Bangladesh in my own words

Salam/ hi guys,

First of all, I must say that Bangladesh is an amazing country to visit and I had an enjoyable and fascinating 10 days in this friendly and very welcoming nation.

Thanks to my Bangladeshi friends Mr. Mahmud and Mr Faruk for hosting and guiding me for 10 days during my visit there.

I spent 5 days in the capital Dhaka and another 5 days in other areas- namely Bandarban, Cox's Bazaar + Himchari , Teknaf + St. Martin Island, Chittagong and Chapai Nawabganj . In Dhaka I stayed with Mr Faruk's family ( middle-class family ) in one Baridhara. It's located north of central Dhaka. I got 5-star treatment in their house. They allocated a very comfortable room for me and prepared very delicious meal all the time . I was heartily touched by their hospitality and would love to come again :) I was able to see and experience the daily life and cultural practise of Bangladeshi people.

In the 9th day me and Mobassher traveled to his hometown in Chapai Nawabganj and stayed in his village for 1 night . It is located only 35 kilometres from Indian border. Again I was impressed by the genuine hospitality of the people I met there. Many of them speak excellent English and can debate well about any global issues , in such rural and isolated place !

Before coming , I heard a lot of negative potrayal of Bangladesh such as extreme poverty and unending political crises. In fact, I found Bangladesh to be totally different which is far more developed and extremely safe for tourists. Dhaka is a lovely city which combines both modern and traditional. Modern impressive buildings stand next to traditional old shops. Food is superb, tremendous, and very cheap ! Among all countries I've ever been to, this is the only place where photos can be taken at almost everywhere, without any restrictions . Crime rate is low, and I feel very safe and secured all the time . Of coure Bangladesh has many natural wonders and exotic culture, but in my opinion the No.1 attraction of Bangladesh is the people. They are very friendly and hospitable, and extremely courteous.

So why Bangladesh ?

1) It's a peaceful and a very safe country to travel. Save for some street protests, crime rate is low

2) Very easy to move around and it's the most hassle-free country in South Asia . No pushy salesmen, the people are easygoing and you'll feel comfortable. Buses are brand-new, and road standard is decent to excellent . Rickshaws and CNG ( auto ) makes travel so easy in Dhaka and all major cities. Speeding and honking is common, but drivers in general know how to control their driving. Bangladesh has 150 million people, but last year only 3,000 deaths reported on the streets.

3) Bangladeshi people, are super friendly and very hospitable.

4) There are so many natural and cultural attractions , including the World's longest Beach in Cox Bazaar ( 120 km ) and the world's largest Mangrove swamp in Sundarban. Food is superb, and rural area is always green and beautiful.

Bangladesh is said to have 2 natural wonders of the world : the world's longest sea beach in Cox's Bazaar and the world's largest Mangrove swamp at Sundarban.

That's a real chipper of a trip report there Skyprince! I'm surprised at how Dhaka is looking nice and developed, at least relatively speaking.

Sukkiri, Bangladesh is the most underrated country in the world in my opinion. International media only interested to highlight the negative sides of a nation . Dhaka is developing very quickly with so many constructions. My friend said Dhaka is expanding fast to the north ( Baridhara, Gulshan, Uttara direction )

Cox's Bazaar

Frankly speaking I've never been to such a happening and lively beach as in Cox's Bazaar. The beach is soo open and you can't see the end. It's the longest beach in the world , uninterrupted for almost 120 kms. The waves make swimming so perfect and enjoyable. There are thousands of Bangladeshis and tourists flocking to the main beach, with hundreds of huts lining the coast. Me, Mobasher and Faruk stayed in Diamond Hotel on Kalatali Road. It's a nice hotel with spacious room and balcony. Room rate is only 1,200 takas ( $18 ) per night . So we divided it into three.. each of us paid $ 6 per night.

Himchori

Himchori is only 10 km south of downtown Cox's Bazaar, we went there by CNG and took only 15 minutes. We climbed up the hill and tada...... The most beautiful sunset I've ever seen in my life ! The sun's movement is very clear and the wide open sea relects the exceptionally beautiful light of the sunset ! One thing I noticed in Bangladesh is that the sun is always clear and the sunset sky is very beautiful.

