^^ which is exactly why they deferred their plans for Butuan. Unlike Tacloban and Dumaguete, Butuan's disposable income isnt that high and the projected profit margin is too small for them to take the risk. That is why instead of taking the plunge they decided to wait and capitalize on Robinsons Tacloban first :)

that's bad.. but my own opinion, i think building a new mall in butuan is still not feasible. People in butuan doesn't have that much disposable income. Malls don't really contribute in the city economically, it would just drain the money out of the city. What do we really need for now are BPO's

Good Day Iron Prince. I just want to clarify regarding what you posted that"people in Butuan doesn't have that much disposable income".

Is this base on your own opinion or from a legitimate study? If it is based on a legitimate study, can we have the source please for this will be a very good material for the city officials to look into.

Dont get your hopes up just yet. From what I heard, the plan for a Robinsons in Butuan is on hold.Studies show that unlike the one in Tacloban and Dumaguete, it wont be as successful as they hoped They are instead concentrating on rehabilitating Robinsons Galleria, Robinsons Place Manila and Robinsons Place Bacolod. For new malls, the ones for construction are full service malls in Pangasinan and Palawan, expansion of Robinsons Taclobanas well as the future "special" malls in Cebu and in Quezon City. In Mindanao Robinsons projects are in the Ayala Mall Davao as well as the Robinsons Supermarket in Pagadian. From what my friend who works for Robinsons told me, those are the planned cities..I heard Zamboanga but im not sure if its the one in Pagadian or if there is a plan for a full service mall in Zamboanga City. No mention as to when the Butuan proposal will be reincluded in their plans though

:ohno: If this is true, then it's just another Bad news for us Butuanons. This Rob Butuan is still a rumor anyway until now. We've always stressed in our posts that there is NO official statement yet coming from RLC itself. Expectations just grew high when a Tarp with a Rob logo was put up at their property site last May. Now I wonder, what was that all about? I cannot imagine the previous admin would do such a thing to embarrass themselves much more decieve the Butuanons with a fake tarp?

Sana hindi ito totoo. I am still hoping against hope that they will push through with their Butuan proposal.

excuse me....do you speak in behalf of Robinsons Land?

you sound as if you are very sure of those what you heard

heard from who?

are you saying that that very provincial and sleepy municipality in Ilocos has more disposable income than Butuan just because a Robinsons Mall happens to rise in the middle of their rice and grass field?

so what reliable latest official data do you have regarding the socio economic profile of Butuan?

Butuan – Twenty two (22) policemen and eleven (11) policewomen performed a fancy drill at the parade ground of Police Regional Office 13 on the occasion of their fiesta celebration at Camp Rafael Rodriguez in Libertad, this city.

The entire routine is conducted with minimal verbal commands and audiences were wowed by the execution of several exhibitions.

The policemen carry out the exhibition drill of intricate precision marching, formation and rifle drill where every member twirls and exchanges rifles with one another.

The 11-member team policewomen who just promoted to Police Inspector rank of Class 2010-109 of the Public Safety Officers Basic Course, equally performs well in unique performances forming a circle and a heart, danced, bowed and made a salute.

Forming the circle is a semblance of the PNP organization in unity while heart symbolizes every police personnel’s love to serve the community.

The performers show the strength and unity with matching music, overall, they showed powerful display of police discipline. (striker_jem

I agree with you ate bunny. ^^ Legitimate yung info na binigay ni iamawesome. It came from the Bureau of Local Government Supervision. He even provided a link to the source.

Did Robinsons buy the land between 2Go and Kajima? Where did this information came from? Where's the detailed information on this? WHERE'S THE OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FROM ROBINSONS LAND? Is Former Mayor Plaza a man of his word? WE WANT ANSWERS!

I guess BLACK PROPAGANDA lang to sa mga Plazas. They put up this "so-called" Robinsons tarpaulin so that Butuanons can trust and believe in them, and vote for Mrs. Plaza. How could they do this to us? They're soo evil!!

Diba, someone here sent an e-mail to Robinsons and they said they don't have a property here in Butuan.

Much better, i-confront nalang si Boy Daku, kay siya lang ang makatubag ana OR send an e-mail to RLC containing the photos of the so-called tarpaulin so that they can file a case against the perpetrators of this tarp.

For now, rumor nalang na. Dapat molambo usa atong ekonomiya kay soco economic profile baya ang tan-awon sa mga investors like RLC.

As much as possible, avoid flaming and CvC.

Sorry, it was an honest mistake.

Anyway with regards to the score on economic development.. I guess this tells us that economic development isnt just based on how many new establishments you have. For the study, if you try to analyze the parameters, its about the economic health of the people in a given area.

Case in point Cagayan de Oro, it is among the country's most progressive cities, but it scored so poorly because of the high incidence of poverty and underemployment.. I guess you can call a place economically progressive when the least of the people reap the benefits of a progressive city. When the benefits of the investment trickle down to the majority. Kudos to cebu for this, such a high score on the economic side, meaning the least of the people did not get left behind by the development

Where Butuan is, right now, is a reflection of the performance of the past administration. But I do believe that the past administration did their best. Only, the administrators of those cities na nakaungos sa BXU did better.

Let this fact be a challenge to the new administration and all of us should move forward. Pabayaan na natin ang nakaraan kasi tapos na yon. Maybe kung merong anomalies, let the courts decide.

Am very positive tataas ang overall ratings sa BXU this year base on news releases of new investments coming in. Next week an Investment Forum for HERB's BEST INTERNATIONAL will take place. If the forum will produce positive results, HERB's BEST INTERNATIONAL ( http://www.herbsbest.com ) may relocate its base operations in BXU. This company is a producer of wellness products using malunggay, abaca, coconut, and many other herbs, all of which are available in caraga.

That is why, the overall ranking should be the one given the attention. And the study revealed that even the Growth Cities CDO, BACOLOD and ILOILO received an overall rating below 3.

I do not know how to reconcile this with the competitive cities study of AIM. Here Cagayan de Oro just got a rating of 2.00 (= poor) for economic development. If this is the rating they gave for CDO the 1.50 BXU got is not that bad.

With this rating for CDO (where economic development is very evident), there might be something wrong in the research intrument used.

Was there an official press release from Robinsons upon the purchase of land/property? Nadoon na yung tarp (election season pa naman inilagay, after a few weeks, gitangtang na) wala pang official PR from RLC. Dugay na ni siya na rumor. Pila na ka tuig ang nilabay. That is why, the overall ranking should be the one given the attention. And the study revealed that even the Growth Cities CDO, BACOLOD and ILOILO received an overall rating below 3.

One's performance is only as good as its weakest link. IMO but to each his own I guess

Here is some further reading on the importance of having a balanced rating

Socio-economic and environment are inter-dependent. A healthy and good quality human resource (labor force) is a productive working force that breeds a healthy economy and one that recognizes the value of environmental quality. A well-managed economy sustains the productivity of natural endowments and the life support system needed to build a health society. Well-conserved natural resources provide communities with a sustainable source of livelihood and income and thus improve their economic welfare. Clean environment and good economy ensure the quality of life.

It is, therefore, important that these three sectors are equally given importance to achieve a balanced and sustained development.

Economic Development was measured not by the vibrancy of the local economy (AIM rating) but with these parameters which show how the economic vibrancy has trickled to the masses.

1. State of Income
a.Income per Capita
b. Poverty Incidence

2. State of Employment
a.Underemployment rate
b.Unemployment rate

Unfortunately for Cagayan de Oro, it got a "bad" rating for the Income per Capita and Poverty Incidence resulting in a "bad" rating for state of Income but a "fair" rating for state of employment after having "poor" rating for Underemployment rate but a "high" rating for employment rate. As for Butuan, it received a "bad" rating for both for state of income and state of employment albeit in each category Butuan

As posted earlier, its when the least of the people are enjoying a decent life when you can say that the quality of life is good in a locality.Which is why you dont just base the economic health of a locality solely on what you see on the surface (ie having the biggest this and tallest that)

One's performance is only as good as its weakest link. IMO but to each his own I guess

Here is some further reading on the importance of having a balanced rating

An excellent example is Cebu City where it scored "high" on state of income and "Fair" on state employment which shows that the vibrancy of the economy is felt across social classes and not just a select few.

