There are also several buildings under construction or approved in Trondheim. Lerkendal Tower, a 75m tall office and hotel building was sadly rejected in late 2003, but three other high-rise buildings is under development.

This is a 14 floor tall residential buildings which is suggestied on topp of a shopping center with 20 stores. The tower has been approved several times, but has not recived its final approval yeat.

The skyline isn't that good, but the city itself looks nice, and the copper spire of the church (cathedral?) looks very nice on the skyline.
By the way, what's the population of Trondheim? :)

No skyline ofc, except the cathedral. This would be a sleepy town evrywhere else, but we're a small country, so here it's the third largest metropolis ;) It's actually quite lively, not least since it's a university town. It's also pretty.

But skyline
...uhm.....eh....well...
At least we can all agree it doesn't contain any badly designed scrapers :) So I guess it's 3,5/10 ;)

Trondheim downtown does not have a skyline because of quite strict building regulations, which only restricts new houses to 3-4 floors, sometimes less. This policy is supported overwhelmingly by the population, most people want the policy to be even stricter to preserve some of the historic athmosphere of the city with the cathedral as the dominant building. Outside downtown, though, the restrictions are more lax. Personally, I love the sky lines of the world cities of the world, but half-hearted, messy attempts like in Stavanger or particularly Oslo (where I live) I do not find particularly attractive. In my view, Bergen, Ålesund and Trondheim are the bestlooking cities in Norway, but Tromsø and a few other cities have moer spectacular surroundings!

A "few" more images from Trondheim.

Trondheim looks good, but doesnt have any skyline.
only Oslo and Stavanger have some small skylines for theyr size in Norway, but Trondheim and Bergen are still goodlooking towns.

Trondheim is Norways 4 largest urban area after Oslo, Bergen and stavanger.

You shouldn't be from Stavanger, should you :)

No offense, but Stavanger does not have a skyline either, and Oslo (my home) only barely has one. Not that I care, but if the Stavanger thread is correct, the tallest building in Stavanger is 65 m, in which case Trondheim has two buildings, the Nidaros catedral at 98 m and Tyholt tower at 124 m, which both are significantly taller. Trondheim also has many buildings in the 14-storey range. However, personally I think most cities, particularly in Norway, will do better without a large scale development of highrises.

BTW: Trondheim is a city, not an "urban area".

i said for theyr size.
stavanger has a cluster of "highrises" while Trondheim has a large cathedral and a tv-tower like a mini version of the ones in toronto, moscow, berlin ect( how high is the Ullandhaug tv-tower in Stavanger compared?).
though Trondheim has some 14 story blocks of flats, Stavanger has blocks of flats up to 18 floors and a hotel with 21.
i argree an that most Norwegian towns ( i guess only Oslo can consider itself a small city), would be raped by central highrices, thus the forus area outside stavanger could benefit by building highrices though its lacking space and is filled with large 2 floor buildings and is located in a flat envirement that could take buildings up to 30 floors.

soon Stavanger will be a "city" containg Sandnes, sola and randeberg like Trondheim and Bergen expanded in the 60`s and 70`s.
Trondheim as well as Bergen contains a much larger area than the actual cityarea and therefore has a smaller urban population than it actually is.

But still Trondheim, Bergen and Stavanger have maintained their original charm (in a larger scale) compared to oslo wich has had alot of bad developments from the 60`s and through the 80`s.
Oslo still has some nice areas but is far behind both Stockholm and Copenhagen when it comes to identety and cosmopolitan feel.
thus beeing having the same population as the three towns put together.
hopefully they wont demolish more of central Oslo`s soul in the future like enerhaugen, aker brygge and nedre grønland.

but since this tread is about Trondheim i must admit that it is a cozy and charming little town in the outskirts of Europe ;-)

and to awnser your question , i am not from Stavanger (have lived there, live in Copenhagen now.

Ullandhaug tv-tower is so ugly it can't be compared to Tyholtårnet! ;)

I guess it can be compared to Tryvannstårnet in Oslo though. Stavangers skyline is more visible (due to Stavanger skyline's location) than Trondheims skyline (Heimdal skyline: 4 high-rise buildings, 12, 13, 16 and 17 floors tall, both (Tr.Heim and Stav.) very miniature), so its worthless comparing the two against eachother! Stavanger's 21 floor hotel is quite far from the skyline as well! But Stavanger do have the biggest high-rise potensial area in Norway, Forus. I have high hopes for that area if everything goes as it looks like today!

Also forgot to mention Valentinlyst skyline in Trondheim, 7 high-rises with the newly added 47m tall Horisont which is all completed next month. :)
