We also need giant shopping malls and shopping streets, Orchid road s'pore, chappel street , Melbourne, Hill arcade H'kong..........it will also attract tourists and increase their spending habits! i hope someone will implement this eventually. saraprobe February 23rd, 2007, 05:38 AM Sri Lanka’s potential and capabilities in design, raw material and manufacture of apparel for discerning international labels is to be showcased in Colombo on Saturday by Brandix the fully-integrated total solutions provider in the local apparel industry. The occasion will be ‘Fashion Statement 2007,’ the mega fashion show graced by top international designers, models and the reigning Miss World at Water’s Edge. Exclusive Brandix designs in three apparel categories will be modelled by international and local models in one of the segments of the show. According to Mihiri de Silva, Head of Design at Brandix Intimate Apparel Ltd., these designs have been selected from the road show conducted by the Brandix Group in New York in October for top international clients. The Brandix design collection which would be modelled in Sri Lanka for the first time will comprise of Hoodies, Yoga pants, Kamis and T-shirts in the Loungewear category and Bras, Briefs, Chemises and Wraps in the Lingerie and Sleepwear category, she said. “International buyers are often surprised and very impressed by the design and development capabilities that Brandix has demonstrated at our bi-annual road shows and this event will be an eye opener for local audiences too,” Ms. de Silva added. A fully-integrated total solutions provider in the apparel sector, the Brandix Group comprises the holding company Brandix Lanka Limited and 14 Strategic Business Units that produce casual bottoms, intimate and active wear, textiles, knitted fabrics, sewing and embroidery thread, accessories and hangers, and offer wet processing and finishing and fabric printing. Amal March 7th, 2007, 10:09 AM Oh okay, thought she looked familiar. saraprobe March 11th, 2007, 12:20 PM Sri Lanka's US$ 2.5 billion clothing industry finally seems poised to make the transition from tailoring to building brands through the country’s biggest garments’ group, MAS Holdings.http://i19.tinypic.com/496n8qx.jpg Ajay Amalean, Managing Director of MAS Corporate Solutions, told The Sunday Times FT the group intends to launch its own signature lingerie label in India in August, perfectly timed to capitalize on India 's Diwali season, which is characterized by high retail spending. Amalean added, "India is a growing market and the Indian woman deserves better… Our basic philosophy is to cater to customers' requirements." And what about the Sri Lankan woman? “The same label will be launched locally during October/ November this year, in time for the Christmas shopping spree,” Amalean said adding that some marketing elements would be in place by May. MAS was, until recently, in talks with Vanina Vesperini of France to buy her brand outright. However, Amalean disclosed that MAS has shelved that plan since, finding it not feasible. "We have decided against buying the brand", he disclosed, "but will use her skills as and when we need designs." MAS Holdings, the largest supplier to Victoria 's Secret, has a presence in eight countries. http://www.sundaytimes.lk/070311/FinancialTimes/ft305.html phil.froelich March 11th, 2007, 03:36 PM MAS is really taking the textile industry forward... sjinadasa March 12th, 2007, 03:21 AM Yeah, Now if everyone was like MAS Amal March 12th, 2007, 03:35 AM Yeah, Now if everyone was like MAS I think ODEL should have expanded to India a while ago. Wonder why they haven't. http://www.odel.lk/images/otara_3.jpg At first impression, Otara Gunawardena, doesn’t come across as a retail mogul. The pioneering Sri Lankan businesswoman exhibits a certain reserved nature; she’s almost painfully shy. And much like Odel, the brand she created and took to soaring heights, there is a classy and understated elegance about her. We first meet at a reception hosted by the Sri Lankan High Commission to mark the beginning of the recently concluded Refreshingly Sri Lanka festival. She’s a surprise invitee but her presence among some of Sri Lanka’s most high profile personalities is no surprise at all. Everything about her is unassuming yet elegant. The Baglioni Hotel is one of several hotels in London’s stylish Kensington district that seem to have fewer than 30 rooms but chauffer their guests around in brand new Maybach’s and serve tea in the finest China. The architecture of the hotel is traditional and non-descript but the inside is anything but; much like Odel’s flagship store, and Otara’s pride and joy, in Colombo’s answer to Kensington; “Colombo 07”. Don’t expect Otara to be staying at the Park Lane Hilton or the like. Wee joints like the Baglioni hold secrets for Otara that average Joes and Janes like us don’t see. “London is one my favourite places because unlike a lot of booming cities London has a certain old world charm. It has forged ahead and leads the world in fashion and style, but with that charm intact. That is the kind of combination that I wanted to capture with our flagship store in Colombo.” For the uninitiated, the Odel store at no. 05 Alexandra Road, Colombo 7 is more than a store. Set inside a massive former colonial residence, the store offers everything men’s and women’s wear to home furnishings and a dedicated section for “nature and souvenirs”. Spanning several well-adorned floors, the store is cutting edge retail therapy for Colombo’s discerningly fashionable and even a tourist attraction. While retailers such as House of Fashion offer cheap but relatively high quality clothing, Odel offers a Lifestyle. Otara says, “I have always strived to position the Odel store in much the same way as Harrods of London or C.K. Tangs in Singapore. One doesn’t go to such outlets with a specific aim of buying a particular thing. You go there for an experience. And you know that you will always get products that are unique, and are of extremely high quality”. Regarding Odel… We are making a lot of changes in the store. Fairly big changes, new concepts like the sari bar; that section has been completely revamped. There are three or four other sections that we have identified that we can give a whole new look. We are also opening a few other stores in the outskirts of Colombo not under Odel but another brand. We are also planning on expanding the store, have a new wing along with the parking lot. That is a very big project on its own. http://www.nation.lk/2007/04/15/youth5.htm http://i15.tinypic.com/33omjvk.jpg phil.froelich April 17th, 2007, 06:26 PM Yeah, this is the