Bringing Back The Ships

The Nasipit International Port is maybe expanding, but the sad reality is that
there are only few ships docking nowadays, unlike in the past when there is
at least one vessel plying the Nasipit-Cebu route everyday.

To remedy the situation, Mayor-elect Roy Orlando Doyon went to Cebu City
two weeks ago and sat down with the management of big shipping companies,
such as Cebu Ferries and Trans Asia.

According to the incoming Mayor, the main problem presented to him by the
shipping companies is the distance between the port and their warehouses in
Butuan City.

Mayor-elect Doyon revealed that he offered to the shipping companies the NANIE
area as a possible site of their warehouses. He added that the shipping companies
are very interested with his offer and will be sending their representatives this
week to survey the area.

The Mayor-elect also said that he will take some measures that will entice the
dwindling ship passengers to again make the Nasipit International Port as their
embarkation and disembarkation point.

According to the Mayor-elect, one main reason why the ship passengers are shying
away from the Nasipit International Port is the malpractice of the Nasipit tricycle
drivers in charging excessive fare. He said that his administration may impose the
"ticket system" to stop this malpractice that besmirched the reputation of the entire
town.

Mayor-elect Doyon pointed out that the ship passengers may only be passerbies in
the town, but they contributed much to the local economy and, as such, should be
treated fairly and hospitably.

The real problem of the Nasipit Sea Port is the perception that passenger and cargo
customers are fleeced of their money for services unrendered or forcibly rendered.
There are numerous complaints from the riding public and cargo loaders that the
arrastre and stevedoring monopoly which controls the port's operations charge
exorbitant fees. The bigger issue being raised is the lack of options on the part of
"customers" in choosing how they want to transact their business at the port.

Ship passengers who disembark in Nasipit Port cannot take public land transport
direct to their destinations. They have to ride the "port-to-highway service" offered by
tricycles and jeeps in order to catch the jeepneys to Butuan and nearby towns, or
the buses that ply the Agusan-Misamis Oriental or the Agusan-Davao/Agusan-Surigao
routes. These public utility vehicles are not allowed to enter the port premises. Ship
passengers who will board their outbound ships must get off from buses and jeepneys
at the highway to transfer to the tricycles and jeeps that will bring them inside to the
pier. In going to the ship and in going out of the pier, passengers feel intimidated to
utilize the services of porters and stevedores to carry their belongings. The tricycle
fares and porterage charges add to the costs of travel with no choice on the part of the
travellers. As a result, Butuanons and Agusanons based on the eastern side of Agusan
River prefer to take the boat in Surigao.

Why can't the passengers be brought straight to the dock area by their PUJ and PUB
land carriers? Why do they have to undergo transfers of vehicles just to cover the
short distance from/to the pier from/to the highway? Why is the inter-modal system of
transport of sea and land being extended to at least two land trips when a cost-
effective combination of one sea trip and one land trip will provide economies
and convenience to travellers.

The answers to these questions lie in the rent-seeking arrangements being enjoyed by
the port operators. They want to earn easy money on their investments which
principally consist of their connections with the port licensing authority. They make
the systems and procedures at the port a source of passive income by charging
transport operators for the privilege of entering the port area. They use their control of
Nasipti Port to dispense favors and reinfornce their influence in the community by
allowing only their own favored people to operate the internal transport facility going
in and out of the pier. No wonder politicians fight one another to grab control of
Nasipit Port's operations. And their usual excuse is their overwhelming desire to give
employment to their constituents. This is done by dividing trips so that there will be
more passenger handling that will then require more drivers and more barkers and
more cops in the area.

What this people do not understand, or refuse to accept, is the Ro-Ro transport
system's coming of age in the Philippines. The day will not be far off when buses and
cargo trucks will travel the distance between the islands on board moving bridges,
which should be the function of Ro-Ro ferries. Passengers and cargoes will be loaded
at their respective points of origin and brought directly to their destinations on land.
There will be no need for stevedoring companies. Yet, there are efforts by these
businesses to continue charging arrastre fees on cargoes that move while remaining
at all times on the trucks' containers without any handling by stevedores or their
equipments. Then, they wonder why there is less traffic at the port.

