ignoramus November 10th, 2007, 12:05 PM Final race begins on proposals for Singapore Sports Hub
Posted: 05 November 2007 1551 hrs
SINGAPORE: The three bidders for the Singapore Sports Hub have revealed their designs for a fully-integrated sports centre to be built on the current National Stadium site.
The three bidders Alpine Mayreder, Singapore Gold and the Singapore Sports Hub Group took turns to present their proposals which will include the development of recreational and leisure hubs.
The proposal by Alpine is for a stadium that's wrapped with a translucent fabric which provides a canvas for lighting effects along with an urban beach and a Viewing Tower.
The fabric called PTFE, which has been used widely around the world is said to be self-cleaning as well as durable under any condition, was inspired by gift wrapping, as the design is meant as a present to Singapore.
As for the Singapore Sports Hub Group, it's proposing a dome-shaped design that uses lightweight material and features air conditioning and even a white water rafting facility.
Mr Ludwig Reichhold, Managing Director of Dragages Singapore Pte Ltd, the design and build contractor, said their biggest selling point is their program which promises to be a thriving and sustainable integrated sports, entertainment and healthy lifestyle hub.
“You can design a very nice stadium but if it is not suitable for what you want to do, it won’t be useful. We have many cities where stadiums are built for the Olympic games or other such events but it is empty after that. So we want to avoid this and we think we have achieved that by working as a team involving the designers, sporting people and the retailers to make one integrated facility,” said Mr Reichhold.
The stadium which will blend with the surrounding Indoor Stadium, promises to be energy-saving yet cool for spectators as the cooling systems will be supplied from under the seats of spectators with fan assisted breezes.
By having a system that cools individual seats, the entire space or volume isn't being cooled, just the zone immediately around where the person is sitting. By doing this,a tenth of the energy that's typically used in an arena is consumed.
The SingaporeGold Consortium which had shown its design in March this year for a stadium shaped like a horse-shoe featuring a retractable field and roof, has now incorporated a water sports centre.
"The inclusion of the new water sports centre enhances our design and allows for a greater range of sporting events and programmes never before possible in Singapore, creating year-round buzz and ensuring Sports Hub becomes a vibrant destination in its own right" said Mark Adams, senior vice-president of IMG in Singapore, which is a key member of the SingaporeGold consortium.
There are also plans for the recreation centre to provide more than just sports but community attractions as well that will offer something for everyone.
A 41 square metre space has been set aside for a combination of sports mega stores, themed retail and dining outlets, night markets and even a themed sports bar.
Commercial partners have also been lined up to operate facilities that could include a world-first virtual sporting reality centre, an extreme sports zone, and a Sports Museum.
With the inclusion of the water sports centre, the Sports Hub which has ambitions to attract mega sporting events to Singapore, like the 2018 Asiad,
promises to attract a range of world-class sporting and entertainment events to one location.
The 35 hectare facility at Kallang is due to be completed in 2011, and will be the world's first large-scale integrated land and sea sports facility.
The hub will transform the Kallang site's limited water frontage into a 2.6 kilometre waterfront promenade lined with retail, food and beverage outlets, outdoor plazas, and landscaped gardens.
The decision on the winning proposal will be made in late January next year.- CNA/yb/vm
Sbz2ifc November 10th, 2007, 03:12 PM I don't really like any of the proposals. I hope they won't choose the last one.
ZZ-II November 10th, 2007, 05:36 PM first one looks great but the last....really ugly imo
BOM November 10th, 2007, 05:44 PM I agree, the first one is the only suitable one.
The second looks like the Beijing stadiums and the third one is just... blah.
kurakura November 10th, 2007, 06:57 PM lst one. coz its looks grand and timeless. the last one is a joke.
Second City November 13th, 2007, 05:58 AM I like the first one. But the other two suck!
Gaeus November 13th, 2007, 05:00 PM First one is great but I agree that there needs to be more renders.
henshin November 13th, 2007, 09:19 PM i vote for the singapore sports hub (1st pic). the environment, the urbanisation, the are all in complete set. while both of other two pics, doesnt fit well with the eco-environment, and loose in term of design strategies and public relation. the last picture seems to be very typical design
amras November 15th, 2007, 03:02 PM well to be honest none of the designs are original. but I agree that the best among the three is the singapore sports hub proposal. the second design is trying to match the existing structures but still is very average. the 3rd one.. hmm I dont really get it... looks like a month old cake in the fridge. but it seems that the roof is retractable, that's something.
but heck, any of these stadiums will be very much welcomed in Manila. Singapore's old stadium is even way better than Manila's current one.
Cliff November 16th, 2007, 02:59 AM I can't make up my mind, in my opinion...
Singapore Sports Hub
The form of this one is the best, it gives a very appropriate negative relation to the Singapore Indoor Stadium
Alpine
The tratment of this on is most interesting, its tasteful and clean, unlike the other two, which are either cluttered, or sport disgusting colour choices
Singapore Gold
This is obviously the ugliest design, but its planning is really excellent, the carved in lagoon is really useful and beautiful at the same time.
What would be perfect is the planning of Singapore gold, with Sports Hub's stadium, in Alpine's treatment.:D

