View Full Version : OMAHA | Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge
omahajayscu January 10th, 2008, 08:10 AM Construction is underway on the Missouri River Pedestrian bridge which will serve as the centerpiece of Omaha and Council Bluff's riverfront revival, as well as connect hundreds of miles of bike trails on both sides of the river. The $25 million bridge, which was paid for through a mixture of federal, state (NE and IA), city (Omaha and Council Bluffs), and private funds, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

lpioe January 10th, 2008, 05:53 PM Wow, great design, I love it.
omahajayscu January 10th, 2008, 09:16 PM I just noticed that in the second picture there are two workers on the bridge. Wow, do they look tiny or what? This thing is massive!
xXFallenXx January 11th, 2008, 10:14 PM WOW. nice!
why is it curvy like that though?
There doesn't really seem to be a reason for it.

My guess is just for aesthetic purposes. The goal of this bridge is to connect bike trails on the Iowa and Nebraska side of the metro, so I guess just to make if have more of a trail feel.
ChrisZwolle January 12th, 2008, 01:26 AM I cycling become more popular in the States?
I heard the new I-80 bridge near Oakland also gets cycling lanes.
jkjkjk January 12th, 2008, 04:08 AM $25 million pedestrian and bicycle bridge ? WOW
omahajayscu January 12th, 2008, 04:13 AM $25 million pedestrian and bicycle bridge ? WOW
Former Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey got $17 million of it from the federal government as his "going away present" to top off the riverfront redevelopment. The states of Nebraska and Iowa threw in a few million each, as did the cities of Omaha and Council Bluffs. The rest of it (a few million) was covered by private donations.
omahajayscu January 17th, 2008, 11:07 PM a little update
A new family park is being planned on the landing of the Omaha side of the bridge.

urbanjim February 27th, 2008, 05:08 AM Awesome bridge!!! Although smaller in scale, it's very similar in design to another fantastic Midwestern river crossing: the Clark Bridge over the Mississippi at Alton, Illinois. This one is no less majestic. Congrats to the Omaha area!

MarkoISU March 15th, 2008, 10:12 PM Wow, looks like its quite a bit off money for a pedestrian bridge but if you take that out off the equation, the design off the bridge looks great, modern, and the curving fits in well with the pedestrian thing.
Do you know who the GC is on this project?
omahajayscu March 31st, 2008, 08:02 AM The steel portion of the bridge construction is almost complete. As of today, only 4 sections of steel decking remain to connect the bridge!
