Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. Residents are called Madrileños.
The city is located on the river Manzanares in the center of the country, between the autonomous communities of Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha. Due to its economic output, standard of living, and market size, Madrid is considered the major financial center of the Iberian Peninsula; it hosts the head offices of the vast majority of the major Spanish companies, as well as the headquarters of three of the world's 100 largest companies. As the capital city of Spain, seat of government, and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also the political center of Spain. The current mayor is Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, of the conservative Partido Popular.
As the capital of Spain, Madrid is a city of great cultural and political importance. While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the huge Royal Palace of Madrid; the Teatro Real (Royal theatre) with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro park, founded in 1631; the imposing 19th-century National Library building (founded in 1712) containing some of Spain's historical archives; an archaeological museum of international reputation; and three superb art museums: Prado Museum, which hosts one of the finest art collections in the world, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, a museum of modern art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, housed in the renovated Villahermosa Palace.
The population of the city was 3.2 million (December 2005), while the estimated urban area population was 5.1 million. The entire population of the Madrid metropolitan area (urban area and suburbs) is calculated to be 5.84 million. The city spans a total of 607km² (234 sq mi).
Following the restoration of democracy in 1975 and Spain's integration into the European Union, Madrid has played an increasing role in European finances, marking the city as one of the most important European metropolises. Yet each district (or barrio in Spanish) still preserves its own feel.

Phriggin' Ogre August 30th, 2003, 05:21 AM The city has some very nice architecture, too bad the skyline has a lot of big gaps. 6.5/10 now... most likely the skyline will look MUCH better when all of the projects going on are completed.
zulu69 September 10th, 2003, 04:44 PM I love this city. Ok the skyline isnt the best so i awared it 8.5. but only because if anyone visits that city you will fall in love with it. It clean and alive. If this site was down to the cit itself then madrid would get an easy 10. The food the ppl the night life. The monuments are so beautiful. Plaza Mayor is gorgeous!!!
My dream is now to live there in 3-4 years ! If you havent been there yet.. LEAVE tomoro!!!
Metropolis2020 September 10th, 2003, 06:42 PM the city is beautiful but the skyline is mediocre 6/10
Big! September 16th, 2003, 08:08 PM 6.5/10
alex3000 October 10th, 2003, 01:57 AM 6.5/10
PB October 10th, 2003, 11:36 AM 9/10 ;)
SoboleuS October 10th, 2003, 04:29 PM Madrid looks OK  But skyline is not very impressive for the city of that size... :|
7/10 is enough
Chibcha2k October 14th, 2003, 07:13 AM ....bahh 7.5
Trances November 12th, 2003, 06:30 PM That white one one of the best boxes I have every seen
The rest of the city has a few towers of note
But nothing much compared to some of the skylines on here
so low vote of 5
Kaneda November 14th, 2003, 12:14 AM 7/10 ... Its pretty good. But needs some buildings that really stands out, but luckily it will soon get some. :)
alex3000 November 15th, 2003, 09:33 AM 7/10
Sniper November 16th, 2003, 08:07 PM 7.5/10
leealex_24 November 17th, 2003, 03:17 PM Lots of buildings, but, not necessarily nice ones. But, then, there are also interesting and beautifully architectured buildings, I give it a 7/10
Xobi December 11th, 2003, 11:25 PM I know our skyline isn't the best but just look at some of the urban photos i've put in here. Madrid doesn't have big 300m blocks but a lot of small, old skyscrapers. The Telefonica building was built in 1918 and was one of the first skyscrapers to be built in the whole of Europe.

Just wait because 2 towers of 250 m and another 2 of 215m are on their way...they also bring with them a cluster of 15 skyscrapers which are to be built in the next 10.15 years or so and that could easily surpass the 300m barrier and even reach 400m who knows???. Also their are a small group of not approved projects which include a 220m tower and another 50 storey (height unkown but to be between 200-250m).
Just for know the "madrileños" can be proud of living in one of the most lifefull, amusing and complete cities in Europe and one of the few which never sleeps (traffic jams can be seen at 3 or 4 am in the morning in the Gran Via and some streets have more people during the night than in daytime.)
So...it's just a matter of time :D
PegRules04 February 8th, 2004, 04:36 PM Madrid looks like a beautiful city with stunning old architecture and alot of towers....I'll give it an 8!

gandalfff30 June 29th, 2004, 02:45 PM The skyline with the mountains and the snow its great. I gave it an 8. Thanx for the photographs. In five years you'll see an 11/10 skyline... lol
claroscuro July 2nd, 2004, 09:51 AM Madrid's skyline is not the greatest (8/10), but who cares, this is a city ment to be admired closely. It's only too vibrant and personal. It's a city to be experienced.
However, if anyone is still concerned with Madrid's skyline, it does have great density and lots of green... so it sort of makes up for the lack of really tall skyscrapers and a waterfront (something that can always make an effect).
But really, if you are in Madrid, go to bars, walk a lot, try to mingle with the locals, and forget about its skyline. It has so much better things.
Polishman July 2nd, 2004, 04:05 PM Madrid looks like American cities especially at this photo

I come frome Madrid and i think that our skyline is not very good, and when skyscrapers were built we didnt thought in the future skyline, but well, we have a great city.
7/10.
Saludos!!

RicardoSSA September 16th, 2005, 02:51 AM I've been there and i think it's an absolutely great city. Very nice architecture, infrastructure and life quality. The skyline may not be AMAZING, but it's quite interesting in it's own way. 9.5/10 for the city itself, but as the grade is for the skyline I'll only give it a 6.5.
firmanhadi September 16th, 2005, 03:17 AM Although Puerta de Europa is quirky, Madrid's skyline is nothing special. Other than that, it's a great city full of history. I love walking along Paseo de Recoletos.
Raleigh-NC September 16th, 2005, 03:09 PM Photos don't do justice to Madrid, or its skyline. Sure, we are not discussing La Defense (Paris), but seeing the area where the towers are with your own two eyes makes a HUGE difference. Madrid has some of the nicest towers, in my opinion :okay: As for the city, as a whole, Madrid is a truly great place to visit and live. Very underrated, I think. It is a neat city, especially considering its size. Madrid can do even better in terms of skyline, but the street-level experience is outstanding. One of the finest cities in the world; looking forward to visiting again.

And I personally don't suscribe to it, but some people (arrogantly) call my city the capital of the world. Using their and your logic, my city then craps all over yours. :D
Luckily for you, I don't.
As a skyline, Madrid will only enter big once the ARENA is completed. But in terms of a city, one of the most dynamic in the world. And I love it, and have fallen in love with it everytime I have been there.

A+

driftingsun January 22nd, 2010, 01:04 AM Huh? Madrid only gets a 5.5, but you give Visby Sweden a 10?? For me, the slightly post-modern quatro torres bump Madrid to 8.5, possibly 9/10.
