I just found this and thought I'd share it with you guys. Seems the Arab world isn't the only place mega artificial island projects are being carried out...

[Business Times Online]

Enter Federation Island, a massive construction that is due to grace the Black Sea waters off Sochi in time for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Keen to show off its oil-driven wealth, Russia hopes to rival Dubai’s Palm and World artificial islands with the ambitious project.

Seven main islands and a series of smaller ones will imitate that shape of the world’s largest country, complete with luxury villas and cliffside homes, miniature forests and meandering rivers. The complex will have luxury homes, shops and offices over 330 hectares with room to house 25,000 people.

Allied Business Consultants, an Abu Dhabi company, will spend $6.2 billion building Federation Island, which is overseen by M-Industria of St Petersburg.

To design the grandiose project, M-Industria brought in the Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat, who is also leading the revamping of Canning Town for the 2012 London Olympics.

The artificial island, which will include the rivers, mountains and plains of Russia’s diverse landscape, will be connected to the shoreline, 300yds away, by a bridge and two tunnels. Once it is completed, it will no longer be necessary to brave -20C temperatures and days-long train rides to visit Russia’s Siberian heartland.

Congrats Russia!

This will leave Palm Island for dead; far more tasteful design and seems more subtle; not tacky like Dubai's aspirations.

The 2014 Winter Olympics are going to be fantastic for Russia. I visited Russia (from Irkutsk, Moscow and St. Petersburg) in June 2007 and I remember seeing things about the 2014 bid; I'm glad Sochi won!!

I think that project is disproportionate and extremely exaggerated. Why they don't just build alongside the existant coastline which is already very beautiful. With that 'Russia' island they destroy more than they obtain :ohno:

You're wrong. That coastline is pretty poor in the urbanisation, so we need some big projects there.

I have no idea but hopefully soon. I image it must be, seeing as London has already started and our olympics are 2 years before Russias.

Nice project, Dubai and Russia have another thing in common, first those shape-shifting towers and now, artificial islands.

How disappointing, I thought this thread would be about the 2014 Winter Olympics developments in Sochi. Instead, it's about another over the top island development. Isn't there plenty of nice coastline in southwestern Russia that could use the money that's going to be put into this development? Or is this a hoax?

^^ I think so too but then again people sometimes prefer to stay rural , underdeveloped when it comes to modernise the eviroment around them ,maybe this is one of the reasons

I'm actually expecting that this thread is about the developments in the Sochi Olympic Park... I actually find the design of the structures really amazing especially the Olympic Stadium... Why don't we just talk about Sochi Olympic developments here and not about this Federation Island development...

I don't belief it until a major load of it is actually finished.

Given the current global crises and given the problems one can hear regarding the olympic real estate developments I am quite skeptical that this project will be ever realized. Of course I can err, but thats my impression so far.

Why copycats? The japanese did it before the Dubai "hey, look at me, I exist" thing.

Search for Kansai Intl Airport and Maishima Sport Island.

Japan Invented man made islands. And if you want to get technical... America pioneered building out land in New York City and Lower Manhattan.

Siemens to build trains for Sochi Olympics - RZhD
29 December 2009

MOSCOW, Dec 29 (Reuters) - German engineering giant Siemens will build suburban trains for the Russian resort city of Sochi, host of the 2014 Winter Olympics, the head of Russian state railway firm RZhD said on Tuesday.

Sochi needs to build most of the Olympic venues and infrastructure from scratch, and upgrading the city's transport system is crucial to the success of the games.

"We have just signed a contract with Siemens to construct trains for the Olympic railway," Vladimir Yakunin, head of RZhD, told Russian television news channel Vesti-24.

Russia has pledged to spend as much as $12 billion in private and public money on developing the Black Sea resort.

Siemens built Sapsan, Russia's first high-speed train between Moscow and St Petersburg, and won a 30-year, 630 million euro ($907 million) deal to supply and service eight of the trains.
