It's a nice tower, I like it. Of course it won't be a revolution, but if the construction is of quality, it is the kind of little touch that can help getting a more "21st century" image to the district. :)

It's really similar to Dominique Perrault's projet for the Tour Phare.

On this map, the AGF Athena may be demolished and rebuilt in the near future. and why are the Manhattan Tower and the Descartes tower planning renovations?

there are rumours about it .
IBM will leave Descartes next year , and the tower will be empty and so ready to a massive renovation or destruction .

Manhattan has rumours about projects of renovation with adding some storeys on it (100 => 150m)

What are your sources for Athena ? I think it's a place for a proposed project for Signal.

^^Sorry, Descartes is too young for a destruction. Descartes is only 20 years old and has 40 floors. Whatever that project is, it needs to be cancelled. descartes is fine the way it is. It needs to find a new tenant.

Robert A. M. Stern to design green office tower at La Defense, Paris
The French insurance company, Aviva, announced today that it has selected Robert A.M. Stern Architects to design a new environmentally responsible office tower at La Defense outside of Paris. The 35-storey, 45,000 square meter building dubbed Tour Carpe Diem aspires to be “an important step forward in the evolution of La Defense toward pedestrian-friendly urbanism and environmentally responsible architecture”. When complete, the building will connect the raised esplanade - the “dalle” that continues the axis of the Champs-Elysees- and the urban fabric of the city of Courbevoie to the north.

Tour Carpe Diem will significantly exceed French regulations for environmentally responsible development. The building will have a triple glazed curtain wall with integrated sunshades that respond to the solar orientation of each façade and innovative grilles that provide natural ventilation to reduce air conditioning loads. Additional sustainable design strategies include solar water heating, a heat recovery system and high performance lighting.

Stern bested Jacques Ferrier Architect (Paris) and Foster + Partners (London) in a three-way competition. SRA Architects of Chatillon, France, will serve as associate architect for the project.

Tour Carpe Diem is one of the last project of "La Defense revival 2015" and is the first to be constructed .

Building permits are deposited and construction is to begin in February 2010. Currently , demolition of the current low rise is ongoing.

The foundation stone was to be laid today by the Ecology minister Jean-Louis Borloo but the Tour Carpe Diem's inauguration finally had to be postponed owing to the pension reform.

Piling is drawing to a close now, construction should be starting shortly. You can see that bulldozers are finishing to model the ground as well.

Nice. I like the open upper part, somehow like a giant balcony. Will there be some sort of observation platform, a garden, bar/café up there? Would be really an amazing bonus for the tower.

Actually I think things are pretty well arranged there. Traffic and pedestrians are mostly situated at different levels. The esplanade (if I use the right term) is only accessible by foot, which gives it a releatively quiet atmosphere. Motorized vehicles, metro etc. are situated underneath and around it, same for parking spots. As far as I can judge it's definately not a mess. So must be the pictures. :)

You're right Marc. When the tower starts to get its distinctive silhouette & its first glazing panels, people will be following the construction with of lot more attention I guess. Actually I think that it's already starting to be very interesting (with the pouring of the mighty columns among others).

As you're far from Paris, I'll try my best to update this thread regurlarly for you & our comrades (at least once a week).

Regarding the street planning Zapor (& to complement Trademarc's explanations), just know indeed that La Défense is built on a slab, therefore there's an important gap between the buildings & the traffic lanes. Furthermore, there are many works going on, not only constructions of new towers but also the Boulevard Circulaire planning; which represent the biggest investment from the EPADESA (organization running La Défense), aimed to make the traffic easier in terms of connections and access. Its goal also is to create an urban unity with the surroundings & to develop shops, wide pavements (pedestrians) & cycling lanes. There are already 2 new towers under construction (Carpe Diem & Majunga), D2 is about to start as the existing building (VERITAS) is almost totally demolished, the Tour Eqho (former Descartes, opposite Carpe Diem tower) is being entirely renovated both externally/internally & a huge structure (next to D2) is being constructed to allow the storage of equipment & machines for D2 Tower(171m) & AIR2 Tower (202m) whose works are going to start very soon with the demolition of the Aurore Tower (future AIR2 site). So, given it all, I won't call the street planning 'messy' either...

