Yup, it's quite near the City Hall. Sa likod na dapit sa Balanghai Hotel., pero facing siya adtung Doongan road nga residential area na.

the U/C Multi-Purpose building is only about 100 meters away from the U/C DPWH. Naglinya ra sila.

Actually, if you go to the site, it's relatively big. Sayang nga lang I wasn't able to capture the whole area. As for the structure, obviously, they've only started with the steel works, baka half side palang tu ng building ,who knows. But we'll see, let's give it time. Two weeks from now, I'll try to get more shots for an update :)

P300-million banana plantation investment set in Butuan
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
July 1, 2010, 5:17pm
Manila Bulletin

BUTUAN CITY – A proposed P300-million banana plantation investment is set to boost the economic activity in this city in the Caraga region, officials said Thursday.

Officials of the Butuan city government said a boom in banana production will be a big boost to the local economy and nearby areas.

Butuan will focus on economic investments to make it more progressive and globally competitive city in northeastern Mindanao, Dr. Ferdinand Amante, Jr. said during his address before leaders of the business community and officials of the city government on Wednesday.

“Let us improve our economy with the help of our partner investors,” Amante said.

“They will invest here not only to earn but above all they want to help turn around our economy,” the new chief executive of the city said.

Earlier, in a radio interview, Amante mapped out poverty eradication strategies.

He announced the coming in of some big companies such as banana plantation growers, agricultural and soft drinks companies and other investors, both foreign and domestic.

He said a company is already eyeing a 300-hectare banana plantation in Barangay Cabcabon in this city.

Amante also called on other newly inducted officials and all workers in the city government to help him plan poverty eradication strategies in uplifting the economic condition of the poor people who are still living below poverty line despite the city's seemingly "progressive physical" appearance that the new commercial buildings along the national highway seem to project.

Looking at the challenge to combat poverty, the new city chief executive urged his fellow government officials to join hands and design action programs "that will improve productivity of farms to increase income and provide food for the table."

He also called for capacity-building trainings and financial assistance programs to provide employment to the poor.

"I am enjoining our barangay leaders to spearhead this task in their respective barangays," Amante said.

He also pointed out the need to come up with health strategies by cleaning up all esteros, drainage, canals and other eyesores that endanger the health of Butuanons.

The new city chief executive also vowed to upgrade the immediate needs of the Butuan Medical Center.

Investing on healthcare and social welfare systems is one of the mechanisms that Amante has identified to arrest poverty in Butuan.

“Our focus is anti-poverty, a pro-poor agenda that would pave the way for poverty reduction and make direct investments to benefit poor families. Good health, more investments is our foundation for growth," Amante said Officials said the city government will conduct a review and streamline the operations of various departments in the city government.

The Amante administration will try to save money and enhance development resources for progress in this region’s capital city.

Meanwhile, the nearby new city of Cabadbaran expects a boost in economic activity as the Cabadbaran Fruits Corporation is expanding their banana plantation. The banana firm has started production of their 300-hectare cavendish plantation.

The company is also planning the establishment of another 2,000-hectare plantation in nearby Sibagat town, in Agusan del Sur province.

A Banana Cluster composed of banana producers of Cavendish, Cardava, Latundan and Lakatan, banana chips processors and traders in the Caraga region are planning to have 10,000 hectares of banana plantation in the next five years at various areas in the region, said Region Xlll Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Regional Director Brielgo O. Pagaran.

Chinese geologists start first RP geochem mapping
06/14/2010 | 05:03 PM

Surveyors from China are now in the Philippines to do the first in a series of geochemical mapping of copper and nickel deposits in the country.

“We’ve entered into an agreement with our Chinese counterpart for the conduct of a more scientific exploration. Whatever we will yield maybe used as initial data for the exploration of mining companies," said Edwin Domingo, director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

Filipino geologists and engineers are now working with 12 of their Chinese counterparts for the mapping activity that will take three years to complete, according to a memorandum of agreement the MGB signed with China Geological Survey.

The project would focus on what had already been identified as possible nickel and copper deposits in the Visayas and Northern Mindanao, and would start in the provinces of Surigao and Agusan.

“Once we have identified areas with vast potential of mineral resource, it will be easy now to spur investments in the minerals industry," Domingo said.

Nickel and copper prices are expected to surge as economies recover from the global recession, fueling demand while stockpiles are declining across the globe, according to the MGB.

