest everyone to try angles which are not so common. what's so common can become a bit cheesy sometimes. so if you have to lie down to take that great shot, then do so. or if you have to climb a tree to get a vantage point, then go ahead. everything for the sake of...SSC? no...for the sake of ART! hehe...: there you go. being different however is no easy job. even as a person. you will be the object of ridicule. but not in photography. the process is tedious and not easy, but you will be rewarded by fulfillment by being different! :)

Nice picture, try to balance the horizon and if I am going to shoot this picture, I would prefer the bangkero towards the left, not so much centered.

No, yong bangkero should be at the left hand side kasi the direction of the moving bangka is towards the right if you're looking at the picture. Pero puede na yan kasi beauty is in the eye of the beholder naman eh.

jbkayaker12, nice photos there! ok yung pagpili mo what to put on your frame and what not to, and how much of your frame should be occupied by a particular portion of your subject! unconscious? now you know...:) hehe...
downside: some photos are overexposed. PS could do the remedies here. plus the weather was not so cooperative. it's a bit difficult to take shots when the sky is gloomy.
your photo searies with a surfer creates a story. galing. parang enthusiastic sa una, then parang lupaypay na nung umuwi. di man lang nakapag-invite ng kaibigan na sumama sa kanya. hehe...a single photo tells thousand stories talaga. (tama ba?)

fhoy, ang galing ng composition mo. i like the first photo...pati yung kabayo nakadoze off. this is the downside: if you want to emphasize your subject being asleep, then on the immediate glance of the photo, dapat makita ko yung tulog na mama. kaso, medyo nakatago. mahirap naman pag lumapit ka pa ng husto! :D good job...

by the way, tama ka dun, you can make the most out of what you have. you can do compositions kahit point-and-shoot ang cam. so take heart for those with no SLR or DSLR or even the prosumer cams.

markiiboi, ang galing mo na. gusto ko yung trick na ginawa mo sa selective coloring. ano nga ba tawag dun? i've tried doing that on photoshop, pero tinamad na ako. perhaps you could coach us do it on our own? :) kita mo, ambopol ko sa digital photography. hanggang film pa lang ata ang alam ko. :D

Thanks, I try to balance everything in the photoshoot from the foreground, main shot and background. Regarding the photos it was foggy, the first photo was foggy, ganyan talaga early morning sa Laguna, zoom shot pa siya kaya parang overexposed. I have more shots of surfers in groups. I lost all my shots with the heavy fog accidentally kaya I took all the shots once again. I was not able to reshoot everything for obvious reason especially some surf scenes late afternoon, oh well.....

ei... please include me... I am currently practicing my photography skills... sige lang! lahat naman welcome dito. but it would be better if you can post some of your photos here :)

@slerz: o, saan ang bird sa second photo? nagtago yata o lumipad na :D. a few suggestions, slerz: on the first photo, since your main subject is the bird, better if you placed it more to the left of the frame, probably lower (remember the rule of thirds), and so that you can have more of the sky which gives more color contrast than the concrete wall, para di rin sya agaw-attention...maganda kasi ang pader eh :D. now, if you want the bird centered, you can zoom-in closer so that it fills the frame and will show more details about the bird and probably what it's doing. also select a shallow (lower f/ value) depth of field. on your second photo, well, kulang sya sa focus saka...hmmm, mas maganda kung may kasama rin na kalapati o anything interesting, tubig na tumutulo siguro...catch it as it drops (kakaiba, kasi umaaraw eh :D j/k), pwede rin kung may nakasulat o drawing na kung ano sa kahoy, 'yun and i-focus mo. sa third photo naman, ang focus ay nasa...pebbles ba 'yan? siguro the same suggestion...focus on something interesting. exposure-wise?...okay naman ng lahat ng photos. okay ba, bai?

