Monterrey IPA: [ˌmontɛˈrei] (Spanish: Monterrey (help·info)) is the capital city of the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León and a municipality of the same name. Also known as the "City of the Mountains" and "Sultana del Norte" (Sultanette of the North), the city is a modern industrial and business center. It is the third most populated metropolitan area in the country, has the highest GDP per capita of all metropolitan areas in Mexico and is also the second largest in area after Mexico City. The whole metropolitan area has been ranked as having the highest GDP per capita and as the most secure conurbation in Latin America in 2005 and one of the two most secure in 2006.
The city is named after the Countess of Monterrei (a city in Galicia, Spain) wife of the Viceroy of New Spain Gaspar de Zúñiga y Acevedo, Count of Monterrey

there where no high buildings 5 years ago :)
It was an stupid law that didnt permit to build high towers from late 60´s to late 80´s.
Javier September 25th, 2003, 08:35 PM It has a spread skyline, but it has pretty attractive settings too, i don't think that its skyline is ugly, instead i think is different, it has a special quality in open areas, very clean and well ordered city.

I have never seen this skyline.
8.5!
JoeBox October 26th, 2003, 05:49 AM It's a bit tough to say that Monterrey does not have a skyline just because it does not look like New York or Hong Kong.
It does have a skyline but you have to put it in the contest that it is. It's part of latin america and besides the capital of the countries I can bet that it has one of the top 5 skylines of all latin american cities.
This city is growing rapidly. Give it 10 years and It will look as neat as the top 30 cities of the world.
So placing it in its current context I'll give it a 9.5

Christianmx January 16th, 2004, 11:29 PM The first time I went to Monterrey I was driving and my girlfriend was with me and neither one of us know the city because were are not from there. We went into the city to do all the tourist stuff and surprisingly we didn't get lost. I think it is rather easy to drive around Monterrey, the signs are pretty easy to follow and you can usually get in and out of this city pretty quickly ;)

x-playo September 23rd, 2005, 08:35 AM beautiful city, great buildings, great natural landscapes
on the skyline department i give it 8.5 because of the natural settings and its great beginning...
yes its not many buildings, and yes, they are not supertall, yes they are not all located within one square mile... but for the characteristics of this city they are great
btw... to all the people who say it looks unorganized, etc i've lived in atlanta for several years now and from the times i have visited monterrey (driving) i found that the roads are set up much better there, its easier to get around, and the roads are in much better condition..... so i conclude that monterrey is a very well organized city

Karltj January 2nd, 2006, 02:27 AM For a city of such importance in Mexico as Monterrey it does have a skyline thats too plain looking and boring. From the pics you can only see a few tall buildings scattered all over the place, the rest looks pretty flat and not very interesting, except for the mountains (like the cerro de la silla).
Recently I went to the Monterrey forum and saw some news about the possibility of buiding in the future a business district, but don't really remember the details.
For now a 5.

Tico December 4th, 2006, 01:37 AM I really like the way the tallest buildings are distributed all over the city. I like it this way, then the city's downtown feels like an open space. It feels awesome just to take a walk around the Macroplaza, you can look around and see lots of mountains and this is because downtown is not full of tall buildings, otherwise everything you could see from the Macroplaza would be nothing but concrete and glass. Don't get me wrong, I love Monterrey's buildings, but I think it's awesome that they aren't concentrated in a single spot.
8/10

I can't be that optimistic. I guess Monterrey could use 2 or 3 dozens of tall buildings to get a good 7/10.
The good news is it'll get tall buildings by the dozens, because Monterrey has the spirit and the money.

2.- Acapulco
3.-Monterrey
4.-Guadalajara, etc, etc, etc...

Hi El Champo.. just wanted to inform you that the name of the website you are posting your shitty posts on is called SKYSCRAPERcity.COM... I'm so happy with your honest ratings that I would like to give your cities my deepest, most sincere, truely honest ratings.
Not to spite anyone but if this is how one will play the stupid little rating game I might as well take a realistic crack at it.
My honest opinion; nothing particularly special about this skyline at all. I love the fake 60 wall street that stands almost alone among low rises. Makes for a real nice skyline. The mountain thing is not unique to you either so UH OH nothing new there as well. While this may seem harsh giving US cities below 5 is pretty goddamned stupid if you are on a website dedicated to the skyscraper. Wanna know who created the modern skyscraper? Chicago the city you probably voted a 4 which puts anything in Mexico or any other place really to shame. Who popularized the skyscraper and skyline? New York City. You gave Gotham a 5..... Jealous much? Whatever you say dude that's how I see it. Good choke on your jealousy, you suck. You got my honest opinion. Take it however you want it.
Rizzato January 22nd, 2007, 06:06 AM This guy from Mexico tries to talk smack about the U.S. skylines.
I find it so funny how he rates all our skylines "not impressive" "too big" or "too many murders".

FM 2258 February 24th, 2007, 07:47 AM Wow, Monterrey looks pretty cool.