Nickel prices nosedived to $1.70 per pound last year, following sharp declines in the consumption of base metals. Prices started to rebound starting late last year. At present, nickel is trading at an average of $9.05 a pound.

Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange gained up to 1.1 percent to $6,550 a metric ton. It was trading at $6,540 during the Monday’s morning session in Singapore, while copper for July-delivery was trading at $2.943 a pound.

China’s demand for the red metal remains strong as domestic inventories fell for six successive weeks to the lowest in nearly four months. —VS, GMANews.TV

New Butuan leadership vow to develop tourism by focusing Balangay boats’ feat, history

July 2, 2010 1:08 pm

http://balita.ph/2010/07/02/new-butuan-leadership-vow-to-develop-tourism-by-focusing-balangay-boats-feat-history/#more-49195

BUTUAN CITY, July 2 — Admitting the fledging local tourism industry needs help, new Butuan City Mayor vowed to rescue it by focusing more on the historic Balangay boats' feat while trying hard to make Butuan as “haven of historical tourism”

“Yes we are determined to develop our local tourism anchor in the historic feat of our Balangay boats” says new Butuan Mayor Ferdinand Amante when asked his agenda on the city’s tourism industry.

Amante admitted during a press conference here held right after he took oath of office that the city’s tourism industry has still long way to go in terms of needed infra support services, promotion and absence of well-organized local marketing strategy.

The lack of local residents’ full and comprehensive support for local tourism has also been noted saying even local people’s enthusiasm to visit local historic and tourism sites is totally absent.

As Amante answered queries on how to promote local tourism at the press conference, Butuan Global Forum and partners from both local private and government institutions were preparing for the launching of the “3rd Balangay Boat” and its two-day river cruise tour set on July 10-11.

The river cruise will start at the historic but already full of floating illegally-cut logs Agusan River.

The third boat LEPA will join two earlier expeditions made by two Balangay boat replicas named “Masawa Hong Butuan”, the second boat and “Diwata Ng Lahi”, the first, which will start with several stops in Mindanao before proceeding to an Asian tour.

The construction of the wind-driven boat Masawa Hong Butuan worth P1.6 million was shouldered by the Butuan Global Forum Inc., an association of Butuanons based locally and abroad; the Kaya Ng Pinoy Foundation; and the Butuan Historical and Cultural Foundation Inc.

The two replicas of Balangay boats, all wind-driven, sailed February 2 and February 4, 2010 respectively.

According to Butuanon Banker Agnes Andaya who is over-all chairperson of the project dubbed “The Continuing Balangay Journey” under auspices of Butuan Global Forum Incorporated, Kaya Natin Pinoy Foundation and other private and government institutions, the third boat will be engine driven”.

The third Balangay Boat river cruise project was aim to generate funds for the allowance and expenses of local navigators mostly Butuanons who will served as crew for the third Balangay Boat expedition, Andaya said.

The river cruise scheduled July 10 and 11 will pass the historic town of Magallanes, Agusan del Norte which is claiming as the real venue of the fist Christian mass in the country, the reason why it was named “Magallanes” referring to Ferdinand Magellan.

The river cruise will also pass other historical landmarks along Agusan River where the “Golden Tara” an ancient image made of gold was found by Manobo tribes sometime in the 60’s.

During launching of the LEPA Balangay Boat’s river cruise and voyage on July 9, 2010 to be held at Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) grounds here in Butuan City, several activities including mini concert by local bands were also scheduled.

Butuan folk consider the vessel meaningful after remnants of around eight ancient balangay boats were excavated in Butuan City particularly in Barangay Libertad in 1978.

The oldest boat that was dug was carbon-dated at 320 AD.(PNA)

Hello @sel_donz. Welcome to BXU thread :)

Robinson's reportedly to begin construction this year or early 2011 to its newly acquired lot beside 2GO in JC Aquino Avenue.

As for SM, we heared that SM management is also keen on investing in Butuan ( as posted by xzibit31 @ Phil.Projects on the Rise, SM Gensan thread)

Pics below shows the Rob's second tarp placed in their Bonbon property site. while the other tarp placed facing JCAA was accidentally removed during the election clean-up.

