^^ If you go to the Krispy Kreme website it says they are expanding into Queensland in the first half of 2008 with 3 new stores planned for Brisbane, Brisbane Adelaide St and Spring Hill. It makes no mention of Rockhampton at all. I was going to say I doubt they'd open a store there before Brisbane which has a far bigger population.

^^ Sean there are loads of Aldi supermarkets in Oz. Over 150 operating in NSW, ACT, Victoria and Queensland to be exact. No doubt they are looking to open more stores in Qld. You really need to check these things before posting statements that are misinformed.

cool_dude69
January 21st, 2008, 02:25 PM
All the stores that are listed all have places in the Stockland Rockhampton Redevelopment. Brisbane is opening KK stores in 2008, but dont forget Stockland Rockhampton wont be finished to late 2009, so that is a 18 months to expand stores in QLD. Aldi will be replacing Supa IGA, when the IGA ceases operations this year, as according to WIN News Rockhampton.

As for Nando's and Oporto, Rocky has been looking for franchisees for Oporto and Nando's stores since mid 2007, to go into one of the new shopping complexes that was build last year, but they have decided to open in the new food court in the Kmart Plaza section of Stockies after the redevelopment.

^^Yeah i thought there were way more than 3.

From the Aldi website

While ALDI has been operating internationally for over 50 years, the first Australian store opened its doors in January 2001. Now with over 150 stores successfully operating across New South Wales, ACT, Queensland and Victoria, it's clear that Australian shoppers have adopted the company's philosophy of great value for all consumers.

That is the pedestrian/car bridge and outdoor food court seating area that faces over Moores Creek. Apparently as part of the redevelopment Stockies is gonna rejuvinate the creek and add it into the redevelopment. It sucks that Stockland hasn't released a whole bunch of renders yet, but if i get time to i will get photos of the ones in Kmart Plaza, there is about 3 on the wall outside of Coles, along with an electical screen that shows renders, has floorplans of the overall centre and information ie stores that will be inc into the redevelopment

There is 10 Oporto stores and 23 Nando's stores in QLD. As i said before, these stores won't be opening to September 2009, so that is still 18 months to expand new stores in QLD.

Stockland backs Sunday Trading

The Stockland shopping group says it would support Sunday trading if it was permitted by law.

Marketing manager Celina Urquhart says there were 38,000 shoppers at the Gladstone and Rockhampton centres on the two Sundays open for trade in December.

She says the figures show Sunday trading on a more permanent basis would be successful, if allowed.

"The figures that we've had over the Christmas period support that fact, but it's really difficult to say whether the laws would be changed," she said.

"It also depends on retailers if they would choose to trade those hours as well. We're certainly in a position where we'd like to be able to provide the service, but it's also difficult to provide it when the law doesn't allow you to."

SHOPPING HEAVEN: An artist's impression above shows the massive scale of the $86 million Kmart and Stockland project, which is tipped to "significantly increase the ranges of goods and services within the region"
Kmart development unveiled
19-2-2008

This is a first look at what will undoubtedly be the biggest shopping centre in Central Queensland.

Details of the proposed redevelopment of the Kmart shopping complex and Stockland Rockhampton were unveiled in Rockhampton City Council committee papers yesterday.

The artist’s impression above shows the massive scale of the $86 million project, which is tipped to “significantly increase the ranges of goods and services within the region”.

The development will see the Kmart site merge with Stockland Rockhampton via a closed walkway over Moores Creek.

The council has granted conditional preliminary approval for building works to be carried out, but the complex is expected to be completed for an opening in 2009.

The demolition of areas of the old Kmart shopping centre is continuing.

According to the council papers, the proposal will “service the higher order shopping ceeds of the residents of Rockhampton and within a regional sense by providing for discount department stores, super-markets and specialty shops”.

“Therefore the proposed use will preserve and reinforce the hierarchy of the North Rockhampton centre’s commercial area”.

Stockland appointed local Rockhampton builder JM Kelly in October 2007 to undertake preliminary works for the expansion of Stockland Rockhampton Shopping Centre, which will incorporate Kmart Plaza.

The $86 million proposed redevelopment which will include a new K-Mart Discount Department Store, Kmart Auto, a new larger Coles Supermarket and 65 new specialty stores will make Stockland Rockhampton the largest shopping centre between Maroochydore and Cairns.

The 56,889 sq m centre could include more than 3000 car parking spaces (both centres), with the developers asking for additional car parking during the application process.

STOCKLAND KMART PLAZA REDEVELOPMENT

The new proposal launched to the Rocky CC to include underground parking has been approved, and will feature 463 carparks, bringing the total to 3600+ parking spaces. Also to maximise space in the shopping centre, the loading docks for Kmart and Coles are also underground.

