I had before, it's a perfect gateway to the Namib desert which is somewhere I'd like to visit in the future.

I also know that it's one of the only German speaking areas of Africa as they're few and far between.

Finally, I also know that you've posted this same thread all over SSC - I saw it in the UK section. :bash:

I hadn't heard of it before, no - but it looks brilliant! And yes, I am surprised by your pics. I did a Google for some more info and found that it has a population of 30,000 - I have to say that most Australian cities of 30,000 or so don't look as prosperous, urbane or solid as Swakopmund!

What is wrong with that? I don't look in other country's forums so I am glad he has posted it here as I really enjoy seeing photos from other parts of the world and I am sure others do to.

Thanks for the photos Matthias, very nice city.

Looks great.
It is some sort of Dutch enclave?

Thanks for the photos Matthias, very nice city.

You have to understand where my comment came from. Matthias is notorious for slagging off European nations and pushing the merits of African nations. He's got an agenda for showing these pictures. ;)

I agree, it's nice to see different parts of the world, but you have to understand why they look as they do and understand that African nations like to paint very rosy pictures of themselves, or at least some forumers like to...

Swakopmund is a rather rich city by African standards and is perfectly located too near Walvis baai (Whale Bay) which is the more industrial and functional settlement.

Anyway, to get back on topic follow the link:

I think this is one of the most amazing photos from Swakopmund simply because it shows how close the desert is to the city!

THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS:)

Concerning Svarmetallīs commenst which seem to come out of nowhere, it is very sad to hear people say that about other people, i donīt go to other forum telling lies about certain forumers... I just came over to show pictures of a nicely developped city in africa to people on the Autralian forum who surely donīt know too much about that far-flung continent and then someone comes along and tells defamotory stuff about me! I have not even talked to him on any forum which makes it even more questionable...and as for the positive aspect, arenīt we all showing positive images of the cities we are living in?:)

but anyway thanks for your interest in the thread!:)

^^ The thread on "Fairytale Germany" which showed German castles was one example that I actually left you a comment to which you never responded. You moaned that "real Germany didn't look like that". Thus the same tarring could be applied to your presentation of little known African cities which are rather subjective of course! For some reason you took umbrage to the fact that people LIKED the presentation of the country and went out of your way to badmouth the country talking about the economy, how the country was failing etc!

To quote:
Nice pics... but do these pictures also tell something about the vivid Neo-Nazi scences in Germany? About the dozens of Indians that nearly lost their lives in East Germany while no German (onlookers) saved these people from being literally slaughtered? About the steadily growing job insecurity in all parts of Germany, something which is holding back consumers tp spend their money freely? About the racist attacks that foreigners encounter on a daily basis in the streets and everyday life? About the growing rate of unemployment and frustration among its citizens? About the rising living costs and stagnant or even falling wages? About the frequent strikes? About the daily struggle of the average middle-class German to make both ends meet? About the mothers that dump their babies out of the window because they are so damn frustrated? About the growing numbers of Germans that are looking for greener pastures elsewhere because they are so fed up with "immaculate" Germany for a variety of reasons that I donīt want to enlarge on in the context of this thread?

There is more to German than Siemens, Porsche, Autobahns, alluring scenery and well-kept cities... in reality, Germany is far from being a fairy tale country!

Of course, none of the above is any more than rhetoric, completely unfounded and untrue rhetoric at that, I gave a full reply in that thread. This whole statement here is "POT KETTLE BLACK" in terms of how selective your pictures are of African nations and THIS is why I get annoyed with you when you go showcasing in other parts of the forum.

As I said in that post, I respect your work for Africa, however, your attittude demonstrated towards European nations in that thread very much disappointed me especially since you posted so many quality photos on the African forum.

Just because I don't talk to you doesn't mean I don't watch your threads as I find many of them very interesting. :)

Anyway, I'm not going to spoil your thread by ranting at you, sorry for my remarks earlier.

Svartmetal,, I really donīt you what you are talking about, I am half European, so how can I badmouth the country where I partly ethnically come from?

You do seem to have a serious problem with me although I have never ever talked to you nor met you personally before in my life, my sole interest as I have said was to come here just to show some pictures of a little quaint city in Africa, the sub-section "Beyong Autralia" invited me to do so. Is it forbidden to inform people of a various places?:)

So please, what ever I have done in your eyes (something of which I am unaware) let it be forgotten. and please do not derail this thread with naughty comments.

As I can see it is well received by the other members who contibuted and displayed their interest and appreciation so far.:)

Peace, Svartmetall:)

Jeez. Seems to be a hugely wealthy corner of Africa. It'd be haunting to see the desert sitting there everyday - kind of reminds you about how delicate your existence would be right there on the edge of the desert and with the ocean on the other side. Loved them - thanks for sharing!