::

sige pa daw buy ug adjacent land ang Robinsons...I think enough na ang size ng property nila...they should not buy more land that they could not fully develop..instead they should start building up the mal ASAP.. before SM makes its final entry

sana magkaagree ang sm mgt at sanchez group sa pricing ng lupa, di masyadong mahal for the sm side, di naman masyadong barat for the sanchez group, para tuloy ang sm city butuan ,

Thanks for the info Bob!. So, namali jud diay akong classmate pag point out.. kay atbang ra man diay... It's a huge property indeed! It could probably an SM City... not SM Sari Sari store matud pa ni Mr. B... mao ra nang tawhana.. ang byahedor kuno... namaligya cguro nag buwad nga law law... kataw anan man nang tawhana wui... mura man og nakabalik og grade 1 section G.

Hayahay diha ang atbang sa maong property if SM will finally build their mall. Property near by will surely increase the price... :)

Reg, this is the property in Ampayon that SM Prime is scouting. This is now cleared and fenced property is under BP Management.

very big ang property, I think twice the size of that Robinson's property in Libertad

Peak within your reach
By Paul John A. Vesagas, RN, RM

Saturday, July 3, 2010

http://74.124.194.219/cagayan-de-oro/peak-within-your-reach

NINE years ago she had a dream. She had a vision. She wanted to mold individuals to become not just professional nurses but also as successful ones.

Fueled with humility and an innate personality to care for others’ welfare and future, Marivic Yamit, a registered nurse and a registered midwife by professions, had decided to go into the Review Center business.

Being among the pioneering nurse entrepreneurs in the city and probably the whole region, under her notable management skills and natural inclination to serve, Miss Marivic was able to produce a number of nurse and teacher board “topnotchers” for the past nine years in the business.

Just last year, she was able to produce the First Placer board topnotcher for the December 2009 Nurse Licensure examination in the person of Claire Bontol of Iligan Medical College.

The products of her well-managed review center had become the training ground and beehive of future top-caliber lecturers. Some of her previous students have even become nurse-entrepreneurs, managing their own review centers and are resident lecturers at present.

Believing that she could serve more and create more promising professionals in the fields of nursing and education, Miss Marivic has decided to open her own review centers with branches here in Cagayan de Oro and Butuan City by the first quarter of this year. She baptized her review center as PEAK: Excellence Training Academy.
Miss Marivic, as I had known her personally and witnessed her strong personality, is like Cagayan de Oro’s iron butterfly. She is like a mother surrogate in taking care of her reviewees to the point of not hesitating in getting medicines from her own purse to give to her reviewees who are ill.

Meanwhile, her line- up of excellent resident lecturers include Lani Roa, Christine Tongco, Marieto Austin Paasa, Rosario Lei Pasimio, Claire Bontol, Crystal Sabela, Cyrille Cahoy, Ernesto Elsisura Jr., Hernessa Hernandez, Michael Ray Ungab, Raul Andre Nacaytuna, Paul Delfin Jamero, Jimmy Salcedo, Ryan Lumor, Randel Dalalita, Romeo Chavez, Ivy Lou Bahian and Ailyn Monawara.

PEAK is manned by dedicated staff Temy Yamit, Tricia Maggiorina Tongco, Juneval Villano, Herbert Yamit, Jay Jadap, Dicky Macababayao, Aureo Gulay and Ogie Tabasan of the Cagayan de Oro branch and Lorde Rey Yamit, Myrna Gomera, Genofil Embalsado and Harvey Jabiniar of the Butuan branch.

It is the first biggest Shopping Center in Butuan. When the owners decided to expand it into a Mall, the name Otis Metro was changed to OTIS Mall.

OTIS Mall though only a two Storey building has 2 Escalators. It houses 2 cinemas, an Entertainment Area, a Department Store, Grocery with Wet Market, Hardware, Rose Pharmacy, Bakery, an array of Shops, Boutiques, souveniers,Cafes, a Foodcourt, A DIMSUM Resto ( A Franchise from Davao), an ATM Machine of DBP is available near the Parking area, etc..etc...

At that time nga hapit na sila malugi, they were still able to continue their operation by occupying only the half portion of their building & maintained their Department Store, Grocery, Hardware & Bakery until late 2008 when they finally closed :ohno:

Here's how OTIS MALL looks like on their first year or two of being a "MALL"

BUT now, their Mall looks like this na :ohno: (pics below)

Economic growth in 2009, notably seen in Agusan del Norte

By Robert E. Roperos

Butuan City (5 July) -- A province's economy is measured by the total goods and services it generates, "and last year was exceptional because despite difficulties, the sector still posted notable accomplishments," thus said Agusan del Norte Governor Erlpe John Amante when he reported recently his 6th State of the Province Address (SOPA) before a crowd estimate of 2,500 held at the covered court of the Provincial Capitol here.

