This is really shitty news. I guess this was why the forum was down all day today ? Did anything else get purged ?
Interesting to see that only the 2 BIG threads got deleted- wonder if it was an inside job ? ( i.e a pissed off ex-forum member ............ or someone from Toronto ;) )

I cannot believe that my longest running thread has been deleted.

But the goodnews is that I have all my photo's which means I should keep this thread active.

a MILESTONE in World Towers construction..

Those concrete pillars at the top of the middle section have finally been painted white!! About time.

Culwulla, great picture. You know why? Because that east side of the tower has got that black glass creeping up over those balconies, where as those views we always see of the west side still have the construction elevator running on those balconies, thus no glass. That west side is still lookin messy.

That black glass 'skin' covering those balconies is a key feature of WT imo. It brings the premier and that section below it (whats it called again) together, and it is also an excellent contrast to the green of premier.

I cannot wait until that bloody construction elevator comes down and they give those concrete balconies jutting out a nice, black reflective skin :D

They have removed the floors that they stop at in the metro section and they are being cladded and getting the final job done before the people start to move in, which is about a week from now for those in the metro section.

Also, try and credit the photographer if you can remember who it is. If you can't then at least indicate that you did not take the picture yourself.

The first photo in Matixvolta's post is mine. Nice to see someone thought it was good enough to save ;).

I agree with what some people have said... That black glass covering the balconies really adds to the towers look. It will be great when it is finally finished.

the highest penthouse is levl79 or (69 above grd). it is just below the white painted area on core. (the last core floor with little square windows.) Its 211m above grd or RL227m.

Only 6 metres lower than the Q1 penthouse (higher RL heheh), also equal to around level 67 on Eureka. Does it take up more than one floor, has it been sold yet?

The penthouse is two levels tall and it will become the property of Meriton owner Harry Trigboff. If it were to be released for sale it would fetch $12 million.

Why do people keep saying that residents will start moving in before it is finished. It would be impossible to move into a building that is still under construction.

Can someone get a picture of the world tower foyer next time they are near it.

That is weird that people will be around all the construction work. I would have thought it would be too hazardous to have residents being around while it is still being built.

4 new noticable changes :

the first is that nearly all of the cladding is complete! only 2 or 3 panels to go on the eastern side

the second is that the spoke ontop of the beacon have been removed,

the third is that the scaffholding on the silver stuff on the northern balconies has been removed - the rest of the top bit will be encased with the same stufff the beacon is encased with.

the fourth is that there is this weird looking wood panels on the top od the core area (if ya know what ii mean) it was there in grey yesterday (probs steel) and today it was painted with some panels behind it to cover up the holes in the core!

VERY EXCITING!

I'm attending a Computer Aided Design ( CAD ) conference at the moment hosted by the people who supply Fender Katsilidas with their CAD software. To promote the conference they have produced 8 foot high banners each with a 4 foot long render of World Tower on them and the building looks absolutely awesome!

Tomorrow there will be a presentation on Eureka tower ( can't wait!) and I'm trying to get hold of a CD that contains a presentation done by David Sutherland ( the guy who designed Eureka). Aparently it contains some great stuff about the building, if I get my hands on one I'll see if I can post some of the material on here....no promises though!

As nice as it is to have "A Photo A Day" for WT, it can get a bit excessive. I'm sure when Crane gets his computer "unbroken" he'll have a true bounty for us.

As for me, I'm looking forward to the WT cranes coming down. Now that's a photo-worthy event.

Actually a guy here at work knows someone who works on cranes and apparently no chopper will be used. He reckons 1 crane will disassemble the other and then they will use a special crane that will go higher than the 1 remaining and disassemble this one. This *special* crane can apparently jack itself down after that. Confused?

No. They used the exact same method to bring down the cranes which built the SkyTower over here. It looks real cool when they are carrying it out, just wait and see.

I work for Lindores cranes & Rigging in Brisbane. If we had the contract to dismantle World Towers cranes we'd probably use a Favco recovery crane, erect it on the roof pull down the 2 tower cranes then use a smaller crane again to dismantle the Favco recovery crane and take the pieces down in the buildings elevators or the sites building hoist

WT is being completed in three sections. the first 25 floors consist of METRO section which i is about be opened . The (CENTRO) section to opened early next year and top (PREMIER) serviced apartments will be let late 2004.

Also they reported on Meritons plans to convert the apartments into dual use apartments including serviced apartments and the oversupply it could produce in the hotel market.

PM: A beauty, Harry, but where's the picket fence?
By Claire O'Rourke, Urban Affairs Reporter
September 23, 2003

From the top of the 75-storey World Tower building you can look down on most of Sydney with ease. But Meriton boss Harry Triguboff admires the spectacular view for another reason.

"When I look from the building I like to see the flats I have built here before," the property mogul said, glass of Moet in hand.

"This is a monument to me and all the people who have worked for Meriton over the years."

Last night the tallest residential building in the southern hemisphere was opened by the Prime Minister, John Howard.

The scene of the party was the unfinished - and barely air-conditioned - 74th floor.

Guests - including the city's Lord Mayor, Lucy Turnbull - ascended after queuing for the one operating lift.

"There is only one thing missing from this building, Harry," Mr Howard quipped during his speech. "There's no white picket fence."

Earlier, Mr Howard said the beautification and diversification of the city since World War II was owed to the "extraordinary contribution that developers and architects have made. One person has really been at the heart of that expansion.