Same reason why countries like New Zealand and Brunei, boring as they may look in pictures are considered "developed countries" while our country, with all our malls and high rise buildings in Makati and Ortigas, remains classified as a third world country

Thanks for your thoughts. Anyway the instrument used for any research matters as well as how the respondents are chosen. If this research was done with all impartiality, then it only shows how poor the Philippines is for even the considered growth centers failed to get high marks.

There is always what we refered to as abuse and misuse of statistics. I only hope this never happened in this research. I wonder how our friends in CDO reacted to this.

DA wants more post-harvest, trading centers in region

Manila Bulletin - Thursday, August 5SendIM StoryPrint
http://ph.news.yahoo.com/mb/20100805/tph-da-wants-more-post-harvest-trading-c-584a460.html

BUTUAN CITY - The Department of Agriculture (DA) said Thursday it is poised to invest in putting up more post-harvest and trading centers in Mindanao to boost productivity and efficiency as farmers ship their products to other areas here and abroad.

"We are continuing the provision of the necessary infrastructure in the form of small-scale irrigation projects, greenhouses, screenhouse/nethouse and rain shelters and post-harvest facilities such as packaging house and tramline," Agriculture Undersecretary Joel S. Rudinas said during the 7th Mindanao Vegetable Congress at Almont Hotel's Inland Resort, this city.

The DA's direction, following what President Aquino discussed in his State-of-the-Nation Address, would also help expand vegetable areas by providing more seeds, organic fertilizers, seedling trays and other production inputs, he said.

During his speech, Rudinas also cited Caraga's favorable agro-climatic conditions which have paved the way for growing semi-temperature vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, cabbage and broccoli as well as tropical varieties like squash, eggplant and bitter gourd.

"We can capitalize on resources and strategic location. Let's plant high-value crops and wake up the economy in this point of the country," he said, noting that Mindanao has been left behind by other neighboring countries in Southeast Asia and that it could also produce more vegetables not just for the local market.

To be able to find more market, Rudinas also said organizations and associations that are involved in vegetable production, processing and marketing are needed for Caraga vegetable growers' products to make waves in other areas.

Caraga region is shipping at least 20 metric tons of squash, eggplant and okra to Leyte and Cebu weekly, said Dr. Joanna B. Cuenca, Caraga State University president.

Mga Brods and Sis sa thread. Do not feel bad for the published study is just an APPROXIMATION. How accurate the approximation is the one to be established.

I do not have any qualms regarding the approximate economic development rating of 1.50 for BXU kasi tataas talaga ito in the coming years. I bet all my fingers...apil mga tudlo sa tiil. he he he

What i really cannot seem to believe is the approximate economic development rating of 2.00 for CDO despite the thoughts posted by some friends here.

Kada survey, naa gud na kaugalingong biases. Unya mag-usab usab pa gud na every year. Heheheheh...It's OK to feel something about it, pero let's not dwell on it.

Then, knowing nga nakapalit pud ang mga Aboitiz ug lugar diha, so, naa gud ta'y ma-expect nga development.

Basin nag-feasibility pa ang Robinsons ug Aboitiz, kung asa nga aspect sila mo-focus para sa Butuan.

Mao lang ako ma-share nga huna-huna.

FYI regarding LGPMS:

This tool is used by the LGU to rate their own performance based on data consolidated for the respective annum.

This is the short definition and function of LGPMS:

The Local Governance Performance Management System, or LGPMS for brevity, serves as a robust on-line national information system on local governments. It is a self-assessment, management and development tool that enables local governments – provinces, cities and municipalities – to determine their capabilities and limitations in the delivery of essential public services. It is a web-based system that has the ability to produce information on the state of local governance performance, and the state of local development, using governance and development indicators.

What is more important is WHAT HAVE YOU/WE DONE for Butuan??? we can fill these threads with all these rants and redundant blah blahs....but whats the brilliant idea and the evident action plan?

so, how can a self confessed MBA Atenista act and must do to help Butuan??

BOB-bXu
August 6th, 2010, 07:39 AM
^^ which is exactly why they deferred their plans for Butuan. Unlike Tacloban and Dumaguete, Butuan's disposable income isnt that high and the projected profit margin is too small for them to take the risk. That is why instead of taking the plunge they decided to wait and capitalize on Robinsons Tacloban first :)

in the first place WAS there really a plan to construct???

where there any official report that says " RLC to Begin ROB BXU MALL " ?? ... I would say none yet as of this time

so anong PLAN na dinefer na wala pa ngang plan dodong.

it's just a land bank up to this time

it does not mean that when they bought the land that they would immediately build a mall on top of it pronto.

so, will you be so kind and too knowledgeable to post any link that says like this:....." RLC defers ROB Place BXU MALL"...

where is it?

and PS....what's that 3 triangle smileys ( ^^ ) appearing before your statement all about? masaya ka ata with "what you heard"

Kudos to cebu for this, such a high score on the economic side, meaning the least of the people did not get left behind by the development

again you sounded so sure on this ....can you reconcile it - that how can you label such place as high in poverty and under employment yet be progressive??

CDO has high employment rate and that was on record.

What a funny & unlikely name for a Hotel & Restaurant but it sure does attracts a lot of attention kaya lang at the same time might also scare away those who are suspicious of anything with "Goat" in it  joke

From a humble beginning as a small fastfood somewhere in Doongan-Ambago area, Goat 2geder is now gaining the reputation as the "Place to be in Butuan", venues for conventions, weddings, Birthday gatherings, etc. Isa na siya sa mga hotspots in the city ^^

This is the last time I am going to reply to you since it appears you are letting your emotions get the best of you when you post.

in the first place WAS there really a plan to construct???

where there any official report that says " RLC to Begin ROB BXU MALL " ??

I dont know what their plans are for Butuan if its a mall or just a supermarket, what I have been told is that they the Robinsons Retail Group acquired a lot in Butuan and they had plans to build sooner but they deferred it to a later date. As to what they are going to build there, that I do not know. By saying mall, I was talking in the general sense..If you are going to nit pick then fine, lets call it Robinsons Retail group project then

and PS....what's that 3 triangle smileys ( ^^ ) appearing before your statement all about? masaya ka ata with "what you heard"

i dont know with you but to me ^^ isnt a smiley but is an arrow up to refer to the post above instead of quoting it.

again you sounded so sure on this ....can you reconcile it - that how can you label such place as high in poverty and under employment yet be progressive??

CDO has high employment rate and that was on record.

The projects Cagayan de Oro has can qualify it as being progressive..meaning its moving forward from where it previously was..With new investments rising its not retrogressing right? nor is it stagnant..its neither moving back nor staying the same therefore its progressing

But the question is if the progress is felt by the masses and that where it fails according to the study. I dont know what your educational attainment is but I was expecting an educated person to easily understand when I made it perfectly clear that the report isnt about how much investments/projects a city has but how it has trickled down to the population through their state of income and state of employment. And that is where Cagayan de Oro scored bad, It may have a very high employment rate but that good rating was dampened by a high Underemployment rate (which is probably the reason for the poor rating on income)..One may be employed but if his income is not enough to sustain his needs then he isnt that much better than the unemployed right.. and that is not a good thing isnt it?

Underemployment - A situation in which a worker is employed, but not in the desired capacity, whether in terms of compensation, hours, or level of skill and experience. While not technically unemployed, the underemployed are often competing for available jobs.

not ONLY we are given the right to post about Butuan.

What is more important is WHAT HAVE YOU/WE DONE for Butuan??? we can fill these threads with all these rants and redundant blah blahs....but whats the brilliant idea and the evident action plan?

so, how can a self confessed MBA Atenista act and must do to help Butuan??

for now BOB, we still have to wait and see what mayor Amante's plan for Butuan. Nothing really much to do, investing this early will be a great risk.

so when will be the best time to invest then??

the greatest risk of all is NOT taking any risk at all.

so are we going to just continue to stay along the sidelines as ever and do the wait-and-see stance again??

or are we just going to shut up making endless rants and yada yada and fold our sleeves and buckle to work for a progressive Butuan

dont get irritated....let's not be emotional as I demanded from you a more objective reply. you said you heard....then I ask you :: heard from whom?

you said about a plan... state the official resource about the plan...you dont have to wind around with a play of your words just to make your point appear credible....until you are able to suffice your point with reliable official sources...then what you are saying this time for now are just flimsy products of imagination

be careful of mis representing a big entity as Robinsons Land....as you seem to state things as if they are official...like these points you mentioned which I colored and highlighted for your better understanding:

"..what I have been told.." ----> told by and from whom?