These are the sea ports that are getting left behind in the country's Ro-Ro transport
development. Nasipit Port is one of these ports. The main reason is the refusal to
manage change and the insistence on old ways of doing business where the only
investment is political influence. The mentality of making money by charging for
privileges controlled by the business has to change. Otherwise, the community will
continue to suffer from inefficiencies until eventually, market conditions will render
the business irrelevant. People will go where they can best enjoy the value of their
money and undergo the least inconvenience.

point of information..the city council recently deliberate on a resolution...mandating large vehicle to use the new Diosdado Macapagal Br...
another thing...all roads leading to the city from the province is excellent condition...(agusan del sur section is 97% rehablitated Maharlika highway...)
with regards to political matters...sooner or later local politician will realize they can"t fool the masses....the public is watching ...in how the political clans of this city will play their card................

Another issue is mabaw lang ang port... mag lisod og liko or larga ang barko alalayan pag barge. I dont know matagal na yan ganun pa din eh... kaya mga passengers mag titiis nalng og bayad sa plane rather than to take barko kay lisod tas daghan mangwarta sa nasipit especially mga laborers. Pati ang mga motorcycle.

J.Aquino will revive the application of NORMISIST "university" status conversion bill....he said he will study the bill thoroughly...and revise its context if possible...if you could remember it was archive @ the Senate committee on Education...mainly because it weren't sign as an urgent bill....now his 'working"

likely that Nasipit Port has reached its land capacity for expansion...so the viability of constructing a new port in Butuan could more promising..

Masao Port for exmple is undergoing a 100 Million upgrade being implemented by PPA

Lake Mainit is a vast lake bounded by the provinces of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte...more than half of its area is on the Agusan side wile the remaining belongs to Surigao del Norte..

its contributaries come from Diwata Mountain Ranges and Agusan flood plains and sends off drains to Butuan Bay and Surigao Straight..

Considered as CARAGAs jewel...a number of lake resorts have begun operating in the area..one of them in Agusan side is Almont Hotel..a local Hotel operator in Butuan now operates the most comfy resort in the lake..

For great views one need take car or bus ride from either points in Butuan or Surigao...once the highway undulates....the Lake reveals its splendor..

Sa ngayon wala pa. But sooner or later magkaroon din yan.. un nga lang floating pa ang processing... hahahaha... I think Almont hotel will put up there and soon it will boost the tourist destination in that particular place. Sana mag tayo jan ang Doties Place at Caraga hotel. At sana din Balangay hotel in Butuan mag put up pod sila kay murag fit man sa name sa hotel .. nya kinahanglan pod nga floating restaurant ang ilang i put up.... I would suggest... Lake Balangay floating resautant. hahaaha

Why is Butuan lagging behind? There are a million and one reasons. Some of them:

- A bridge that was opened right before elections despite known defects only to be closed a few weeks after opening.

- A network of good roads that go to the properties of the powers-that-be and rough roads on both sides of Agusan River.

- A coliseum to be constructed on overpriced land with no plans how to use the huge complex for economical activities.

- A river port proposed to be operated on the Agusan River in locations that will boost the values of rich landowners' properties.

- A sea port whose operations the Mayor's family wants to control even after failing to win the mayoralty of Nasipit town.

linking the port town of nasipit to butuan city (e.g. building a motorway) should be the TOP priority, in so saying, i'm suggesting that the mega-airport project should be set aside first in favor of the magellan port project (which, by the way, will benefit more low and middle income mindanaons ) imo lang .... :cheers:

I am 100% agree with you that the seaport would be the better priority than the airport...The airport will just probably need physical upgrades as it is currently able to handle wide bodied airbus aircrafts...

But the economic impact of a seaport would be bigger....

kaso lang, that seaport seem more expensive than the airport project

but it serves more people in mindanao, and in that way triggers greater economic activity, if GMA is really pro poor (is she?), then the port project should be given top priority ..... :cheers:

mmmmm......you have a point.....(di kaya she/GMA will use this as another bait for the next elections?) ask ko lang po madam president....

just like what happened to Mindanao Railways...seems they will use this as bait again for the next elections....

i agree though but for a regional centre it deserve an upgraded modern airport facility. they have tourism industry not just centre of regions trade and commerce.

correct..pero it would be impossible if sabay sabay i-implement lahat...(due to financial reasons)

all the projects around our supra regions seems coordinated....like pagkatapos ng Butuan Second Bridge....the Panguil Bay bridge was considered....then pagkatapos nyan sa Samal naman....

a highway had been existing to Nasipit even before that port was built....(Butuan-CDO-Iligan Hi-way)....currently it is now in the process of widening to 4 lanes starting with Libertad-Bancasi Section....

