cydevil April 30th, 2005, 11:50 PM I was stranded in that city for two weeks, because the road to Tibet, my final destination, was under repairs from a landslide. My stay in Chengdu was most memorable, because I suffered miserably trying to save money and I had to go through a huge storm while doing that. I managed to survive two weeks with only 400 yuan, but I got sick of it so in the last two days I used like 800 -_-;
Anyways, the city is not too dirty nor polluted, and it has a great canal system, along with great sightseeing destinations around the city, such as Emei Shan. Most of all, I think the girls in Chengdu are among the most beautiful in China. And all that great food! The people in general are very nice, and some of them actually let me and my friend, who happend to be complete strangers to them, stay in their homes for a while. We couldn't have suvived without their generous hospitality. Overall, my experience in the city was great, and I would definitely recommend a visit.

Thank you for your pictures of a very faceless and modern chinese city. I cannot really see the difference between all your galleries since all the buildings could have been in every modern city. I have seen thousand of such buldings in the faceless quarters of Beijing
Is this how Chengdu really looks like?
I guess that a lot Chinese Citiies really wants to look like American cities with a lot of cars, concrete houses....
Andrew March 18th, 2008, 03:53 AM I've not yet been to Chengdu, but people I know who have say that there are still some old parts of the city remaining that haven't been destroed to make way for yet more glass office blocks. However, I think you're unfair in criticising the photographer for these pics. There is undoubtedly also some excellent modern architecture in those photos. I think it's important to get a good balance of old and new in most large cities.
Johnor March 18th, 2008, 04:48 AM Ive just browsed like all his galleries......
I have nothing against modern buildings, but so many and so similar.
Either he shows the cities like they are and then it is depressive, because why should I travel half the world to look at something that I can find everywhere else.
The other alternative is that he chooses to highlight just some aspects of Chengdu. Either way, my interrest to see Chengdu is not high...
The Photos are by the way flawless.
bobdikl March 19th, 2008, 01:39 AM I have been to Sichuan province. I enjoyed it very much. If Chengdu has decided to become a modern and funtional city. I hope they will preserve those smaller towns, villages and landscape like those world heritage towns in Yunan province.
Whiteeclipse March 20th, 2008, 07:37 AM I am so impressed, it's so clean and modern, it even looks better then many first class cities.

snow is red April 24th, 2008, 12:25 AM Chengdu to see Asia's largest container center
By Tu Lei (chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2008-04-23 14:51
Construction on the Chengdu railway container center station is expected to start soon, said Jin Dazhong, director of logistics for the Chengdu Municipal Committee of Communication, according to today’s 21st Century Business Herald.
With an investment of two billion yuan ($286.39 million) from China United International Rail Container Co Ltd, the station will have a total cargo throughput of 2.2 or 2.5 million twentyfoot equivalent units (TEUs) upon completion.
“It will be the largest railway container center station in Asia,” said Jin.
The station will open direct lines from Chengdu, Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Lianyungang and Tianjin ports, and the transportation time will be shortened from 5 or 6 days to only 48 hours.
Covering an area of 2.140 mu (142.67 ha), the station is the largest of 18 container logistics projects planned by China United International Rail Container Co Ltd.
Chengdu aims to build itself into a logistics hub in western China by 2010, and 2,700 mu more land has been planned for the container logistics zone, with a designed annual handing capability of two million TEUs.

big-dog April 20th, 2009, 11:11 AM Chengdu, China: a growing software and outsourcing hub
Apr. 20, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China is undergoing a process of industrial upgrading, in which the focus is turned from manufacturing to the service sector. Meanwhile, because the export-oriented economy has been hit by the global recession, China has recognized the need for a new direction for development. Software and service outsourcing has turned out to be a good choice.
In 2008, China's software industry saw rapid growth, with the industry revenue increasing 29.8% to RMB 757.3 billion. The growth is 8.3 percentage points higher than it was in the previous year. Meanwhile, software exports grew by 39.0% to hit US$14.2 billion. Service outsourcing grew at an even faster speed of 54.3% to US$1.6 billion.
Although China has a long way to go before it can compete with India, the giant in the world's outsourcing industry, some changes have taken place in recent times. The Mumbai attacks called the future of outsourcing in India into question, and India's labor costs continue to rise. In contrast, China has abundant IT human resources available at low cost. China also provides a safe and stable environment to overseas investors.
The software and outsourcing industry is now one of the most important industries encouraged by China's central government. More and more Chinese cities are focusing on the development of the software and service outsourcing industry. At the beginning of February 2009, 20 cities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chengdu, were approved by the State Council to become demonstration cities for service outsourcing. Preferential policies such as tax rebates were granted to these cities for the promotion of the software and outsourcing industry.
As distinct from the manufacturing industry, the software and outsourcing industry is not limited by geography or transportation costs. The vast hinterland of West China has low barriers to entry, and therefore is favored by software and outsourcing companies facing the global recession. Among such cities, Chengdu could be an ideal choice due to its unique advantages of talents and environment.
In recent years, Chengdu has shown stable growth in the software and outsourcing industry. In 2008, revenue from Chengdu's software industry rose 37.7% year on year to reach RMB 42.7 billion, accounting for 5.6% of the nation's total, and the growth rate was 7.9 percentage points higher than the national level. Meanwhile, software exports reached US$300 million in 2008, almost doubling from the previous year.
Though the rankings of all Chinese cities is yet to be released, according to the 2007 statistics, the revenue of the software industry in Chengdu ranked sixth and the growth rate of the software industry in Chengdu ranked second among the 20 demonstration cities in China. Notably, Chengdu's revenue surpassed that of some strong competitors such as Dalian, Shenzhen, Suzhou and Xi'an, and was ranked first in the central and western China.

