palindrome January 5th, 2008, 04:19 AM Hello,
This summer i will hopefully be spending three weeks in Kuwait studying. I just have a few general questions to correct my ignorance. If anyone could answer these i would be great full. I know these questions are going to sound truely ignorant, but I am asking them because i want to learn about Kuwait, and like i said, hopefully go and study there. Anyways, here are my questions:
1. What is the average temperate/climate like?
2. What should I wear? I assume shorts and t shirts is ok!
3. How much money will support me for three weeks? How is the US dollar there?
4. Is it safe?
5. What are fun things to do? Is there a nightlife/bars and clubs? Pro sports?
6. What are the must see sights?
Thank you all in advance! I am embarrassed to have to ask these, but please help!! :bash::banana:

first off, you're not ignorant. pretty common-sensical questions (you're coming to a new place, after all), and besides, life's a journey of discovery.
1. the average temperature is, to put it simply, really freaking hot. June, July and August are generally the hottest months and temperatures have been known to cross 51 °C (124 °F) during the day. nighttime is a bit stuffy but better off, although it can get incredibly humid.
2. shorts and t-shirts will do you wonders. maybe jeans and comfortable pants for nighttime, but even then you should be fine.
3. Kuwait's fairly upscale and it can get expensive depending on what you plan to do with your money. food is quite affordable if you plan to dine out, and shopping ranges on all notches on the financial spectrum (bring more money if you plan to get stuff, the malls in Kuwait are the devil). the Kuwaiti dinar is the world's highest valued currency unit, where 1 KD = 3.66 USD (as of January 5, 2008).
4. the country is very safe. crime is low-key and foreigners rarely find trouble here. it's safe to walk the streets at night whether you're in downtown, Salmiya (where all the action and malls are) or the suburbs.
5. fun things... the malls. from The Avenues and The Marina to Souk Sharq and the Fanar, Kuwait's loaded with malls, and they're where a lot of people hang out. there is no nightlife to speak of, since alcohol and nightclubs are forbidden here. water sports are plentiful; you can rent jet-skis, go scuba-diving and parasailing or swimming at any beach. there's also paintball, laser tag, health clubs, your everyday video arcades and whatnot.
6. the Kuwait Towers are the symbols of the country, so you can't miss those. i've heard the Grand Mosque in downtown Kuwait is an enjoyable sight, as well. if you're into museums, the Tareq Rajab Museum has a lot of Islamic art and pieces; the Kuwait National Museum also has a few pieces here and there. check out the Sadu House for ethnic handicrafts and traditional items, the Dickson House on the Sharq seafront (it used to be the former residence of the British Commissioner to Kuwait in 1929). probably the most fascinating one is the Scientific Center in Salmiya; it has an IMAX theater and one of the world's best aquarium facilities. here's a website with more references: http://www.arab.net/kuwait/kt_attractions.htm
i hope this was of some help. if you need anything at all, let me know.

Go with Jazeera Airways (http://www.jazzeraairways.com). Prices start at ~ US$120. Don't forget to bring a hat, sunblock and to drink plenty of fluids :)
SLion January 5th, 2008, 06:53 PM Kuwait-Dubai on Jazeera is, like KD5.
SLion January 5th, 2008, 06:54 PM Desert Camping is really fun, especially in Winter.
palindrome January 5th, 2008, 10:48 PM Thanks everyone! This thread has me really excited to go to Kuwait now!!
Koweitien January 6th, 2008, 02:19 AM No problem.

Yeah, that's how low cost airlines always get you. KD5 would be for a single leg of the journey excluding taxes and charges.
When I last checked the website the ticket was advertised as being KD8 but after the taxes and charges it became KD39 for a return ticket.