@donbagsit: galing, don. ganda ng colors :okay:. san kuha 'yan? saka, what camera do you use?

thanks dudz. i think i was trying to capture a fleeting moment. kaya sometimes may blur or movement. it exactly what i was trying to do. parang impressionistic baga. very simple lines and subject. these are mostly weeds (di yung alam mo na) or flowers you can see anywhere. i was trying to capture the moment and the poetry, hehehe.
yeah, it really is different from many macro shots i've seen. it's less 'academic'. none of those mindblowing details. more of the simple forms that the lines and the gentle curves create and with the predominance of green, it's more of comforting. great, paul!

Ang ganda talaga! I especially like the contrast of the vibrant red banca here amidst the subdued seascape.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y91/imagesaver1206/zambales/d1e03850.jpg

And here, it's not the usual seascape horizontal shot but effective in drawing you in into the dynamism of the wave activity as contrasted to sheltering orange-hued sky. It's almost surrealistic.

This is the Beverly Hills City hall

Nice there, I love the monolithic trees in Beverly Hills, same within the beach cities of Orange County . The ocean front area in Santa Monica reminds me of the bay area in Manila albeit just a bit darker in Santa Monica.

thanks lili and fhoy :). the beach is quite different here. during low tide those 'rocks' (actually dead corals) emerge and form a seascape that's unique.
and i think that's the only red boat amongst dozens near the beach! and did you notice those small black figures in the lower part of the photo. those were fishermen standing(!) on their boats as they go out for night fishing! and with plenty of them, it's an amazing sight...like this

@ mark, where's your flicker account? pacencia na di na ako masyado nakakapagbasa ng posts niyo. seems like you are too good to receive any opinions from us anymore. hehe...let's reverse the process. you share to us your ideas.

ganun pa man...let me share my ideas.
mark's photo # 1. The pattern did great well on the photo...and the accent of red of course. I like photos with accent. This is the trick where you include something very contrasting in color into a rather uninteresting background.

example:
markiiboi's photo (by the way, the background and accent are equally interesting)
a flower against a bark of tree
or a flag in a buildings facade (just like Dudz photo)
or a boat along the shore of a beach

ang napansin ko lang, me ibon sa kanan. hehe...mas ok siguro pag wala, kasi medyo na camouflaged na sa bench. anyway, it looks nice! very nice!
actually lahat. you got the rule of thirds on your 2nd photo.

good job mark! ikaw na magturo sa min. we want to learn your expertise as well.

@ Terrapin, I always liked macros. something that i'm not very good at. The colors looked great. This is one element in taking photos. The more pronounced the colors are, the better. Siguro next time you can add something for size comparisons, let's say...insects, or water droplets. And try increasing the depth of field if you would like to show the entirity of the flower. But just like Paul's photos, showing just limited part of the subject creates a good effect. Keep up the good work!

Now sa photo naman ni Sinjin...
2nd photo muna. I can't see anything unusual with this one unless you are planning to market the ship...:D jowk lang. But if it's the scenario that you would like to show...you can do the following...

- the ship should not comprise majority of the frame. You can do this by including only half or 1/3 of the ship or take the photo from afar. NO zoom. Either way, the result would be better.

- Use rule of thirds. How: you have 2 options. 1/3 should be occupied by the sea...sky - 2/3 or the other way. But since there's nothing much interesting on the foreground, you can go for the first option - 1/3 sea, 2/3 sky because the cloudy sky can be more interesting than a plain sea. What do you think?

Example...
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid206/pf486d33f56a09092a2220c4109d5fd2e/eee44323.jpg

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid206/p9a2178990c967652c9f634327555d270/eee44490.jpg

cloud formations are always interesting.

Exceptions: when you are using a scale or accent. Let's say, a small boat on the foreground, or a boy watching the ship. :)

Keep in mind tho: include as much sky as possible when taking landscape photos...or skyline photos. but of course, you can try to experiment all the time, and let's see how it works.

opps...i forgot to comment on your 2nd photo.
Looking nice! You created a story. This is one aspect to create dramatic photos. Just a little honing needed.

Like minimizing the black portion of the tree. But hey, not too hasty. You can use the tree to 'frame' your subject.

Or simplifying: Like including only few boys watching the ships to pass by.