The fast development of Chengdu's software and outsourcing industry has been boosted by several factors. In addition to support from government, Chengdu also enjoys several advantages, such as an abundant reserve of talent, low costs and a well-established infrastructure.
Chengdu is an important education and R&D center in China that has abundant human resources. Currently, Chengdu has around 100,000 employees and technicians working in the software industry. As of the end of 2008, there were over 500,000 university and college students in Chengdu, including some 100,000 majoring in software-related disciplines.
The investment cost in Chengdu is also low. Among the 20 demonstration cities, Chengdu's labor costs are below the average level. The average wage in Chengdu's IT and IT-related industries was less than half of that in Beijing and Shanghai. Furthermore, Chengdu also has low land, energy and water costs. For example, the average rent for Grade A office space in Chengdu is about 27%, 33% and 63% of that in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen, respectively.
Attracted by these advantages, many overseas software and outsourcing companies, such as Microsoft, Symantec, IBM, Wipro, Ubisoft, Gameloft and GGL, have established their presence in Chengdu. Accenture is the most recent investor in Chengdu. It declared the launch of its global service outsourcing center in this city on Feb 18.
Microsoft set up its first China video game R&D center in Chengdu in 2006. "Chengdu has top-class game developing talents, and a mature customer market," said Chen Yongzheng, Microsoft's vice president and Greater China CEO. "The local government also supports the development of the game industry. These are the reasons why we chose Chengdu."
Symantec established its largest R&D center in Chengdu in 2008 with an investment of US$50 million. It later set up a joint venture with Huawei in Chengdu with an investment of US$150 million. "The market in China is obviously the best one in the world and has the fastest growth," said Guo Zunhua, Symantec's vice president and Pacific-Asia CEO. "Despite the global crisis, we will enlarge our investment in Chengdu."
In April 2009, IBM, which invested in Chengdu thirteen years ago, upgraded its branch in Chengdu to be the headquarters in Southwest and Northwest China, an area that includes nine provinces and one municipality. Zhou Weikun, chairman of IBM's Greater China Region, said IBM will continue to invest in Chengdu to strengthen the influence of this headquarters in West China.
Due to Chengdu's important position in China's software industry, several state-level summits for the software industry have chosen Chengdu to hold the events. The China International Software Summit has been held each year in Chengdu since 2003. On April 16, 2009, the 7th Summit was held in this city. It is organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, (MIIT) the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and the Sichuan Provincial Government, and undertaken by Chengdu Municipal Government and Sichuan Information Industry Department.
This year, the summit was attended by about 1,500 people, including government officials and delegates from organizations and associations, as well as representatives of 650 enterprises such as Microsoft, Oracle, AMD, Fujitsu, Dawning, Huawei, Sina, Neusoft and Ufida.
The themes of this summit are internationalism and professionalism. The summit hopes to boost communication and cooperation in the international software industry and will promote integration, innovation and development. It consists of ten professional meetings and forums, including the EU-China Information Society Summit, the Conference of Sino-Japan Software Outsourcing Industry, the Sino-US Food Safety Information Based Supervision Summit, the International Disaster Recovery and Outsourcing Summit & the Fourth China Disaster Recovery Industry Forum, the 3G International Communication Summit, the Singapore Digital Community Seminar, etc.
According to a report which was released in October 2008 by India's Global Services, Chengdu ranks 37th among the top 50 emerging outsourcing cities in the world, after Shanghai, Beijing, Dalian and Guangzhou in mainland China. Compared to the aforementioned four cities, in the global economic downturn, Chengdu, because of its low cost and abundant talents, seems to be more attractive. Together with strong government support and a well-established infrastructure, Chengdu will see fast growth in the software and outsourcing industry in the near future.

deepblue01 July 7th, 2011, 05:31 PM omg, did they demolish it to build some ugly concrete building? I understand Mao statues were a must back then, but why demolish the palace? Couldn't they have done something similar to Beijing and expanded a square and then did their statues there?

