In the US you have free agents and college recruiting. Locker rooms have to be luxurious and amenity laden. A plain locker room would be considered high school like.

Texas A&M University

should also add that football(American) is very locker room centered for players. Coaches and players pretty much live in these places during the season. Bigtime "bunker mentality" in football(American). You'd better be comfortable.

Rumour has it that the referees changing rooms provided by the Juventus Club of Turin was actually a 5 star hotel suite with women, gifts and other luxuries thrown in to help the black and whites win championship after championship in suspicious circumstances.

This all changed after Juventus was busted for 'influencing matches and officials' a few years ago. Well, I would not exactly be surprised if it still goes on judging by Juventus' latest results.

What is odd, is the ownership of Juventus were never dragged over the coals, only the lackey's were vanquished.

They're great for soccer, but it simply wouldn't work for other sports where one spends more time in the locker room, or simply has more equipment needs. They remind me of what we'd see in a visitors locker room that are built to get in and get out. I'm guessing their dressing rooms at their training facilities are more akin to what you're seeing for the US dressing rooms.

You guys are really gonna hate Cooley Pavillion at UT. Definitely rivals our football locker room

Ya, in football, all of the post game interviews are conducted in the locker room. So it is one of the single most important rooms in the building. It has to sell the teams image as much as the team and stadium do. And also its all about making the players feel relaxed. THose European ones look like the dressing room i had in middle school, our varsity high school locker room was better and fancier than any of those in Europe u showed.

Well rantanamo's and most of your argumention is very sensible and I hadn't actually taken into account the different equipment needs e.g. for American Football and NHL etc., or even further the need for space to conduct postgame interviews.

Still, can't help as a style concious (*badum-tisch*) European to smirk a bit when I see two Texans advocate incredibly tacky locker rooms :D

If you have ever seen a post game interview for a football game, you would realize why these locker rooms have to be so big and "attractive" Those guys are huge! Most of them are black...(most black players like to be pampered in style) and then you have to fit the coaching stff, trainers, press, owner, public relations, friends of player, special guest, etc and etc

but European players do not act like American players (most of them). Luxury is not the most important in European sport, but luxury in US is the most important (that is the image we get)

Other example is rugby vs american football...
It's even funny to compare it :dunno:
-European players play without protection on real grass with simple dressing rooms
American Football players play with protection on an artificial grass and their dressing rooms look like night clubs what landDK said before me.

Not to mention rules in both of games:
There's radio conection between coach and players in American football
In rugby that is not the case
In rugby there isn't so much interruptions of the game as in Am football....

And this one sport isn't the only difference between EU and American sport

The Arsenal dressing room would be used for a very short period of time in comparison to the Gridiron ones. Players only use them on matchdays. They get in there an hour before and are out an hour after. Virtually all of the coaching, training and contact with the media is elsewhere.
Arsenal's Training Centre covers an area of 143 acres, and has a dedicated press briefing building where the players and staff fulfil their media requirements. It consists of 10 interview rooms and a press conference room, seating up to 100 people.
How many players do those Gridiron dressing rooms cater for?

Scba

Yeah, you also have to remember just how much they're used in American sports.

In baseball, you play 80 home games EACH YEAR. I'm surprised they haven't started incorporating the players hotel right into the clubhouse. Football, though you only have up to 10 home games, you have 50 guys playing, the entire staff, and spending a ton of time underneath during practices, training, film study, etc.

But still, no one needs a room as lavish as the Cowboys' new one...

The Helmet radios cut of after the play clock is down the 15 seconds, and most teams dont even use it.

Also rugby is a scrum sport filled with dog piles and group shoves. Football is one on one contact with receivers jumping 10 feet in the air to get a ball then being speared by a 250 pound strong safety before they hit the ground.

Not dogging on Rugby, I played in a a league for 3 years when i live in Dallas but the 2 sports are to different to realy compare.