Last year, Gov. Amante said, the accomplishment of the sector was 54% over targets. Export sales reached $3.25 million during the year in review while domestic sale was Php 36.6 million. "Agusan del Norte was able to generate investments amounting to Php 622.4 million resulting to the creation of 6,491 jobs," Amante said.

Also, Amante emphasized that income augmentation projects which the province has implemented included PCA's Participatory Coconut Planting where farmers were encouraged to plant coconuts an in return, they were given incentives. "Out of the program, over 21,400 seedlings were planted and P322 thousand was paid to farmers," he said.

To further spur productivity, the province was able to implement various projects under the Caraga Integrated Development Program. The program covered post harvest facilities like farm to market roads, machinery and equipment totaling P16.27 million.

Similarly, six projects costing Php 14.2 million were implemented under the Mindanao Rural Development Program. These economic pump priming programs were further enhanced by the construction of 82 accessibility and transport projects, categorized as Public Buildings, Roads and Bridges and environmental sustaining projects, which costs a total of Php 483 million

guys, the Magsaysay Bridge is now completely closed to all kinds of traffic...

closing the old bridge for a major repair gave eastbound city dwellers a glimpse of the vastness of the city's southern part..where developments are very evident....two passengers I was traveling with in the jeep I over heard commented .." paspas lagi nausab dire..asenso lag kalit "

its good to hear that local residents are beginning to feel the effects of positive developments

You're right BOB. Butuanons will finally get to see the developments in South Montilla Boulevard & appreciate as you say, the vastness of our City, PLUS this will probably be the first time for some Butuanons to see the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge up close.

Ang uban man gud especially kanang mga nag labay-labay lang sa Butuan, thought nga ang atong City hangang JC Aquino Ave. & North Montilla blvd lang. Ang di nila alam, we also have South Montilla Blvd na mas mahaba pa sa North montilla

IMO South montilla Blvd should be SM's location

yup ateBunny...the importance of the new bridge is highlighted here as more and more Butuanons will be using it starting today..

for a local resident, the new DM Bridge is "a place for hang out, pahangin"...."tourist spot"...or a few cynics and pessimists would find it synonymous with "a billlion peso utang"

but we shall see this part of the city....the new DM bridge, the South Supermarket and Terminal....the new paved Butuan-Las Nieves-Esperanza Highway as the cataclysts for further growth of the city's booming south

I would agree too ateBunny that South Montilla Blvd. or the new highway is a more fitting location for a development such as SM...where population growth is faster owing to the growing number of residential subdivisions around it than that of Ampayon...

Construction of $1.3-billion coal-fired power plant in Surigao underway
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
July 5, 2010, 4:37pm

TAGANITO, Surigao del Norte – Economic boom is expected in this town as the construction of the $1.3 billion coal-fired plant here is already in full swing, it was learned Monday.

Adding to the burgeoning economic activity here is the hiring of some 4,000 construction workers as the implementation of the Sumitomo Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation’s coal-fired plant went into high gear Monday.

The company is also set to hire at least 1,000 employees and workers as the mining firm will start operation after completing the construction of the power plant.

The construction of the company’s coal-fired power plant here started on March 1 this year and is expected to be fully-operational by April 2013.

It was learned that the Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation is one of the biggest mining firms erected in the Caraga Region.

“This company is a big boost to our local economy,” said Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Caraga Regional Director Brielgo O. Pagaran.

The Caraga Region’s DTI chief added that more income will be generated while producing more employment opportunities for the local residents.

Meanwhile, in the nearby town of Claver, a booming mining industry is also noted.

Claver Mayor Rosemarie Mira-Gokiangkee said these mining companies situated in her town has uplifted the lives of her constituents.

“With vast mineral resources, presence of multi-million-dollar mining companies and the opening of the largest mine refinery in this town and nearby areas, the town of Claver will surely experience a surge in economic activity which will eventually hasten development and progress in the area,” said Gokiangkee.

The town’s local chief executive gave assurance that once the mine refinery will be opened soon, Clavernons will be given the first priority during the hiring of workers.