"...they had plans to build sooner..."---> when? how soon is sooner?

"...they deferred it to a later date..."----> what date?....how late is later?..from what source ?

then finally you said:

"...As to what they are going to build there, that I do not know..."

are you sure you are sharing an opinion here or are you just joking :)

i did said not taking risk, but rather greater risk... since it's to early to foresee the future of butuan... and that perhaps somehow a factor why ROB delayed it's plan in Butuan... it's not as simple as simple as ABC's. That's what happened to Carl Patrick, he's so hype and was not able to foresee the financial crisis that happened in 97 - 98, so as with E.R in Iligan, Uniwide in cebu. and many more

the event in the 1997 is diferent now..what happened in 1997 was a regional phenomenon affecting all Asian economies..and the time when many projects were shelved...a phenomenon which Butuanons and locals have no direct control .....

now that the Philippine economy in general with Butuan economy in particular have survived the inclement economic condition in 2008 to early 2009 and is now poised for gains....the signs of momentum are there: foreign investors are talking heads with city officials....during several months prior to May elections we see private projects going up...

these are just signs of a greener life ahead.. and we should be keeping it up...keep it going until they are realized...by partaking in the effort and not just on the sidelines

by being forward looking....by being doers...rather than just whiners

by being optimists rather than just pessimists

My projection for butuan for 2010 - 2013 would be a total of 150% improvements, but as i said to0 early for pouring investments... it's sill a month since amante is in in office... that's what we are waiting for...

Call for papers CJSH
Caraga State University
Ampayon, Butuan City
Telephone No. (085) 3426251

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Caraga Journal of Science and Humanities (CJSH) is a semi-annual, peer reviewed journal that publishes articles that contribute new results in the areas of Science, Mathematics, Engineering, IT, Agriculture, Education, Arts and Humanities. The journal exists to serve the following objectives:

To provide a focal point for dissemination of scientific researches, discoveries and new theories generated by the University researchers;
To promote greater collaboration, communication and sharing of information.
The CJSH is inviting submissions from authors inside and outside the University for its Maiden Issue which is targeted to come out in December 2010.

Publication Criteria
The criteria for publication are weighted toward quality and significance. Manuscripts are assessed according to their originality, scientific merit, and experimental design, and evaluated for conciseness, clarity, and presentation.

Manuscript Preparation
Authors should write in a clear and simple manner, avoiding unnecessary jargon, so that the article is understandable to readers in other disciplines. The following are important guidelines to follow:
1. The manuscript should be submitted in pdf format in a letter size (8.5”x11”) bond paper with margin of 1.5 inches on the left-hand side and 1 inch on top, bottom and right sides of bond paper. Pages should be numbered on right side TOP OF PAGE. The paper should be 12 pages or less including Figures and Tables but excluding the title page.
2. The manuscript should be organized in the following order:

TITLE PAGE. The title page contains the title, author names and addresses and colleges to which the paper should be attributed. The title should be centered, typewritten in bold, all uppercase letters and arranged in inverted pyramid. The author names are typewritten in bold, lowercase except the first letter and placed below the title with the following format: First name Middle initial Last name. The complete postal and e-mail address, telephone/and of facsimile no. of the author whom correspondence should be addressed are written below the author names.

ABSTRACT. Typed as a single paragraph, the ABSTRACT follows the title page. The abstract must represent the content of all the main sections of the paper. This section should briefly but clearly state the main objectives and scope of research work, describe the principal methodology and summarize the main findings and their significance. It should NOT contain figures, tables and references to literature. It should be less than 350 words, i.e. half-page. The title of the paper should appear above the ABSTRACT.

INTRODUCTION. This section introduces the paper, hence should include (1) background that describes the nature and scope of the research problem investigated (how and where the research problem arose) and how important the problem is, (2) a statement on how the present study contributed to the solution of the research problem, (3) information that defines the extent of the present work, (4) the significance of the study, and (5) study objectives.

MATERIALS AND METHODS. The materials and procedures used should be adequately and described in sufficient detail that other competent researchers can reproduce the study. This section identifies the type of study used (e.g. survey, case-control, case series, experiment), sources of materials employed (and important characteristics), sampling procedure data collection techniques/tools (e.g. records review, interview checklist, interview guide) time periods, study setting as well as procedures for assessment of data. Statistical tests used must be cited and should specify the data analyzed. For experiments, the experimental design, interventions used and the number of replicates should also be mentioned. The use of generic or chemical names is preferred over trade names. The trade name, if not avoided must be used only in the MATERIALS AND METHODS section.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. The results comprise the answers to the research question posed in the INTRODUCTION. The data must be presented clearly, concisely and logically. In discussing the findings, do not repeat but only interpret the study results and observations; show how the results and interpretations agree or contrast with previously published works. If necessary, inconsistency between the present work and that of others must be explained. The shortcomings of the methods used and the implications of the findings must be discussed. This section may be divided into subheadings in the order of citation in the MATERIALS AND METHODS section, for easier reading or to avoid confusion.

CONCLUSION. Conclusion must be based solely on the study results. Before concluding, the authors may indicate any principal limitations of the study, any restrictions in the generalizability of the findings to the population, the accuracy and precision of analytical methods and the effect of uncontrolled variables. This section may include recommendations arising from the results of the study.

LITERATURE CITED. All citations in the text should have entries in the LITERATURE CITED section. The entries should be listed in alphabetical order. Each reference should contain the last name followed by the initials of the first name and middle initial (where available) of the author/s (capital letters), year, title of article/chapter, name of journal/book/thesis/dissertation, volume no.: inclusive pages. For books, the editor (where applicable), place of publication and publisher must also be mentioned. The author is wholly responsible for the accuracy of the references.

References cited in the text of the paper should be written by last name of first author or authors (for 1 or 2 authors) followed by the year. If there are three or more authors, then the last name of the first author should be cited, followed by et al. and year: e.g. Varela (2003); Varela and Fernandez (2000); Pineda et al. (2004) or Pineda et al, 2004.

Tables must be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Each table should carry a table number and a brief descriptive title that is no longer than 10 to 15 words, placed on top of the table. Tables should be numbered in the order of their presentation or their citation in the text and must replace lengthy explanations in the text that may not suffice without a table. Tables must be strictly limited in numbers and should contain only the essential data. Acronyms and unusual abbreviations included in the tables must be properly identified using table footnotes. A table should stand alone, i.e., it can be fully understood even without referring to the text.

Figures (e.g., illustrations, diagrams, photographs, plates) should be few, camera-ready (at least one, the others may be photocopies) and placed in separate sheets of paper. These should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the body of the paper and provided with concise titles placed at the bottom, including a brief description of the figures. Illustrations, photographs or plates should be prepared in such a way that they can be fully understood even without referring to the body of the manuscript. All figures should be cited in the text. Illustrations should be attached to or drawn on separate sheets with legends. Where necessary, magnification should shown by a scale marker drawn on the photograph. The original source must be acknowledged if any illustrations, photographs or graphs, etc. used in the manuscript have been published.

Copyright
Copyright of the article submitted must be transferred to CSU and authors will be asked to sign a Copyright Agreement. However, the authors reserve all proprietary rights other than copyright, such as patent rights.

Submission
Submission of Manuscripts may be done in two ways:
1. E-mail cover letter and manuscript to cjsh@carsu.edu.ph This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
2. Submit one hard copy of the cover letter, 3 copies of the manuscripts, and an electronic version to:

Copyright of the article submitted must be transferred to CSU and authors will be asked to sign a Copyright Agreement. However, the authors reserve all proprietary rights other than copyright, such as patent rights.

Got questions with this one:

1. Will an abstract be published in the proceedings?
2. If published, is the conference proceedings listed in ISSN?
3. If not published, can I submit an abstract where it is already published in several international conferences?

I have some of my research papers I can submit but it is already published outside the Philippines.. :(

James natingala lang ko kapaspas ba sa ila publication. Imagine isubmit sa August. Tapos naa na acceptance by October. Then Published na sa DEcember. Kinsa kaha ang mga peer reviewers? Mga tagasulod lang?