Constructing another motorway will be redundant and will just waste taxpayers money

i know... but the highway itself (at one point or another) is still bordered by informal settlers ... how would you connect a port town to a city in an optimal manner, how would you make them "nearer" to each other? ... i know for one that you could only drive at a maximum speed of 50 kmh along that stretch... otherwise you will be endangering the lives of the manoks, kids, pedestrians, motorelas, etc... who also "use" the 4 lane highway.

taxpayer's money is not wasted for as long as it is invested in top priority impact projects imo ;)

that could be another alternative.....building the seaport under BOT scheme....but for the past years...Philippines has been a poor performer under BOTs especially on seaports...

The color doesnt matter with official seal. The colors of the seal are same with the Philippine Flag. Cguro they used orange color so that it will be seen clearly to everybody.... :lol: :lol: :lol:

YUP! everywhere in the Philippines meron spagheti I think exept Bonifacio Global City, Ayala Cebu... sana may mag suggest na i underground nalang ung City power. But anyways, because floods man jud mao nga dami mga spagheti around the corners. I dont know kung sa Uptown Davao marami din wires... I went to davao downtown with my Auntie meron din sila wires....

Wow! nice post MtApoStandard... ang haba naman ng screen name mo.. hehheheh... I've seen that overpass... hindi masyado nagagamit ng tao mao nga sayang lang ang pera na ginamit jan.. but then maybe later mga 2010 0r 2020 hahaha magagamit na yan kse i think maging busy na yang boulevard na yan. I've seen also the tallest building in the City the former carl patrict's hotel and it's owned now by Metro bank and I dont know kung yong ibang floors nagagamit ba. sayang yang building na yan... tsk tsk tsk.....

This pics was taken at the second overpass. nganong bati naman kaayo tan awon ang overpass. Gibutangan nila og screen or wires. Cguro ilang gibutangan og harang kay sometimes daghan mga buang nag stay sa overpass tas basin ba og mo ambak na.. impass... hahahaha that's my opinion... hahahaha

Saving Butuanon language

Any language with fewer than 300,000 speakers is regarded by international linguistics experts as endangered. The Butuanon language at present can only be spoken by fewer than 500 youngsters in Butuan itself. If the next generations of Butuanons are not taught Butuanon in school that will be the end of the Butuanon ethnolinguistic people.

In relation to other Philippine languages, Butuanon belongs to the Southern branch of Visayan languages, and the Visayan languages (Cebuano, Waray, Hiligaynon, and others) in turn belong to the Southern branch of Philippines languages (to which the Mindanao, Bicolano and Tagalog languages also belong).

Butuanon is one of the Visayan languages. Specifically it belongs to the Southern branch of Visayan. As such, most of the words in its vocabulary are cognate to the words found in other Visayan languages. Its grammatical rules are also similar to its fellow Visayan languages Suri*gaonon and Cebuano.

A common misconception is that Butuanon is a dialect, but in fact it is a language. Dialects are defined by international linguistic standards as mutually intelligible versions of a language. For example, the common medium of communication in Barangay Babag Butuan City is mutually intelligible with the one used in Talakugon town; thus both are dialects of the same language, which is called Butuanon by international linguists.

Butuanon as a language is at par with the other 160 or so Philippine languages, including Tagalog, and the rest of the world’s languages. To call Butuanon a dialect does injustice to this rich and complex language.

Language is the main medium by which humans communicate ideas and feelings to each other. Consequently, language is not only the main transmitter of human culture, but it also forms the most important part of culture. Without language, human society and culture would not exist at all.

Language also has another role that is often overlooked. Each language is shared by a cultural community and forms the main basis for the existence of such a community, which is called an ethnolinguistic people. If the language of an ethnolinguistic people dies, so does this people. So if no can speak the Butuanon language, there will be no Butuanon ethnolinguistic people.