53 player roster, 10 man coaching staff, trainers, personal trainers, national and local media (dallas cowboys always draw national media)

Also pro football locker rooms are only used game day as well. The Cowboys practice facility is 10 miles north in Valley Ranch, not as nice as what the new stadium will be because the practice facility is all about business.

Maybe soccer players in Croatia aren't spoiled and arrogant because the Croatian league is not glamorous but to suggest that soccer players in England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France are anything but arrogant is laughable. You should know it better than anyone else. After losing to Croatia a couple of months ago, all the English players kept on coming up with one excuse or another, with Michael Owen being the biggest tosser I've ever seen in my life.

Also, all these generalizations are getting extremely annoying. "Oh, America needs nightclubs-esque changing rooms because it is blah blah blah"....you don't hear college football fans ragging on European fans for sitting under roofed stands "Oh, Euro fans needs roofed stands because they are blah blah blah". Honestly, some people on here need to grow the eff up.

That is a pretty poor reason to call everyone arrogant. First of all, there is team play in the NBA. Just because they aren't passing the ball around 20 times in 24 seconds doesn't mean they are looking to get points themselves. Keeping possession at certain times is better because if you can't penetrate or find someone open, passing the ball around is a waste of effort and an unwarranted risk, considering the chances of the ball being stolen.

Also, its not like everyone is doing whatever that they feel like doing. The coach or the PG calls a play, and the other four guys on the court comply. If the play requires the centre to hold onto the ball and try to score down-low on the block, that is what he is going to do.

NBA= individualism
Euroleague= Team play

i love the NBA, go PHX, but the NBA is so individual its all able one on one hence it not allowing zone defense till the 90's and having the defensive 3 second rule. Also you can see the NBA's individualism ideas in its court dimensions. Its a longer court and bigger 3 point line all to create more room for the highfliers and stars to do their thing without being shutdown by a team defense, also the key is smaller to enable the bigs to get closer without incurring the offensive 3 second rule therefore being able to throw down more dunks and why does the NBA do this? Because all this action means more money and more money is what Americans want.

On the football subject I think England are a bunch of cry babies, firstly I am Croatian so I was supporting a Croatia and England qualification but after I read in some English news paper online that this expert doesn’t think England should need to go into qualifiers I was compelled to start to support Russia therefore I am overjoyed that England didn’t get into the comp because maybe they’ll wake u to their own arrogance for once. Go Liverpool.

Soccer players are not over payed! idn why people always think that. The average annual salary in 2003-04 for players of the english premier league, which is the one of the best and most commercialized of soccer leagues was 1.3million USD. MLS players cant earn more than like 80 000 USD a year! so i dont think anyone can say that is bad.

I think the idea behind American football dressing rooms is to accommodate 53 extremely large players, their gear, the staff, the coaches, equipment, and related accoutrement. So. It's not about American grandiosity. It's a logistics issue for this sport.

Nice dressing rooms.

There are plenty of golf clubs about with similarly well appointed 'locker rooms' as we call it.

The gridiron teams rooms are very impressive, but they have many more players and equipment to cart around.

The best locker room I've been in would have to be the Palm Meadows Golf Club in Queensland. Complete with masseur, large spa and one way glass you can view the course.

Ya, in football, all of the post game interviews are conducted in the locker room.

Interesting difference here. In European sports the locker room is totally off limit for the press.

I'm obsessing over this locker room thing...

At least in this picture you can see the eraser board coaches use to discuss strategy with their team... Hence the need for space.

That is interesting. In America, its a bad thing if the Media isnt allowed to be in there.

I've always noticed how hands off the media is with sports in Europe. Look at F1 vs NASCAR. The media is constantly in the face of NASCAR drivers. They'll do interviews while they are in the car and on the grid and even during the race. You could tell Juan Pablo Montoya was like WTF? at first, but I think he's picked it up the fact that this will sell products for him and his sponsors and later in the season seemed to be more relaxed with it. If a driver shook the media off the way they do in F1, here in the states, you'd hear reporters complaining about it for a week on sports radio, then the player would be villified(like Barry Bonds), opening him up for possible ramifications like Hall of Fame voting in the future.