Apparently correct me if I'm wrong but Singapore Gold's proposal's field can slide out into the waters, thereby creating a artificial water body within the stadium. :) Don't know how practical it can be, or how nice it could be....
CarlosBlueDragon November 16th, 2007, 05:09 PM i look best SINGAPORE SPORTS HUB!! :)
Cliff November 16th, 2007, 05:16 PM Apparently correct me if I'm wrong but Singapore Gold's proposal's field can slide out into the waters, thereby creating a artificial water body within the stadium. :) Don't know how practical it can be, or how nice it could be....
It is true that the entire field can be pulled out of the stadium, like a giant barge, to expose the lagoon beneath for water sports, as well as literally opening the stadium to the city skyline; the first and only of its kind in the world. However, I have heard that this is not included in the bidding budget, and hence will probably not happen as it would add considerable cost.

It looks like you edited the pic?
A nice idea, just that it could have expensive running costs, plus it has that ugly color and average looking stadium design. :)
In case anyone thought the field sunk into the water, no it just got moves leftwards out of the stadium into the bay.
Brummyboy92 November 18th, 2007, 10:13 AM I love the first one, not to keen on the other two.
skaP187 November 18th, 2007, 07:55 PM No pics of singapore gold with roof open? I think it is a spectacular design/idea and then specialy the place.
Joop20 November 18th, 2007, 08:52 PM I prefer the first one. The third one sucks, why would you leave one side of the stadium open, so you can flood the stadium with water?
Il_Milanese November 20th, 2007, 12:04 PM I like the second one. The first one is great, but it looks like others in the world, the second one is more innovating according to me.

littlearea January 22nd, 2008, 12:25 PM Cool Dome" design wins Singapore Sports Hub project
SINGAPORE: The "Cool Dome" design, submitted by the Singapore Sports Hub consortium, will be Singapore's next iconic structure.
The Singapore government on Saturday revealed the consortium as its preferred bidder for the Singapore Sports Hub project.
The consortium beats two other bids.
These were the "Horse shoe shaped design" submitted by the Singapore Gold consortium and the "wrapped-Stadium design" submitted by the Alpine Mayreder.
The new sports hub will be completed by end 2011 and will cost some S$1.2 billion.
The integrated complex includes a 55,000-seat capacity stadium with a retractable roof, an aquatic centre, multi-purpose arena and retail space.
In sunny Singapore, the "dome" will allow plenty of ventilation and help bring the temperatures down along with spot cooling for the seats.
But it was the consortium's proposal of sports, entertainment and community programmes that won the vote.
Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development Youth and Sports, said: "They were strongest in offering a comprehensive sporting calendar. For instance they guaranteed 90 event days at the National Stadium and at least 46 sport event days at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The programme consists of a well balanced mix of local, regional and international sporting events and across a wide spectrum of sports which we believe will resonate with our people."
Among the events lined up include an ASEAN clubs soccer league and international cricket matches.
The consortium will have to design, build, operate and finance the project, a first in the world for a mega sports hub.
Dr Balakrishnan said: "Which means the government is not liable for the capital expenditure. What we do is in exchange for contracted services, at a standard that we specify, we will pay the consortium, a pre-agreed sum every year for 25 years."
The consortium is also proposing to set up a 'Premier Park Foundation' to help fund activities and facilities.
Funding for the Foundation will be done by reinvesting a large portion of the Sports Hub's commercial revenues.
Ludwig Reichhold, MD, Dragages - Singapore Sports Hub Consortium, said: "The estimate of S$800 million was established sometime in 2005 at the time when the construction cost in Singapore was much lower than it is now, the current construction cost of S$1.2 billion is the combined result of the increase of materials and labour in Singapore over the past couple of year which has been quite steep."
But there is still much work to be done for the consortium before the deal is made final, among them sorting out the legal documentation and even fine tuning the design.
All the paperwork is expected to be completed by March.
After which the Consortium has to demolish the current National Stadium and complete the new complex by end 2011. - CNA/ir/ch

Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/
The 27th Southeast Asian Games is scheduled to be held in Singapore in 2013. The Games will be held at the new Singapore Sports Hub in Kallang, which replaces the old National Stadium & to be completed in 2012. This will be the fourth time in history & the first time in 20 years the country has held the games.
This was announced by the SEA Games Federation Council.
The biennial event is the region's premier sporting event involving 11 Southeast Asian countries.
At the 2005 SEA Games in Manila, Singapore finished with the best medal haul for an away game.
The Republic returned with 129 medals comprising 42 gold, 32 silver and 55 bronze medals.
But the best ever medal tally for Singapore was in 1993, when it last hosted the Games and amassed 164 medals overall, 50 of them gold.
Besides the '93 Games, Singapore has also played host to two other SEA Games, in 1973 and 1983.
The 2013 Games, to be staged at the new Sports Hub in Kallang, is expected to attract 8,000 overseas delegates, athletes and media representatives to Singapore. - CNA/ir
CharlieP July 28th, 2009, 10:22 PM Today the IRB announced Japan as the host of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Their bid proposed playing five games at the Singapore Sports Hub, although this proposal needs to be ratified by the IRB.

!. If Japan hosts a Rugby World Cup, then they cannot hold any games outside of the country. It would make Japan look like France when they hosted the 2007 Rugby WC.
2. The Singapore Sports Hub is drastically falling behind schedule (it is perhaps close to being cancelled) because of the economic crisis and may not be finished before the 2013 Southeast Asian Games.

SINGAPORE: After being stalled for nearly two years due to the global financial downturn, the Sports Hub project will finally kick into gear.
On Wednesday, the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) signed the contract with the Singapore Sports Hub Consortium to design, build, finance and operate the Sports Hub for the next 25 years on a 35-hectare site in Kallang.
Demolition of the National Stadium, which sits on the site, will begin in October, and the new facility will open its doors by April 2014.
The final construction cost is estimated to be $1.33 billion - which the Government will pay in annual payments.
No financing details were available following the midnight announcement.
"I am glad that we are ready to start construction of the Singapore Sports Hub," said Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, in a statement.
"It will be a fully integrated sports, leisure, entertainment and lifestyle hub for world-class events and community activities. The facilities will be accessible to the public and to top athletes to train and compete in. As part of the Greater Marina Bay masterplan, the Singapore Sports Hub will also contribute to the larger Government objective of re-positioning Singapore as a great place to work, live and play," he said.
When completed, the Sports Hub will include a 55,000-seat National Stadium with a retractable roof, a 6,000-seat indoor aquatics arena, about 41,000 square metres of business, commercial and retail space, and a sports institute.
Two new features of the Sports Hub are a bowl-cooling system and retractable seats for the main stadium.
The bowl cooling system features blowing treated air from chillers through holes in the tier below each seat.
There will also be a sports library and sports museum, as well as other amenities including a volleyball court, rock-climbing wall, hard courts, a skate park and state-of-the-art training and sports recovery facilities, among others.
The Sports Hub will also strive to attract live entertainment events, conventions and exhibitions, while 80 corporate boxes will be available for lease during major sporting events.
The deal between the Singapore Government and the consortium is the largest sports infrastructure public-private-partnership project in the world.