Well, that's from me who likes simple subjects. Avoid including too many stories or subjects on one frame. Imagine including only the boy with his palms on head and one ship on the frame plus framed by the tree. That would be dramatic.

Good job overall. Keep these ideas in mind the next time you click that button again. But again and again, you can opt to experiment on your shots. that's one of the marvel of digicams. you can just shoot and shoot then choose. however, we would be able to save time and battery life if we take shots the way we want it the very first time.

hmm...magagaling na ang mga enthusiasts! keep on clicking guys! and it should not be me alone ang nagcocomment. i should also post my photos and you comment on them okay? positive or negative! that's the way to learn. can be easy, but most of the times, it's difficult (and costly)...

but take heart everyone. let's not make this hobby a burden, Enjoy lang while doing something we really want to do. :)

If there is something not quite right with the picture, I look at it and study it hopefully correcting the mistake, next time around. hi jon. I think this is more of a personal preference. for me this is okay. Just don’t overdo/abuse it. like most photographers (professionals and amateurs) i do some minimal standard manipulation on my photos. adjusting contrast, saturation, sharpness, removing noise/grains, also correcting barrel distortion. Though I can do most of these in-camera, I opt to do them in the computer. it's much easier. Others do more depending on their need or purpose. i think that’s their choice. But again, just don’t abuse it to the extent that will significantly alter or change what’s in the photo. Di rin talaga maganda. Lalabas na hindi natural. and the viewer will know. And these are different from errors in composition, focus, exposure, white balance, lighting which are the main areas of control of the photographer and which can be corrected/improved through practice. :)

Sepia-toned Pinhole image

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b73/Butchik/PICT5872.jpg

Just want to share a self portrait during one of my trips...

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e80/PinoyBroker/SSC/Austria_2505.jpg

Using a Kodak DX6440 4MP digicam
Pic was taken using only 2MP resolution
Generic Tripod
Night Shot Mode
Self-timer

For us who can't afford yet a good camera, an entry level digicam with special features like sport/night mode will come in handy.

Invest in a good, steady and sturdy tripod since you will still be using this even if you upgrade your camera.

Since this is in night mode (slow shutter speed), once the shot was taken, I did not move an inch for 4 whole seconds.

Practice makes perfect... especially if self portrait.. hehehe.. I had to do this shot more than 5 times just to get this "pwede na" shot.

Enjoy!

here's a photo of a very cute landscape in front of UST Hospital...

Markiiboi: Try mo pag-aralan High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDRI). Para siyang combination ng 4-7 exposures ng isang picture. If your using Photoshop CS. Meron cyang feature dun ng Merge to HDR ata under File>Automate. Im not really sure how it works cause di ko pa natatry. I saw the term sa Construction thread ng SWFC dito sa SSC din.

Example:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3/abercromb24/HDR-16-thumb.jpg

Check this out: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/high-dynamic-range.htm

and http://www.gregdowning.com/HDRI/stitched/

Post ka ng sample works ha? :)

^^ Thanks BoNduRanT. Sure ill try to learn that one. But my cam is only capable of upto 3 exposures. Will it still apply? And im only using the Photoshop v7.

Puede ata kahit 3 exposures lang. Try mo 2. Underexposed saka overexposed hehehe. La pa yung "Merge to HDR" sa version 7 kasi. Yun din gamit ko.

hi guys. nice to know the thread is still alive. ey chymera, congratulations for the new cam. i imagine how excited i was when i got my first true "digital" cam. :D

coke, i'd trade my S2 IS for your S3 IS. And guess what, street price for S3 IS can now be as low as Php20000 if you're going to buy it in HK. Hehe...buy hey, look somewhere else. sa Hidalgo, you can buy S2 IS at around 20K. I'll recommend Canon or Sony to you. Go for S2 IS or Sony DSC H1. Price for both is now below 30K. Pag authorized dealer, you have to shell out 30K. Pero pag street price, 20K. In fact, you can buy it from the US at less than 20K na.