After pro football games, the media storms in. Players have become so used to it, they just go ahead and shower and dress and get out of there as soon as they can. Men and women reporters. I remember a local report where a player walked by naked in the background, totally exposed. It caused a big stir about women being in the locker room. Something you will notice though is that teams more and more have their own media now. For example, locally, the Cowboys do their own web media, they hire one of the local radio stations to be their exclusive station and contract with a local affiliate to officially report their content. The Cowboys give these bodies official interviews and the players they want representing them. If you notice, these reporters never go into the locker room, but rather set up outside. The rest of the local and national media are the ones who crowd the locker rooms.

For pretty much respect reasons(some of the younger players are considered, kids) media don't storm locker rooms. Instead they get interviews before and after players hit the locker rooms. Most major colleges simply won't let these people in and control who they let represent the University. This is pretty much Unconstitutional except for the possibility of minors being in the nude in there.

Do you know if their are any plans to rebuild MSG?
Also I wanted to respond to the person who put up the pic's of the canadiens dressing room. Make sure it isn't the mock up they have in the hall of fame in Toronto, because that's what it looks like.

Oh, all this sweet luxury in the lockerrooms.. That's just something for pussies!!!
Real men don't need that!!! Tough guys, they play here in these kind of locker rooms:

http://wdr.de/mediathek/html/regional/2008/05/02/lokac_01.xml;jsessionid=82EDDFBC429DDB199B9CA712DF1AC627.mediathek4
(Just click on the video, it's in german and talks about necesasary little renovations for this current (the final) season of our old stadium the Tivoli, before the new Tivoli is ready, at start of the coming season.)
These locker rooms are 81 years old and had just a few minor renovations so far in all these years.
Lots of really famous soccerstars had to change here in these rooms (even Franz Beckenbauer). In the season 2006/07, all of the first Bundesliga teams, like Bayern Munich, Bremen, Schalke, Dortmund... all the big ones. :)
And several big players changed here in these rooms when they used to play for our club in an earlier time of their carreer. The most popular fairly recent player is Thorsten Frings.)

Pah, who needs leather seats and all that useless stuff, when you can play high class professional soccer in the Bundesliga even against Championleague teams with some good old traditional lockerrooms like these???

(And by the way, we beat Bayern München the last 3 times, they visited us here.)

But I hear he doesn't play very much and he's thinking of retirement and coming back to SplitIt gets a little of topic, but I just have to answer to that with this one post. So if you're a reader that doesn't care about Alemannia Aachen and Vukovic, just skip it:

It somehow doesn't really mean overly much in our current team that he doesn't allways play. We currently have a lot of competition on basically each and every position and there are not that many players who really play all the time. And our defense player Olajengbesi hapens to be one of them, so the second inner defense player next to him basically has three main candidates, one of them Vukovic and then there's even a fourth one, who can and sometimes does also play there. Vukovic will have his "comeback" (even though this term is way to drastic) soon, I'm absolutely sure. Most of the payers in our Team didn't need many chances to get to play often again. And the Trainer is experimenting and changing the Team around a bit because we're not as successfull as expected in the last few matches, so other players had a chance and used it well, which probably is a little difficult for Vukovic of course and likely to be the main reason he didn't play all too much in the last few games. But he'll play more again, really soon, I'm absolutely sure! This kind of tough competition is currently going on with a lot of positions in our team not just where Vukovic plays.

Delmat

Says who?

How much about the game do you know?

These rooms are used for meeting spaces, large men, interviews with players...You need a lot of room for a lot of people. Despite what you might think, this is in fact VERY normal.

And you dont have to say "soccer for the Americans", we arent the only ones who call it that. We get it, we call it a different name. You aren't being clever by pointing it out.