Back to Cox's Bazaar

In the evening we went to a Milad ( spelling ) , a funfair held on Cox's Bazaar main beach. There is a Mini theme park with rides such as Ferris wheel, Merry go-round etc, with entertainment like Circus and Puppet show, plus exotic local shops.

Cox's Bazaar to Teknaf . Then....to St. Martin Island !!

We woke up early at 6 a.m. then rushed to the bus station for Teknaf. Our ferry's departure time is 9:30 a.m so we must get to Teknaf jetty on time. Faruk book our tickets which is on Keary Sindbad ferry to St. Martin, and we returned to Teknaf on the same day at 3:00 p.m. Teknaf is like a border town between Bangladesh and Myanmar

Narikel Jinjira.. St Martin Island

St Martin Island is a small and handsome island with very beautiful and crystal clear water . I was informed that heavy development is not permitted on St Martin. Everything here is natural and original. The whole perimeter of this 8 km X 4 km island is beach, uninterrupted ! There is no specific "main beach" ( like Thai and Malaysian islands ) because beach is continuous and water is crystal-clear everywhere. It's a new concept for me. You'll find hundreds of exotic "sampans" ( traditional boats ) used by local fishermen and looking at their shape you'll feel as if transported back to thousands of years back. The beach is first-class with perfect waves and I enjoyed swimming there very much ! :)

Lol Khalek, the thing I like very much about BD is that food price ( except for fast food ) is very cheap considering how delicious it is . I tasted rejaala, korma, dhal , kichori and biryani rice etc. and
now I miss them really.

Thanks Amar, Sharif, Tmac and Tanzir-- For me Bangladesh is like 2nd home and they all treat me like family and very close friend. Inshllah if BD has quality leadership , it will become more developed than any " Asian Tigers " , due to its strong, hardworking and highly-curious population.

Congrats for having such a trip. I am delighted to see all the pics. The food looks really delicious. I can hardly control my desire for them.

Looks like you are using your hand to eat. Are your comfortable in doing so and do you eat like that at home too (without forks and knives)?

Thanks guyz, really, food is among the greatest tourism product of Bangladesh but very few people realize it. Many people , including me, didn't know about what kind of food is available in Bangladesh since we only know and familiar with Indian food. BD food is amazing -- different types of curries, with perfect taste, and very healthy.

Tanzir and Meghna , oh I didn't know that before, thanks for informing, I will post 3-4 pics per post from now on.

Thanks clearsky :) :) Hmm.. actually I use spoon and fork to eat rice but in Bangladesh I must follow the local culture, if not my trip will be meaningless. What you want to see when you visit a country ? Most people are only interested to see the tourist's hot-spots and the level of technology , but For me: to live and to experience daily life of a local family, to meet local people and to make new friendship, and.. FOOD ! FOOD !FOOD ! :D :eat: :eat:

I only went to some places around Dhaka, some places around Sylhet, and Cox's Bazar. Hopefully on my next trip - if time allows - I will visit some of my mother's extended family in northwestern BD. And if I ever visit Malaysia, I will be sure to take lots of pics of food and post them on your forum...then the torture can be repayed :D

me in Chapai Nawabganj

From Dhaka , me and Mobasher traveled 270 km NW to Chapai Nawabganj, a small town in Rajshahi division. Chapai is extremely popular for mango and mango trees are planted almost everywhere. May-June is the season, so I couldn't see any mangoes in December. I stayed with Mobasher's family whose house is right in front of River Mohanandes. The people in Chapai Nawabganj are extremely friendly and heart-warming. Especially Mobasher's neighbors, they came to the house that night and we had a long enjoyable chat up to midnight :) :) Many of them speak excellent English and we talked about so many issues. One thing I noticed among Bangladeshis ( and also Pakistanis ) is that they are damn smart and knowledgeable about almost everything. Ask them about any current issues the world face today, you'll find that they are extremely critical-minded and can debate very well, a starking contrast to people in Southeast or East Asia.

Growing up in an isolated rural area, Mobasher's 9 siblings are generally well-off and successful , because their parents emphasize a lot on education.

