Urumchi or Ürümqi -with a population of about 2.6 million, is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, in the northwest of the country. It is also farther away from sea than any other large city in the world.
Economy
Ürümqi is a major industrial center within Xinjiang. Ürümqi, together with Karamay and Bayin'gholin account for 64.5% of the total industrial output of Xinjiang. Ürümqi is also the largest consumer center in the region, recording ¥19.1 billion retail sales of consumer goods in 2004, accounting for 33.9% of the region's total retail value. The GDP per capita was ¥22,820 (ca. US$2,850) in 2004 [1]. Ürümqi has been a central developmental target for the "Develop the West" project that the Central Government is pursuing.

fk310 May 10th, 2004, 05:24 AM Great pics. I went to Urumqi two years ago. It was a very modern city. It also has a lot of ethnic diversity, being in the Uighur autonomous region of Northwest China.
I like it that they incorporate a lot of Islamic Uighur architecture with their buildings.
7 World Trade May 10th, 2004, 05:57 AM wow, just as i begin to think i've seen the entire scope of china's modernization, more pics comes in and prove me wrong. it's amazing to think that china's modernization can come so far inland, all the way to an isolated oasis in the desert. now, urumqi looks like any typical chinese city, why, it even looks more clean than chongqing! (chongqing should catch up once the 3 gorges dam opens...)
bolin July 13th, 2004, 02:49 PM i love urumqi
zergcerebrates July 15th, 2004, 09:40 AM A very interesting Chinese city. Islamic taste mix with Chinese, also arabic and Chinese characters alongside is very special.
Pangu July 15th, 2004, 04:03 PM I've been to Urumqi and I absolutely love it.
I was quite honestly surprised by how developed it is. I've never seen a single picture of Urumqi before I arrived and no offense but I was expecting nothing more than a few tents hehe.
During my three day stay there, it felt no different than any other major Chinese city except for the Islamic influence.
Pobbie Rarr August 13th, 2004, 05:42 PM A very interesting Chinese city. Islamic taste mix with Chinese, also arabic and Chinese characters alongside is very special.
Agreed. Xinjiang province is a different world altogether.

hkskyline March 13th, 2006, 01:36 AM Urumqi new trade capital for the west
AP

Monday, March 13, 2006
Above the shouts of Afghan and Pakistani traders, a voice booms in heavily accented Putonghua in the airport in Urumqi, Xinjiang.
"You've got 20,000 meters of cloth?" a bearded trader thunders into a phone. "Great, but don't bother waking the boss. I'll call when I land."
Merchants from Lahore, Karachi and Kabul are struggling to get their purchases aboard a flight to Islamabad.
Businessmen in skull caps and traditional shalwar kameez outfits heave massive bundles to the check-in counter. Off to one side, their partners guard stacks of radio-controlled planes, talking dolls and stuffed animals.
Regional traders are flocking to Urumqi, now a city of four million people. They are part of a revival of a modern-day Silk Road powered by mobile phones and air travel.
Pakistan's trade with China grew 26 percent to a record US$3 billion (HK$23.4 billion) in 2004. It is projected to grow by another US$2 billion for 2005.
Sino-Indian trade has soared in recent years, from a mere US$1 billion in 1991 to US$13.6 billion last year.
The growth can be traced in part to Beijing's drive to lift incomes in the west. Xinjiang has seen its economy boom over the past half-decade: its total trade more than tripled between 2000 and 2004 to US$6 billion.
Trade is conducted in languages including English, the region's native Uygur and, increasingly, Putonghua.
Urumqi now boasts 50-story office blocks, gaudy stores and nightclubs. For sheer glitz and opportunity, there isn't a metropolis to rival it within 2,000 kilometers.
Traders say there's still plenty of room for growth, particularly if free- trade zones are set up.
Yet, like many watching the country's explosive growth, China-based shoe manufacturer Kasheef Gulzar worries that its massive exports will overwhelm businesses such as Pakistan's once-vaunted leather industry.
"It's hard to match their design and quality. They're becoming a kind of center of gravity for regional trade."

fajarmuhasan July 6th, 2009, 10:38 AM I love this city and suprise for the modern cicyscape. Long time ago I heared about the silk road and moslem province in china. In my opinion this province may be only desert or grass land.
Some question for urumqi forumer:
In the other pic/forum, many time I see the water inside urumqi or surrounding urumqi. What kind of this water (lake, river, dam, and absolutely not sea water)???
fajarmuhasan July 6th, 2009, 11:03 AM some question again for urumqi forumer:
I saw the double written in chinese and arabic.
1. What language in written arabic?
2. When the people use chinese and when arabic?
3. How about in the school or university?

i can answer you on the last question for i had several ethnical korean and tibetan students and colleagues. in PRC, there are roughly two kinds of schools, the common ones and ethnical ones. in the first kind, the chinese is teaching language and no ethnical language specialized study. in the second ones, students study their ethnical language and other curriculums whose the text-books are bilingual. children with any ethnicl backdrop can choose to study any kind of those school as they wish. in the eleven-plus, the minorities can get additional academic performance for their ethnical identiy, that is about 10 scores and total score is 750. many ethnical students in colledge can enjoy additional subsidy and grantings than chinese cannt, especially in the 5 nationality universities of the central, middle china, east china, west china, south china. they also have there newspapers, radios and tv stations in their languages.
perhaps, you donnt know, chinese higher-schooling-entrance-tests are extremely cruel, even 1 score in which can shut 1000 students out of college study right. Hence, the addtional 10-score-favor to minority is very unfaire to us Han-chinese.
what is not only limited to that, the minority have no obligation of compliance to the "one-child-policy" , thus they can breed natually. And special huge-extent tax-cut in the minority-autonomy area. Even in any level of governments, there must be at least one leading high officer is minority chinese. minority chinese have more vote-weight in general and local election, either.
i dont know where you are from, but i am sure no country does the same kind things to minority as far as china does.

