Just got back from this interesting city and will gradually upload my pictures here. I went everywhere, started with City Hall area then went to Old City by Market street, then to Washington Square, the whole historical park area, Elfreths Alley and back to the center through streets close to Walnut (dont remember which ones), then the whole Benjamin Franklin Pkwy area and finally the downtown. It was my first time in the downtown of Philadelphia and was surprised how it feels so huge, skyline pictures don't really give an impression of how big and dense it is.

What I found to be very interesting is that the city atmosphere is completely different in all three areas. Old City feels like a village, everyone is calm and walks very slowly, while the downtown feels like Manhattan. Though I don't get it why are there so many taxis, the city (at least its center) is completely in walkable distances.

Nice pictures, so far. I took pictures of Center City for the first time myself last week. It will take me a while to get those pictures uploaded, though, since I have scores of cities and neighborhoods that I still have to do.

The Old City is pretty big and not entirely old, between old buildings you'll find fairly new ones that are mimicking the old and other ones that aren't even doing that. This area has a very calm, relaxed, village-like atmosphere. Very suitable for walks in the parks when it's warm (and it was very warm).

Now we're walking out of the Old City through Washington square and going towards the Downtown, but this time instead of taking a commercial street (the Market st) I took what I think was Locust or Spruce street.

It was a surprisingly nice residential street with often almost Parisian style buildings, but also Georgian and others. From time to time a tiny and very old looking street would appear at an perpendicular angle, similar to the previously mentioned and shown Elfreth's alley.

Love this thread! Thanks for all your hard work, I know how much time it takes to put this sort of thing together.

The building with the rounded glass at the top is the Kimmel Center - home of the Philadelphia Orchestra- they moved there from next door, The Academy of Music which is the building with the 'flaming lanterns' attached to the front.

Now I proceed down towards the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, which is the main monumental artery of the city, somewhat like the Pennsylvania ave in Washington D.C. (which you can see in my other thread ;) )

Now we're at the Rittenhouse park, sort of their a la Manhattan Central Park, very nice place where people walk their dogs and just hang out. It's surrounded by architecture of various styles, but since it was so dark it was difficult to capture it. It is located right outside the downtown so it is easily visible, providing a vibrant scenery.

Awesome photos! Philly is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) The true underground mall is The Gallery, not the concourse that connects City Hall and Suburban Station (where you where).

I am definitely someday, somehow, looking forward to visiting this great city, its architecture never seizes to amaze, even though I have not seen it in real life, the pictures say it all! Thanks!

The many pictures you have taken ... some so lovely ... are a real "love letter" to the City Of Brotherly Love. We Philadelphians thank you ever so much!

My only comment is that I hope everyone realizes that these pictures were taken in the dead of winter, when the days are the coldest and the shortest; the quality of the light is grey and cool; the trees are leafless and dormant. I can only hope you will come back during the warmer months when the skies are bluer the light more golden, the trees and grass greener ... and ... THE FOUNTAINS ARE TURNED ON!

I've probably spent more time in Philly than any other city that I haven't actually lived in. So, there will always be a bit of a connection there for me.