In established journals, wala may schedule ibutang kung kanus-a ang acceptance ug kanus-a mogawas ang paper. In most cases, naa pa mga comments ang reviewer ana tapos kung kanus-a maokay ang paper ayha ra mapublish. Sometimes it will take years labi na kung ang reviewer busy mao dili dayon matagaan ug time.

Am sure what they posted will send a wrong signal labi na sa mga "elitista" sa Big 3 universities sa Philippines.

Yup.. I agree with you bai... Normally in a conference or a journal, call for papers is done at least 6 to 7 months before the publication or the actual conference so that there will be time to review the abstracts done by the technical committee.. Hmm... Basin their journal s only applicable to students and instructors in CSU...

I wonder

That's really an airport for light planes. Dugay na man ni kaayo nga airport diha sa Caloc-an, Magallanes. I think it was operational since mga 1960's pa man seguro when the logging and plywood manufacturing was at its peak. This was used by executives of Sta Ines Melale Plywood Factory, JCA Plywood Factory, EMI (match company), JAKA of Juan Ponce Enrile and other factories that operated in Magallanes. Magallanes is a small industrial town that relies its income at most from industries.

Sa tinuod kinsa man tawn mag shopping-shopping ( aw hinuon window shopping ra, way labot palit ) dra sa robinson with a population of 250k+ with a negligible amount of tourist.

Mga tao kasagaran sad way credit card.

Buffer zone to protect Butuan watershed from logging, mining eyed

Written by: Mindanews , Mindanews
Monday, 09 August 2010

http://www.mindanaotimes.net/?p=11463

BUTUAN CITY – Threats posed by logging and mining activities to the city’s water supply have led to a proposal from a government-initiated body to create a permanent one-kilometer buffer zone at the Taguibo watershed area that straddles this city and parts of Agusan del Norte.

Edilberto Buiser, chair of the Taguibo Watershed Management Council said the buffer zone would protect the watershed from being affected by mining activities later.

The Taguibo Watershed, located in Barangay Anticala, is the major source of potable water supply distributed by the Butuan City Water District to more than 500,000 households and business establishments. It is also the water source of irrigation facilities in the city.

But the council said it has discovered illegal logging and mining activities in the area perpetrated by an unnamed businessman triggering a public outcry.

“The council is closely monitoring the activities of at least six prospective mineral operators near the proclaimed 4,000–.hectare Taguibo Watershed,” Buiser, also the regional executive director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Caraga, said during their fourth council meeting here over the weekend.

“Since Taguibo area is a proclaimed watershed, it is just appropriate and logical to closely monitor all activities in the area. There are other sites at the watershed that were developed and improved by some groups of indigenous peoples for their livelihood programs under the Community-Based Forest Management Program (CBFM),” he said.

Records at the Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau (MGB) regional office show that the Village Mining Exploration Corp. had applied for an exploration permit on June 8, 2007 covering 5,234.93 hectares for nickel and chromites mining.

Lawyer Roberto T. Tejano, a former Agusan del Norte vice governor, had also applied for an exploration permit covering 5,660.42 hectares for gold ore mining,

The other mining firms that have applied for exploration permits are the East Coast Mining Resources (5,660.42 hectares for nickel ore), Mega Tsung Mining Corp. (1,350.96 hectares for nickel ore) and Philippine Czec Mining Company Inc. (6,386.63 hectares for copper, gold and other minerals).

Their applications cover parts of the cities of Cabadbaran and Butuan and RTR town in Agusan del Norte.
Another mining firm, the United Philippines and China Mining Corp., filed on October 18, 2004 an application for a Mineral Production Sharing Agreement (MPSA) for gold mining covering 2,384.86-hectares in RTR.

MGB records indicated that the application permits of these tenement holders were still being processed.
Region Xlll MGB Regional Director Alilio Ensomo said that the Taguibo Watershed has rich deposits of manganese but mining activities in this area are restricted by law.

The council also said it would conduct further study before considering the applications of small-scale mining operators.
The TWMC is composed of the religious sector, National Economic Development Authority, National Commission of Indigenous Peoples, Department of Interior and Local Government, Army, police, mayors of the cities of Cabadbaran and Butuan and of the towns of RTR in Agusan del Norte and Sibagat in Agusan del Sur and the Butuan City Water District.

E-trading for Mindanao veggie industry urged

Posted on 09 Aug 2010 at 9:22am |

http://dateline.ph/?p=5224

BUTUAN CITY (MindaNews/08 August) – There is a need for Mindanao’s vegetable industry to go into electronic trading to address marketing problems besetting farmers and traders, said a study presented at the 7th Mindanao Vegetable Congress on August 4 to 5 at the Almont Hotel’s Inland Resort here.

According to the presentation made by Allan Bacho, an agriculturist at the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD) of the Department of Agriculture in Northern Mindanao, electronic trading will address problems of unstable prices, buyers’ dictating the price, transportation cost and absence of price information.

The study, presented on August 5, was dubbed: “Developing a vegetable e-trading: Characterization from Vegetable Marketing Practices in Northern Mindanao, Philippines.”

Bacho said the advantages of e-trading include price integration across markets, price transparency, price reliability, and time-bound price quotations.

He added e-trading will benefit not just one sector but all sectors — buyers, farmers, and consumers alike.

Traders are expected to have efficient buying and selling prices. Farmers, too, are assured of price transparency.

Consumers, on the other hand, are assured of fair prices, which could possibly lead to higher consumption, based on his presentation a copy of which was furnished to MindaNews by the Caraga Rafid (Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Division).

Based on statistics cited by Bacho and two other colleagues from AMAD, Mindanao produces 17 percent of the country’s vegetable production, slightly higher than the 11 percent produce by farmers in the Visayas.

Luzon produces at least 73 percent of the country’s vegetable output.

The vegetable industry is facing both production and marketing problems, Bacho said.

Among the marketing problems cited in the study is the high concentration of vegetable trading with wholesaler, assembler-wholesaler, wholesaler-retailer and financier-wholesaler.

The study, a survey research conducted among 1080 farmer-respondents from Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental and Lanao del Norte, looked into the production and trading of 13 vegetables: tropical (ampalaya, stringbean, eggplant, squash, and okra) and semi-temperate (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carrot, lettuce, sweet pepper, sweet pea, and tomato).

The study found out that the average age of vegetable farmers is 44.7 years old with average farming experience of 11.4 years. It said most of the farmers plant all-year round.

Seventy-six percent of sale was done through delivery. Except for okra and lettuce, vegetables fetch higher prices when delivered than picked up.

The study found out that most of the vegetable buyers are wholesalers and they control the prices.

The group proposed that in developing the vegetable e-trading, the industry must build on existing vegetable trading centers or “bagsakan” trading posts and work with traders, farmers and farmers’ association and local agriculture technicians.

Bacho told hundreds of participants of the congress that there is a need to define entry and sustainability strategies of vegetable e-trading through brainstorming, leveling up, and fine tuning of concepts to adapt to local dynamics of trading and production.

Among the salient sub-themes in the congress were Climate Change and the Vegetable Industry, Innovation on Production and Marketing, and Market Opportunities.

Another highlight of the congress was business matching between farmers groups and buyers from Luzon, Cebu, and Leyte.

Runolfo B. Villarante, one of the presenters under “Innovations on Production and Marketing” encouraged participants to shift to organic farming as one alternative vegetable production technology.

Villarante, president of the Salvacion Vegetable Growers Association of Bayugan, Agusan del Sur said his method requires lesser cost but gives higher yield aside from being environment-friendly and healthy to the body.

The Caraga High Value Vegetable Cluster Inc. organized the 7th Mindanao Vegetable Congress with the theme “Sustaining the Gains of the Vegetable Industry in Mindanao Amidst New Challenges.” (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)

Philippines’ top emerging business destinations named

By Michael Kho Lim, Contributor

08/08/2010

http://www.tribuneonline.org/life/20100808lif1.html

People who are fond of going to the more popular destinations of the Philippines like Boracay, Puerto Galera, Cebu, Davao among others are encouraged to travel to the equally beautiful but not much visited places in the country.