"Harry epitomises what a lot of Sydney is about, somebody who has got hope and optimism and drive and determination."

The building, designed by the architectural firm Nation Fender Katsalidis, boasts some colossal statistics: 77,380 cubic metres of concrete, 275,000 square metres of Gyprock and 43,180 square metres of glass to date.

Despite the ongoing 16-hours-a-day construction, eager residents have moved into lower-floor apartments during the past three weeks.

Fifteen flats have been leased for weekly rentals of up to $380 for a studio and $680 for a two-bedroom apartment.

The top third of the building - 115 units - will become serviced apartments, which will be rented for up to $400 a night.

The tower is expected to take another year to finish and will eventually contain 637 apartments, 80 commercial suites and two child-care centres.

I really love the look of WT as well.. dont know why but has a touch of art deco character in terms of its shape.. call me crazy. Imagine the building in 'old world' materials..no glass. Thats one reason why i like WT. Heah, that's something that's been playing on my mind lately. When it's nice and sunny in Sydney, you look at WT's top levels, the Premiere levels with the green/blue cladding, and I don't know... the gree glass looks... not quite right. It's not dark enough.

But on a dark, grey day like the last few days, the top levels looks superb.

Don't know. Prolly just me and my weird thinking.

I still can't help but think that this will always be the site where Sydney lost it's first seriously tall scraper. Everything was there. Much lower ground than other parts of the city meaning you could build taller without it looking tooo tall from the North. It was in the south CBD way past Centrepoint so anything up to 270 metres wouldn't of taken away Centrepoint's domineering effect. I always look up to the tips of the North crane and wonder why they couldn't have built it to this height. Something in my mind says seriously tall to the crane tip but just normal to it's current height. I remember the early renderings had it at least 40 metres higher than current.

Fabian
October 11th, 2003, 11:53 PM
World Tower has actually reduced the dominance of Sydney Tower from the south. The top of the tower just reaches the bottom of the turret if you see it from my suburb and from areas such as Mascot some of the turret cannot be seen. 230 metres aint too bad.

Muse
October 12th, 2003, 01:32 AM
So true Fabian.

If anyone gets a chance to venture to Cleveland Street on the south side of Prince Alfred Park, World Tower appears taller than Sydney Tower.

Just the perspective at work. That of course means the appearance of things relative to one another as determined by their distance from the viewer.

It used to be the worst part of town when we had the lifeless world square site with the big hole in the ground and the rundown shops and nothing decent in the area.

But this development along with that of World Square and in surrounding Streets are revitalising the area, bringing people and to us guys more skyscrapers to admire, giving the northern CBD a run for it's money.

The BMU (Building Maintainance Unit) has been installed! It is quite large and can be seen easily ontop of the penthouse section. A 'Shed' is yet to be constructed over this.

Also, glass is appearing over the penthouse section, under the beacon, but this is not glass bricks. Its just glass, i think the glass bricks will be used for the actual lantern only?

yeah i remember a few months back i broke the news of the BMU shed that came in as a new DA . It will be 6m high and 15m longx10m wide. It will be silver anodised metal (like blades). steps in well with the other setbacks.
Also the "beacon" is probably better known as the LANTERN! Most people refer to it as this-even meriton and planners. A lantern lights up and stays constant brightness. A beacon tends to flash aka lighthouse.

AltiusAltiusAltius
October 20th, 2003, 07:39 AM
This panneling is very bad - the colour looks too white. Only when you're close to the WT it actually looks like panneling - otherwise appears like a cheap paint job and shines really bad in the sun! (I was checking it this Sat from Darling Harbour - morning and Moore Park - before sunset) :bash:

Fabian
October 20th, 2003, 07:52 AM
Altuis, check Sydneydudes photo's. From a distance it looks quite silvery, and is only really white when you see closeups eg Culwulla.

SydneyDude
October 20th, 2003, 08:03 AM
I agree fabian, it does look very slivery from a distance, eispecially in real life. I love how the sun reflects off it, its just supurb!

Up close it looks a bit whitish, but it still looks great!

What is bothering me however is the squares cut out of the blades for windows. They look terrible, and i hope they are covered up by some type of reflective glass, so that they blend in with the blade itself. The blade is supposed to be one huge feature, and these square cut-outs detract alot from this effect.

Other than that, im just curious if this dark class that we are seeing put onto the penthous levels will continue onto the whole of the lantern. Where are the glass bricks?? :?

btw @ Muse- no i wasnt driving! lol I was actually standing in darling harbour under the flyovers. I see why you thought i was driving, what appears to be a rear vision mirror is in the bottom left hand side of the pic, is actually something else !(not sure what it is). ! Also, that dark part at the top, which appears to be the roof of a car, is actually one of the flyovers!. Just a coincidence!

btw, I love the view from the loo at the "41" restaurant @ Chifley (just above the "39")....It is definitely the best piss in town! :D Can't wait for the Deutsche Bank tower to rise! It's gonna be the best vantage point to check out the anatomy of the Lord Foster's tower "crown cage"!

And the floor is vacant?

I arrange with Muse to go up that tower, and I only get to go up to level 28.

My thoughts exactly. Top pic Cul! Good to see that those columns are slowly being painted. Looks like they'll have to be recoated every 5 or so years since it is paint. What a job though... imagine dropping your paintbrush!

It's a construction area up there. I asked a worker to get a pic, he said he couldn't say yes or no, so I went and got one on my own accord. BTW, great shot down to 126 Phillip site.