expansion that was discussed in another thread, i think construction is already underway for the new wing... ive seen it myself... saraprobe April 18th, 2007, 08:05 AM That is just the expansion at exciting ODEL isn’t it? Sri Lanka's tourism board hand-picked the 22-year-old, who was one of the crowd's favourites in the Miss Universe 2006 pageant, to be its spokeswoman in India. She is also working on a feature film and furthering her modelling career while living in Mumbai, home to Bollywood, the world's largest film industry. "It really is very exciting," said Jackie, who returned to Bahrain to visit family and for the Grand Prix. "When I was in Los Angeles (for the Miss Universe pageant) last year, everyone I met in Hollywood led me to Bollywood! "Along with the modelling and acting contract in India, the Sri Lankan tourism board also asked me to be its cultural ambassador. "In that role, I will be touring India promoting Sri Lanka in a positive way. "It is something I truly believe in, especially after a year's reign as Miss Sri Lanka." Last week Jackie crowned the new Miss Sri Lanka, Aruni Rajapakse, in a ceremony held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. "I really think Aruni was a great choice. She is a really lovely woman, very poised and dignified," she said. But handing over her crown came with mixed emotions. "I was happy and excited for Aruni and I knew I was starting another chapter in my life. But at the same time my reign was such an amazing experience that I couldn't help but think, 'Can I extend it a bit longer?'," said Jackie. "After the Miss Universe pageant, I went back to Sri Lanka in September last year and fulfilled duties that concentrated a lot on society and creating more awareness. "I worked with children's charities, as well as helped increase awareness on animal rights." But before returning to Sri Lanka, Jackie was honoured with a major award in Los Angeles in August last year. The Friends of the South Asian American Communities presented her with the Kalpana Chawla Award as the Outstanding Woman of the Year. While in the US, several newspapers featured Jackie and described her as "worldly", having been born in Bahrain, educated in Australia and worked as a television anchor in Sri Lanka. The future holds many great possibilities for Jackie. "I'm in a great place right now," she said. "India is booming and it is a great platform to launch a career. "For me, it was so much easier going to India and use it as a launching pad and maybe, who knows, go into Hollywood later?" Jackie is one of three children of long-time Bahrain residents Elroy and Kim Fernandez. Mr Fernandez owns Elroy Events Management and Mrs Fernandez is a senior advertising sales executive at Al Hilal Publishing and Marketing Group. Jackie took part in several major fashion shows in Bahrain, including the Jewellery Arabia and Visual Image shows, before moving to Sri Lanka three years ago. She also won several local beauty pageants and her face has graced many a billboard. http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/Story.asp?Article=179404&Sn=BNEW&IssueID=30028 Intoxication May 4th, 2007, 10:54 AM I do like this thread  saraprobe July 1st, 2007, 03:17 AM http://i18.tinypic.com/6g1uwc8.jpg:) phil.froelich July 1st, 2007, 11:12 AM Some nice clothes there... sjinadasa July 1st, 2007, 07:18 PM Hotness.. We need some more photos of girl... i mean fashion shows :) Yep, but they aren't publishing on regular basis! saraprobe July 10th, 2007, 11:33 PM July 10, 2007 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's DSI Samson footwear manufacturer is in talks with Reebok on making the brand's shoes locally, an official said. The Reebok brand is catching the consumer base in Sri Lanka and is moving among the people. DSI is already Reebok's sole partner in Sri Lanka and says they plan to move a step further into producing Reebok branded goods locally. “Three weeks back we held discussions with the Reebok officials in New Delhi, India and it has been very successful,” says Deputy General Manager-Marketing of DSI Samsons group Kaushalya Perera. Samples from the local factories will be sent to the Reebok labs in a month’s time and after receiving approval, the local company can start off their production. “We have three factories and we will be sending samples from all three. The best one will start producing,” Perera says. The factories will also be inspected before getting the green light from the global giant. “They are very keen to produce Reebok items locally due to the better reach it can bring to their products,” says Perera. The imported branded footwear is sold at a price above 8000 rupees which can be brought down to 5000 if local manufacturing is approved. “We have to make our pricing very competitive if we are going to produce it locally and that will also bring a better consumer base,” Perera said. He was speaking after Reebok opened their fifth and largest store in Sri Lanka at Dharmapala Mawatha Colombo 7 recently. DSI says with local production more showrooms can have Reebok products with better competitive pricing. At the moment DSI has 160 showrooms in the country and out of them only 25 have Reebok products. All Reebok apparel products and 60 to 70 percent of the footwear products are imported from India while the other 30 to 40 percent come from other countries. DSI believes that they are capable of producing quality products on par with India. “We might not be able to produce the products that need the highest technology but whatever India is doing we can do,” Perera says. “We can even send some styles of footwear to India.” Reebok said that the belief that consumers in developing countries are not interested in brands is not true. “I totally disagree with the fact that Third World countries are less interested in brands,” says Managing Director of Reebok India Subhinder Singh Prem. “We launched the new Paris trainer - a 200 US dollar shoe - just a week after we launched it in the Paris marathon.” http://www.lankabusinessonline.com/fullstory.php?newsID=677153555&no_view=1&SEARCH_TERM=17 saraprobe July 11th, 2007, 10:41 AM http://i10.tinypic.com/4lpx7br.jpg http://i19.tinypic.com/61v1ax0.jpg http://i7.tinypic.com/6gw0doz.jpg http://i18.tinypic.com/4trm044.jpghttp://i14.tinypic.com/4pb7880.jpghttp://i8.tinypic.com/4y4xrgk.jpg http://i16.tinypic.com/53u5v8i.jpg http://i10.tinypic.com/534kuwh.jpg http://i14.tinypic.com/61l8eid.jpg http://i14.tinypic.com/5x5empx.jpg http://i10.tinypic.com/6gbucft.jpg http://www.themodelnetwork.com:cheers: saraprobe July 12th, 2007, 02:09 PM http://i19.tinypic.com/4lnh651.jpg http://i19.tinypic.com/4uiy6me.jpg Accessory