Celebriton November 1st, 2011, 11:19 PM Chengdu Banks on Luxury for Status and Success
30 August 2011
Society & Lifestyle, Trends
http://red-luxury.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/chengdu.jpg
Forget stimulus checks; local Chinese governments are encouraging luxury buying as a means of increasing revenue. While there may be rumblings in top-tiered cities like Beijing about discouraging luxury spending, lower-tiered cities are preoccupied with raising money and their status – and bringing in luxury shops is the answer. A shining example of this is Chengdu, a second-tier city in southwest China.
The Chengdu government, according to Chengdu Today, has set a goal to bring 20 famous international brands to Chengdu every year. The magazine also reports that by 2015, primacy ratio of international first-tier brands will reach 80% or above in western China. According to the Chengdu Retail Industry Association, 80 percent of international luxury brands already operate in the city, which is ranked third behind Beijing and Shanghai in luxury sales.
The plan is already working. Chengdu’s retails sales for 2010 reached $5.8 billion. Much of that went to luxury brands like Hermes, Burberry, and Prada. Chengdu’s Louis Vuitton store alone earned $138 million, and the city’s Cartier location generated more revenue than any other location in China.
Chengdu Today magazine recently profiled the city’s luxury consumers. While their incomes range from zero to 6 figures, residents on average spend between 10 and 16 percent of their annual income on luxury purchases. Those with wealthy spouses or parents to supply additional income spend considerably more.
The success of this government initiative is bolstered by Chinese society, which tends to be very conscious of status.“When I left China 20 years ago, I was considered too ‘burgeois’ because I liked to put on pretty clothes while others still wore Mao suits. Those days are long gone,” says Helen H. Wang, an author and expert on China’s middle class. “Today not being ‘bourgeois’ is a subject of public ridicule.” According to Wang, fashionable Chinese women pair Gucci and Versace accessories with their favorite jeans just to assert their place in society.
Whether students or business owners, members of the Chinese middle class are freely participating in the luxury-buying phenomenon. Thanks to this demographic’s response to the government’s encouragement, McKinsey estimates that China will trump Japan as the world’s largest luxury goods market by 2015. Middle-class consumers surveyed by Chengdu Today called luxury goods “necessities,” “investments,” and a way to achieve “spiritual satisfaction.” In that case, Chengdu is nothing short of heaven.
http://red-luxury.com/2011/08/30/chengdu-banks-on-luxury-for-status-and-success/
Ewan117 November 2nd, 2011, 03:00 AM Like really? Buying foreign 'luxury' goods is going to make a city more appealing? What about making its own 'luxury' goods? What about advertising its own attractions? Its 'luxury' because of status? Come on. Once China was poor, now that they are rich, they waste all this money on 'luxury' goods? Just don't get it!!!!

Well, there are a lot of thing you miss to see.
First, it's for the city development. After being established as "big city", the next step is to became an international city. Attracting and establishing world class luxury brand is a good step.
Second, it's for the equal development. If you live in Sichuan province and want to buy a luxury brand, you can buy in Chengdu and any other city in China, no need to go to the coastal city like Shanghai and Beijing, even HK.
Third, for city culture. A backwater city with a backwater people, suddenly will change, just because someone open luxury stores in the city and another world class brand too. Futuristic shopping malls to five star hotels. From highway, modern subway to high speed railway. It change the city and the people forever.
Of course Chengdu will make his own luxury brand too one day (I hope so), but first the government need to improve the city culture, to educate the backwater people. Increasing people culture, indirectly can increase people income too. From cheap manufacture to world class designer and inventor.
Ewan117 November 3rd, 2011, 05:42 PM I'm afraid most Chinese don't think that way. It's all got to do with 'face' and status. Like you say, I hope to see the Chinese exporting luxury goods to other cities and having it in their city rather than worshiping the same foreign brands over and over again
Bannor November 3rd, 2011, 10:37 PM Luxury brands is the new "art".
If you step on it, I'm sure some idiot manage to raise its prize, claiming its contemporary art only the few, manage to see the splendor of!
There are so many clueless brainless "luxury" designers nowadays, it reminds me of the book "Cult of the Amateurs", where all you need is a fifth grade education. I'm ashamed to be a european from the same continent as som of them... just think Paris Hilton or Victoria Beckham...
Its so much hideous crap I'm amazed at how much money it generates.
Besides, becomming a global city is all about wealth and money. Smart people don't throw away that same wealth if all they want is recognition.
They spend it on investments in order to one day aquire that wealth and money.
Besides I highly doubt its worth it for education purposes. In Norway where I live, there are not many luxury brand stores, yet we have quite some famous designers. It is alot better to start a design school, or entrepreneur school, than building another shopping mall full of overprized stuff.
But then again, innovation and design is probably China's biggest challenge. The entire school system is need of an astronomic overhaul... I'm sure 50% of you would be categorized as having adhd after western standards, simply because of the extreme expectations. Sure you can do math and remember historical facts, but comming up with new ideas should be what an education really is about.
But suit yourself! :)
Ewan117 November 4th, 2011, 02:18 PM ^^ Finally, someone who thinks the same way as me lol. Yeah, try hard cool is so yesterday.........
being a leader means being in charge. not sucking up to 'brands'