The Department of Tourism (DoT) and the Philippine Tour Operations Association (PHILTOA) recently announced their list of and awarded several cities across the country the distinction of being the “top emerging business destinations” of the year. To be considered under the list, the destination must meet all the criteria of having good accessibility, communication network, availability of meeting facilities and standard accommodation.

“These emerging destinations are perfect for corporate travelers and holidaymakers,” says PHILTOA president Cesar Cruz. “Each place has something unique to offer, and we’re hoping that more and more people understand the fact that the Philippines has what it takes to be one of the world’s premier travel destinations.”

Luzon

In the Ilocos region (Region I), the cities of Laoag and Dagupan are recognized for their heritage sites and beaches. Laoag is home to one of the biggest cathedrals in the country, St. Williams’ Cathedral, where the Sinking Bell Tower can be seen. On the other hand, Dagupan or the “land of the milkfish (bangus)” is also known for its historical landmarks and pristine beaches.

In the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the La Trinidad Valley in Benguet is famous for its vegetable terraces that it earned the name “Salad bowl of the Philippines,” and later because of its magnificent strawberry fields gave it the title of “Strawberry fields of the Philippines.”

In the Cagayan Valley Region (Region II), Palaui Island of Sta. Ana, Cagayan is worth visiting for its rich ecosystem of bodies of water and diverse group of plants and animals. It was declared as a marine reserve in 1994 and perfect for people who love outdoor adventures such as snorkeling, diving, fishing, hiking, and camping.

In the Central Luzon region (Region III), Baler and Zambales are included in the list. Baler boasts of a rich history lying beneath the walls of the Baler Catholic Church, and is perfect for surfing because of Baler Bay’s nine-foot waves. On the other hand, Zambales is proud of its white sand beaches such as the Anawangin cove, and diving spots where 35 World War II Japanese ships can be found. One can also go on a mango tour and pick some of the sweetest mangoes available. The Guinnes Book of World Record awarded Zambales in 1995 for producing the sweetest mangoes in the world.

In the National Capital Region, Taguig City joins the list of the emerging destinations for its various choices of food, shopping and entertainment at the Serendra, Bonifacio High Street and Market! Market!

In the Calabarzon region (Region IV-A), the city of San Juan in Batangas is acknowledged for its numerous white sand beaches and diving spots. Meanwhile, Marinduque in the Mimaropa region (Region IV-B) is awarded for keeping its cultural traditions and world-class resort. It is known for the Moriones festival where locals march around the town in costumes and masks re-enacting the Roman soldiers during Biblical times. Marinduque is also home to the famous Bellarocca Island Resort and Spa.

In the Bicol region (Region V), the cities of Sorsogon and Naga complete the list for Luzon. Known as the “Switzerland of the East” because of its rolling hills and valleys, Sorsogon is also famous for its firefly tour and whale shark (butanding) interaction in the town of Donsol. On the other hand, Naga City in Camarines Sur is well-known for its historical churches and passion plays in the town of Buhi. Meanwhile, the CamSur Watersports Complex is praised for its world-class sports facilities.

Visayas

In the Western Visayas region (Region VI), Silay City is recognized for its preserved ancestral houses and for being the center for culture in the Visayas. It is the birthplace of National Artist Leandro Locsin and Hiligaynon playwright Miguela Locsin Montelibano, and home to the San Diego Pro-Cathedral.

In the Central Visayas region (Region VII), Dumaguete City is best identified with the region’s best universities such as Silliman University, nearby islands of Sumilon and Apo, and several white sand beaches and dive sites.

In the Eastern Visayas region (Region VIII), the city of Catarman in Northern Samar provides serenity to the traveler stressed out from the life in the metro. One can visit different lighthouses and churches, go hiking, island hopping, and whale and bird watching.

Mindanao

In the Zamboanga Peninsula region (Region IX), the city of Dapitan boasts of historical treasures of Dr. Jose Rizal and landmarks such as Talisay, Dapitan Bay, and the white sand beaches of Aliguay and Selinog Islands.

In the northern Mindanao region (Region X), Cagayan de Oro City is home to the Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village, Museum of Three Cultures, Monigue Cave, and Macahambus Adventure Park, where travelers can enjoy a lot of outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting, kayaking, rappelling and ziplining. Cagayan de Oro is also known as the “City of Golden Friendship” because of its very amiable people.

In the Davao region (Region XI), the Island Garden City of Samal offers paradise-like coves and beaches, not to mention great diving spots in Talikud and Ligid islands, the 224-hectare mariculture park, the bat sanctuary, and the Sanipaan Shoal.

In the Socsargen region (Region XII), the city of Sarangani presents a quiet paradise of fine white sand beaches such as the Sarangani Bay, various mystical caves, raging waterfalls and flourishing rainforests.

In the Caraga region (Region XIII), Butuan City is considered as the historical Mecca of the Philippines and home to several festivals such as the Abayan Festival, the Kahimunan Festival and the Adlaw Hong Festival. The city also boasts of the Butuan Regional Museuem, Agusan River (the deepest river that runs through the city), Cubi Cubi Beach, Tinago Beach, Mount Mayapay, and provides good access to the surfing capital of Siargao.
Lastly, in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), one can enjoy the thriving ecosystem of the coastal province of Tawi-Tawi such as natural zoos and paradise-like beaches.

Biyahe Exchange Program

This joint project of DoT and PHILTOA is part of the Biyahe Exchange Program, a one-on-one business matching program between corporate buyers and travel sellers where corporate incentive tours and meeting packages will be offered.

Vista Land expanding to 18 more provinces

LISTED PROPERTY giants Vista Land and Lifescapes, Inc. and Robinsons Land Corp. continue to be in expansion mode in anticipation of higher demand from their target markets.
In particular, Vista Land, the holding firm of Senator Manuel B. Villar, will tap 18 new provinces for residential projects for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“Vista Land is doubling its reach to 37 provinces by expanding into 18 more provinces,” the firm said in a statement yesterday.

Target areas include Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija, Batangas City, Lucena in Quezon, Ormoc in Leyte, and Butuan in Agusan del Norte.

The company’s strategy of building “vertical residences” and provincial expansion is suited to OFWs, which account for 60% of annual revenues, Vista Land President Benjamarie N. Serrano said.

“There was no slowdown in the market for homes among OFWs despite the global economic crisis, since the majority of them were not adversely affected,” Ms. Serrano said.

She noted that the company’s 33-year-old affordable housing brand Camella attracted OFWs during the downturn.

Vista Land operates under five brands -- Brittany that sells house-and-lot units for as much as P9 million each, Crown Asia for homes priced P3.5 million to P9 million, Camella Homes for homes priced P3.5 million and below, Communities Philippines that sells Camella Homes in the provinces, and condominium arm Vista Residences.

The company is aiming for around P3 billion in profits this year, up from P2.6 billion last year. Shares in Vista Land, whose profits rose by a tenth to P694 million in the first quarter amid higher sales, fell to P2.38 each yesterday from P2.41 each on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Gokongwei-led Robinsons Land has launched a new high-end residential townhouse in Parañaque that can generate a minimum P1.172 billion in sales.

The three-hectare Woodsville Residences will allot 1.5 hectares for open spaces and amenities, and will have a total of 226 townhouse units.

“We expect to start construction late this year. The first units will be delivered by December 2014,” Mybelle Aragon-GoBio, vice-president for business development of Robinsons Land, said in a briefing.

Woodsville Residences is adjacent to Woodsville Mansions that has about 100 units per floor.

The property developer wants to attract “start-up” families with a combined household income of P150,000 a month.

The price of a 68.30-square-meter unit is P5.19 million. A 106.34-sq.-m. unit is priced P6.32 million.

Shares in Robinsons Land, whose profits dropped by 2.78% to P926.92 million in the first quarter, increased to P14.68 each yesterday from P14.66 each on Friday. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

Agusan congressional bet spent only P1,000 for May 10 polls
GMANews.TV - Tuesday, August 10SendIM StoryPrint

BUTUAN CITY – An independent candidate in Agusan del Norte could have been the lowest spender among all the contenders in the May 10 polls as he claimed to have spent only P1,000 for his political campaign.

Agusan del Norte’s second congressional district candidate Jorge Maceda Lumongsod claimed in a sworn statement that he submitted to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) that he spent only P1,000 during the 60-day campaign period for the May 10 elections. He also claimed not to have received a single centavo in political contributions.