shopping enters a new dimension, as ODEL invites customers to experience the glamour and excitement of getting dressed up backstage before stepping out into the limelight. This innovative retail space provides women with what they truly need, so they can accessorize the simplest of outfits and stand out. This innovative and exciting concept will later be launched at many other locations around Colombo. There are also plans to eventually take this brand to international locations. The Model Shop is a school is geared for individuals who want to build up their own personality, to gain self-confidence and to build their own image. This applies to everyone whether they are corporate executives, aspiring models or an average person, giving them the opportunity to educate themselves and learn the finer points of grooming, hair care, body care and modeling techniques. A school of this nature will give Sri Lankas fashion industry a boost as well as giving those individuals an opportunity to bring out the best in themselves, and become a new you. The course consists of two segments with the first syllabus focusing on personality development with subjects such as body care with toning and exercise, diet, skin care, personal hygiene, nail care, fashion sense, accessories, make up, hairstyling techniques, etiquette among others. The focus is on the importance of taking care of ones self on a day-to-day basis. The second course will be an extension from course one with additional subjects such as photographic modeling, animation as well as catwalk modeling with poise, projection and attitude. The lectures will be conducted in both Sinhala and English. http://i19.tinypic.com/5z69nrm.gif The school also has plans of running a model bank offering the world of advertising and glamour as well as a choice of well-groomed and trained models that will be absorbed from the school. This offers models the opportunity to function through the school, maintaining updated portfolios as well as offering a very professional service. The fashion industry is always on the lookout for new faces and talent so we hope to be able to meet this demand. We have not restricted the age group, as we want to give all our prospective students the opportunity to learn and develop themselves. There isnt a school of this nature in Sri Lanka and having such a school will help promote better standards in the fashion industry. I hope that the students who enroll into this programme will graduate with flying colours as well as show enough talent and acumen to get ahead in this field and be absorbed into the fashion industry, Wong said. http://i10.tinypic.com/53ph3lt.gif Adding to this, Weeraratne said, There are a lot of young boys and girls who are fashion conscious, who like to enter the world of glamour, beauty and fashion. This school will create a platform for those who dream of entering the world of fashion, beauty and glamour, whether it be the catwalk or photography. The world of fashion, beauty and hair care has had a great impact on our country in the recent past, with men and women from all walks of life becoming more fashion conscious. It provides formal training for those who are have already entered the industry without having had the opportunity to do so. http://www.virakesari.lk/business/index.htm phil.froelich July 29th, 2007, 10:41 AM Nice project, do you think there are many models or people who want to become models in SL... saraprobe July 29th, 2007, 11:33 PM http://i9.tinypic.com/4zmnpz5.jpg Nadeeka Perera won the International Best Female Model 2007 in Spain yesterday. http://www.dailynews.lk/2007/07/30/news50.asp Here we go.......... saraprobe July 30th, 2007, 10:06 AM Nice project, do you think there are many models or people who want to become models in SL... This addition to the brand’s chain of stores follows its earlier expansion to Kohuwela last month, and highlights ODEL’s ability to grow and evolve into Sri Lanka’s most successful and iconic brand from its origins as a one-store operation. Ja-Ela, a town recognised for its noticeably rapid growth over the past couple of years has risen to become a fashion conscious suburban area. As one of Colombo’s most popular residential and commercial suburbs, Ja-ela boasts an impressively mature and up to date retail sector, and fits well into the brand’s plan to tap into emerging consumer markets. The new clothing store will be the brand’s second store located on the outskirts of Colombo, and the sixth for ODEL, and is a significant move by the retail brand as it ventures into new territories. The other stores are located currently at Alexandra Place, Majestic City, the Bandaranaiyake International Airport, and Dickman’s road. This major move for the brand is another part of its many plans identifying and expanding into new retail markets. Transactions on this site will occur through the use of a completely secure system, where customers will be able to purchase from the many items available online, making payments with their credit card. This service, provided and run by HSBC, is reputed to be a highly effective way of ensuring the security of online transactions. This impressive new offering from ODEL is a major milestone for the retail giant, as it now breaks the restrictions imposed by physical boundaries, with the ability to cater to a wider market, moving from a local customer base to an international one as well. Products available will be broken down in to 6 different categories - Ladies, Mens, Children, Homeware, Gourmet Food and Souvenirs, and within these segments, consumers will find available, everything featured at the ODEL department store. Speaking at the launch of the revamped website, ODEL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Otara Gunewardena said it was imperative to overcome the limitations of a physical store to fully succeed as a big business today. She added, “This move is a highly exciting direction we are moving towards. The possibilities in cyberspace are infinite, and our shift to the online retail sector will serve to further increase the equity of our brand.” The move online is one in a series of expansions that are in store for the brand. Recently it added two more doors to its existing range of outlets with the opening of retail spaces in Kohuwela and Jaela. In 2008, the world's local bank, HSBC will be the title sponsor and the event will be called HSBC Colombo Fashion Week. Also for the first time this year, the organizers will be working closely with Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) the apex body of the industry, whose membership represents the Apparel manufacturers in Sri Lanka and the