It seems that the cladding on thsi doesn't match the renders....

I was confirmed yesterday that the ugly light blue panels were well & truly covered in plastic films. The EPADESA principal private secretary & communications director Dominique Boré http://assets01.businessimmo.com/system/datas/6199/portrait/88573-boredominique2-1.jpg?, said to me that the final color will actually be 'Bleu Outremer', which corresponds to this:

Merci Jex ... I posted it onto my Facebook wall, a phone album specially created for such and for all my friends to see.

I love that tall building next to it a lot too. The density of La Defence is getting intens once this one and the other towers are completed turning the area into (if not already) a more fun place to be/go/be across Paris. I tend to stay in hotels close to La Defence myself each time I visit Paris in order to enjoy the skyline, the only one of North American flaire and density and can't wait for the days that at least one or two 60+ something is constructed there either.

A city shouldn't necessarily build Supertalls in order to be eye catching or become glamorous. In most North American (USA and Canada also Japan's Tokyo or Australian cities), the way these towers are located close or with each other, creating sections or cross points where one can stand and look up or look at from afar does distinguish the characteristics of these cities adding to the glamour of visiting them.

Although I like many of the new supertalls or skyscrapers being built or already there across China or UAE as to give a few examples, yet the way the city's and these financial districts are designed or the locations of each tower on the spot and map, is something I hate to look at and eyes "messy" or like I call it so "mish mashy" :)

I love the Shard project in London, but the way London's City is now redesigning itself is not really making it look that fun to me and had the feeling as if sooner or later we may look at something so "Dubai-ish or Shanghai-like" in London, UK.

This is why I am so glad to see that La Defence is doing exactly the right thing. Only adding these beautiful towers, that perhaps are not that tall, to a place at junctions and around a square like grand plaza to give it that North American feel and vibe an area as such requires to possess and to impress.

All I wish to see, hopefully someday, is a 65+ tower and one or two more towers of around 75 as to make the picture complete. Eiffel Tower is far away anyway and Paris's LD can easily have such impressive skyline.

La Defense could be a lot more impressive indeed, especially with the addition of taller buildings, I do agree with you. Hopefully, it will be the case if PHARE tower, Hermitage Plaza & GENERALI are built.

Building very tall towers in France is very difficult, even in La Défense...the nimbies, associations & some political parties currently try their best to make them fail via heaps of appeals made possible owing to stupid regulations that enable those people to delay the projects for months/years.

That's what's happening with HERMITAGE PLAZA whose works should have started last summer, but the remaining people living in LES DAMIERS (residences to be destoyed to make room for HP) appealed because they refuse to go despite numerous relocation proposals...Iskenderov (russian promoter is boiling...) Not sure that HP will come true given the economic downturn+ change of President (if Sarkozy isn't reelected next May).

For PHARE, same...several appeals and a judiciary procedure which, if it was to go all the way, could delay the project up to 4 or 5 years...it's very frustrating as it happens all the time with those damned nimbies...they have way to much power thanks to the french laws...

Having said that, PHARE's preliminary works should have started late 2011 but now, the mayor of Courbevoie (who had always backed the project so far), has changed his mind a bit (political manoeuvre as he wants his inhabitants to reelect him). Unibail has submitted 3 proposals regarding a passerelle (cf PHARE thread for full story), but that Mayor (Jacques Kossowski) is still not satisfied, so, time wastage goes on...

GENERALI has been abandoned last year by the italian company, but they're trying to sell the project to another investor. To date, there's no 'touch' but negociations continue with around 20 investors. I'm optimistic about this tower because if it's taken over, work will start at once as all appeals had been previously cleared.

A lovely hotel project (HOTEL CITY VIEW), that we all thought was dead, is said to have found a german investor lately, therefore, work could begin early february.

Tour AIR² (next to D2 tower), is to start mid 2012 with the destruction of the current tower 'Aurore'.

Amazing! Simply Dazzling ... I truly hope and wish that all these new additions will be constructed given with no doubt, it will make Paris's La Defence an example of how a financial/business district of a modern city should look like and be "designed" and be a trendsetter for whoever that aims to a harmonious city in perfect line with both old and new, distancing the "wanna-be" architects and architecture and only embrace the beautiful power of true design with that of multi-functionality that by itself leads to perfection.

