Most of those types of roofs are made by a company right here in Buffalo, NY, Birdair. Here is a link to their stadium projects.

You know that University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale Arizona is a dome but its a canvas material that they use to cover it with. I remember seeing it on Build it Bigger when they walked across it.

Where are the images of the new Dunedin stadium from? All I've ever seen are vague statements that Carisbrook might possibly be replaced, maybe.

I am surprised that nobody mentioned Key Arena over in Seattle, which is home to both the Seattle Supersonics and Seattle Storm.

This thead says sports facitilities with tent-like roofs, and Key Arena tends to resemble a tent. I was never told that it had to litterally be one with an airfilled roof like the ones that are shown. However, the design that Key Arena has is pretty rare, and not too many arenas are like this.

Quite a few of the newer German stadia have fabric roofs. I've been trying to find the acoustic properties. Do they absorb the noise or reflect it. I know acoustic curtains are used in some arenas to absorb unwanted noise and reduce echos. A football stadium probably wants the opposite effect with the sound reflected back to keep the atmosphere/chanting/singing inside the stadium and projected out onto the pitch. Anyone any experience/data on this?

Adelaide Oval in 1974. No stands on the outer of the ground & no seating on the fence line, just concrete terraces. Also, no lights & the John Creswell Stand is still there.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/5129/adelaideoval113sx2.jpg

Compare this to Adelaide Oval in 2008. The old John Creswel Stand at the southern end is gone, replaced by the Sir Donald Bradman Stand (1990). The Chappell Stands (2003) are now on the outer (eastern) wing and a new undercover area is in place on the south-eastern hill. Also, lights have been installed (1997).

And through it all, the scoreboard has remained the same as it has for over a century. Hand operated.

The 2010 Soccer World Cup Moses Madiba stadium in Durban will have a tent/canopy roof suspended from its arch. The stadium is under construction and will be completed in mid 2009.

The retractable roof of the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt which folds up into the videocube might probably also be of interest:

Interesting about this retractable roof is, that it's not allowed to be closed in winter time (I believe it was from November util april) because it can't hold up heavy loads of snow which are possible in wintertime here.

They absorb because of concerts, reflective surfaces would kill any sound mix and turn it into a muddy mess. A lot of those stadiums are probably designed for large concerts and the money in that. The difference on crowd noise would be pretty small, so I wouldn't be surprised to find out that they use sound dampeners.
