Guardians of Auckland

All this talk about The NZ Herald has got me thinking .... why don't we start our own little "newspaper" ... it can be read on-line and we can cover things like -

* The worst buildings in Auckland (whereby we expose bad property managers etc)
* The best buildings / new shops / new restaurants in Auckland
* The glamorous side of Auckland
* Public transport disasters and public transport wonders
* The same for private transport

I will notify all the local media of our website, including ACC & ARC
We can include photographs and even do a 2DAY photo thread
We can focus on all the positive issues and expose the negative issues so that there is an improvement
Each of us at SSC have different interests and we can have our own little department.

I am particularly interested in style/glamour etc.
Mr KF loves the photographic side of things
Ben can write about private transport issues and make suggestions
Kane loves the public transport side of things
MA loves public places like squares, public art etc.
Smarty likes .... mmmmm ... all of the above :)

And I am sure that we can make some sort of impact. Who knows it may grow into a bigger publication. We can also be a voice against the nimby's who have NZ Herald to speak for them.

I am being very, very serious. If you are interested let me know and we can all meet, get together and discuss it (our house will be fine or we can meet on neutral ground). Ben, it will be gr8 if you can help us with details regarding a web page ... you have done it all before and it is very successful ...

Let me know what you think ... there is a lot to discuss but I think that we are onto something here.

Personally I think a newspaper to help circumvent the nonsensical drivel eminating from the Herald would be a great idea.

Perhaps an eventual written version to complement the website (vice versa)... If the Herald can do it, why can't we?? Of course, that will require some investment. I think it can become a very strong voice with enough determination.

Hey if I was up there I would help you guys out. Great idea. My knowledge of Auckland is not good. I was on Queen Street and wanted to go the harbour. It took a little while to realise i was now walking uphill and was probably going in the wrong direction.

I think its a great idea, but also a normal newspaper too, give the herald some competition during the week

Sounds like a group blog would be the easiest way to get things started on this project. I think if we all advertised it in our signatures, then we'd end up with quite a few viewers. I imagine around 5 people offering insights into their particular area of expertise, with hopefully a more positive focus (but not ending up like the propaganda spouted by city coucnils) on the city of Auckland than we get in mainstream media. Opinionated, but fair at the same time. With that number of people, individually one wouldn't have to post more than 1-2 times a week, although I imagine that more often would still be sweet as.