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan delivered the demolition cue where four excavators started to tear down the grandstand.
The “Grand Old Dame” of Singapore sports will make way for the Sports Hub which is expected to be completed by April 2014. To be built at an estimated cost of S$1.33 billion, the new facility will boast a 55,000-seater stadium with a retractable roof and comfort cooling for spectators, a 6,000-capacity Indoor Aquatic Centre, a 3,000-capacity Multi-Purpose Arena and a Water Sports Centre.
The Singapore Sports Hub Consortium (SSHC), led by Dragages Singapore Pte Ltd, was awarded the development of the Sports Hub project on January 19, 2008, under the Private-Public-Partnership (PPP) project. Under the PPP model, the Consortium will bring in their expertise in various aspects such as construction, financing and programming. The Singapore government will pay the consortium an annual payment, covering construction, operating and financing costs, over 25 years.
The new facility was initially planned for completion in 2011 but was delayed due to the 2008-2009 financial crisis and high construction costs.
SportsHub Consortium’s Ludwig Reichhold told Yahoo! Singapore he is confident that the new state-of-the-art facility will be delivered on schedule.
“This project, we have a lot of time to prepare and we have a big team working so there is no reason for further delay and I am very confident after 43 months, we will all be invited for the opening ceremony,” said the managing director of Dragages Singapore.
Singapore Sports Council chairman, Alex Chan, added that some positives could be taken from the initial delay as it gave the Sports Hub team more time to redefine its design.
“The team sorted out a lot of the technical concepts which were conceptually translated and there were a lot of refining, so that was a big plus for this project. We may be in a slightly different situation so it offered opportunities for two tests, one technical and the other financial so it is to my believe that we are in a much stronger shape both design and concept stand point,” he said.
Reichhold agreed, “We did not plan this [delay], we went through a construction boom in Singapore, we built the IRs and had a strong inflation in the financial crisis.”
“We had to cope with it and the positive thing is that we maintained the working relationship and kept this project alive even though it could have stopped because we couldn’t fulfill our obligations. The government could have gone for another round of procurement which could have lost 3 to 5 years so we found the best solution for everybody which was not easy.”
“The old National Stadium was an icon in its own right – where many of Singapore’s best memories were made. We can only aim to better this with the completion of what will be another national – and hopefully international – landmark, a place Singaporeans can look on with pride, and where everyone can do their part to create more lasting memories for Singapore.”
As a unique, multi-functional sports facility capable of supporting numerous major local and international events such as athletics, football, cricket, rugby and the National Day Parade, Global Spectrum Asia, a venue management company, is confident of attracting the crowds with a vibrant event mix. To date, a number of event organisers have already expressed interest.
“Major event organisers from Singapore representing different genres of entertainment are wanting to be the first Chinese act, first Western act… so for the opening of the facility, we’ll almost get to pick and choose. That’s the kind of recognition the facility is getting right now,” said Mark Collins, Global Spectrum Asia’s managing director.
World Sport Group’s chief operating officer, Andrew Georgiou, added that they will not rush into putting the events plan together.
“We’ve got time in front of us at the moment to create an events plan. The key for us is to make sure the event plan is diversified enough to allow us to engage every possible option at the venue. Our plan is to sit down with the Singapore Sports Council and the National Sports Associations and engage them in every possible opportunity to create a plan that does have a rhythm to it,” he said.

Sports fans Yahoo! Singapore spoke to were excited when told about the big plans for the new Sports Hub.
Said car salesman Jack Chan, 32, “The new design is really nice and I like the thought of being seated close to the football pitch and watching a match there.”
Property agent Mohd. Khairul, 28, agreed. “It’s been awhile since we last hosted a large scale sporting event at the National Stadium so I hope the Sports Hub will attract the best events to Singapore,” he said.
However, some were nostalgic when told about the demolition works at the ‘Grand Old Dame’.
“The National Stadium certainly brings back fond memories of sporting moments like the Malaysia Cup days to hosting concerts like Michael Jackson. It also hosted the late Pope John Paul II,” said retiree David Tay, 62.
Mohd Mokhtar, 45, agreed. “I am going to miss that place but I think more great things will be coming our way with the new Sports Hub,” he said.

Well, I guess they took the 55k cap as a safe gauge. From past experience, in recent years, the old National Stadium was never filled to its full capacity of 60k other than National Day. :)

True but our population is growing rapidly so i lso feel that they should have a bigger stadium. I'm sure they want to use it one day for the Asian Games!!

I doubt that. When we hosted the Youth Olympic Games, when our budget was $300 million for the whole event, there was a lot of complaints from the public.

$50,000 reward for missing National Stadium time capsule
Money will help motivate workers
By Koh Hui Theng October 11, 2010
Wanted: The "lost" time capsule in the National Stadium.
The reward? A whopping $50,000.
This is the prize awaiting the worker who unearths the time capsule, which remains missing after a massive search in 2007, when the stadium was first supposed to be torn down.
Now that the demolition of the stadium to make way for the $800 million Sports Hub has begun, it may be the last chance to find this piece of sporting history.
According to a director involved in the project, the $50,000 bounty was included in the contract agreement with Beng Soon Machinery Services, a sub-contractor taking part in the demolition.
There has been little publicity about the monetary offer as he wants to prevent treasure-seekers turning up at the site, which is closed to everyone except those involved in the project.