lifestyle brand ODEL. The Colombo Fashion Week will showcase established Sri Lankan designers, like Yolande Aluvihare, Sonali White, Darshi Keertisena, and Middle Finger along with four new Sri Lankan labels by young Sri Lanka designers. Along with the Sri Lankan designers, there will be three designers from India, one each from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Italy. "Key objective of this initiative is to uplift the Sri Lankan Fashion design industry by providing opportunities for new designers and bring about freshness in the industry. This can be achieved through regular interaction and exposure with important regional designers." Says Ajai Singh, organizer and founder of the Colombo Fashion Week. All invited designers are well respected and have had varying levels of international exposure including important fashion weeks. The young designers will therefore provide an interesting contrast by reflecting this growing aspiration for the creative to excel and provide an important opportunity to learn from others' experiences and start their own in the field. "With this international scope and recognition, the aim of the show is to strengthen the importance and sensitivity of fashion design to the apparel industry and the opportunities for successful fashion designers. With this rise in the creative fields all over the world, it should only alow for improved aspirations of young designers from all backgrounds in Sri Lanka with a realistic possibility of having a career in fashion design." adds Singh. Fashion weeks around the world are by far the most glamorous business meetings in the world. This is where designers showcase new designs, manufacturers get orders, and the media communicates and consequently form trends to consumers around the world all leading to demand. "For Colombo Fashion Week to become an important regional event, it is essential for the apparel manufactures to realise the benefits they can derive from such an event where international media has shown interest. This will also help the industry which is facing strong competition in the region to reflect a strong international image in the media. http://i4.tinypic.com/89joe9t.jpghttp://i14.tinypic.com/8esxovo.jpg Established Sri Lanka designers need to raise their game, target other markets and encourage younger designers to bloom and see the scope which can be." Says Singh The Colombo Fashion Week will be covered by international fashion media like Cosmopolitan, Vogue, Elle, and Femina as well as prominent local media. Colombo Fashion Week 2008 is an event aiming to promote serious fashion design not merely for entertainment value. It is the tireless dedication of the ODEL staff that has seen the brand emerge as a leader in the Sri Lankan retail sector, helping to expand the brand’s network with the opening of two new department stores in Kohuwela and Ja-Ela within the past year. Seven employees from the ODEL family were presented with certificates and awards at the ceremony by ODEL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Ms. Otara Gunewardene – and ODEL Chief Operating Officer (COO) – Mr. Arjuna Samaratunge, in recognition of their immense efforts over the past year. This special event has long been an annual event for the well renowned brand, which has over the years been committed to rewarding hard work and determination. However, making this year all that much more special, the awards were not limited solely to staff at the Alexandra Place department store. At this ceremony, all employees of ODEL were involved, with an employee from every outlet being recognised with an award. Furthermore, an additional “Retail Supervisor of the Year 2007” award was also presented. Speaking at the occasion, CEO – ODEL, Ms. Otara Gunewardene expressed how important it was to recognise those that have excelled in their work over the past year. She added, “Our expansion plans have come along way this year, with the opening of the Ja-ela and Kohuwela outlets, and for this I wish to sincerely thank each and every person who helped us to take ODEL to Colombo’s suburbs. I firmly believe that ODEL’s successes from our inception would not have been possible without this commitment from so many members within the ODEL family.” Walking away with the ‘Retail Employee of the Year 2007’ awards were Ms. Diana Sherin Del Silva from the Alexandra Place store, Mr Dinesh Edirisooriya from the Kohuwela store, Stella Maduwanthi from ODEL Ja Ela, Mr. Dhanushka Prasad from the outlet at the Bandaranaiyake International Air Port, Mr. S. Roshan Jayathunga from ODEL’s Majestic City branch, and Ms. Chathurika Sanjeewani from the ODEL Warehouse at Dickman’s road. Additionally, Mr. Amila Kuruppu from the Alexandra Place department store was presented with the ‘Retail Supervisor of the Year 2007’ award. On June 01, 60 items of lingerie, loungewear and casual wear designed by Brandix' creative team will be modelled as part of 'Colombo Vogue', a lifestyles weekend. The design collection put together for the show themed 'Free Spirit of Brandix' has an emphasis on eco friendliness, in keeping with the theme of Colombo Vogue, Mihiri de Silva, head of design at Brandix Intimate Apparel said in a statement. http://i28.tinypic.com/21j7qls.jpg "Some of the garments are made out of eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, bamboo fabric, 100 per cent cotton knits and linen, and illustrate the versatility and design capability of our designers," de Silva said. "We have also made some of the garments more catwalk-like to add more flavour to the show." Some of the new designs are based on designs presented by Brandix at recent buy meetings in the US and would represent the latest high street fashion trends in the west, she said. The designs will include dresses, yoga pants, knit tops, camis, chemises, bras and briefs, pants, shorts and skirts. "Design and development is currently one of the most important areas of focus in the global apparel market, and Brandix Lanka has invested substantially in developing local design capabilities to service the needs of key export markets," de Silva said. http://i27.tinypic.com/eqnm0x.jpg Brandix is the Platinum Sponsor of ‘Colombo Vogue lifestyles weekend organized by the Rotary Club of Colombo Regency. The "Work and Rock" segment comprises modern work-wear for the summertime. Garments made of comfortable and lightweight, yet classy and modern fabrics such as linen come under the "Relaxed Elegance" segment. Eveningwear and partywear made of vibrant, textured fabrics belong to the "Celebration - Night & Day" segment. http://i29.tinypic.com/2ihsfwi.jpg "Fouzul's new FH Studio Collection