On the other hand, the expenditures of Lumongsod’s rivals— former Carmen, Agusan del Norte Mayor Jovitte Calo and former Agusan del Norte Governor Maria Angelica Rosdell Amante— were in the hundreds of thousands of pesos. Amante who emerged as the winner, said her total expenditures and contributions amounted to P332,252 while Independent bet Jovitte Calo said hers was P250,000. Amante claimed that out of the total amount she spent for the elections, P150,000 came from her own pocket while P182,252.80 came from contributions. Calo for her part claimed in her sworn statement that P60,000 came from her own pocket while P190,000.00 was from contributions. Meanwhile, Liberal Party congressional bet for Agusan del Norte’s first district, Angelo Jimenez, former administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) claimed in his sworn statement that he spent P25,574 from his own pocket and received no contributions.

His lone rival, who emerged as the winner, incumbent First District Agusan del Norte Rep. Jose “Joboy" Aquino II of Lakas-KAMPI, claimed in his sworn statement that he spent P545,000 for the May elections. Aquino claimed P175,000 came from his own pocket while P340,000 came from donations or contributions.

On the gubernatorial race, Lakas-KAMPI Agusan del Norte gubernatorial bet incumbent Governor Erlpe John Amante, who emerged as the winner, claimed that he spent P398,752.80 for the May elections. Amante is the brother of Congresswoman Amante. According to the Comelec office in Agusan del Norte, Amante’s lone rival for the gubernatorial post, Independent bet Roger Patanaom, has not yet filed his sworn statement of expenditures and contributions, a requirement for all candidates.

Agusan del Norte has one chartered city and 10 municipalities whose total number of registered voters is 176,438. –VVP, GMANews.TV

On the drawing board is the link that we intend to develop with the business sector – the processors, manufacturer, traders, tourism and service shops operators – in our city. We need each other especially with the impending rise of the mall at the old public market site and our quest to have more agro-industries and other economic activities in our city.

New Policies Address Pressing Needs

In its 5th Regular Session conducted August 03, 2010, the 12th Sangguniang Panlungsod enacted crucial measures for the further development of the city in different respects.

It enacted SP Resolution No. 66-2010, which requested the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board Central Office to re-establish a Butuan City-based HLURB Field Office for the entire Caraga Region. This is a countermove to the national order decreed on June 01, 2010, which merged the local field office and that of Region XII based in Pagadian City with the field office of Region X in Cagayan de Oro City.

This move was made so to maintain the efficiency of executing housing and subdivision development projects within the city and the entire Caraga Reigon, which so far has been compromised due to the many transactions HLURB Region X Field Office has been facing from three different regions.

Another measure adopted was SP Resolution No. 67-2010, which authorized the hiring of a consultant to help the city revise its Comprehensive Land Use Plan and Zoning Ordinance.

With the presence of a high-caliber consultant deeply involved in this tedious and most vital work, the city will be better assured that it can maximize the benefits to be derived from its land resources, without prejudice to the environment and other crucial considerations.

Finally, the Council has enacted SP Resolution No. 68-2010, which ratified Mayor Amante’s signature in a Memorandum of Agreement with the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), represented by President Josef T. Yap, which was perfected on July 29, 2010.

PIDS has been offering libraries of local government units and universities and colleges throughout the country a PIDS Corner, a mind-enriching repository of knowledge vital to many stakeholders, free of charge. Once open to the public, it will be a rich resource area of reading materials and research outputs, such as books, journals, discussion papers, policy notes, newsletters, et al, that educators, students, and any knowledge-hungry individuals can browse on for free.

Apart from this, the PIDS will furnish it with new materials from time to time; regularly inform the library of resources available online at the official PIDS website to complement with existing information at the PIDS corner; and possibly provide a computer to aid students and researchers in their research needs.

From its end, the City Government shall prepare a special PIDS Corner equipped with shelves for its materials to be properly placed, catalogued, and displayed; shall keep them in good condition with diligent upkeep; disseminate to the public its availability for people to peruse its existing reading materials; and provide the PIDS a short annual report on the usage and access made of the PIDS materials for both parties to determine their usefulness and relevance.

As knowledge is power, this PIDS Corner will be one helpful addition to the learning empowerment of the local stakeholders.

Meet Our New City Administrator: Mdme. LEAH A. MENDOZA

City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante Jr. appointed our new City Administrator in the person of Madame Leah Amante-Mendoza. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) by profession, she has been in the government service for 19 years at the Commission on Audit (COA) where she rose from the ranks starting as an Auditing Examiner until her retirement as Assistant Regional Director.

The wife of Atty. Celso P. Mendoza, mother of five successful children and grandmother of several healthy grandkids, Ma'am Leah graduated valedictorian at the Agusan National High School and magna cum laude at Silliman University with a degree of BS Business Administration. She may look frail in her diminutive figure but behind that lies a strong-willed person determined to implement the policies and programs of the new administration of City Mayor Amante Jr.
Equipped with her expertise in reviewing and auditing government transactions, Ma'am Leah is very much competent to oversee and administer the daily operation of the city government bureaucracy as the alter ego of the Local Chief Executive.

With these credentials, the Sangguniang Panlungsod unanimously confirmed her appointment.

To Ma'am Leah, congratulations and welcome to the City Government community!

Two CSU researchers joined the seminar-workshop on Theory Development hosted by Jose Rizal Memorial State University in Zamboanga del Norte last July 14 – 17, 2010.

Caraga State University was represented by two active researchers namely Dr. Nelia S. Raganas from the College of Science Education (CSE) and Mr. Cale P. Pineda, a faculty member of the Mathematics Department of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the team leader for the Basic Sciences and Mathematics Program of the RDE Core Group.

The workshop was in coordination with the Philippine Association of Institutions for Research, (PAIR) Inc., intended for the different Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mindanao.

Dr. Roberto N. Padua, the former CHED Commissioner and a consultant of the Statistical Research and Training Center, was the guest speaker and at the same time the trainer of the said workshop. He gave relevant ideas and information on the application and employment of some of the applied multivariate analyses and the significance of these analyses and relationship to theory generation.

The highlight of the 4-day activity was to come up with a publishable paper to be examined and reviewed by experts of that field. The trainees underwent smooth flow of series of lectures which includes variable associations, regression methods, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis. In the last two days of the workshop, participants enjoyed their stay at Dakak Park and Beach Resort, the other venue for discussion and presentation of outputs.

“Truly, it was a place for sharing of information and brilliant ideas and guiding researchers to proper and appropriate application of statistical analyses for theory development and generation”, Mr. Pineda said. “This fruitful event guarantees more productive researchers for the benefit of humankind

Agusan Sur agsam weavers get P1.6-M deal

Butuan City (10 August) -- Residents from a mountainous and almost inaccessible area in Agusan del Sur are busy filling up an order worth P1.6 million from a Cebu-based exporter.

The Lucac, Bitan-agan, Das-agan (LUBIDA) Agsam Handicraft Weavers Association clinched said deal from 33Point 3 Exports, Inc.

This big break happened to LUBIDA's agsam basket when it was showcased during the Yamang Mindanao Fair at General Santos City early this year. The product caught the attention of Mr. Jenifer Cruz, owner of 33Point3 Exports, Inc. With a keen eye for exceptional products, he was optimistic the agsam basket would make it big in the international scene. True enough, a US-based buyer got interested in marketing the product in its chain of specialty stores.

LUBIDA's deal involved producing some 10,428 pieces of agsam baskets which it delivers to its big brother on a weekly basis.

Mr. Cruz is a "big brother" identified under the Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) Subcontracting Project for Innovation or SPIN.

SPIN is a strategy to trickle down economic growth to the poorest of the poor. It encourages entrepreneurship specifically in former conflict areas. The big brother program matches exporters to subcontractors in the rural areas so that people in these areas can immediately generate income.

Mr. Cruz collaborated with DTI-Caraga and DTI Agusan del Sur Provincial Office to embark on Skills Enhancement Training for Agsam Craft Production right at the raw material source at Barangay Lucac, San Francisco, Agusan del Sur. The 4-day skills enhancement training was attended by some seventy (70) weavers of LUBIDA Agsam Handicrafts Weavers Association and eleven (11) from Lanuza, Surigao del Sur. To ensure quality output, Mr. Cruz brought with him a trusted product designer Mr. Nick Mortejo. The training proved successful as the trainers were able to execute the four (4) designs/samples of the buyer and according to the quality standards.

