I find nanjing a beautiful place although i've never been there. I hear its one of China's prettiest. The roads are lined with trees which provide shade and comfort when the temperature gets really hot. I know its hot there because its one of China's three "furnaces". Nanjing is a historical city from imperial china to pre-war history. Its unfortunate fate with the Japanese is Japan's worst form of aggression in WWII. That is something that has scarred the city, but i see from pictures that it has come a long way since then.

I hear a lot of construction is going on- particularly with its subway. Can you post some pictures of that here?

I like the traditional scenes and boats along the lake - they help release stress.

Unfortunately, such attitude of 崇洋 (West-worshipping) exists all over Asia, even in very nationalistic countries such as Japan and South Korea...

Well, all the pubs and bars have Chinese names but I didn't show them.e.g.Scarlet:乱世佳人,mazzo:玛索.
We have to admit that people in Asia want to be international and that's why students here are crazy about English.
And here,at this forum,we chinese also use English, right?

Muy bonita ciudad!!. Looks like a very fascinating city, with parks and the obviquotous tall buildings all over China and Asia. I propose we should build a bridge between Asia and LatinAmerica. Dont let NorthAmerica and Europe steal all of the show of development. It is our time lets learn more about our cultures and because we are so different from each other, Asia and LatinAmerica we both can benefit.

I wouldn't call those names "Chinese" either. But they would be much better than
the English ones.

We have to admit that people in Asia want to be international and that's why students here are crazy about English.
And here,at this forum,we chinese also use English, right?

Sure, but I don't think we should neglect our own language in order to become
international. Being international is more to do with the soft and hard infrastructure
of the country, it's not aout having foreign names for your local businesses.

Sure we use English here in this forum -- because this is an international forum and
most users here don't read Chinese. I would never use English to post in a Chinese
forum.

Ranked 9th in Mainland China

Nice city, totally unknown for me.

Perhaps u might have heard about it under its' western name Nanking:treaty of Nanking, Nanking massacre (two tragic but widely known historical events linked to Nanjing).

Nanjing is the capital city of Jiangsu with a population of 4.5 million. Owing to its superior geographic location, the city has remained the transportation center of the Yangzi Delta region. Once prospering on its shipyards, Nanjing has now grown into a commercial hub and cultural center of southeast China.
For tourists, Nanjing is one of China's most attractive cities. The city has a balanced layout between traditional and modern architecture. Its many broad boulevards are well shaded from the summer heat by tall trees. The river bank by the Yangzi River irradiates nice and peaceful night views; the beautiful and quiet Xuanwu Lake and its forested islands smooth out the tough edges of a commercial metropolitan.

Here's a question. Which is currently the more economically influential city Nanjing or Hangzhou? :?

Now, I know Nanjing was once a capital city to some Chinese dynasty. But Hangzhou was also a powerful city back in the ancient times, as noted by Marco Polo himself.

So, here's the follow-up question. Which among these dynamic cities has more economic potential, in the forseeable future? :?

big-dog

Good question. There're lots of debates on this.

Historically both cities are famous for their special characters though Nanjing seems more influential in modern history.

Current economic data are (2007 GDP billion yuan):

Hangzhou: 413 16%
Nanjing: 320.7 15.6%

Personally, I think Hangzhou might be able to keep this edge for a while. Of course Nanjing is having better public infrastructure and skyscrapers.

^^ I see.

So, with Nanjing, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, and Ningbo growing tremendously, how long would it take them to merge into once megalopolis? :?

^^ when everybody has a car or the public transportation is so convenient that going anywhere in that area is within 1.5 hours.

I have a feeling that area will eventually grow into a larger and denser version of Greater Tokyo (or Greater LA or NYC-New jersey).

Major renovations for Nanjing's Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum completed

2009-07-05

A major renovation project for the UNESCO heritage site, Nanjing's Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, has just been completed. After 14 months of rigorous work, the heart of the mausoleum complex, Ming Building, is glistening under a new roof.

http://www.cctv.com/program/cultureexpress/20090705/images/1246784672354_1246784672354_r.jpg

A major renovation project for the UNESCO heritage site, Nanjing's
Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, has just been completed.

Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum is the tomb of Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty. The construction of the mausoleum began in 1381 and ended in 1405.

The Ming Building is the one of the mausoleum complex still standing. Its rooftop was destroyed in a war 150 years ago. From then, the building was eroded by weather, jeopardizing its entire structure.

A government-supported renovation project was initiated in June 2008, to add a new roof to the Ming Building.

Wu Jinbao, Vice Director Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum Bureau, said, "The completion of the project has put an end to the problem that threatened the existence of the building. It also restores the original glory and grandeur of the building as an imperial mausoleum."

This new roof has been built in strict accordance with historic records. Experts also drew on other Ming style constructions, such as the Forbidden City in Beijing. The rooftop has been brightened with new glazed tiles and colored paintings up to imperial standards.

^^I like the style of Chinese buildings made by stone like the picture above. The stone crafted like Chinese building that usually made by wood. They also didn't paint the stone. It look very beautiful.

I wonder why no one build it anymore in mainland China? Is it because of this kind of building is KMT architectural style?

The Great Hall of People should be designed like the building above.

Nanjing | Urban Planning Exhibition Hall
June 16th, 2010

http://movingcities.org/wordpress/wp-content/photos/nkg_urban10/100409-nkg-urban-planning-museum-1075.jpg

Urban Planning Exhibition Hall | Nanjing, April 9 2010

There are many ways to get a grip on the immensity of any Chinese city. One way to understand the development – besides driving through, seeing from a rooftop or by wandering around – is to head to the local urban planning museum. Typically these spaces exhibit the largest scale-model you ever saw, while the corridors are draped with explanations about planning strategies, new iconic buildings and historical developments.

Nanjing is a city with about 7.4 million inhabitants and the second largest commercial center in the East China region, after Shanghai. The current rush in development – check for example today’s WAN’s news about the 460 acre of Waterfront wonders in Nanjing – is partially fueled by the fact that Nanjing will hosts the second Youth Olympic Games in 2014 [official website]. In February 2010 their winning bid followed a close 47-42 vote among the International Olympic Committee members. This article has a write-up featured shortly after the announcement:

"Nanjing will keep its costs down by using existing competition venues. It has 21 facilities, including world-class stadiums built for the China National Games five years ago. The IOC stipulations require a minimum 25 venues. The city also plans to build an Olympic Village on a site 5-min from the downtown core in a green surroundings that will be “agreeable” and “take into full account of our residents”. Its presentation video said Nanjing would have 83,000 hotel rooms by 2014. (…) In an impressive presentation that outlined Nanjing’s bid as a “Reliable, Safe, Risk-Free City”, vice mayor Wang Shouwen told the IOC members that 97% of residents supported the hosting of the Games and with a large student population this would “inspire children to lead healthy lives”.

But back to the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, which opened in September 1999. Below some pictures, for more official information – the Hall serves to increase the level of public participation and political transparency and ensures planning to serve the public interest – check out this or that Nanjing Urban Planning-website.

I didn't know if Nanjing has Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. The city center doesn't look nice, it's a combination between low-hi rise buildings and less density.

I love Nanjing! I've only been there once on a cruise from Chongqing to Shanghai on the Yangtze river.

I'm hoping to go back there this time when I'm in Shanghai. :) Has anyone done that before? Any recommendations? It seems like taking the high speed rail would allow me to make it a one day trip.

Taken by me on 9/23/2010 :) We took a one day trip from Shanghai to Nanjing via the new high speed rail. This is the view right across from the Nanjing Railway Station.

Around 9:30AM, right after we arrived.

Amazing. Can't wait to see Nanjing in 'real life'.
I've booked a hotel from the 7'th 'till the 9'th of April.
It would be nice to meet some locals who could show me around for those 2 days.
I think the Nanjijng TV-Tower is open for tourists, but what about the Greenland Financial Complex?

zhongshan mountain (钟山风景区)
ming dynasty city wall(南京古城墙)
xuanwu lake(玄武湖)
fuzi miao(夫子庙)
xixia mountain(栖霞山)
ming tomb(明孝陵)
nanjing is very ancient and green, wish you a good journey.