Of the 64 mining companies in the Caraga Region, Surigao del Norte and the province of Dinagat Islands have at least 33 mining companies currently operating at various areas in the province.

At present, at least 10,000 employment opportunities have been generated by these mining companies spread all over the Caraga Region since 2007, the region’s mines and geosciences bureau also reported

DPWH Butuan implements temporary closure of Magsaysay Bridge

Butuan City (6 July) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways - Butuan City District Engineering Office will be implementing the Rehabilitation of Magsaysay Bridge Along Butuan City & Cagayan-Iligan City Road.

This project should have commenced on March 23, 2010, but the Sanggunian of the City of Butuan proposed that the same will be moved and will take effect on June 1, 2010 due to the activities/celebration and preparations for the conduct of the May 10, 2010 elections.

Upon the execution of the public work, there will be a temporary closure of the said Magsaysay Bridge to all motorists effective on July 6, 2010. The temporary closure will be for a period of not less than three (3) months, but not more than four (4) months reckoned from June 1, 2010.

There will be a detour/rerouting of motorists passing through the Bridge. The detour will start from junction Tiniwisan Road to Macapagal Bridge, then an exit through Montilla Blvd, and vice versa.

All vehicles will not be allowed to pass through the Bridge and shall have the STOP POINTS, namely: (1) from the east, the viaduct approaching Magsaysay Bridge, and (2) from the west, on Marcos Calo St. at the foot of the bridge.

Pedestrians will be allowed to pass through the bridge and shall provided with sidewalk on both side/ways of the bridge.

Furthermore, road signs and signages will be installed on the strategic areas before approaching the bridges to advice and guidance to the motorists and pedestrians of the ongoing public work. (DPWH-Butuan DEO/PIA Caraga

Confrontation that never came

by Cecil Ybañez III

Butuan City (6 July) -- The 12th Sangguniang Panglungsod of Butuan City made their inaugural session last July 5, 2010. There was 100% attendance of 10 newly elected SP members, President of the Association of Barangay Captains, and the President of the Sangguniang Kabataan federation.

It was also jampacked with people from different sectors, kibitzers and media practitioners who were so excited for the outcome of the said first session.

Many of those who attended were expecting a confrontation between the new administration councilors (5) and the opposition councilors (7), especially that, one of the agenda was the assigning of the different committee chairmanship and also the revision of some provisions in their so-called HOUSE RULES.

But to the pleasure of those who attended the said session, the expected confrontation, never came. Thanks to the able handling and show of good leadership of Vice-Mayor Lawrence Lemuel Fortun.

A controversial resolution of the House rules of the previous administration that deprived members of the then opposition councilors (Dano and Fortun) the chairmanship of at least one committee was revised thus giving all members of the 12th Sangguniang Panglungsod the privilege of getting at least one committee chairmanship.

What makes or adds color to the session was the statesmanship act shown by the Hon. Jaime "Dodo" Cembrano. In his privilege speech, he publicly relinquished his chairmanship of the Committee on Transportation and Utility to Hon. Audie Bernabe. An act that makes many of those present admire Hon. Cembrano since this is the first time they witnessed such act of a true and real statesman.

The atmosphere was so pleasant that even the announcement of the approved appointment of the new lady City Administrator was met with no resistance from the opposition.

This smooth inaugural session should be seen as a positive forecast and a great promise of a good partnership among members of the 12th Sangguniang Panglungsod of Butuan City.

Kudos to able leadership of Vice Mayor Lawrence Lemuel Fortun and the statesmanship act of Hon. Jaime Cembrano. (PIA-Caraga)

DILG Caraga to conduct region's CDEx
By Robert E. Roperos

Butuan City (5 July) -- The Regional Office here of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will schedule a Capacity Development Exposition (CDEx) on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 10:00 in the morning in one of the local convention centers here, showcasing the department's undertakings which enables the local government units to come up with their own capacity development agenda.

In a press statement sent to PIA, DILG-Caraga Regional Director, Atty. Rene K. Burdeos stressed that the activity also paves the way for other regional line agencies, local institutions and foreign donors to present their capacity interventions to complement the LGU's CapDev Agenda.

It can be recalled that the Local Government Academy of the department held its National CDEx earlier in March this year at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Pasig City.

The CDEx activity highlighted the capacity development agenda of the local government units as tools to address their performance and bridge competency gaps.