More trainings on agsam basket making are on-going in other areas of the region. The big brother plans to expand coverage and train more skilled workers also in Agusan del Norte and Bislig City. (DTI-Caraga/PIA-Caraga)

Caraga Product Depot: From mere display to business activity center

Butuan City (10 August) -- The regional product display center dubbed Caraga Product Depot which showcases the region's food, furniture, and arts & crafts sector products now also hosts related business activities.

It has become a negotiation area for interested buyers of Caraga products, a business meeting venue for the region's entrepreneurs and a training area for would-be entrepreneurs and those who want to go into other product lines.

The depot located along the Butuan City's main highway was established to allow tourists, both local and foreign, to have a regular area to shop for pasalubong and souvenir items. It now has some forty-four (44) micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) locators.

Alongside the depot is the Caraga CLEEP (Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program) Station. This space which is equipped with common service facilities such as flexi-wrap packaging machine, wi-fi internet connection and business info materials is open to all Caraga entrepreneurs.

The product depot and the CLEEP station spread is also a venue for trainings and workshops such as the Kiddie Go Negosyo Summer Workshops on coco beads fashion accessories making, ornamental fish culture, painting and kitchen camp and cooking demonstration which were held for a very minimal registration fee. The workshops were aimed at orienting the children on the basics of entrepreneurship by letting them experience the actual business processes of production, marketing, costing and pricing.

The place which was formally opened to the public last February 22, 2010 during the Caraga Week Celebration recently, started its weekend garage sale for bargain seekers. (DTI-Caraga/PIA-Caraga)

Caraga State U to host 2nd Pangasius techno demo pond

Butuan City (10 August) -- A second techno-demo pond for Pangasius will be established soon at the Caraga State University (CSU) campus in Ampayon, Butuan City.

Pangasius, a family of catfish, is a specie that is primarily farmed in Asia with Vietnam as the established major exporter.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Caraga Regional Director Brielgo Pagaran said Pangasius farming is currently promoted in the region because of the reported growing demand in the domestic market and as replacement for current imports being made from Vietnam.

The CSU techno demo pond project kicked off with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by the President of the Caraga State University, Dr. Joanna Cuenca and BMEG In-charge for Mindanao, Neil Jabagat. Signing as stakeholders and providers of technical support to the project are Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Director Nerio Casil and DTI RD Pagaran.

The techno demo pond inside the CSU campus is expected to benefit agriculture and fishery students by providing them the opportunity to gain practical learning by actual exposure to the culture, management and operation of the Pangasius pond.

The said facility will also host Pangasius Techno Briefings which were also conducted every Friday at the 1st Pangasius Techno Demo Pond at Den's Aqua Farm in Libertad, Butuan City. The briefings are aimed to ensure that the appropriate culture practices are passed on to growers, provide interested growers with a "model" to benchmark their own operation, and provide would-be growers/investors with the opportunity to clarify and air their concerns relevant to farming pangasius such as technology, product quality, market and project viability.

Formal launching for the 2nd demo pond is set within the 3rd quarter of this year. (DTI-Caraga/PIA-Caraga)

RuMEPP aims to help poor entrepreneurs and rural families in the country by providing them access to credit and other financial services coupled with business development services such as capacity-building, market linkages and product development.

The program is implemented in the poorest 19 provinces in five of the poorest regions in the country, focusing on areas with the highest potential for enterprise development. "CReATE Food" to create food village

Butuan City (10 August) -- A food village will soon be established in the region.

The "village" will basically house common service food processing facilities that are compliant to the requirements of the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD). The latter is a shared need among local food processors who find it difficult to pass BFAD's licensing requirements due to the high investment needed to put the right facilities individually.

This project is being pushed by the Caraga Regional Association of Traders and Entrepreneurs in Food or CReATE Food, an organization of food processors in the region. As of this writing, negotiations are underway for the final location of CReATE Food's food village.

The project is fully supported by the WE CAN in Visayas and Caraga (Working on the Enhancement of the Chamber and Association Network) and the AFOS Foundation. AFOS Foundation is the implementing arm of the Federation of Catholic Entrepreneurs (BKU) which was appointed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to implement the chamber and association development project which will run from August 2009 to July 2012 here in the region.

According to Dr. Stephan Kunz of WE CAN and AFOS and project team member Teri Pono of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce & Industry CReATE Food as a partner-recipient of the project will enjoy trainings and capability building opportunities, consultancy services and funds for the establishment of their food village. In addition, Engr. Roderico Cane, CReATE Food President is scheduled for a six-month training and exposure to food processing industries in Germany.

Other project partners who committed support to the project are the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). DOST committed to provide a grant for the facility's equipment, laboratory services for the nutri facts assessment, trainings on food safety, consultancy services and packaging and labeling design assistance and possibly negotiate a 3,000 square meter area at the Caraga State University campus. TESDA's support would include re-skilling or upskilling trainings and capability building of the members of the organization, provision of certified skilled manpower thru their qualified tech-voc graduates, members of the maintenance team for its ancillary services (plumbers, welders, electricians, aircon/cold storage technicians) and skilled manpower during the construction stage of the proposed village.

CReATE Food is the formalized or registered group from the processed food industry cluster. It currently operates the OTOP Pasalubong Center located at the ground floor of Gaisano Mall, this city. (DTI-Caraga/PIA-Caraga)

Yes, 200 photos lang ang limit sa Flickr. Once you reach 200, you can no longer upload photos unless you upgrade to a PRO account. In a PRO account, you'll get unlimited uploads and storage.

You can try Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/) or Picasa (http://picasaweb.google.com/). ;)

For FREE users, Photobucket only offers 500 megabytes of storage while Picasa offers 1 gigabyte. So, I would suggest Picasa.

Vista Land earns P1.44 billion in first half

http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=602105&publicationSubCategoryId=66

By Zinnia B. Dela Peña (The Philippine Star) Updated August 13, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0)

MANILA, Philippines - Vista Land & Lifescapes Inc., the holding company for majority of the real estate holdings of the family of Sen. Manuel Villar, said yesterday its net earnings rose 12 percent in the first half this year to P1.44 billion on higher revenues from real estate sales.

In a briefing, Vista Land senior vice-president for finance Ricardo B. Tan Jr. said the firm booked P5.5 billion in revenues from January to June this year, up from P4.9 billion the previous year-period.

In the second quarter alone, the company posted a net profit of P745 million or an increase of 13 percent from the year-earlier level of P658 million, as revenues rose 12 percent to P5.48 billion.

Tan disclosed that sales take up expanded 29 percent to P10.2 billion on strong demand for the company’s projects.

“The continued rise in our real time sales this year confirms that the property sector has emerged from the crisis and is now on an upswing. Vista Land has responded swiftly to the improving market sentiment and already has in place an aggressive project pipeline for this year,” he said.

“We have also begun to draw up plans to develop commercial areas around some of our key developments, which will not only generate recurring revenues for the company, but enhance the value and attractiveness of our residential projects as well,” Tan added.

Encouraged by the company’s strong financial results, Tan expressed confidence that 2010 will be a banner year with net earnings seen to hit about P2.8 billion while sales take-up are forecast to reach P20 billion from P16.6 billion a year earlier. Revenues, on the other hand, are projected to grow to P11 billion by the end of the year.

During the period under review, Vista Land launched 19 projects around the country with an estimated total value of around P12 billion. The aggressive launch of new projects was attributed to the steady remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“With about 60 percent of our revenues coming from the OFW market, we remain confident about our company’s prospects. Although many developers are attempting to tap the OFW market and compete in the more affordable housing market where demand has been stable, we believe Vista Land has a strong competitive advantage given the track record and popularity of our Camella brand. In addition, Vista Land by far has the broadest presence in the Philippines among all the major property developers,” Tan said.

Vista Land is the holding company of five business units: Brittany, Crown Asia, Camella Homes, Communities Philippines and its condominium development subsidiary, Vista Residences.

As of end-June this year, Vista Land had total assets of P54.6 billion and has earmarked around P10.2 billion for its capital expenditures this year, of which P4.3 billion has been spent so far.

