Hobart is the state capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. Founded in 1803 as a penal colony, it is Australia's second oldest and eleventh largest city, with a metropolitan population of approximately 202,000. The city is the financial and administrative heart of Tasmania, and also serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations.

Clem August 31st, 2003, 11:41 AM One of Australia's smallest capital cities, but also one of the most beautiful. The skyline might not be the best, but it has everything else.

A city with a beautiful setting, Hobart unfortunately has its tallest away from the centre, and its core is dominated by boring oldish buildings. There are now some more residentials going up around the centre which will add to the skyline, but still it is too short and not very well focused.
arielbender June 2nd, 2004, 01:13 PM If Hobart only has a population of 47K, I would never had guessed that from these photos. I love it and give it an 8/10
Jimmy James June 2nd, 2004, 01:28 PM Metro population is closer to 200 thousand made up of about 5 municipalities.
Truly a stunning city to visit, definitely one of my favourite CBD's, brilliant setting and the wharf is great.
TYW June 4th, 2004, 06:35 AM Hobart, famed for it's hills and sea, not skyline.

for a city of only 47k (160k metro) it is pretty nice.
thought i would run a google to the figures above and the australian bureau of statistics had the metro population of hobart at 191k back in 2001. its ballooned since then to well over 200k.
i am from hobart. there has been a massive influx of older people from sydney and melbourne. only recently has tasmania returned a net growth and not a loss in terms of population.
but thats ok cause i now live in melbourne :)
anyway i wont go on, but the city is a bit bigger than anyone imagines, and quite frankly, more suburbs and more buildings would only ruin the tranquil setting.
HK or NYC it aint, but thats the way we like it ;)

Agent Orange December 2nd, 2004, 10:22 PM I give it a 5.5 mainly for scenery, it looks beautiful there. What is the climate like there?
Osborne December 3rd, 2004, 01:45 PM I love Tasmania. It's not high on urbanity, but relative to many places around the world, it would be a very high quality of life. It's so clean, so beautiful and so wild. The taste of the tap water in hobart more than compensates for its lack of skyscrapers, and the wilderness in the west is among the most unspoilt forest anywhere in the world. I remember hearing once that samples were taken of Tasmania's air quality, and it was the purest in the inhabited world, owing to the westerly trade winds being uninterupted over six thousand kilometres of cold ocea, before they reached the west coast. I like the sound of that.
Its climate would be temperate maritime, with cool winters and occasional snow at sea level, but warm summers with lots of sunshine. I also understand that the west is much wetter and windier than the east

Occasional snow at sea level? Must be *very* occasional because I can't remember it happening!
Nice long days in summer.. doesn't start to get dark till after 9pm..
West is the wet and cold end, the east is the warm end (popular beaches, even in winter!)

As others have said, the middle part of your comment proves the first part. And about the last part, it's fairly well known that many young people leave Tasmania for the mainland looking for work.

Brisbaner21 July 25th, 2007, 02:36 AM 7/10. Its a great city of about 202,000. Its got an ok skyline, but the scenic views are awesome.

And how exactly has Perth ever benefit from being a whole 3 hours closer in flight than the rest of the country? Australia in general is a long way from other parts of the world, so why bother splitting hairs?? Cairns is closer to North America than anywhere else in Aust, think it makes a difference?!

romanito January 19th, 2010, 04:08 PM It's incredible the number of cities with skyline that is Australia. Important building development in its urban centers. I like Hobart...just one question, which took place in importance in the country?

But Hobart looks awesome when the Aurora Australis is over it.
linum July 27th, 2011, 01:32 PM The skyline is small but the surrounds are stunning... I doubt Hobart will ever build serious 200m+ towers as it's too small but who knows...