Children are born with the ability to learn any language, but they usually learn their parents’ first language—a language that has been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years. There are at present more than 6,000 distinct languages and people of the world. Each week, one or two of them die out, due to the death of the last people who know, speak and write in those languages and years of discriminatory policies of governments that promote only the language of their capitals and business and cultural centers.

These languages differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Each language offers unique concepts and ways of expressing them, and thus offers unique perspectives (points of view), besides defining every people of the world. Each langauge is priceless and irreplaceable to lose.

To save the Butuanon Language, the SOLFED Foundation Inc., a nongo*vern*mental organization, embarked on the publication of the Butuanon Syllabus through the assistance of some local volunteer teachers who serve as interpreters, translators and part-time teachers.

Since no Butuanon Syllabus has ever been made and Cebuano and Butuanon are very similar in syntax but different in the pronunciation of many words and phonemes, existing Cebuano models were used.

The main purpose of this syllabus is to preserve the priceless and irreplaceable Butuanon language that has defined the Butuanon people for more than a thousand years.

A subdivision built on rice field is very risky. First, the underlain soil is unstable as constantly saturated with water (Unless of course the filling materials are stable). Rice fields are natural floodplains so if flood grows, the housing units would become floating units. Because the soil is soft, housing units constructed will have many defects because the soil needs to stabilize before actual construction. This can be mitigated however with a good and sound and properly engineered drainage system calculating maximum rainfall data, natural drainage pattern and flood history in that area.

I agree. But IMO, I think that area was elevated by sand & gravel. Talagang babaha yan jan pag walang drainage system sila. YUP the flood problem is one of the big problem in Butuan. But then since Gloria made her promises already... sabay ang inauguration ng flood control system, VIADUCT & Macapagal bridge if I'm not mistaken. so, masasabi natin na 80 percent na solved na ang problem sa flood. Kse ang Rio Grande de Butuan mag overflow once i open ang dam sa Davao river so talagang mag kakaroon ng problem. I hope now dili na unta kay it cause a lot of problems lalo na sa mga nag aaral at local employee... ENSHALLAH

Hi Bob,

I was just curious if these overpasses are new. Please forgive me for not remembering the street. But when I was there in 2005 the van let me out in front of Dotties Place but on the other side of the street. You may be too young to remember the arcade game Frogger. But I felt like the frog trying to cross the street without getting run over by all the vehicles. It was quite comical to watch I am sure. :lol: I am sure almost three years later that traffic is even worse on that road.

My wife said that they have taxi's in Butuan now. They didn't have any when I was there in 2005 but I think it is pretty cool to ride in a jeepney anyway.

yup....Inland has a convention hall that can accomodate 1500 persons...it played host recently with the National Convention on Foresters of the Philippines....and other such big leauges like League of Cities of the Philippines Con...

Dotties' Grand Con,also has a 1500 to 2000 seating capacity, not to be outdone recently hosted the Mindanao Congress on Diabetes just last month....

It's better to put pedestrian in Gaisano to accomodate such many shopperers pati don sa Otis Mall kelangan mag put up sila og isa kay dilikado man mo tawid didto. dako na baya ang road tas daghan vehicle. By the way Bob, nahuman na ba ang Otis Mall? balita ko kse nag expand daw sila.

guys good news.............the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge is a passable to traffic now a days........cgru matagal na to.........kahapon ko pa na pansin , fortunately an opportunity came by........I've seen it with my own...HANOY KAAYO... ang dalan....luag in both sides..........sayang nga lang wala q nakadala og portable camera..........wala pa cya g paagian sa heavy traffic kay wala pai enabling ordinance to compel heavy vehicle......g deliberate pa cya sa council.............hopefully ma pass na cya................para ma decongest na ang Magsaysay Bridge........:cheers: :cheers: :cheers: :banana: :banana: :banana:

kindly do not miss also the feverish construction activities going on along South Montilla Blvd. in Villa Kanangga near the converging point of the boulevard and Tungao Road.....the SJIT Coliseum and Campus civil works are in full swing....sige na sila bagdak ug piles to reinforce the foundations ...and also try to take pics on the construction of Cinderella Mansions...our OFW and expats would really love to see those new subdivision houses..
