Monrovia, Liberia (PANA) - A UN Chieftain Friday extolled Nigeria's role in glob al peacekeeping, saying "without Nigeria's contribution, peace would have been d i fficult to achieve in Liberia".

Mr. Jordan Ryan, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DRS G) at the UN Mission in Liberia, poured the encomiums when medals were presented here to the Nigerian contingent to the UN mission in Liberia.

According to him, "you (Nigerians) have added a human touch to global peacekeepi ng. I salute Nigeria and the Nigerian people for keeping faith in the cause of peace."

He paid tribute to all Nigerian soldiers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace all over the world, especially in the West African region, stating that

as Nigeria celebrates its Armed Force Remembrance Day Tuesday, the prayers of th e world would go out to the repose of their souls.

He said all Nigerians must hold their heads high as they have become a stabilizi ng force in the sub-region.

Speaking at the occasion, the Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Luka Yusuf, said that henceforth, all personnel of the Army must conduct themselves in acco r dance with all the rules, regulations and conventions respecting the human right s of the citizens and other nationals they come in contact with.

Gen. Yusuf said that the era of fights between Nigeria Army soldiers and other m ilitary and para-military services was over as every officer would publicly be held responsible for his or her actions.

Gen Yusuf enjoined nigerian soldiers to "make sure that your actions both at hom e and at peacekeeping operations are accounted for.

"No matter how grievous the situation might be, don't bring problem to yourself by reacting without control. You must be able to defend every one of your action s . You are liable for all of your action.

About 2,000 Nigeria members of the UNMIL contingent were presented with medals f or their participation in the peacekeeping efforts.

Nigerian is currently participating in eight peacekeeping operations in differen t parts of the world.

I travel quite a bit to west Africa and i have come to hear of the work that Nigerian military is doing in helping to make the region a safe place. They have even lost men in the troubled Darfur region. Big ups to the mighty green and white.