And something else I notice and am glad to notice that: unlike many buildings out there that are or will be cladded with boring dull bland tasteless Blue/Green cheap glass, most of these French creations are going to have a character and be covered with materials that will distinguish them from anything else around them and in a way they will be given a unique character. Splendid.

To me, London is also very beautiful, but density-wise it lacks that what La Defence offers. In London you have to really turn your head 180degrees to see the highrises and spotted in two or three small pockets you see the Docklands/Canary Wharf with One Canada Center in the middle standing out and in the City with Vertigo Tower/Swiss RE and now the Shard on south banks of the river Theems. It would have been much better if the Londeners had planned the financial district better after WWII and had decided to do it the Parisien way. I love to look up and around in London as there is something for any taste to enjoy and behold, but when in Paris, those who love classic renaissance design have their own parts to look at and enjoy, those who love Gothic can do the same as well as those who like Modern and high rise can simply look up and behold La Defence. It is not so spread around that you won't notice it, it is there, it is easily to spot and to enjoy.

It is quite challenging to be building this skyscraper so close to those other towers.

Very interesting project! Without trying to hard to be '' look at me, i want to be the center of the attention'', it is a discreet design, but a great one nevertheless! More projects should be like this; not every skyscraper needs to be a landmark, but more of a background tower for the landmark tower. I hate these skylines that have tons of towers trying to be the icon.

Oh btw, that building being depicted below is really ugly and I know where it is located, but if you google the pictures of the Bank of Canada headquarters in Toronto, you will get my point better. The only reason this looks ok is because it belongs to a time when gold cladding was the norm. If an architect was using gold glass now they would most likely have stunted taste and create a 1980s pastiche thinking it was what people wanted....

sure ... but let's not forget that Gold is now sooooooo astronomically expensive that they can't even afford it.

Who knows, if Gold price makes a freefall, that era revive again. :D

Maastoren in Rotterdam (184m)

From wikipedia, Maastoren is 165m :nuts: so what is the exact height of this building ? It's a nice tower btw :cheers:.
(I know it's out of topic but I just wanted to know)

Maastoren is already constructed and finished. Looks good but not that impressive.

The Old building up infront is the former main headquarters of the famous "Holland-America" cruise lines that still to this day do operate worldwide. But the main building these days is elsewhere. Supposedly, this Old building functions as a Hotel/Event venue location and offers a nice 360 view over Rotterdam and its skyline that is getting better and will be more fun to look at by 2020. :)

It's amazing how dense that area will be. They will really need to do something about the ground layout as it's very poor compared to other areas of La Défense.

I really like the render, but for some reason the pictures of the construction make it seem as if its being pulled from the inside... I know that's the visual effect they are aiming for, but, it looks better in the render

Shard in London opened today and this one is going to be open sometime sooner or later too and looks absolutely stunning and lovely. A treat to the eye for sure :)

Wait for Paris to have constructed Les Hermitages towers and then we shall see who got the best modern skyline in all of Europe!

(well off course Moscow, Warsaw and Madrid are trying their best, but non of them can beat Paris due to 1. the city itself, 2. the Seine, 3. Eiffel Tower, 4. La FRANCE itself! ) :)

You know what LD does lack and I hope they 'd build one?

A skyscraper with a spire (no antennae) like those of Philly or Chrysler building or Charlotte, NC etc.

I 100% agree with you Charlotte, I've always wanted a Garibaldi (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/70/Torre_Hines_Cesar_Pelli_Milano_Porta_Nuova_Garibaldi_Grattacielo.png) like tower for La Défense, with its massive & lovely spire... the tower looks awesome & makes the milanese skyline really interesting I reckon.

thanks ! it must remain the equivalent of seven levels to the top. how will they continue? with concrete or with a metal structure? there will be an opening on both sides. only outer walls must be built. can you explain jex ? thanks

A fire took place on July 20th...luckily there was a fire brigade next to Carpe Diem' site & they intervened very quickly, only a few algecos got burnt...

what la defence needs is proper skyscrapers (at least 240m), not this kind of highrises. can't wait to see 2x supertalls being built in this cbd.

This is my favourite U/C project in La Defence, for now.

'In person' Carpe Diem really impressed me. That's definitely an amazing tower :).