National Stadium demolition nearly complete
By Jason Tan, Seet Sok Hwee | Posted: 01 December 2010 1532 hrs
SINGAPORE: The demolition of Singapore's National Stadium is almost complete, with the work already into its final phase.
The West Entrance Grandstand is all that is left of Singapore's iconic structure, which has stood since 1973.
Demolition work began in September, and is now expected to be completed in March next year.
It will be immediately followed by the construction of the long-delayed Sports Hub - projected to be ready by April 2014.
Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan visited the site on Wednesday, to observe the demolition process.
The Sports Hub will replace the National Stadium as Singapore's premier land and sea sports, leisure and entertainment hub.
Demolition works affecting business
Some businesses at the Kallang Leisure Park said the closure of roads because of the demolition work is affecting their businesses.
With the school holidays, families may spend time at the skating rink but those who drive may have trouble finding the place.
Signs have been put up to re-direct vehicles from the work site, but business owners at the Park said this is insufficient.
Louis Lee, who is a business owner at Kallang Leisure Park, said it is a bit difficult for people to come in to find the location unless they travelled by train.
He said, "Arriving here is a bit difficult. There used to be three entrances to go in, now there's only one entrance from Mountbatten.
"We'd like the government or LTA to give a big signboard to let people find an easier way to come in. That's very important to us to improve our business here."

What will new stadium be called?
Sports Hub may sell naming rights of new 55,000-capacity arena
by Ian De Cotta
04:47 AM Apr 07, 2011
SINGAPORE - For 27 years it stood at Kallang and was simply known as the National Stadium. In the final few years before demolition work started last September to make way for the S$1.33 billion Sports Hub, many began to refer to Singapore sport's biggest stage as the "Grand Old Lady".
When the new 55,000-capacity stadium begins operations in March 2014, it could follow in the footsteps of world famous sports arenas like Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena and generate sizeable revenue by selling its naming rights.
Speaking to MediaCorp yesterday, Sports Hub chief executive officer, Mr Philippe Collin Delavaud, said: "We can work ... to develop various branding programmes ... and this includes co-branding our activities ... selling the naming rights to the stadium is one of them.
"What is important for the Sports Hub is to have reliable and long-term business partners. Every solution is looked at and we will decide with the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and our different partners on what is the best solution in terms of long-term partnership with brands."
The Arsenal-Emirates Airlines deal is reportedly worth £100 million (S$205 million) over 16 years for the Premiership club, while German Bundesliga side Bayern's 30-year contract with financial giants Allianz has netted it €90 million.
The stadium in Sydney built for the 2000 Olympics is now named the ANZ Stadium - after the bank - in a deal reportedly worth A$31.5 million (S$41.2 million) over seven years.
Some of the nation's biggest and best-known brands like Singapore Airlines, DBS, Great Eastern and SingTel could be attracted to such a deal.
The stadium, with a retractable roof, will be the centrepiece of the 35-hectare Sports Hub, the world's biggest public-private-partnership project (PPP).
It will include a 6,000-capacity aquatics arena, a 3,000-seater multi-purpose indoor stadium, a watersports centre and 41,000 sq m of business, commercial and retail floor space.
Former Singapore midfielder and Football Association of Singapore council member Leong Kok Fann feels that as the Hub is no longer exclusively a public project, commercial strategies should be expected.
"With the private sector element in it, raising sponsorship revenue and merchandising is a normal consequence of such an enterprise," said Mr Leong, who starred for the Lions in the 1980s.
"The income will help stage the kind of activities the Hub is supposed to generate. If it also helps to lift the standard of our sportsmen and women, and brings in top sports events, then I am all for the stadium to take on a commercial brand name."
But football icon V Sundramoorthy says the upcoming stadium cannot be compared with the likes of the homes of Arsenal and Bayern Munich.
The 45-year-old former striker said: "Those like the Emirates and the Allianz belong to clubs, but ours is built for the country and its name must reflect this."
The Sports Hub has generated worldwide interest, already bagging nine international awards.
Last Friday, it was named the PPP Deal of the Year at the Infrastructure Journal Awards 2010.
Singapore Sports Council's chief financial officer Goh Fang Min said the awards reflect the sound economics of the PPP - the only one in the world to contain multiple sports facilities.
"The awards reflect how we crafted the PPP contract and the financing for the project. It is done in such a way that the key terms need not have to be renegotiated over the next 25 years. The next step is for the consortium to work with us to deliver the programming aspect of the Hub.