Another 10 new shops have been included, make it 75 new shops in total, which will make it approx 230 shops.

We're not your babysitters!
July 01, 2008

THE most popular meeting spot for teenagers in Rockhampton is suddenly off limits to most of them.

Stockland Rockhampton is cracking down on unruly youths and has warned children under 15 must now be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian.

The notice Stockland handed out to teenagers on Thursday also informed them that groups of four or more people were not allowed to congregate or loiter at the centre.

The move has come under fire from one Rockhampton father, who says his daughter and her friends are the victims of the actions of a small minority of out-of-control teens.

The concerned dad said his daughter, who had just turned 15, was handed a Condition of Entry leaflet on Thursday night and told by a Stockland representative the centre was no longer their "babysitter".

The father said his daughter had been told the entry conditions would be strictly enforced during the school holidays.

"I can understand them wanting to step in because the problem is getting so bad," said the North Rockhampton man, who has not been identified for family reasons.

"I would say while 10% of the kids are causing the problems, the other 90% now have to suffer the consequences."

His daughter said she enjoyed going to the shops with her friends, but there were problems.

"There would be three or four fights every Thursday night," she said.

She said on Thursday a security guard informed her small group that those under 15 had to have an adult or legal guardian with them.

Those aged 16 and 17 had to show ID when asked.

The policy was news to Rockhampton friends Alice Bell, 16, and Thomas Woodfield, 14, yesterday as they made their way into the centre.

Thomas said he thought the ruling was unfair. He said those who hadn't done anything wrong shouldn't be punished.

Alice said she wasn't allowed to go to the centre on a Thursday night.

However, she said on holidays and other days she enjoyed going to the shops and the nearby cinema.

A spokeswoman for Stockland Rockhampton yesterday said the safety and security of all customers, employees and retailers was of paramount importance.

"In light of this, Stockland Rockhampton is currently trialling new Conditions of Entry in response to requests from the community for a safer and more enjoyable shopping experience at the centre," she said.

"Stockland Rockhampton will continue to work with retailers, customers and the broader community to ensure that the centre remains a convenient and safe shopping destination for the residents of Rockhampton," the spokeswoman said.

Stockland Rockhampton’s construction works for its $93 million redevelopment are well underway with local builder JM Kelly undertaking the works.

Stockland has a successful history with JM Kelly, having worked with the builder on the Red Hill Homemaker Centre in 2004 (formerly a Stockland property), followed by the preliminary works in preparation for the redevelopment of Stockland Rockhampton in October 2007.

Stockland’s Regional Manager, Development, James Cousins said:

“JM Kelly were the most appropriate builder for the job given their local expertise and knowledge, not to mention their long affiliation with the centre, having built the original centre in 1985.”

JM Kelly commenced work on the main project in May 2008, preparing the site for the enclosed retail bridge which will link Stockland Rockhampton with Kmart and Coles.

The redeveloped centre will see the addition of Kmart, Coles and approximately 67 specialty stores all on one level. Additional undercover car parking will also be created with the redevelopment.

The redevelopment is expected to open in stages with final completion anticipated for early/mid 2010.

Take a look at the 2 minute presentation supplied on the Stockland website link below

http://www.stockland.com.au/NR/rdonlyres/9B89DFDE-A526-4C66-98D3-C0F66AB2CA99/0/Rockhampton_low.wmv

I so can't wait for this to be complete, its looks really good through the virtual walk. I wonder if Stockland plans to revamp the current Stockland and intergrate the colour and flooring schemes. also the exterior the new part loos really modern whilst the current part is pretty bland considering

This redevelopment will hurt Rockhampton because its too big and there other shopping centres may drop their customers income. You would need a population around 250,000+ in regional area (size of Wollongong City and either Northern Rivers region). Rockhampton region is only 110,000 and its still small for it.

Sorry thats my opinion. Should have wait for another 20 years.

Gertzy
July 4th, 2008, 08:32 PM
^^ But all the other shopping centres in Rockhampton just consist of a supermarket and about 10 other stores, so this being the only shopping centre of its size/future size, then its pretty much warranted.

Okay Rocky, thats your choice. ;)

cool_dude69
July 5th, 2008, 06:06 AM
Rockhampton City/Regional Council has been working with Stockland over the last 5 years planning this development, so there is no way this is gonna hurt Rocky or any of our other shopping centres, the next size shopping centre from this one has only 36 specialties and 2 majors.

If Yeppoon (20,000 population) has been able to sustain two shopping centres, one with 35 specialties, Woolies and Big W, and another with 30 specialties, Coles, and a future redevelopment to include Target and Kmart, Rocky can definatley handle it.

Stockland stance slammed
July 05, 2008

STOCKLAND Rockhampton has come under fire from leading civil liberties spokesman, Terry O'Gorman, for its policy restricting young teens from entering the popular shopping centre.