I just arrived and i've decided to stay just one night, instead of two. Also because the wheater is bad (tomorrow a bit better). And because I'm very tired of trying to make myself clear in English, and still not being understood (even for the most simple questions, asked very slowly). So I'm only visiting the TV Tower and maybe the Planning & Exhibition Hall. Too bad, The wheather sucks today.

Probably because you are in China, where people speak Chinese.

Unless you happened to be speaking to a known English-speaker, speaking slowly won't make a difference if the other party doesn't even know the language.

I'm not Chinese and im not trying to be a jerk but it could be a clue that your in a country that speaks Chinese so maybe if you would have thought you should have learned some simple phrases in Mandarin it would have helped you a lot. I personally find it extremely rude when people go to other countries and don't try to learn some of the customs or language it helps a lot thats for sure.

i think all young people can understand your simple questions,if you speak slowly and clearly. and most chinese learn british english in school, they maybe not familiar with america english pronounciation.

To be honest I have learned some simple phrases in Mandarin. But the fact that one word has 3/4 differente pronouncences, doesn't make It easier. I don't expect everyone will talk English, but at least the hotel-staff, even if it's a low-budget hotel.
Anyway, the wheater still s*cked yesterday. No clear sky at all. I stepped out of the subway and wanted to walk to the TV-Tower. From the subay-station, It was 3/4km's away. But I could barely recognize the TV-Tower, because of the smog. So I decided to step back into the subway and went back to Shanghai.

A Rising Nanjing Thrives on Youth and Art
By JUSTIN BERGMAN

IT was a Saturday night at Tony’s Bar in Nanjing, China, and as in any good university town, packs of rowdy students were making quick work of their pints. A long-haired guitarist in a black leather jacket crooned Chinese love songs from a small stage. Young men bent low over tables playing boisterous dice games while their girlfriends, hair dyed various shades of red and brown, smoked disinterestedly and texted, their faces illuminated by the glow of their phones.

“I tell my wife I only have two dreams in life,” said Tony Zhao, the bar’s owner, who was wearing a jacket emblazoned with the English words “Viking School Softball,” low-slung skater jeans and a goatee. “To open a bar in my hometown and to have kids with her.”

Thanks to a combination of young entrepreneurs like Mr. Zhao, large numbers of university students and revitalization efforts by the local and national governments, today’s Nanjing has an air of youthful exuberance that would have been unthinkable only a few decades ago. Indeed, the city, a booming city of 6.5 million on the banks of the Yangtze River some 185 miles west of Shanghai, bears little resemblance to the broken and brutalized former capital of China that suffered one of the worst atrocities of World War II.

After seizing Shanghai in late 1937, the Japanese Army went on a six-week rampage in Nanjing, then known as Nanking, slaughtering and raping waves of civilians in an episode that later became known as the Nanking Massacre or the Rape of Nanking. Most historians generally agree that at least 150,000 people were killed in the massacre — China puts the death toll at 300,000 — and tens of thousands raped.

The incident has received more attention in recent years; it has been the subject of books, most notably Iris Chang’s 1997 best seller “The Rape of Nanking,” and movies, including the coming “Nanjing Heroes,” directed by Zhang Yimou (who put on the Beijing Olympics opening ceremonies) and starring Christian Bale as an American priest who shelters prostitutes and students. Filming began in the city in January.

“Every family in Nanjing has a story to tell,” said Frank Hossack, the Scottish-born founder of a media-consulting firm in Nanjing. His wife’s grandfather was a soldier in the Chinese Army in the 1930s and is one of about 300 survivors of the massacre believed to still be alive.

But Nanjing has shown a remarkable capacity for reinvention during its 2,500-year history. And in recent years, the city has moved beyond its tragic past to become a vital engine of China’s economic growth, thanks in part to its position smack in the middle of China’s prosperous eastern seaboard. Growth has also accelerated thanks to improved ground transit: A new bullet train linking Nanjing and Shanghai started service last year, cutting travel time between the cities from several hours to just 75 minutes, and a Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line is scheduled to open later this year, with a stop in Nanjing. Within the city, two metro lines were built in the last few years; 15 more are planned to begin service by 2030.

