View Full Version : Australian Greek Orthodox Churches
Giorgio January 10th, 2008, 05:02 PM The Australian counterpart to the USA thread in this forum.
I have noticed that Australian churches don't seem as architecturally appealing as the North American ones.

Ill get some from my local church next time I'm there.
LEAFS FANATIC January 10th, 2008, 05:16 PM Thanks for the pic Giorgio, but your assessment that "North American" cities don't have a lot of Greek Orthodox Churches, is false (especially for the ones where the number of the Greek diaspora is significant).
In the city of Toronto alone, we have 15 churches. If you add the surrounding siburbs and other municiplaities, we have well over 30:

Giorgio January 12th, 2008, 12:17 PM In that case, ill change my first post.
I got the wrong impression when hearing about US cities with smaller Greek populations probarbly. :)
Grk101 January 12th, 2008, 07:29 PM Alittle off topic (in this topic) but regarding Churches in the US, you can do a search by city or state for them here: http://www.goarch.org/en/parishes/
If you do a blank search, it says that there are X of 541 records available. Don't know if thats accurate or not, but thats in the US alone. :p
Giorgio January 13th, 2008, 03:54 PM According to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, there are 131 parishes in the country.
Heres the state by state figures:
(number per state)
Victoria (45)
New South Wales (40)
South Australia (20)
Queensland (11)
Western Australia (7)
Northern Territory (3)
Tasmania (3)
Australian Capital Territory (1)
Though the figures don't include churches that do not belong to the Archdiocese of Australia which may account for as much as 100 churches Australia wide.

St Nicholas in Marrickville ^^is probably one of the better (aesthetically speaking) Greek Orthodox Churches in Australia. Your picture shows its rear elevation only (not necessarily its best view). It actually has quite an ornate Romance style entrance along its front elevation.
Built in the 1960s my immigrants in what was at the time a heavily greek populated suburb.
...Its copper top domes have become a local landmark and the building is listed as a local heritage item (listed monument).
Giorgio May 31st, 2008, 07:58 AM St George at Mile End. Largest Greek church in Adelaide.

SonOfSparta August 19th, 2008, 06:53 PM Are the majority of the Greek Orthodox Churches in Australia built as new structures by the Greek community or are they converted former buildings of different denominations?
Both our main oldest churches in Toronto are converted places of worship.
St. George was originally built in 1897 as a Jewish temple and sold to the Greek Community in 1937. It has a Romanesque façade and few Moorish capitals the interrior icons were painted in their entirety by the Pachomaioi monks, Theophilos and Chrysostomos, master iconographers from Mount Athos, Greece in the 1980s. The only church in all of Canada to be painted by these master iconographers.

The Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Toronto's west end acquired in 1961 was once the North Parkdale United Church, much of the building has gothic inspired architecture, such as the doors and windows. Partially destroyed by fire in 2000 it now has a rebuilt roof and interrior.

1821 August 19th, 2008, 06:57 PM All the churches I posted above are built by the Greek community(not the GOCSA Inc, but in general)
I don't know about other states. However I think even recently, there have been new churches built but again, not sure.

kazan763 October 3rd, 2008, 12:03 AM I know in Sydney, there are a few churches which have been converted from other places of worship. Like the Annuciation Cathedral home of the Archbishop in Redfern, St Stephanos at Hurlstone Park, St Nectarios at Burwood. These churches were former Anglian types and feature sandstone type construction, timber roof framing, slate roof tiling etc.
Of note is the newly established parish of St Therapon up at Thornleigh which utilises a timber structure/weatherboard clad church.
There are many others. I will try to post some pics soon.
papanikola September 15th, 2009, 01:53 AM I must admit that my Church in Brisbane (Australia) would have to be the most non-Orthodox style of architecture in the whole of the country. I am still working on the refurbishment plans (if anyone wants I can post the drafts here - I would like some feedback)... I'm having problems uploading photos, but here's one from the website...

1821 September 16th, 2009, 09:28 PM That's pretty different.
I think that, and the one in Coober Pedy(which is underground I think), are probably the two most non-Orthodox style churches.