Through the staging of its contemporary displays, the 2011 Chengdu Biennale highlights Chengdu’s efforts to transform itself into a “Modern International Garden City”. The overarching leitmotif of the garden city indicates two interrelated aspects: one material, the other spiritual. The Englishman Ebenezer Howard (1850-1920) expressed the following desire in his Garden Cities of Tomorrow: “Shall we be able to build up a society with art and culture for all, and with some great spiritual aim dominating people’s lives?”
A “garden city” was not simply an urban form, but the embodiment of a desire that this ideal city would be controlled by the spirit. This is in complete accord with the ancient Chinese philosophy based on harmony between heaven and man. In the chapter of The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons titled “Material colouring” (wù sè), Liu Xie wrote of the artist “turning”, flowing”, and “mentally hovering” within the changes of matter and of vistas, and this expressed his creative view of the complementarity of matter and spirit. “Garden cities” insist that we observe not only the spatiotemporal changes a city undergoes but that we also see how within concepts, as within material objects, clear distinctions exist, and these can provide ideas with material forms so that what exists without occupying space serves at the same time to explain space. Moreover, these two forms of space have interactive elements that suffuse within a specific duration, such as Bergson indicated. In post-modern cultural theory, the unseen layered changes of duration are more surprising than any of the surface changes that can be observed.

Emloto December 18th, 2011, 03:05 AM About the city's pictures , there are all old photos , taking by 5-10 years ago .
And Gentlemen , please don't unreasonable to treat a girl .
Every big city has themselfs 'luxury' store in every country. Either American or Norway luxury store are set for vanity people .There are not any difference with Chinese city and another city . They are all suitable for your opinion.
Now most of highest levels of 'luxury' brands are from French , Italy and Japan... But many of they are made in China . USA is very weakness in this place ,don't tell me USA have Anna sui - a Chinese Amerian brand and few cheaper second lines brands like Polo Ralph Lauren , Calvin Klein . And I don't know any 'luxury' brand is from North Europe , I feel they don't care it . And there are Chinese who like it or who don't like it . It is their own business.
For a long time , Chinese Precious porcelain and Precious beautiful selk is a popular real luxury in Europe. This is good exchange and communication history between China and Europe .Does any USA 'luxury' brand popular in Europe ?
And I don't like who call themself from "Western" . In the ancient times , Chinese people call Hungary, India and Persian Western . For Chinese they are all from Western . And second , USA is locaded in FarEast of China , not west .
Most important thing is , Chinese is enough confident to accept foreign" luxury " .that is my first time hear this interesting perspective . Of course China need selves morden luxury brand , but this is not most important .
All based on China have a great history and own great culture system in all aspects . They respect European culture . When they buy some european " luxury "and japanese " luxury ", they really don't care about it is foreigns .
Maybe some rich chinese need buy some " luxury "to show how them rich because he was poor , but about "foreign" part , Chinese really don't care .

Hot Rod December 19th, 2011, 02:18 AM very true, and you can see the Chang Jiang (and bridge) in shot 3 - which is clearly Chongqing.
perhaps a simple mistake of identity of the building, but Im Not sure what is with some of the Chengdu posters, do they want to claim 'everything' as Chengdu in order to prop it up?? ......

US author John Naisbitt and his wife, Doris, on their latest trip to Beijing to promote their new book about China. Provided to China Daily
John and Doris Naisbitt's latest work examines the successful pioneering solutions of Sichuan's provincial capital in impressive detail. Mei Jia meets the authors.
John Naisbitt looked to Asia to trace the future of the world in his bestselling Megatrends series from 1982. The American author and futurist now looks to West China for answers that provide a key to the country's further development.
John Naisbitt and his wife Doris examine Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, took part in the "go-west" campaign that was launched nationwide in 1999. It became a template example of reforms integrating urban and rural areas in 2007.
To the Naisbitts, Chengdu is a pioneer in urban-rural integration and a case study in complexity with its population of 14 million.
They record their findings and thoughts in their latest work, Innovation in China: The Chengdu Triangle, the Chinese version of which was launched in early December in Beijing. The Naisbitts say they're editing and rephrasing the book for English-language readers and planning to launch it in the spring of 2012.
