Lyon (British English formerly Lyons) (pronounced /ljɔ̃/ in French) is a city in east central France.
Together with its suburbs and satellite towns, Lyon forms the second largest metropolitan area in France after Paris, and approximately the 20th to 25th largest metropolitan area of Western Europe.
Lyon is the capital of the Rhône-Alpes région, and the préfecture (capital) of the Rhône département.
The city gave its name to the Lyonnais province, of which it was the capital. Today the region around Lyon is still known as Lyonnais (French: le Lyonnais), or sometimes even as the Lyonnaise Region (French: Région Lyonnaise). Lyonnaise Region is an unofficial, popular name, not to be confused with the administrative région of Rhône-Alpes, which is much larger than the Lyonnaise Region.

Blackbelt Jones May 5th, 2004, 09:18 PM Oh, I don't think any one is doubting just how beautiful Lyon is (for what it's worth, my sister lived there and she says it's her favorite city in the world). I mean, those pics say it all! :)
But, to be fair, this IS a forum called "Rate our Skylines," NOT "Rate our Cities." And, to that end, you HAVE to admit that a skyline consisting of one, lone tower amidst a sea of 4 and 5 story buildings is kind of funny. ;)
So, Lyon the city gets a "10." Lyon the Skyline gets a "5"

gun57 August 5th, 2004, 12:54 AM Lyon is certainly one of the most beautiful european city but i have to admit that its skyline is not really impressive. In the other hand only one skyscraper it 's quite original.
Definitely i prefer this view than those of asian cities.
i'd give it a 10 to balance the stupid unfair votes 3-or-less

The credit lyonnais tower is the greatest tower in France outside Ile-de-france (Paris region). It is sometimes compaired with a pencil. An 115 meter tower is in project. But in France, it is difficult to build skyscrapers in our old cities. Many people are against towers.

Yet there needs to be taller and shorter buildings or some part of the city on higher land, so that when smo looks at the horizon, they see some buildings there.

tigerboy January 25th, 2007, 04:53 PM It's a French city so "savoir faire" and "savoir batir" inform its structure. It is thus almost innoculated against ugliness and naturally it is beautiful.
Skyline is as much about the gothic and romanesque as it is about 'scrapers so despite a marked lack of height it is still a fine skyline.

Lyon is my city, so I may be biased but I can't give it less that an 10 because as a European, I don't think a skyline is only skyscrapers, but the whole impression given when you look at a city from far away, or from a high point of view.

It is AXA-UAP tower, abandonned since 1995
This tower will be destroyed for another tower ( Tour Incity : 200 m )

Since 2015 Lyon Mayor want 7 or 8 new tower in Lyon business district called " Part Dieu " which is in the center of the town ( La defense in Paris is outside of the town of paris for exemple )
But Lyon is beautifull for the Roman vestige,for the " Vieux Lyon" ( Medieval time ) and for 19th construction ( like Haussmann in Paris,but in Lyon it was by the " Prefet Vaïsse")