was very fresh, it was in line with international men's-wear trends, it was sharp, slick and finished beautifully. The petite Kerkoven, who won the Miss Sri Lanka title when she was just 17, was in town for a product launch today. “I want to make India my home as I believe there are better opportunities for a model here,” she said when asked about shifting base here. She also plans to enrol herself in a Hindi learning course. Currently based in Delhi, Kerkoven says her mother’s influence has been her support during her formative years. “My mother Rehana was also a model and today she is one of the oldest designers in Sri Lanka. And since fashion has been all around me as a child, I took to ramp for my mother’s designs at 14.” “I have always loved to occupy the ramp and the Miss World title gave me an unmatchable experience in my life,” says Kerkoven, who deeply bonded with Miss India Natasha Suri during the race for Miss World title. On her slim physique, Kerkoven claims she has been naturally thin since childhood. “I hate the fact that some people take pills to be slim. I would never recommend any girl to use such slimming techniques. One should follow a healthy diet and a proper regimen to be fit,” says Kerkoven, fond of all kind of music. A die heart Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan fan, Kerkoven says if given a chance, she would love to act in a Hindi movie, for she has grown up watching them. While speaking about the hectic schedules models have, making them vulnerable to alcohol and drugs, she said: “Everyone copes up with high stress in different manners. There, certainly, is a huge stress level involved in the glamour world though it may look like an easy profession. And those who cannot handle it can get into drugs. But one should be aware of one’s capabilities to be able to deal with stress.” expressindia (http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/Fashion-and-Bollywood-invite-Miss-Sri-Lanka-to-make-India-her-home/339735/) saraprobe July 25th, 2008, 03:54 AM Authorities should look for a permanent solution agreeable for both parties to settle the ongoing ethic problem. Too much of time had been wasted to bring about a solution for this burning problem and sooner the solution is found the happier the country would be. It’s a sheer shame to see the consequences we experienced due to the war including tourism. However people cannot stick right along only to concentrate on war. They have their own personal longings or liking which cannot be prevented or which should not be prevented. Fashion is one of those. http://i33.tinypic.com/30t3mon.jpg Pictures by Saliya Rupasinghe There is no age limit, gender differences and limitations for fashion and it’s evident that fashion culture in city is fast spreading across the rural. Unlike yesteryears children are becoming more fashion conscious today and kids at the ages of five decide what they should buy and wear. “My daughter is no exception and she does not allow me to select her dresses,” says the owner Sri Lanka’s prominent fashion store, Cotton Collection, Niloufer Anverally. She says that even the lasses in the rural areas want to be fashionable and are investing a fair share of their earnings seeking modern fashion. Men too are fast catching up. She says that women always look at a total change when it comes to fashion while men are very mindful to change. “While women go for flashy colors men prefer cooler colors,” she says. Having had her basic education at St. Bridget’s Convent she went for her higher studies to India. “The trend during that time was to go to Europe for higher studies. I too had this opportunity. However I preferred an Asian culture and India was a tailor made destination for me,” she said. Niloufer said that she obtained then passed out as an Economist Graduateship and today she has 15 years of experience in the garment industry. Cotton Collection is today one of Sri Lanka’s prominent fashion stores that compliment style and fashion. It concentrates on retailing ladies, gents and kids clothing. At present Cotton Collection takes the number two slot in the retail fashion market. Q: What made you decide to focus your career on the garments sector? While I was studying in India I saw the quality of handbags, shoes and other women’s attire which were not available in Sri Lanka. I saw a wide gap between the two countries and wanted to bridge this gap and that’s why I started Cotton Collection. Q: How was Cotton Collection created? Birth of Cotton Collection was a result of pure passion I had for fashion and style. It all began as a mere hobby, with a wholesaling operation in 1991. Since then, Cotton Collection opened the first store in Majestic City, which was of 300 square feet. Then I opened up our flagship store at Flower Road, and then opened fairly a large store in the new wing of the Majestic City. In order to strengthen our brand image Cotton Collection, we also very recently rent out a store in Colombo Hilton, which is presently undergoing a facelift in its interior decor to represent a chic elegant style in fashion. Q: After 17 years in operation how do you review your progress? Since our inception we have witnessed the growth of not only our brand, but also our business. From an initial staff of five, we now employ more than 90. In addition, we provide indirect employment to more than 500. Our products contain more than 750 different items, and a majority of them sourced locally and the rest imported. Birth of Cotton Collection was a result of pure passion I had for fashion and style. It all began as a mere hobby, with a wholesaling operation. We work with more than 300 suppliers, and about 40 factories. We also design our own brand products, under the COCO label. Apart from retail transaction we are also involved in garment industry on wholesale basis and export them to countries such as, Maldives, Jordan, India and UK. We strive to deliver clothing of highest quality, which represent the latest trends in fashion at an affordable price. Hence, we boost a fashion conscious loyal customer base, who are well tuned into international trends. Many of our customers are known to be the trend setter in fashion in Sri Lanka. We cater to the middle to high end clientele. The demand for our fashionable clothing at times supersedes the supply. At times our outlets are pouring with many customers. As a result we are pushed by the end user to expand and grow, in order to provide them a comfortable, memorable shopping experience. Q: What influence people have for fashion? Its mainly because of the newspapers and television and recently the internet. In addition people are