Signs of Nanjing’s newfound wealth and optimism can be seen everywhere. In the heart of the downtown Xinjiekou district, a bronze statue of Sun Yat-sen, considered the father of modern China, looks out over a bustling commercial area awash with luxury-brand boutiques and car dealerships for the mega-rich (Gucci, Hermès, Lamborghini) and Western chains for the young and trend-obsessed (Starbucks, H&M).

There is perhaps no more visible symbol of the city’s transformation than the Zifeng Tower, a 1,480-foot skyscraper that opened its doors last May. Housing offices, restaurants and an InterContinental hotel, the tower is the second-tallest building in China and billed as the seventh-tallest in the world.

Underlying all this development is a large Chinese and foreign student population — there are several major universities, plus a branch of Johns Hopkins’s international studies school — as well as a substantial group of young expatriates, drawn by job opportunities and the low cost of living. They hang out at places like Ellen’s, a dive bar where the burgers cost $3, M.I.A. is on the iPod playlist, and patrons are encouraged to tag the walls with graffiti. In fact, art and music crop up in all sorts of venues.

“Another art exhibition has just opened at an Italian restaurant that doubles as an art space, and there are more bands visiting on tour,” said Keith Maguire, who moved from his native Ireland to Nanjing to co-found an English-language city guide. “More art, more live music is a good thing in my book, and the venues for these are largely around the universities.”

On a larger scale, local government officials and private investors are pushing the city as an emerging center for contemporary art and architecture, hoping to lure tourists from the neon-bathed streets of its neighbor Shanghai.

The most ambitious project on the horizon is the Contemporary International Practical Exhibition of Architecture. Currently under construction in a national forest about 12 miles outside town, the privately financed project will include a futuristic contemporary art museum designed by the American architect Steven Holl, a convention center, and 20 villas individually designed by architects like Ai Weiwei — China’s political provocateur of the moment — and David Adjaye from England.

Delayed for years by construction problems, the $250 million park is now set to open in October. Zhu Tong, the director of the Holl-designed Nanjing Sifang Art Museum, believes it will put Nanjing on the art world map. “Many people think the contemporary art centers are in Beijing and Shanghai,” Mr. Zhu said, “but we want to show the world that Nanjing will be the best in the country for contemporary art.”

Another addition is the Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum, a striking structure that opened last February. Although exhibitions lean toward the traditional — calligraphy, scroll paintings — the museum also hosted Nanjing’s first biennale in October, which featured contemporary artists like Marina Abramovic and Tony Oursler.

The independent art scene has been slower to develop, largely because of a lack of exhibition spaces and limited interest in contemporary pieces among the art-buying public. But a small group of artists has been trying to change things by showing works in restaurants, cafes or their own modest gallery spaces.

One of those leading the way is Qian Dajing, who returned to Nanjing after spending 20 years in New York because he believed his hometown would now be receptive to his public art installations. He said that he wants to use what he learned in the West to create “something real” in his hometown. “In the United States, everything is normal, everything is in order,” he said. “In China, we have some new chances.”

Peter Huang, a curator, also returned to the city after studying and working for several years in Chicago, Shanghai and Beijing to open an exhibition space, the Nanjing Drug Art Museum. “I can feel from just five years ago, things have changed,” he said. “When my friends and I organized shows in Nanjing before, the government came in to stop us at the openings. But today, I can have a show with government support.”

Even with the city’s transformation, though, memories of the past still linger. The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, dedicated to the atrocities, reopened in 2007 after a two-year expansion. On a recent steel gray day, visitors stared solemnly at the names of victims etched in Chinese into a white granite wall.

“I had read about it and hesitated to come here,” said Huey Lu Ho, a visitor from Singapore, pausing by the museum’s reflecting pool. “But it’s very dignified. The message in the end is still peace. In order to achieve that, you need to understand what happened.”

Outside the museum, the atmosphere was more exuberant. Young couples, flashing smiles, snapped photos of one another in front of statues in anguished poses, while teenagers fired up their mobile phones and checked their messages. This new generation won’t necessarily forget what happened, but their eyes are firmly fixed on the future.

我觉得很漂亮!Very comfortable and lots of trees. And not too large. When I walked around the lake and on the wall, I was practically alone. A nice change of pace from Shanghai.