During the national activity, it was agreed that a regional CDEx will also be conducted after the May 2010 elections, thus the regional CDEx of Caraga was conceptualized and be implemented during that day.

After the activity in the morning, a press conference is set on the afternoon of that same day. (PIA-Caraga)

guys I was able to see the press conference of the mayor...it was disclosed that a big Chinese industrialist by the name of Jack Wong (who was also at the presscon) will be investing in electric car components plant as well as real estate company in the city.

it was also learned for a plan to convert the Regional center in Tiniwisan into a tourism/hotel/convention facility...and as an IT Park...

the Pepsi Cola plan to put up a bottling plant was reiterated..but it was also learned that Coca Cola will no longer be building their factory but is keen on making Butuan a distribution hub in Mindanao

Butuan is already a distribution hub of COKE for Caraga. In a way that CDO, IGN, OZC, ZAM, GES, etc. are in their respective areas. There is nothing significant in the response of coke.

I remember, Butuan is a PEPSI country when their bottling plant was still operational. Now, i bet it will be one again once it will build a bottling plant again.

Sa ngayon pa lang dapat PEPSI products na ato ipromote. Unless COKE will finally put up a bottling plant.

Agusan Norte eyeing P1-billion investment
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
July 4, 2010, 3:01pm

CABADBARAN CITY, Agusan del Norte – The provincial government of Agusan del Norte has mobilized its resources to generate investment amounting to at least P1 billion.

Re-elected and newly elected officials of Agusan del Norte envisioned to generate 7,000 to 8,000 jobs before the end of this year and next year.

They started mapping out priority development programs, activities and projects that can be implemented to hit their target goal.

Last year, export sales in the province reached $3.25 million during the year in review while domestic sale was P36.6 million.

Agusan del Norte was able to generate investment amounting to P622.4 million resulting to the creation of at least 6,491 jobs.

To further spur productivity and to hit their target, Agusan del Norte Gov. Erlpe John M. Amante, the provincial legislative board and mayors mobilized all various projects under the Caraga Integrated Development Program (CIDP).

The program covered post harvest facilities like farm-to-market roads, machinery and equipment.

The provincial government also focused on the on-going implementation of projects under the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP).

“These economic pump-priming programs will further enhance the construction of 82 accessibility and transport projects, categorized as public buildings, roads and bridges, and environmental sustaining projects,” said Amante.

The provincial chief executive is requesting anew with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the release of P200 million for farm-to-market roads along the western municipalities of Buenavista, Nasipit and Carmen, saying it “will also make active players in generating more investment, income, livelihood and full economic development of the province.”

Meanwhile, the passage of the “Investment Code” and “Environmental Code” by the good partnership of the executive and legislative branches of the provincial government has also boosted several provincial and legislative assistance development funds.

The provincial government also assured to implement various development programs with the approved budget for calendar 2010 amounting to P90,761,627.00.

Agusan del Norte province is rich in mineral resources and agriculture.

As this developed, Amante asked fellow officials and workers in the government to join hands in achieving its goal to make the province more developed and progressive.

“Our focus remains steadfast and clear, that the people of this province may one day live in progress and prosperity,” Amante said.

Amante outlined his administration’s poverty reduction through efficient delivery of basic services, economic growth, peace and order, fiscal capability and self-reliance, environmental protection and rehabilitation, dynamic and responsive administrative mechanism.

Launch of 3rd replica of Butuan ancient boat
set on July 9
By Ben Serrano (philstar.com) Updated July 04, 2010 04:00 PM

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines - After a successful launch last February 3 of two replicas of ancient Balangay boats now on their months-long ocean cruise, the “Masawa Hong Butuan” and “ Diwata Ng Lahi”, the third boat, LEPA, an engine-driven replica, will be launched on July 9 here.

This developed after Butuan Global Forum and partners from both private and government institutions were in the thick of preparation for the launching of the “3rd Balangay Boat” and its two-day river cruise tour set on July 10 and 11.

The river cruise will start at the historic Agusan River .

The third boat is to start with several stops in Mindanao before proceeding to an Asian tour.

The construction of the wind-driven boat Masawa Hong Butuan worth P1.6 million was shouldered by the Butuan Global Forum Inc., an association of Butuanons based here and abroad; the Kaya Ng Pinoy Foundation; and the Butuan Historical and Cultural Foundation Inc.