traveling overseas more frequently and get opportunities to see new fashion creations which they bring back home. Q: Can you tell me about your financial movements? Admirably, over the last 17 years Cotton Collection has self financed itself without out any bank finances. Cotton Collection strongly believes in pumping its monies to strengthen the company and its people. As a result, it was successful in retaining key staff whilst attracting professionals to join their team. Q: What do you think is the success of the Indian economy? The Indian authorities took decisions at the right time and they were very concerned about every corner in the market. Q: How do you review the local tax structure? Its is huge. The big players have ways and means to avoid or cushion them. However for the SME sector like us it’s burden. The recently introduced one way traffic system and the no parking system is driving away the customers and the authorities should try to devise another way where both the entrepreneurs be happy while security issue too is being addressed. Q: How do you see the local infrastructure? Its is getting in to place but the speed is not at all that praiseworthy. I think the reason for it is that competent people are not heading the key decision making bodies. Q: Where would you like to spend your holidays? I love the beach and if it’s overseas I love the snow. The Modi group also plans to expand in to the south Asian region using the products manufactured in Sri Lanka under international standards. The 100 million rupee manufacturing plant will produce cosmetics that suit the Asian skin tones, Modi group chairman Umesh Modi told reporters. Customers in Asia are not comfortable with cosmetics and toiletries manufactured for western markets as the type of weather and skin tones do not match the products, Modi said. The factory in Sri Lanka has already done experiments and is in the process of manufacturing Revlon products to suit the weather patterns and the Asian skin color, he added. The Modi plant will be able to under cut imported cosmetics and toiletries which are classified as luxury items and heavily taxed. With the plant in Sri Lanka importing only raw material and packaging it will be able to produce cosmetics to international standards at a lower price than imports, Modi said. The plant will produce a range of cosmetics and toiletries with the Revlon and Street Wear brands being launched Tuesday. The products are aimed at the upper and mid market segments. "We see a huge potential in the market and we plan to introduce to Sri Lanka all the products that have been launched in India," Deepak Bhandari, marketing director, Modi Group said. Sri Lanka's cosmetics and toiletries market grew by 11 percent last year to 150 million dollars. Color cosmetics such as eye shadow, lipstick and nail enamel have grown 28 percent in 2007. Modi Revlon, a subsidiary of the Modi group, plans to recruit nearly 500 employees to its cosmetics plant which is situated in the capital. The other special treatment used is “Purista Antibacterial” finish which guarantees longer freshness and comfort. “Focuss ex” T-shirts are available throughout the Emerald dealer network islandwide, in an array of designs ranging from stripes to prints and pleasant shades of plains in fine Pique Polo’s for those preferring the classic look. Expressing his views on the new product launch, Manager, Marketing Operations, Emerald, M.T.M. Lukman, said, “The introduction of any product category has to be in keeping with market readiness, customer aspirations and fashion trends. We had our dealers and well wishers, very often, asking us about the T-shirt category. We took our time to study the market and finally introduced a product, targeting the discerning consumers in Sri Lanka, who expect the very best in quality, style and comfort”. Continuing, he declared, “We take great care of our product, starting from procuring of the fabric, as we always purchase made to order fabric from the leading knitting mills in the international market. We seek to change the perception of Sri Lankan T-shirt market currently flooded with cheaper imports. We have launched the T-shirt with a focus on providing our customers a good product at a reasonable price, as we always believe that today’s customer is not looking at low priced products but seeks value for his hard earned money”. Agreements with the Indian government have helped small and medium size organizations achieve such milestones, milestones not only for the company but also for our nation. Reborn is an eight year old brand with humble beginnings, initially the product was only a simple t-shirt but over the years the brand Reborn has evolved into a variety of t-shirts, shorts, Sunday pants and beach skinnies’. Do the Scots look different from the Englsih ? Do the Basques look different from the Spanish ? Do the Catholics in Northern Ireland look different from the Protestants ? :| Point is there could be some minor differences in appearances, clothing style etc but then what do you aim to achieve by such a question ? Concepts of differentiating people based on race are long gone. There are more things in common than differences according to gene pool studies. dreadathecontrols November 10th, 2008, 07:17 PM Jesus Mr F give him a break. Mace,my answer is not a lot.Tamils are from Tamil , Sth India , are dravidian., where as Sinhalise are originaly from N India. The 4000 years that they've been in Sri Lanka have rendered the differences slight. The Aryan, Dravidian divide is not as explicit as you so simplistically prescribe here. Apples in the right box and oranges in the left :|. While I agree there might have been very little blood mixing between the Tamils and Sinhalese I dont think there is much marked genetic differences and the gene pool would be very similar. So what is Dravidian and what is Aryan ? ( I hope this is what you mean when you say N Indian ). The racial divide theory is long gone. The differences are obviously culturally constructed due to social isolation ( different group of language, religion, customs etc ) over the periods in history rather than by genetics. And if you really want to know both Tamils and Sinhalese are not entirely homogenous groups. Language was assimilated by communities/groups over the years. Some theorists claim that some Tamils could possible have Sinhalese origins and possibly even vice versa. dreadathecontrols November 11th, 2008, 12:06 AM Yep i agree with u, absolutely. So here I go again.. I am still not a fan of distinguishing looks based on communities/race/nationality. So go in the India forum and ask in the Bollywood thread ooh, Big