Which company do you think has the best shot at a naming rights deal?
Mith252 April 12th, 2011, 12:41 AM ^^ Hmm, I feel that it could be SIA for me. However, being the national stadium they should instead be naming the stadium after a national icon. :)

Naming rights to stadium won't be sold
Letter from Eugene De Rozario Deputy Chief Operating Officer SportsHub Pte Ltd
04:46 AM Apr 15, 2011
We are writing in response to Mr Basil Yeo's letter "Should Sports Hub really be commercially branded?" (April 9-10) and would like to clarify the comments made in the article published on April 7, "What will new stadium be called?".
We would like to assure Mr Yeo and all Singaporeans that the SportsHub Pte Ltd will not sell the naming rights to the National Stadium.
From the beginning, all parties involved in the project have been in complete agreement that the name National Stadium would not be commercialised, and this position is reflected in the contract.
Nonetheless, naming rights to other facilities within the Sports Hub such as the Aquatics Centre, Multi-purpose Indoor Arena and Water Sports Centre may be considered for commercial branding, subject to Singapore Sports Council's review and consent.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Yeo for his interest and support for the upcoming Sports Hub which, when completed in April 2014, will provide the community with a world class venue for local, regional and international sporting events and activities.

Mith252 May 11th, 2011, 12:57 PM ^^At most, it would be used for the SEA Games. When Singapore was chosen for the Youth Olympics, which happened last year, it pretty much says that Singapore won't be hosting the Summer Olympics.

Lord David July 19th, 2011, 11:29 AM ^^ Err, well I don't think Singapore would be hosting Olympics anytime soon. The idea is to have a waterfront view.
Perhaps the pride and glory shouldn't be an Olympics, but maybe an Asian Games?
Mith252 July 22nd, 2011, 01:14 PM ^^ That would be better idea I guess but it is up to the government if they want to do it.

MS20 September 1st, 2011, 04:07 PM What events will the stadium hold? Singapore national football team and Rugby 7's? Can't seem to find the info in this thread.
Mith252 September 2nd, 2011, 12:34 AM ^^ Likely to be the case. It would also hold the country's National Day Parade. Right now, nothing much has been confirmed by the contractors tasked to build the stadium. :)

Jericho-79 September 4th, 2011, 03:04 AM Will this new stadium be called "Sports Hub Stadium" or "New Singapore National Stadium"?
Just curious.:?
Mith252 September 4th, 2011, 08:11 AM ^^ It is not known yet. It could be either of the choices stated. We have another 3 years before it opens so I am sure the government would have a lot of time to consider the different names. :)

The piling and foundation of the new National Stadium is done and the construction team will now concentrate on its superstructure
SINGAPORE: Singapore Sports Hub has completed its first phase of construction.
The piling and foundation of the new National Stadium is done and the construction team will now concentrate on its superstructure.
The construction team has ensured all the rubble from the old National Stadium and the car parks and roads surrounding it is recycled to retain its heritage.
The recycled material currently serves as bases for roads and working platforms for the heavy machinery required on site and will be incorporated into the foundation of the new development eventually.
Meanwhile, the football pitch is currently undergoing accelerated settlement to prepare for the next phase of construction.
The new stadium will be able to accommodate as many as 55,000 people.
The Sports Hub will be an integrated sports, entertainment and lifestyle hub and it will be in operation in April 2014.

More developments ahead for facilities around Sports Hub: SSC
By Patwant Singh | Posted: 04 November 2011 2148 hrs
SINGAPORE: There will be more sports-related developments around the upcoming Sports Hub. This was revealed to the media in a briefing by the Singapore Sports Council on Vision 2030.
The initiative was announced recently to develop sports from the ground up, with the aim of getting the public involved.
The council said feedback has been collated into three main thrusts - using sports to be future ready, as a means of community bonding, and to ignite the passion of the people as a nation.
One of the proposals is to expand sports facilities around the Sports Hub, which is expected to be completed by April 2014. These include facilities like a mid-sized stadium and a tennis academy.
Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Mr Chan Chun Sing, said: "We are now in the process of consolidating those ideas, organising those ideas and trying to also prioritise some of those ideas, so that we can have a roadmap worked out for the coming few years with a longer term vision in mind.
"What we can expect is by the time the budget debates is done next year, probably early part of next year, we will have the preliminary proposals ready for public consumption."