The two replicas of Balangay boats, all wind-driven, sailed on February 2 and February 4, respectively.

The river cruise on July 10 and 11 will pass the historic town of Magallanes, Agusan del Norte which claims as the real venue of the fist Christian Mass in the country, the reason why it is named “Magallanes” referring to Ferdinand Magellan.

The river cruise will also pass other historical landmarks along Agusan River where the “Golden Tara,” an ancient image made of gold that was found by the Manobo tribe sometime in the 1960’s.

Butuanons consider the vessel meaningful after remnants of around eight ancient balangay boats were excavated in Butuan City particularly in Barangay Libertad in 1978.

The oldest boat that was dug was carbon-dated at 320 AD.

Amante to Order Immediate Stoppage of 12 Mega projects set off by Plaza Administration

July 3, 2010

Butuan –Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr. has ordered his Auditing Team headed by former City auditor Leah Amante-Mendoza to review and make an audit report on the infrastructure projects implemented by former Mayor Democrito D. Plaza II, a few months before stepping down to office.

http://mindanao.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/former-Mayor-Boy-Daku-Plaza-current-Mayor-Ferdinand-Amante-Jr..jpg

In a press conference held after the oath taking ceremony on June 30, Mayor Amante assured the public to give justice and to look into allegations of corruption and abuse of power during the Plaza administration.

“We will wait for the results of the evaluation conducted by Auditor Mendoza’s team and if proven that there are irregularities I won’t hesitate to order for the stoppage of all these projects”, Mayor Amante said.

The new Mayor of Butuan assured, there will be no impartiality on the investigation and emphasized, “Vindictiveness is not within my vocabulary, whatever changes we will have to streamline the bureaucracy, whatever changes we made on the projects; it would be geared towards the development of the city”.
One of the 12-mega projects undertaken since April this year by the past administration is the new 4-storey SP Building and Session Hall located at the City Hall complex costing P178 million.

Other infrastructure projects constructed under investigation were the following: development of former Cadiz property for the construction of multi-purpose covered court in Doongan area, south market at Villa Kanangga, MDG Butuan Historical park, Taboan Multi Purpose Flea Market building, and the complete rehabilitation of Mayor Salvador Calo supermarket.

The auditing team meanwhile is set to submit its official report on the 18M Intelligence Fund which was found out that the only fund left to date is only 800 thousand pesos despite COA ruling that the allotment release must be done on quarterly basis.

“If found anomalous, those responsible are answerable”, said Ms. Leah Amante-Mendoza.

The Amante administration will also reduce the city government’s 1600 working force holding Job Order status.

Agusan del Norte posts economic growth in 2009
July 6, 2010, 3:18pm

BUTUAN CITY (PIA) – A province’s economy is measured by the total goods and services it generates, “and last year was exceptional because despite difficulties, the sector still posted notable accomplishments,” said Agusan del Norte Gov. Erlpe John Amante when he reported recently his 6th State of the Province Address (SOPA) at the covered court of the Provincial Capitol here.

In 2009, Amante said, the accomplishment of the sector was 54 percent over targets.

Export sales reached $3.25 million during the year in review while domestic sales reached P36.6 million.

“Agusan del Norte was able to generate investments amounting to P622.4 million resulting to the creation of 6,491 jobs,” Amante said.

Amante also emphasized those income augmentation projects which the province has implemented included Philippine Coconut Authority’s (PCA’s) Participatory Coconut Planting where farmers were encouraged to plant coconuts, and in return, they were given incentives.

“Out of the program, over 21,400 seedlings were planted and P322,000 was paid to farmers,” he said.

To further spur productivity, the province was able to implement various projects under the Caraga Integrated Development Program (CIDP).

The program covered post harvest facilities like farm-to-market roads, machinery and equipment totaling some P16.27 million.

Similarly, six projects costing P14.2 million were implemented under the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP).

These economic pump-priming programs were further enhanced by the construction of 82 accessibility and transport projects, categorized as Public Buildings, Roads and Bridges and environmental sustaining projects, which cost a total of P483 million.

Meanwhile, officials of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) is set to discuss the Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework Plan at downtown hotel and convention center here on July 8, it was learned Tuesday.

The MinDA’s communication team, along with its officials will sit before local tri-media and discuss more peace and development agenda, also with the direction of President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III to fast-track the peace, development, and economic effort for Mindanao. (With a report by Mike U. Crismundo)