Mr O'Gorman, president of the Australian Council for Civil Liberties, said he believed the new policy was discriminatory towards young people.

He said the question had to be asked as to why Stockland had reverted to such heavy-handed tactics and moved away from the sensible policies utilised at all other shopping centres.

Earlier this week, The Morning Bulletin reported Stockland was trialling new Conditions of Entry which included all children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian.

The centre would also not allow loitering or congregating in groups of four or more.

"The onus is on Stockland to demonstrate why the long-standing practices used elsewhere are not working in relation to this particular shopping centre," Mr O'Gorman said.

"As Stockland adopts a strict and discriminatory practice against young people, I urge them to have a re-think."

He said while the company might view the centre as private property, the reality was big shopping centres were seen as public places.

The issue has generated an emotive response from many Rockhampton people.

Rockhampton mum Tracey Sorensen said it was unfair to target all under-15s because a minority had caused trouble.

"As a parent of a 13-year-old daughter, I find Stockland's conditions of entry over the top," Tracey said.

"My daughter and her friends love to go shopping. They enjoy each other's company and seek each others' opinions on their purchases.

"They also combine the shopping with lunch and a movie at the cinema.

"Young people also have an income to spend and Stockland might find its retail profits dip if they impose these rules.

"Sure young children, say under-10s, should be with an adult for safety reasons."

She said Stockland's management had to deal with the troublemakers and leave the other teens alone to spend their money without harassment or restrictions.

Perhaps to where it was first going to open? The Metro. I've also recently heard that red rooster and Dominoes is heading to Stockland, not sure how true that is but could be a possibility with stand alone buildings outside the centre.
This redevelopment will hurt Rockhampton because its too big and there other shopping centres may drop their customers income. You would need a population around 250,000+ in regional area (size of Wollongong City and either Northern Rivers region). Rockhampton region is only 110,000 and its still small for it.
Go away, stay in the Northern River forum. Or altleast stop telling what is right and wrong, you don't live in the Central Queensland like some people. Go bug European forums for a while.

They had a front plage article in the Rockhampton and Fitzroy News about 2 weeks ago, just info on the development etc, and JM Kelly reckon's that "people will be walking across the retail bridge by the end of 2008", so its seems that the retail bridge will be complete by the end of the year.

On another note it looks like alot of stores are trying to make a quick buck before they get booted. I read that Country Living, Pulp Sandwich Bar and the Key cutting place outside Big W are for sale. Looks like there are going to be alot retail changes within the current centre. Looks quite clean in there now too, with repainting floor to ceiling. It's coming along quite nicely

Stockland Security

A local shopping centre will tonight become the first to officially place bans on groups of youths.

Ironically during Youth Week, the Rockhampton Regional Mayor has supported Stockland's call to ban young people loitering in their centre.

Stockland are gonna lose money for this, as most of their income would come from young people.

Yeh Reject shop is great. Its sorta odd though. looks smaller then it should be, you think back to IGA it was alot further back begind the camera store, this store isn't I assume there stock room is out the back which means where did that extra space go, I might be wrong here but it just seems it. Powerhouse musnt be that far away alot of banging and stuff this arvo

I dont think they've yet to confirm Canelands at 66,000Sqm. I know Cairns Cental is 52,000sqm, Stockland Townsville currently 56,000sqm and once developed looking at well over 80,000sqm. These are certain, you sure your information is correct?

Full article in today's Morning Bulletin. Stockland is still tightlipped about future stores but the Bulletin has done some of its own research and came up with the following

Locked In:
McDonalds - Not an express like stated above, will be a stand alone building outside K-Mart in the carpark
Yd.
Roger David
Tarocash
Th Coffee Club
The Body Shop
Valley Girl

Denied:

Pending:
Michael's Pattiserie - Most likely will be included, I know the owner of the Yeppoon store and they have the rights to the Stockland store also

I thought it was supposed to be the biggest centre between Maroochydore & Townsville, not Cairns?

It has always been speculated as the biggest centre between the SS Coast and Cairns.

Well after the first stage is open this year there will be 58 or so like stated above, after that they will be going on with the second stage which should see some of the mini majors and remainding stores going in, the reason for the second stage is because they have to demolish the existing K-mart plaza and then build on that site. this should bring the total to 75 or so, after completion we're looking at close to 220+ stores

No I think it will be around the 60.000 m2 mark but I'm unsure whether that factors in the stand alone buildings that will surround the centre. Has canelands actually been approved yet?

Or designed, its only word of mouth that it'll be 67500 sqm, I haven't read anywhere that backs up the claims. Seems strange, Only the 3rd McDonalds in Rockhamtpon, There are at least 7 in Townsville I can think of, off the top of my head.