SEA Games: Hard work begins now for 2015 Games, says minister

Singapore Sports Hub
SINGAPORE: Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Chan Chun Sing, says the hard work begins now to get Singapore ready to host the SEA Games in 2015.
This involves preparing athletes, mobilising volunteers and organisers, and ensuring that the infrastructure is up to mark.
Mr Chan, who is an MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an inter-generational carnival held in his constituency.
He said he is also confident that the Kallang SportsHub, where the Games will be staged, will be ready on time.
"We are quietly confident, because in 12 months' time, the same time next year, we would probably see the dome of the stadium up and once that milestone is reached, then we would have passed a critical milestone.
"But then like all things in Singapore, we always have a plan B in the event of any hiccups in the construction of the stadium. So no worries, we will make sure that we put up a good show, with Singaporeans and for Singaporeans," he said.
Mr Chan added that other venues will also need to be refurbished.
He said Singapore is in discussion with the SEA Games Federation on the events to be conducted, and new venues to hold them may be explored.
"For example, if cycling comes about, then we have to see which are the venues where we can hold such things," he said.
He added that "as far as possible, I think we want this to be a Games not just for the athletes, but for the whole Singapore, for all Singaporeans to come together to celebrate and to play an active part in the Games. That's really the main reason why we want the Games here in Singapore."
Mr Chan later joined his fellow Tanjong Pagar MPs and 1,500 residents in a pizza decorating competition.

4thDimension August 10th, 2012, 02:24 AM Excuse me, can I know about the main stadium's feature, apart from the capacity?
I worked on the design team. What would you like to know?
4thDimension August 10th, 2012, 02:32 AM The stadium is a 55,000 capacity stadium with underseat cooling.
The field is capable of hosting a variety of sports due to the fact that the lower tier of seating is retractable.
The span of the roof is over 300m, and the support nodes for the roof dome are restrained by a tension ring 2m deep by 6m wide that is continuous around the stadium(as can be seen in the above photos).
There will also be an Aquatic centre, a badminton hall, a gymnastics hall, a skate park, office space, shopping areas, a museum, and masses of parking (underground and multilevel aboveground to the north of the stadium). There is also an open water (rowing, dragonboat etc) area to the west of the stadium.
I'm most interested in seeing the moving roof, the moving seating tiers and the underseat cooling working.
What else can I tell you?
DC33 August 12th, 2012, 12:55 PM Is the undercooking served by cooled conditioned air or just provide air movement to provide thermal comfort? Is there a rainwater harvesting system? Pls upload pictures of the roof frame structure as it progresses. :)The stadium is a 55,000 capacity stadium with underseat cooling.

It is cooled air delivered through a void beneath the precast seating planks. I'm not sure exactly how the air is cooled (I just worked on the layout and structure), but it is definitely air conditioned. The intention is to create an 'envelope' of cooled air that surrounds the crowd, whilst 10m above them the air is natural.
I'm sorry but I don't work on the site anymore so I can't provide pics, I worked on the design team up until the demolition of the old stadium began.

That's what I questioning about. 55000 Seats in Football Mode or Minimum capacity before it's moving?

Sorry, but I'm not actually sure, I think that it is 55,000 seats at full capacity (football mode), so that would be reduced slightly (perhaps to 50,000) in athletics mode. The stadium can hold more than 55,000, however seating is only provided for 55,000.

SINGAPORE: Working, playing and training together could be the future for a number of National Sports Associations (NSAs) when the S$1.33-billion Sports Hub officially opens its doors in April 2014.
As the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) mulls over options to house the different sports at its Kallang facilities, which include the 55,000-capacity National Stadium, a 3,000-seater multi-purpose indoor aquatic centre, the Singapore Sports Institute, a multi-purpose arena and a water sports centre, it is also thinking of making these NSAs share various services.
While details of the relocation plans have not been finalised, TODAY understands that the SSC's tentative proposal includes an open concept office for the NSAs, who could also share a secretariat, office equipment and supplies, to encourage interaction and the sharing of best practices.
At present, NSAs' secretariat staff provide finance, administrative, high performance, marketing and sponsorship services.
The proposal for the NSAs will also complement the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and the SSC's strategy - which is part of the Sports Facilities Masterplan - to transform the Kallang area into a sports city with major sporting, lifestyle and entertainment events.
The sports city concept will also incorporate a tennis academy and new centre court. TODAY also learnt that the Singapore Sports School could be moving from its Woodlands campus to Kallang in future.
Said Bob Gambardella, SSC chief of Sports Development Group, in response to TODAY's queries: "The SSC has allocated space in the Sports Hub for the NSAs. We have engaged the NSAs via focus group sessions to gather their thoughts on the proposed move and will continue to work closely with them to finalise relocation plans for those who are keen to move to the Sports Hub.
"We are looking at housing NSAs which have the best fit in relation to the types of training and competition facilities. We are also looking at the synergies that can be tapped by co-locating the identified NSAs."
While some NSAs welcomed cost-cutting ideas such as the shared services, others were concerned about issues such as rental cost and the logistics of working in an open plan office.
Said Bobby Lee, chief executive officer of the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA): "The idea is good from the angle of economies of scale, greater interaction amongst the various NSAs and learning best practices from peers. However, there are issues of privacy and security that need to be addressed.
"From the SBA's angle, we raised a few points, such as the proximity of our office to the training hall, instead of the main open office, our requirement of a store room for our equipment and dormitories for the players.
"Rental rates are also a concern and we hope that the current Annual National Sports Association Grant Exercise funding will increase to cover any increase in the facilities rental and operational costs."
Rental and revenue would be a factor for the Singapore Canoe Federation, as its president Chua Kee Huat said on Tuesday: "We are a small NSA and are very conscious about the kind of expenses we incur. Our NSA is also more unique in that we depend on offering programmes and courses to the public and affiliates to generate income, and we are not sure if we will be able to do that at the Sports Hub (water sports centre). It's still unclear so we will have to wait."
Others like Netball Singapore were more concerned about the feasibility of working together in an open space with other sports.
"Our feedback to the SSC is that we would prefer a small office partition for privacy rather than a big office space," said Cyrus Medora, its executive director. "It (shared services) would definitely help the smaller NSAs, but maybe not for the bigger ones that already have a secretariat."