^^ Good stuff Skyprince. The second mosque in your pictures is the Mosque of Shah Nimatullah...built after the death of this "pir" in 1664, during the Mughal period. Shona Masjid was built earlier, in the Sultanate period, during rule of Alauddin Hossain Shah (r. 1493 - 1519).

The building next to the Mosque / Tomb of Shah Nimatullah was probably built to accomodate Shah Shuja, son of the emperor Shah Jahan (who built Taj Mahal), when he came to visit Shah Nimatullah. Shah Shuja was governor of Bengal during this time.

The remains of the main palace of the Gaur Sultans is across the border in West Bengal. The buildings themselves are in ruins but I have seen pictures of some wonderful mosaics which I hope are preserved.

Yeah, most likely...just an example of royal excess. Shah Shuja moved the capital from Dhaka to Rajmahal in West Bengal, where he lived during his tenure as governor of Bengal (by Bengal, I am referring to both Bangladesh and West Bengal). Rajmahal is not far from Gaur, so he didn't really have to travel much to visit with Shah Nimahtullah...but this was enough to warrant construction of the mansion. Nimatullah was thought of as a "pir" (kind of unofficial saint) and acted as spiritual advisor to Shah Shuja. Of course when the prince was gone this building, which had a good number of rooms plus a hammam (formal bath), no doubt found use from others.

I'm re-arranging this thread-- 3 or 4 pics/ post . Many of of my friends who view this thread were irritated because it took so long for pics to appear.

Don't worry about it Skyprince, we're certainly not irritated. In my case it's not so much about the time it takes...just the ease with which to scroll down a given page. But that's a minor concern so don't feel as though you have to rearrange everything.

He He He....

I would have identified you as one of my fellow Bangladeshis as well had you not mentioned explicitly your nationality in this forum.

You do look, act, sound like a Bangladeshi. :)

Hmm... I really don't know why.. even in Thailand everybody knows that I'm a foreigner and talk to me in English... but in BD.... :D :D Also BD food perfectly suits my stomach, and I like BD culture and traditions more than my own. Maybe I belong to Bangladesh in the previous life ? :naughty: :naughty:

Oh yes. I can't believe that Bangladesh's population is more than 150 million !? Yes there are lots of people, but not as much as what I expected... and in the countryside there are huge deserted fields everywhere ! BD seems like a country of 15 million, not 150. Traffic in Dhaka ( even in very central part of Dhaka ) is not that crowded. Well.. that's from what I saw...

^^ Some Malaysians do look a lot like Bangladeshis. I remember this Malaysian gentleman who came to one of our Bangladeshi get-togethers here in Columbia a few years ago, and people were telling him that he could pass for Bangladeshi.

And your reaction about the population is quite common. I have read comments by my fellow Americans and others on the net thinking that all of Bangladesh is as crowded as a market, then are surprised when they see open fields and such :)

Yes.. in fact before visiting BD I had the impresssion that Dhaka is such a huge city and packed with cars but I found the traffic in Dhaka is .. not that bad, at least cars and buses keep moving during rush-hr time. With rickshaw and CNG you can skip all traffic and get to the suburb ( like Gulshan, Uttara etc. ) very quickly. Residential area ( both planned and un-planned ) are relatively peaceful and quiet. Can't believe that the whole population of Russia forced into small piece of land measuring just 144,000 sq km.

Crossing the mighty Jamuna

I'm a frequent visitor of SSC Bangladesh forum, and I have seen plenty of Jamuna bridge photos there. I wonder why Bangladeshis regard Jamuna river and Jamuna bridge in particular as their " national icon ", but now I know why. Jamuna River splits Bangladesh into 2 big parts- East and West , and it is soooooo HUGE. The Bridge cross is more than 5km long ! There is a huge island in the middle of the river , but during the rainy season, the whole island submerge and fully covered by water !

Just before entering the bridge

Chittagong is Bangladesh's second largest city, and it's the main seaport. Population in metro area is around 3 million.

We had lunch at Sugar Bun restaurant in Chittagong. Food in Bangladesh is extremely cheap, except at Fast food outlets, where the price is exactly similar to Malaysia.

Thanks Tanzir and clearsky, the fact is that all of us ( me, Mr. Mobassher and Mr. Faruk ) are travel maniacs and we share this special interest of meeting local people and to travel off-road to many undiscovered places.

Hmm.. my next destination is unplanned yet.... but I can tell you that among all places I've been to, my favourites ( till now ) are Oman ( I know what happened to you clearsky in Muscat Airport :D ) , UAE, Bangladesh ( no flattery here ) , and Thailand. I've been to other continents but it turned out that Asia is the right place for me .

I believe anyone will have much better luck in KLIA. I've traveled to Malaysia many times with port entry visas, and they didnt ask a question. In fact, every time I had tough time with my countrymen (CAAB people) in ZIA describing why I was going to travel without a visa.

Well, other countries are really nice to visit but now I already feel BD is my 2nd home. I made lots of frens and everybody treats me as if one of their closest friends or family members. The human side-- that's what exactly I want to see when I visit any country-- not how developed or how sophisticated, how beautiful it is etc... Well, it doesn't mean the latter is "not important" but they r just less significant to me :P

@clearsky

That's very true ! :D There r many trip reports, but many of them r mere writing, with very few or no pictures. Oh. I found that BD ppl like to have their pics taken . Especially in Dhaka, I met several kids who asked their photos to be taken from my camera.... I took some but don't know how to send to them :P

In terms of nature-- there is no big difference between BD and Malasia-- I think BD has better coastline while MY has more mountains, but overall they're almost same. I believe that if infrastructure is upgraded further, and more Bangladeshis stand against the all-time negative potrayal of their country by foreign media ( just ban them ! ) , inshllah the time will come when BD brings in at least 10 million tourists a year :okay:

Hey Skyprince if you go back this year instead of next I'll pay 1% of your plane ticket :D

I don't know whether it has a name... actually one thing i spot in BD is that.. cities and natural attractions are not marked ..

For example.
Before going to BD I chatted with a BD lady and she told me alot abt her hometown which is " Sirajganj" and when i returned back she asked me whether i went to Sirajganj or not.. n I said no. But when i showed her picture of my bus trip from Chapai to dhaka she scream "hey u were there in Sirajganj !! u had ice-cream in a restaurant there while the bus is stopping just before crossing the Jamuna River "

What's the 1% !??? :D End of this year I can't take a leave cuz my Prof won't allow it ( i will graduate next Feb so must complete the experiment n thesis ) , but i will visit BD again next year . Trip to BD 7 months ago is definitely the best trip ever in my life ~

More pics to come... for now i must leave for college .

'Safeda' or 'Shofeda' is also called 'Ata' in Bangla. In Brazil it's called 'fruta-do-conde'. the English name is 'sugar apple'.

Found some info:

English name for "shofeda" is "sapodilla"....this is different from "ata" which is a "custard apple." A picture of some sapodillas is given below...the ones Bangladesh are rounder I think.

Okay -- I got my fruit all mixed up :)

I was thinking 'Shofeda' and got 'Sharifa'. Sharifa is another name for 'Ata' in Bangladesh.

Stop it guys, enough already! You're getting me depressed. Of all the things, I really miss these fruits from Bangladesh. Especially ata, amra, kul (boroi), kodbel, and mango. :(

Ha ha :lol::lol:

Towhid Bhai don't take it so hard.

Mexican and South American Grocery stores carry 'Atemoyas' and 'Cherimoyas' which are pretty close to our 'Ata'. I've seen them grow these in San Diego and close to the border towns in Mexico as well.

Just look in Mexican stores-- you'll find equivalents. Central America (Costa Rica) has very similar weather (and fruit) to that of Bangladesh.

You can buy seeds here (http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/atemoya.htm).

There is a street in my town called Sapodilla Avenue. I never suspected that sapodilla means shofeda. So this fruit research has left me a more informed citizen!

The tradewinds seed place also has seeds (http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/bael_fruit.htm) for 'Bael' (wood apple) trees. Click on the link to the top-right.

Bael (for those who don't know) is a fruit with very hard skin and delicious pulpy innards. Ah -- I remember the 'Bael Sharbat' through so many summers. Would go great with crushed ice as a smoothie.

Here (http://www.tropicalfruitandveg.co.uk/showpage.php?show=all&type=fruit&pn=1&pp=6)'s another place in the UK which has seeds for Boroi (Jujube) fruit.

Now 'kodbael' is a rarity. Maybe this place has it. I didn't look at it enough.

I think Durian is mostly limited to Malaysia and Indonesia. I haven't seen Durian in Bangladesh. I think Durian trees cannot survive the periodic cold spells we get (getting down to 10 or 12 degrees Celsius at times in January).

I'd be curious to find out tips on how to eat it without getting the 'pungent' smell all over yourself. Or is it not even considered a problem in Malaysia? Maybe foreigners do make a big deal about it anyway...

Skyprince is the master of food torture. And he does it on ALL his threads. So it's not surprising we're discussing food here.

Yeah Hilsha is a tough fish to de-bone. :) Defense mechanism for the fish to ensure its own survival.

But the flavor is great and as you have seen it is very popular in Bangladesh and West Bengal. In New York Bangladeshis get a local marine version of the Hilsha (shad) but the flavor is not all there like in Bangladesh. People say that you don't need oil to fry this fish. The fish oil contained is sufficient.

Talking about fish -- I think we need a nice large aquarium in Dhaka to show off some of our native species.

It's an odd thing, our country is floating on water mostly --but we have no aquarium in our capital.

Here's the Lankawi Underwater World (http://www.underwaterworldlangkawi.com.my/indexmenu.html) from Skyprince's home country :)

And here is their parent company (http://www.edenzil.com/tou_under.php). I think a collaboration would be interesting to build an aquarium in Dhaka. These people operate a nice aquarium from the reports I've heard. Maybe Skyprince can confirm.

I myself have visited the local 'Long Beach Aquarium' and 'San Diego Seaworld' which are quite nice themselves,

Personally I would prefer to see a National Aquarium in Chittagong...I think it would be more appropriate there. Although we could have one in both places, I would like to see a division of major cultural attractions between Dhaka and Chittagong so that both the main citieshave something unique to offer. I don't know however that the time is yet right for such a building. We don't have the money to build a state-of-the-art facility just yet, and locals have very limited idea of proper animal care.

You've got a point there.

CTG would indeed be better -- probably near the beach (in Patenga area). But CTG doesn't have the crowd pull like Dhaka.

...We don't have the money to build a state-of-the-art facility just yet, and locals have very limited idea of proper animal care.

I agree about the money and the poor care -- but we can take a phased approach and I think private-sector sponsorship through advertising is the way to go. Plus charging high access fees is okay.

If Concord can charge so much for their theme park -- then Aquariums can charge more. Aquariums are targeted usually at younger children (say toddlers to fifth graders, and their parents).

^^ My daydream would be this: for Dhaka, a world class zoo with a marine component, whereas in Chittagong the aquarium itself would take center stage. In place of a zoo, Chittagong could have safari park or something like that...the scenic setting with low hills would make this especially nice. As far as models go...the Shedd aquarium in Chicago is a good example of a compact yet comprehensive big city aquarium...though the building in which it is housed is not as inspiring as some more modern structures. I used to live in Charleston, SC which has good example of a smaller, more modern aquarium...something which might be an option if we are unable to build a facility on the scale of Shedd just yet.

@ Manbil- Hmm i was only able to eat very lil of hilish and I cudn't even know the taste. It is not like sardine or Tuna in which u can eat their bones without causing any harm .
Lol I've never been to that aquarium but i visited one in Bangkok it was really shocking to see giant fish in the middle of the hustle and chaos of Thai capital . Setting up a giant aquarium in CTG will definitely be a great idea, I think the location shud be inside or rite next to Foys Lake.

Yeah Foy's Lake would be a very good location for Freshwater fish aquarium.

If you wanted marine fish on a larger scale you have to have it located next to the ocean shore to get access to salt water. The one in Langkawi is near the coast and so are all the Sea-water Aquariums in the U.S. West Coast (Long Beach Aquarium Of Pacific (http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/) in Long Beach and Monterey Bay Aquarium (http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/efc/exhibits.asp) in Monterey (Pebble Beach area south of San Francisco).
Long Beach has a huge 142,000-gallon, three-story high underwater kelp-forest exhibit that has to be seen to be believed. It has about a 100 large 200 pound pacific groupers behind a four inch thick glass wall that goes up about thirty feet.