B looks so fair, is he is a Brahmin ? What is the point ? Americans have sharper nose than the British, British women are fatter than the French, 2.3476% of Scots have more blonde hair than the English, Brummies ears are a lot sharper than the Mans, straight men and gay men look different.. I can tell by one look, oh her eyes look blue cos she has 30% Irish blood in her, Chinese are the 'yellow people' and Afrocarrebeans smell better than the Africans. :| yeah these line of talking where does it lead to ? This is how opinion forms and people 'judge' others on such stupid little analogies. Why adopt a language that is race/caste/community conscious first of all unless ofcourse it is necessary ? I am no fan of such talk, all old school in my book, obviously its your choice if you want to go on speaking in those terms. Distinguishing looks based on race, ethnicity to doesnt sound erudite to me, and as a responsible netizen I always try and make sure that gossips and false opinions dont keep spreading by such means. dreadathecontrols November 11th, 2008, 05:38 PM We're repeating? Starting life just 20 months ago as a theatre-themed in-store concession at ODEL, the concept cum brand has extended to seven locations in Sri Lanka, including a standalone outlet at Crescat, and is now dazzling shoppers at Illuma, Singapore’s newest arts and entertainment shopping mall. A sophisticated 500 square-foot Backstage shop that opened for business in Singapore this week retails a range of hand-picked fashion jewellery products such as earrings, rings, necklaces, bangles, bracelets and brooches. Besides jewellery, space is allocated for hand bags, belts, scarves, sunglasses, slippers, wallets and purses, watches, trinket boxes, cosmetics, beauty tools, cosmetic bags and lingerie. “Singapore will be a great test for Backstage,” said Otara Gunewardene, founder and CEO of ODEL who conceptualized and owns the brand. “It is a chic, mature and brand-conscious market that is also discerning about quality. The success of Backstage in the city state will be an ideal stepping stone to further expansion in overseas markets.” She disclosed that later this year, Backstage will open its second outlet in Singapore at Orchard Central and also plans to enter the Maldives and India. http://www.dailynews.lk/2009/04/02/z_pi-ODEL.jpg Taking its name from its innovative concept, Backstage is a theatre-themed retail avenue offering women a vast range of high quality after dark fashion accessories in a unique ambience where shoppers can try on accessories in spaces designed to make them feel like they are literally ‘backstage’ and preparing to go on a show. Taking this concept to a new level of sophistication, the new Backstage outlet in Singapore is decorated with bulb-encrusted mirrors, spotlights, lip-shaped dressing table chairs, bright pink trimmings and dazzling accessories that combine to give the outlet a silvery classic yet modern look. “Even in the vast variety of Singapore shopping, Backstage stands out as a highly fashionable, trendy and glamorous accessories outlet and we expect it to be an instant hit,” said Janine Magrath, Business Development Manager for Backstage Retail (Singapore) Private Ltd. She said one of the key strengths of Backstage will be the attractive prices averaging at S$ 20, the width of the range and the trend-compiled products. “Backstage targets women between 16 and 35 years but also caters to fashion conscious older women who are keen on making an impression by complementing their outfits with a diverse and trendy range of accessories,” Ms Magrath said. “The accessories are youthful yet sophisticated, glamorous and fun, and anyone who appreciates this diversity falls in to our target market.” The Backstage product range at the new outlet in Singapore focuses on several key seasonal trends such as ‘Blush,’ ‘Boho Forest,’ ‘Sherbet Dip,’ ‘Multi Brights,’ ‘Tribal,’ ‘Monochrome,’ and ‘Atlantis’. These represent international style stories which help women accessorize according to the occasion, their favourite seasonal trends and their personal taste. In Sri Lanka, Backstage is present at Odel’s flagship store at Alexandra Place, Crescat, Majestic City, and at the Odel stores in Kohuwala, Ja-Ela and Nugegoda (Warehouse). Conveniently situated at the Hameedia Flagship Store at No. 34, Galle Road, Wellawatte, “The Grooms’ Studio” is the first-of-its-kind in the region and caters to the minutest details of bridegrooms-to-be, literally from head to toe. The Flagship Store boasts of over 10,000 sq. feet with an especially dedicated floor where nearly 2000 sq feet are devoted to grooms, with an additional 4000 sq feet devoted to formal suits. Hameedia Managing Director Fouzul Hameed said that around 90% of Sri Lankan bridegrooms were unfortunately a sadly neglected species in comparison to their brides. “Tradition has it that a great deal of attention is paid to brides months ahead of the wedding, whereas the groom is almost taken for granted. It was primarily with this in mind that ‘The Grooms’ Studio’ was conceived and then created”. A prospective bridegroom can avail himself of the specialised consultancy services of Fouzul Hameed and his experienced Grooming Team at “The Groom’s Studio’ with regard to every facet of a man’s grooming requirements. He will be advised on all his clothing needs from head to toe - from which kind of suit to choose, to how to match his accessories etc with special emphasis on individual tastes and preferences. This also includes the groom’s entire retinue, to complete the total picture. Creating a Sri Lankan first, The Grooms’ Studio is parallely geared to creating custom-made clothes for the groom, if he wishes to harmonise with the bride’s color schemes. A special feature here is that shirts, ties and socks can be custom-made so as to match with the bridal retinue and thus create a perfect picture on that special day. “Being Sri Lanka’s leading menswear specialist, we deal with a wide range of original brands – international labels and also our own. This has enabled us to further cater to the personalised and diverse needs of the groom from shirts, bows, handkerchiefs and ties to belts, socks and even shoes”, Hameed added. “Being a bridegroom doesn’t only involve dressing well and looking good. It also involves déportement and the total look. The experience at The Grooms Studio thus does not stop at clothes alone but encompasses areas like hair and skin care, posture and manners etc since these too are vital components for the overall look. In fact nothing is impossible. With our years of experience in men’s grooming, The Grooms Studio guarantees all bridegrooms a