This guy is an idiot.
Cricket is totally kick-ass - Singapore should start to play more - get into it man - its a brilliant game tht many of your asian ex colonial affiliates play with unashamed joy, and its thrilling, to spite what this numbnuts says! - pity this stadium couldnt fit the dimensions of a cricket field into it. Perhaps Rugby 7's like in Hong Kong??

Physical constraints will not make Olympics in Sg possible; unless partner with another very nearby city that is of certain scale and having the necessary infrastructure. But which one.....?

Well, it's not really as if the Olympics was always in one city :) When it was in Moscow, games were played in Kyiv - that's quite a stretch, isn't it? I think this wouldn't be a major problem for SG, should the country actually apply. If FIFA can give a WC to Qatar, I cannot see why Singapore should be excluded :)

That's a valid point as well...Qatar is about 15 times larger than Singapore in terms of size comparison though. :)

Sure thing, but please have a look where games are to be played - Doha, then Doha, then Doha, and there's Doha, Doha with Doha as an addition. And various outskirts of Doha to make it even more diverse. ;)

In Progress: Singapore Sports Hub / Arup
Construction has commenced on the world’s largest dome roof at Singapore’s National Stadium. Once completed in 2014, the Arup-designed structure will provide shelter to the 55,000 seat stadium and surrounding ticketed community spaces in the heart of the 35ha sports precinct. Singapore’s National Stadium will be the only stadium in the world, custom-built to host football, rugby, cricket and athletic events in one venue.

Operator may sell naming rights to facilities in Sports Hub
By S Ramesh | Posted: 06 February 2013 1556 hrs
SINGAPORE: Under the contract with the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), the commercial operator may sell the naming rights to individual facilities within the Sports Hub, except for the National Stadium.
However, any sale of naming rights within the Sports Hub is still subject to SSC's consent.
The aim is to strike a balance between preserving the character of Singapore's national icons and allowing sports to benefit from corporate sponsorship.
Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong said this in Parliament on Wednesday in response to questions from Nominated MP, Assistant Professor Eugene Tan, on the policy on naming rights.
Mr Wong said: "We would certainly be considering naming the facilities which could take the name of our public figures or sports personalities. We are prepared to consider the suggestion and that is provided for within the context of the Sports Hub. Not all of the naming rights have been sold or are part of the agreement with the operator. The government can decide to so name in a different manner."
The Sports Hub is being developed under a 25-year public-private-partnership (PPP) agreement where a commercial operator undertakes to finance, build and operate the entire project in return for a pre-agreed payment and a share of the overall revenue.
Part of the revenue from the operation of the Sports Hub, which would include revenue from the sale of naming rights, may be used to pay for future improvements in facilities, events and shows, as well as to fund community events and support the development of athletes.
On whether a local bank is in discussions with the sports operator on the naming rights, Mr Wong said any interested party can approach the Sports Hub operator and let it know it is interested in a sponsorship deal with naming rights for a particular facility.
He said the Sports Hub operator has been talking to many parties,.
He added that while the media may have speculated about a deal with one local bank, that doesn't mean only one party is interested.

It looks like 2/3 done from my angle (bldg on north-east of the pic), but seems only slightly more than half by aerial view.

Yep, the lowest tier isn't there yet :) It wasn't done yet because the steel supports of the dome (red) need to stand there until the dome becomes self-supporting.
You can clearly see it here:
