SteelCity32 August 30th, 2003, 08:32 PM it doesn't look that good from afar, but up close, it's better.
6.5/10
Labrador August 30th, 2003, 08:39 PM 7.5/10
For a capital city, the skyline isn't very good, but for a city of 180,000, it's very impressive. I like the way the hills and trees are right near the city - it gives it an un-polluted look.
:)

great skyline for a city of its size.
renell September 2nd, 2003, 06:09 PM pretty good for it's population 6.5
RafflesCity September 2nd, 2003, 06:15 PM 7/10
Not too bad. Quite beautiful.
SeeMacau September 4th, 2003, 12:02 PM Boxy skyscrapers
7/10
Justme September 4th, 2003, 12:12 PM As a skyline, there is nothing special. It's nice, but it's small. 3/10
However, the fact that Wellington has only 340,000 people in it's entire metro area (most cities have single suburbs with this population) it does very well indeed. 8/10
So, taking both into account I say 6/10. Not a bad effort for such a tiny city!
invincible September 4th, 2003, 02:43 PM The interesting thing about Wellington is that it's a very lively city of its size. I was born in Wellington and lived there until 1997. I used to live on the same street as Wellington's then-tallest.
Wellington feels a lot bigger than it really is and there's lots of density street-level with lots of 15-20 storey buildings.
And it's got a larger city population than Sydney and Melbourne combined.
8/10, great skyline for its size.
Justme September 4th, 2003, 02:51 PM I agree that it feels bigger than it is. Probably a lot also to do with being the nations capital.
When you say it has a larger city population that Sydney and Melbourne combined, I presume you mean city proper.
Speaking of which, one of the smallest city propers I came across recently was Perth. Which only has 6,300 people. (compared to it's metro of 1.5million)
Kaneda September 4th, 2003, 06:21 PM Much better then I expected and very good for a city its size. 6.5/10 :)
SydneyDude September 8th, 2003, 10:42 AM wow impressive for its size!
alot of 'capital cities' have pretty bad skylines. Wellington has a much better skyline than Canberra (Canberra hardly has a skyline) and Washington doesnt have much of a skyline either.
7/10 for surprising me
AndrewC September 8th, 2003, 06:56 PM Wow!
It looks a decent small skyline from a distance, up close and in the streets it looks even better!
A posotive 7.
AndrewC September 8th, 2003, 06:58 PM I gave it an 8, cause i like it. :)
Talisker September 10th, 2003, 11:08 AM This is a much better skyline than I'd expected overall. I'm not sure about the designs though - very boxy. 6/10 for the skyline, 5/10 for the standard of buildings.

VanSeaPor March 13th, 2005, 07:45 AM Wellington is a beautiful city, and those photos hardly shows any of the skyline. It looks best from the motorway looking across the harbour. Only 2 buildings above 100 metres though.
MattSal March 13th, 2005, 03:41 PM Beautiful city. And with a good skyline to boast it, especially for such a small city. I give it a 8/10.
KulasKusgan March 13th, 2005, 03:55 PM beautiful city, no doubt. but not much skyline.

MuddyZehbra32 March 13th, 2005, 05:47 PM that is very curious...It makes me want one. Yeh, I am definatly getting one someday. i frogot to say what I rate this city. I rate it an 8 because it's nice looking amd they have geyser boats :)

mtb_nz March 25th, 2005, 12:51 AM You really have to live there to appreciate wellingtons true beauty. But I do think Wellington really needs a nice tall building in the middle of the city sky scrape, which would give it some more character.
Thing is that wellington cant really have super tall buildings because of the risk from earthquakes, as there are some nice big fault lines that go through wellington.
An awesome city to live in.... 10/10 for living in the city..... and 8/10 for skyline
VanSeaPor March 29th, 2005, 09:00 AM They could easily do that. Make it earthquake proof. Look at my city, they have alot of skyscrapers and it's got the same earthquake risk as Wellington.
Wezza March 30th, 2005, 12:21 PM Some nice scraper canyons there. :)
Tasman March 31st, 2005, 02:00 AM They could easily do that. Make it earthquake proof. Look at my city, they have alot of skyscrapers and it's got the same earthquake risk as Wellington.
Yeah but in Wellington the CBD is built upon reclamied land which is very likely to sink in an earthquake. The major fault line of New Zealand actually runs 400m from the center of the city! Not only that, the only road access out of the CBD north is a motorway that actually runs along the fault line!

sharpie20 April 17th, 2006, 02:29 AM I think it would be easier if someone put up pictures that had the skyline from afar instead of in the city's center. But from what i can see it looks pretty good

Sister Ray April 23rd, 2006, 04:51 AM Wellington is a great city to live in, no doubt. However, the skyline does not really impress me. Too small, lack of interesting buildings. If Auckland's an 8.5, Wellington can't be more than 6. The hills behind the city and the harbour are gorgeous though.

ok, I'm not knocking Wellington here, but I just want to point out the fallacy with urban myth statistics. Someone in the media does some figures and prints them, and without anyone checking them out, they become gospel.
What's worse, is that they often develop into the monster that we see above.
Effectively, The original claim was that Wellington had more restaurants per capita than New York - and this is no big deal. Afterall at one time or another one may have slightly more or less than the other.
And yes, maybe at one point, the per capita figure for Wellington was higher than New York. But what exactly does that mean.
However, never did any claim describe New York as having the most per capita in the world, nor Wellington with second place.
Let's look at some raw figures.
Wellington has around 350 restaurants and a city proper population of 182,823 (2005 estimate)
http://www.wellingtonnz.com/AboutWellington/
New York City has around 19,000 restaurants with a city proper population of 8,168,338
http://www.plumbingfoundation.org/pipecaster/2000-04.htm (sorry about the link, I couldn't be bothered looking for more accurate websites, but I have seen this figure before at others)
This means that NY has 0.00232 restaurants per head, whilst Wellington has 0.00191 per head. Now, per capita there is not much difference. But let's put it another way. If you went to a restaurant every night of the week, in slightly less than a year, you would run out of choices, and that means going to every restaurant in the city, including the bad ones.
In New York, it would take you 52 years to visit every restaurant in the city. So in reality, having only 350 restaurants is not such a big deal - it doesn't make it a food capital of the world
As for other cities, there are problems with these comparisons internationally. I know the New York figure includes all places that serve food, including restaurants, bars, cafe's, kiosks, licensed street vendors etc, and from my understanding the Wellington figure includes restaurants, bars (that serve food), and cafe's - however, it may or may not include takeaways, kiosks or street vendors. Other cities are entirely different. London boasts a figure of 6000 licensed restaurants, but this doesn't include pubs and bars which serve food, nor cafe's, kiosks and other eatery's. When you add that figure up, it comes close to the New York total. And we are not even talking the majority of Europe here, which really does have a lot more resturants per capita than New York or Wellington (My suburb of Sachsenhausen in Frankfurt has more than 400 resturants, bars and cafes that serve food for only 54,000 people! And this is only a suburb!)
So, no, there is no such figure that puts Wellington as having the 2nd most restaurants/bars per capita in the world after New York. What it does have is around 350 which is average for an English speaking city of that size.
Sorry for the rant, but I really hate it when urban myths become monsters of misinformation.

Wellington City has a Regional population of 423 000 people. It is the world's most southern capital and the only capital in the "Roaring Forties" latitudes. The city gets more sunshine than Auckland, Melbourne and London and less rain than Auckland and Sydney. Welly was voted the 18th hippest city in the world by Conde Naste Traveller magazine readers. Enjoy -

The Boy David November 10th, 2006, 07:43 PM Such an interesting looking place! The scale of it is bizarre - one part looks like a city, another looks like a cosy hillside village, and another looks like a beach resort.
Very strange, but quite impressive!

Cristovão471 January 20th, 2007, 03:09 PM The interesting thing about Wellington is that it's a very lively city of its size.
Sydney actually has 150,000 in an area of 25 km2
Wellingon has 180,000 in 260km2
But I really want to visit it! looks sweet

??? 260km² is not big, and the wikipedia is correct which places actually at 280km². This can be referenced from Wellington council's official website:

KevD September 16th, 2007, 10:43 PM WOW! I had no idea that Wellington only had about 370,000 thousand... its probably more now... but still... for a city with 400,000 people even... This is so impressive! very dense. not super tall, but there's a few fairly tall towers. 8/10.

It cannot be compared to Canberra. I can't really think of anywhere in NZ like Canberra -- maybe Albany, in theory.
Canberra is a planned capital like Brasilia, Abuja and Washington DC.
Wellington is a natural beauty -- that happens to be capital . It's more comparable to Hobart, Tasmania or Victoria, BC.

Surely for a city of only 400,000 (metro area), it's one of the best in the world. It's extremely compact.