Chinese Uyghur mostly use a modified form of Arabic as their writing system. Although it is Arabic script, Uyghur is in the Turkic language family. China also introduced a Latin based Uyghur script based on the ones the Soviets made, and I notice some Uyghurs use the Latin one too.
minority language policy from what I read, depends on the region. but because outside of Urumqi, most areas are mostly Uyghur, Uyghur language is usually learned first and then Mandarin is learned in school at an early age. By university level, Mandarin is certainly a prerequsite because there are many courses that can only be taught in Mandarin and not in a local language (i.e very few Uyghur, Tibetan, or whatever materials on say, Chemistry).
As for the leniency on Child rules for minorities, it should be clarified that it applies to minorities that are under 10 million. Most minorities are smaller than 10 million except for the Zhuang, although the Manchus should be above 10 by now, andm maybe the Uyghur
Aesthetics of Otara July 8th, 2009, 08:48 AM i dont know where you are from, but i am sure no country does the same kind things to minority as far as china does.
Actually most countries do the same thing to their minorites as China does. I'm from New Zealand and we used the same trick of flooding their communities with our own people under the guise of modernising them, undermining the usefulness of their language, making their customs unviable, and then when they are were nearly dead as a culture and useful for no more than tourist photos, we gave them all sorts of welfare and educational advantages to compensate for the role we played in destroying their identity.
No, not unique to China. Australia, New Zealand, and all of the American continent have done the same thing. It's all quite natural.
didu July 8th, 2009, 09:55 AM ^^ that's NZ's problem, not China's.
The Uyghurs are free to move out of the cities that were built by the Han people, or not send their children to the schools that teach in the language spoken by the rest of the country. They are free to trade with their own people, live among their own people, and make a living out of their traditional trades. No one is forcing them to pose for tourists, or speak a different language or use any of the modernities provided by the Han people.

But you don't get it, what you said above applies to my county as well. The brilliance of the trick is that nobody forces them to do anything, either in China or New Zealand. We just set it up so that no other way is a realistic option for them.
Aren't we clever?
didu July 8th, 2009, 10:40 AM ^^ I know exactly what you mean. However, the Uyghurs live vastly different lifestyles as the Maoris in NZ. Maoris are everywhere in NZ, the two situations are apples and oranges, and cannot be compared.
fajarmuhasan July 9th, 2009, 09:16 AM OK thankyou for answer, I come from Indonesia. I will share about in my country:
In my country, we have many many laguange depend on region maybe over than 100 kind. But in the school, the teacher use national languange (Bahasa Indonesia) also texbook. Local languange use daily outside the school. Except Jakarta as capital and Banten, all province apply local languange as part of curriculum in elementary school up to junior high school. So some school apply 3 language i.e Bahasa Indonesia, Local language and foreign languange (English).
Just share....

In comparison, in Indonesia, as i understand from my Indonesian friends, in the past, as recent as 10 years ago, Chinese (in China context that will be Han Chinese) is banned in schools. There are 8 million Chinese in Indonesia FYI, as much as there are Turks in China.
The Chinese in indonesia are not allowed to have Chinese names, Chinese words or characters are not allowed to be shown in public.

You sound very proud of your country's education system for different ethnic groups, but...it's horrible for the Chinese living in your country, why don't you help them send a email to your president with their rights to learn/inherit their own Chinese culture.

No need to send email to president because since Mr. Soeharto replaced by Mr. Habibie as president, Indonesia government allows chinese culture like barongsai, etc. also mandarine language applied in selective school, and chinese new year (we call imlek) also become national holiday...
and for your information small riot still happen in our country but not including chinese or other migrant. Only local people vs local such as in Papua.

drunkenmunkey888 July 18th, 2012, 03:10 PM But modernization makes each city looking similar from above. It seems impossible in China to build a unique modern place full of local cultures in architecture and street life.
Most cities in other countries look the same as well. Many English cities look just like smaller versions of London. Many American cities (with the exception of NYC, Boston and DC) all look very similar. Japanese cities look just like smaller versions of Tokyo.
In fact, I feel like China has one of the more varied regional cities. Xi'an is full of imitation Tang dynasty architecture (some might find this tacky b/c they are still modern buildings, but IMO it would be very appreciated decades from now). Manzhouli looks very different from Suzhou, which looks very different from Xiamen.
big-dog July 19th, 2012, 07:57 AM ^^ I agree Beijing is different from Shanghai. But for most other cities I would only agree with you if all the commie blocks and new steel-glasses are removed. The new buildings are having a bigger weight over the traditional ones. I'm not a nimby but architects and city planners should have some style in mind when they design/approve EVERY building. Maybe only Beijing, Suzhou follow this in some kinds, others are busy developing and following and don't have time to keep the soul of a city in buildings.