Tan said the company may raise at least P1 billion from the debt market. “We’re holding bilateral discussions with some financial insitutions and looking at over a billion pesos,” he said.

Vista Land is doubling its reach to 37 provinces by expanding into 18 more sites which include Cabanatuan, Batangas, Lucena, Ormoc and Butuan.
The move is part of a strategy to consolidate its franchise as the country’s largest homebuilder, with new projects to be launched in the next few years.

Feature: Revitalized "People's Day" brings gov't closer to Butuanons
By Robert E. Roperos

Butuan City (11 August) -- It was a fine Wednesday morning on August 11, 2010 when Butuanons flocked at the Butuan City Hall to avail of the services of the new and revitalized "People's Day" dubbed as "Adlaw Hong Katawhan".

True as the title of the program depicts, Butuanons who are listening to the inauguration ceremony have high hopes that with the new and rejuvenated program of the present administration in the city, problems and concerns of every constituent will be addressed.

In an interview with one of the recipients in the conduct of the medical mission, Amelita Paredes of Baan Riverside said, the project is an opportunity for poor Butuanons like her to avail of free medical and dental services offered by medical practitioners from both the public and private health sectors.

Paredes said, the medicines which she received is a big help to her considering the high prices of medicines that are available in drug stores in the city.

"Aside from that, I also availed the free medical consultation this morning? So, this project of the city government under the able leadership of Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr. is noteworthy," the teary-eyed Paredes said.

Also, Butuan Chamber of Commerce and Industry President ? Engr. Allan Silor lauded the efforts of the Amante-Fortun administration as he sees this project as a noble and timely as more people are having difficulty in aligning their financial cash flows. "This shows that the city government officials are really bringing the government closer to the people," Silor said.

Earlier, City Administrator Leah Amante-Mendoza, in her message, said that the vision of the new administration is to bring the mountains to the people so that the people will not go anymore to the mountains.

Meanwhile, Vice-Mayor Lawrence Lemuel H. Fortun announced in the middle of the program that in the coming People's Days every Wednesdays, the city government will be catering free legal services to Butuanons.

Vice-Mayor Fortun also assured that his "Free Birth Registration" program which was initiated before when he was still a city councilor here will still be available and is part of the services of the People's Day.

Moreover, Fortun urged the public and private sectors to take part with the project as it promises to serve the Butuanons to the fullest which is the priority concern of their administration.

Adlaw Hong Katawhan (People's Day) is a regular social program of the city government as embodied in Executive Order No. 3 signed by Mayor Amante on August 3, 2010. (PIA-Caraga)

RP’s tourists spots emerge into business destinations

Saturday, 14 August 2010 00:00
Now there are perfect destinations where travelers can mix business with pleasure, relaxation and adventure. Recently, the most beautiful and popular cities and destinations in the Philippines where chosen as “Top Emerging Business Destinations.” Named emerging destinations are: Laoag and Dagupan (Region I), for their heritage sites, and beaches; La Trinidad Valley Cordillera Administration Region (CAR), for its magnificent strawberry fields, vegetable terraces and cut flower industry; Zambales (Region III), a multifaceted destination for beach holidays, mango agri-tourism and sports adventure activities; San Juan, Batangas (Region IV-A) can easily boast endless beautiful beaches and stylized type of resorts; Marinduque (Region IV-B) with its world class resort and rich cultural traditions; Sorsogon of Bicol (Region V) which is synonymous to eco-tourism activities like whale interaction and firefly tour.

In Visayas: Silay City in Negros Occidental (Region VI), for its preserved ancestral houses, rich culinary heritage and newly constructed world class airport; Danao in Bohol (Region VII), the new eco-adventure mecca complemented by nearby white sand beaches and the nature’s wonders of the Chocolate Hills and tarsier; the island destinations of Northern Samar (Region VIII) with its pristine beach areas, rich flora and fauna and iconic natural land formation.

Down south: The Island Garden City of Samal (Region XI), for its paradise-like coves and beaches, eco-adventure sites and activities; Cagayan de Oro City (Region X), not only as gate way to the northern part of Mindanao but also caters to city based-adventure activities; Butuan City (Region XIII) of Caraga is historical mecca of the Philippines with good access to Agusan marshlands and surfing capital of Siargao; Sarangani (Region XII) can always pull a surprise with its beautiful coastlines, diverse cultural heritage and aqua tourism activities; Dapitan City (Region IX) of Zamboanga del Sur, holds one of the historical treasures of Dr. Jose Rizal, complemented by its rustic surroundings and thriving aqua culture industry.

“These places are perfect for corporate travelers and holidaymakers,” says Cesar Cruz, Philippine Tourism Authority president. “Each place has something unique to offer, and we’re hoping that more and more people understand the fact that the Philippines has what it takes to be one of the world’s premier travel destinations.”

The destinations will be featured at the 21st Philippine Travel Mart on September 3 to 5 at the SM Megatrade Halls, as part of the Biyahe Exchange Program, a one-on-one business meeting between corporate buyers and travel sellers where travel adventures, trips, and tours are offered to companies for corporate outings and company incentives.

All set for 9th Baoto Festival in September

by Jocelyn E. Morano

Butuan City (13 August) -- The municipality of Jabonga will again host the annual Baoto Festival fully supported by the provincial government of Agusan del Norte.

The 9th Baoto Festival will be on September 15-18, 2010 to be held at Great Lake Resort in the municipality of Jabonga, with a total of 200,000 pesos cash prize.

Jabonga is one of the 11 towns in the province of Agusan del Norte gifted with scenery as it is embraced by mountain ranges, surrounded by lakes perfect for the said festival.

The highlight of the festival features the 30K paddling marathon which is said to be the longest paddling race in the Philippines.

Provincial Information Officer Edgar Palarca Jr. announced, that the baoto race shall also include baoto race without an outrigger, regatta using only the sail made from indigenous material, and the single and double Slalom for men and women category.

The winner for the 30 kilometer marathon race is 40,000 pesos, while a prize of 36,000 pesos will be awarded to whoever will be declared 2nd place and 16,000 pesos for the 3rd prize winner.

For the regatta race, aside from the cash prize for 1st placer, the provincial government will give additional cash for the Best Sail Design.

Palarca added, "There will be short races that will cover a distance of 100 meters and for this year's festival, the triathlon race will start with a swimming, followed by boat paddling and a run to the finish line where a cash prize of 6,000 pesos awaits the winner. The bicycle part was omitted."

To create environmental awareness, organizers will also be conducting tree planting activity to the participants of skills training for canoeing, caving and mountaineering. (dxBN-Radyo ng Bayan Butuan/PIA-Caraga)

Agusan del Norte eyes NAMCYA competition

by Jocelyn E. Morano

Butuan City (13 August) -- The Schools Division of Agusan del Norte concluded its division elimination and still waits for the confirmation from the Central Office whether or not they qualify to participate in the Mindanao Regional Cluster I Competition of the 2010 National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA).

The Education Supervisor of Music and Arts, Miss Rayrocina Abao announced, South Cabadbaran District won in the children's choir category while the Magallanes National High School won in the Philippine traditional Ensemble category.

"For this year, there won't be a regional competition because all division schools will be required to submit an entry by sending a video presentation," Supervisor Abao said.

It would be the pride and honor for the province of Agusan del Norte if the delegation qualifies and compete during the Mindanao Regional Cluster I competition to be held in Davao.

The winner will represent Mindanao in the national finals.

The 2010 NAMCYA competitions will be held this November at the CCP Main Theater as the National Commission for Culture and the Arts shall once again open doors for Filipino talents.

Ms. Abao added the competition will help hone the aesthetic abilities of the youths especially in the field of singing and dancing.

This year's theme is "Musika at Sining: Diwa ng Sangkatauhan" (Music and the Arts: The soul of Humanity).

According to Ms. Abao, a lot of Filipino talents were recognized in the international competition because at an early age, these young talents are developed to their maximum potential.

NAMCYA has been a principal instrument in discovering major music talents from all over the country.

Its project involves some 1 million musicians, trainers and administrators, in a long and tedious process of selecting the best among them from all sixteen regions, annually. (dxBN-Radyo ng Bayan Butuan/PIA-Caraga)
