Hotel, ski resort and residential building in sea resort city Jurmala, some 30 km from Riga. Enormous and luxurious project with ~250 million EUR planned investments. Just got approval from Jurmala city council. One of the most notorious projects in Latvia now, comparable to National Library. It is recognized by prestige architecture magazine «A+U: Architecture and Urbanism» - "Baltic Dune" is in 41st place in their greatest future world project list. In MIPIM 2007 exhibition in Cannes it was included in the top 10 list of the most interesting projects in the world. Developers says it could be built in 5 years time.
Project info:
Building Name: Baltic Dune
Height: 25fl | 85m

The DUNE – unique multi-functional skiing centre in Eastern Europe
Eco-architecture
Eco-tourism
Eco-development
These are the guiding principles of the project philosophy
The architecture of the building is part of the sand landscapes along the Bay of Riga – their ecology and geology. It is also based upon a deep symbiosis with the environment in which it finds itself, both physical and human. Eco-tourism and eco-development refer to activities and facilities that are sensitive and appropriate to the specific nature and ecology of this particular location, and suggest an approach to building which has a minimum impact on the local habitat. The use of renewable materials, energies and other resources is critical in this approach.
Here is a cool video from news story (in latvian, but with english visualization titles):

Vecais Sakarnis January 17th, 2008, 10:18 PM There is only one thing which I dislike in this project - Russians has bought the rights to duplicate it and in their resort city Sochi it will probably be built faster than in Jurmala. Then all people will think that we copy them not vice versa.
Insane alex January 17th, 2008, 10:49 PM Cool! Another indoor ski resort! I like! And sweet design!
Jarmo K January 17th, 2008, 10:57 PM lots of information, yes, but... who's the ARCHITECT?! (:
Vecais Sakarnis January 17th, 2008, 11:01 PM Architects: "S333 Architecture+Urbanism", UK
Jarmo K January 18th, 2008, 11:17 AM ok, thanks! this will surely be their most spectacular project ever!
the overall shape of this project kinda reminds me of some of the work by paul andreu, eg the casino in macau and the technology + science center in chengdu. although its texture is not that smooth as in the works of the french architect...
and a big hooray for jurmala
Mikrobs January 18th, 2008, 11:55 AM Why not use correct spelling for Jūrmala? Scandinavians are using their funny alphabet (Å,Ø,Ö) in this section, why can't we? Just my2c
safta20 January 18th, 2008, 12:17 PM We don't have to travel all the way to Dubai to see something crazy like this:okay:
Geborgenheit January 18th, 2008, 01:40 PM Too much. This project is too much for Jūrmala.
Nõgesh January 18th, 2008, 01:48 PM Would be interesting to see it in real life :)
Rebasepoiss January 18th, 2008, 04:07 PM Holy crap! This is really Dubai-ish.
LatvianGG January 18th, 2008, 07:14 PM Yes, this baby will rock indeed.. :) Brilliant thing. Although I think the location could be better.
Triceratops January 18th, 2008, 07:51 PM No, the location is very good indeed. It will be located in the western part of Jurmala, in Vaivari, on the degraded territory. So it wouldn't make any problems in the centre of the town (how it is usually). Besides, it will provide 1500 new workplaces for the inhabitantants of Jurmala.
Þróndeimr January 18th, 2008, 11:58 PM Very Dubaish. Is it needed in Jūrmala?
I would rather do something different since this isn't Dubai, though this is cool and will sell good.
ristov January 19th, 2008, 09:02 AM hope it will be built :)
but, vecais, i can't understand, why they sold those rights?
Muthai January 19th, 2008, 10:59 AM ^^ When you order a design from an architect he owns the rights. At leat in Sweden, but I think it's the same everywhere. If you want the design for your self then you have to pay for that to. I guess it's the architect who sold the design to the russians.
LV994-CB January 19th, 2008, 11:18 AM It looks so futuristic. I hope it gets built.

Jūrmala used to be great resort zone which attracted a lot of foreign tourists in past. Baltic Dune if built will serve as great tourist magnet which might attract a lot of tourists in future.
Vecais Sakarnis January 19th, 2008, 05:01 PM ^^ Yes, and don't forget about Russians' money in Jurmala, many Russian millionaires as well as latvian riches have houses in Jurmala, they use this resort city as one of their destination places when it comes to vacation. They are very solvable public, and I think they are target audience alongside foreign tourists for "Baltic Dune" developers.
As regards to selling rights, I don't know this story in details, they told this fact in that news report. Not only in Sochi, but probably also in Seattle and in other places in the world this could be built - from one unique project it changes into "chain" of such buildings.

That would be fucked up.
ristov January 19th, 2008, 08:44 PM type project :P
Nightsky January 23rd, 2008, 12:09 AM Looks very special, like it could be built on a tropical island.
Nomels March 25th, 2008, 05:22 PM bakS-Z4RKdY]
Latvietis March 26th, 2008, 02:40 PM i dont get it.. why people should be against the Dune..
we have some 300 or more km of coastline.. why do they bother with sometyhings thats the size of a football field.. or 3..
they should be thankful that something like this is being built there, it will be something to be proud of later..
Nomels March 26th, 2008, 03:14 PM They are total NIMBY's
RipleyLV March 1st, 2009, 06:34 PM Hello! :D
Are there any news?
Triceratops March 1st, 2009, 08:20 PM I doubt it.. you know, in such times almost everything is on hold, especially such monsterous projects..
andrejt March 29th, 2009, 10:49 PM This project looks really innovative, but nowadays its impossible to realize it. I want to see it being developed, let's hope by 2015 it will be ready.
Gatis October 28th, 2009, 04:29 PM Just reported by BNS - first 50 mio EUR attracted for realisation of this project. Investor - local businessman who just sold his car sales business in Russia.
Still 2/3rds of the project costs to be covered and it can start rocking...

SEAfan October 29th, 2009, 09:38 AM I looked at the video Nomels linked us up to in March a year ago. I gather from your recent posts that this project is still sort of "in the air" at least? :)

Investor himself says that he has no idea to invest in this building.
Now even I start to believe that this project is a cheat.
SEAfan October 29th, 2009, 11:54 AM Too bad! :( But thanks for the update, Gati.
I just wanted to try to figure out what's going on here.
RipleyLV October 29th, 2009, 01:08 PM Now renewed 2 pics.

Triceratops October 29th, 2009, 04:01 PM Well, at least the project has been refreshed in our's memory! Anyway, great to see the visualizations of Dubai-like project in European scales!

Vērienīgākā krāpšanas afēra Latvijā?
Triceratops November 12th, 2009, 04:13 PM ^ That's something extraordinary! Who could even think such case could have been performed in Jurmala!?
Gatis November 12th, 2009, 04:21 PM Otherwise in Jurmala everything is happening in a crystal clear honest way, sure. :D
Micrav April 15th, 2010, 12:35 AM In french speaking countries, we say "we don't catch flys with vinegar". two different understandings: 1. you need to use and/or do the right thing to attract the right target 2. If you want to cheat people, you will not show him a crapy house, you will show him the most beautiful project so he gives you trust and money before he runs away... Meaning, you don't catch stupid people with stupid things... I feel I belong to the stupid category