total look for a perfect experience”, Hameed said. www.adaderana.lk (http://www.adaderana.lk/news.php?nid=2950) phil.froelich April 29th, 2009, 02:11 PM Nice concept, Hameedia is quite good...but there service is rather poor... Well, it is like this...personally I think a nice, good suit and so on looks a lot more "global", not western and hence it may help other countries to accept ours more and this may help improve international relations...the national custome is worn by them probably to appeal to the less fortunate Sri Lankans who still make up the bulk of the population...this propaganda centered move is very understandable if you look at what most politicians are like...maybe they are also to lazy to dress up "properly", so to say...I think that the more our country develops, this habit will change...this transformation due to globalisation and international integration can already be witnessed freely and vastly in all urban centres in Sri Lanka...coming back to my point about suits being "global", not western...even East Asian, Latin American, some African, South-East Asian and some other nations all have adopted this international trend and so I think it will be inevitable in time to come, we shall see what the future holds in hand... Amal May 1st, 2009, 07:45 PM Yeah, I wish all our big boys in the government would wear western clothes. They all look butt ugly in those stupd "national" costume. "As I wander about throughout the length and breadth of India, I see many Christian Indians ashamed of their birth, certainly of their ancestral religion, and of their ancestral dress. The aping of Europeans by Anglo-Indians is bad enough, but the aping of them by the Indian converts is a violence done to their country and, shall I say, even to their new religion. Is it not truly deplorable that many Christian Indians discard their own mother tongue, bring up their children only to speak in English? Do they not thereby completely cut themselves adrift from the nation in whose midst they have to live? " - Mahatma Gandhi Lacs21 May 6th, 2009, 03:47 PM Big Pony. Ive been trying to find one in SL. I see things differently now and see a lot of potential for growth.” Odel plans to sell a stake in the company to overseas investors and spend $20 million to add another 70,000 square feet to its flagship store in Colombo and open new outlets in other cities in the country. Courtesy: www.bloomberg.com phil.froelich June 20th, 2009, 09:07 PM Yes, finally we see the much awaited expansion of ODEL, after years of stagnation (at the main outlet/store)... saraprobe June 21st, 2009, 03:50 AM doo1s1X3-Ds Sri Lanka’s largest fashion retailer Odel is looking to divest a part of its shareholding to finance a major expansion drive. Odel is looking at a divesture worth of US $ 20 million which would be utilized to expand its existing departmental store in Colombo 7, adding a further 70,000 square feet to the store’s dimension. ‘As the country is now free from terror, we feel that an expansion programme at the moment would bring us fruitful benefits in the future when tourists start flooding in,’ Odel Chief Executive Officer, Otara Gunewardena said. She said that Odel was also looking to extend its branch network outside of Colombo targeting the major cities. ‘Although we have these plans for the future, the present global economic scenario might actually slow down our expansion plans,’ she said. At present, the flagship store located at Alexandra Place, Colombo 7 and launched in 1999 spans across 33,000 square feet. Odel is Sri Lanka’s first example of a retailing company and the first department store in Sri Lanka developed to international western standards. Last month, Odel also opened a 500 square-foot fashion accessories store for women called ‘Backstage’ in Illuma, at a shopping complex in Singapore. There isnt much space in the city. If Odel is going to expand using the current parking area for new floor space, then where are people going to park? on the roundabout just outside? So in this case the best way would be to have underground parking or perhaps use part of that land for an above ground multi-level parking structure. Anyway.. let's see how they plan to expand. Perhaps they are acquiring new land, however, parking is already a major issue now. There just isnt enough parking space at Odel. phil.froelich June 23rd, 2009, 03:09 PM Yeah, I agree with you Pilotofthefuture...I think they will use the parking area and land on the left, behind Visioncare and thereabouts to expand...so then the store will increase in size substantially and we would probably also see more customers, so I guess underground parking is the only realistic and aestetically appealing solution, but it will surely be an expensive investment...however it will prove worthwile in the long run I guess... Gamarala June 23rd, 2009, 04:57 PM If we had highways going from city center to the suburbs, this wouldn't have been a problem. Instead of overbuilding in a already congested area, they could have just moved the entire store a little ways outside the city, and it'll generally have taken less time to get there than the current location, with all the crazy traffic. Given that we don't have such highways :( , they could always build over the current parking lot. Have say, the first 2 floors for parking, and the store proper above it. slmasala June 23rd, 2009, 06:38 PM http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8AkmQkc7BzU/SdJYe22RGYI/AAAAAAAABFg/3jfSUjLhWK0/s1600-h/Bride+Chandani+Bandara+4ever+4.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8AkmQkc7BzU/SdJX8pOWoOI/AAAAAAAABEw/EdHHBXIJiXs/s1600-h/Bride+Chandani+Bandara+4ever+3.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8AkmQkc7BzU/SdJX8N8Zj6I/AAAAAAAABEo/_TwqYV_Xfos/s400/Bride+Chandani+Bandara+4ever+2.jpg View All Images (http://srilankanmasala.blogspot.com/2009/06/bridal-dressings-by-chandani-bandara.html):banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: Arkitektonix June 24th, 2009, 04:37 AM I beg to differ. That's why my username is PILOTofthefuture. Of course i got no clue of the engineering point of view! Lol. I was just giving my opinion that the only practical method of expanding in that area will be to utilize the space efficiently instead of just using the land for a ground level parking lot only. I did suggest in my earlier post that an above ground multi-level parking structure would be viable too. But my point in the end was this- make use of the land efficiently for expansion by allowing several levels (basement, above ground or whatever is best) for parking and shopping space. I guess i should have made that clear initially.
