Members of a tribe in Mindanao are now preparing one of the Philippines' tallest trees to become the country's tallest Christmas tree.
The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines reported Saturday the Manobo tribe is decorating the giant Toog tree with 1,001 Christmas lights.
Toog tree in Alegria village, San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, listed as the world's 3rd tallest tree will be launched on October 18 as the country’s tallest Christmas tree. by Margarita Candido.
"But before the official 'switching on' of the thousand-and-one Christmas lights decorating the natural-grown giant of a tree, the tribes folk will first perform a ritual asking the permission of the spirits to allow them to 'energize' the tree, which once grew in abundance all over Agusan del Sur," the CBCP said in its news site Saturday.
The lighting of the giant Christmas tree will signal the official start of the Christmas season in Barangay Alegria, which hosts the “third tallest tree in the world."
Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza is expected to formally unveil the Toog Christmas Tree, touted as the tallest Christmas Tree in the country.
The Toog tree, which grows just beside the national highway in Alegria, was recorded to be 65 meters (280 feet) high.
Following its unveiling on October 18, it will officially surpass Tagum’s famous Christmas Tree, which once held the record as the Philippines’ tallest Christmas Tree at 153 feet.
"Gov. Plaza has ordered his chief-of-staff to have the tree officially measured," the CBCP said.
From afar, commuters can easily see the Toog tree.
Mayor Jenny de Asis said the “Toog Christmas Tree project" is the initiative of the officials of Barangay Alegria.
Following the publication by a Cagayan de Oro City-based local daily of the picture of the giant tree, hundreds of commuters and visitors and passersby would stop and stare at it in awe. Some even had their pictures taken before the giant tree.
The Toog tree (Petersianthus quadrialatus) or Philippine Rosewood is also known as Kapullan in the Visayas region or Magtalisai in the Samar-Leyte area. It belongs to the Lecythidaceae family.
It is a deciduous, medium-sized to fairly large tree that grows up to more than 40 meters tall and more than 100 cm in diameter.
The trunk is straight, cylindrical, branch-less with a length of 20-30 meters.
In the Philippines, it is considered a vanishing timber.
Alegria barangay chairman Solomon Rufila believes the tree has survived for more than one hundred years and is considered a living memento from the past and a testimony to the love of the people of Alegria to protect the environment, a local reporter on Saturday told GMANews.TV.
Rufila and his brother Engineer Cesar Rufila introduced the idea to the barangay council that the Toog tree be decorated as a living Christmas tree.
The council accepted the idea and solicited funds from businessmen and other wealthy individuals throughout San Francisco to buy the trimmings and other gadgets to beautify the tree.
Work on the tree began on the second week of September with the festooning of different colored light bulbs around it. A villager named Egie volunteered to lug the wire with the light bulbs and climbed the three to the top where he spent two hours to complete his task. Below, some 30 other volunteers wound and strung the small light bulbs.
The initial lighting of the 420 sets of 100 Christmas light bulbs of various colors was made on September 27.
On that day, Manobo datus and their abyans led by their most influential leader Datu Bardo Bando, popularly known as Kumander Kalbo, presided over a tribal ritual to invoke the good will of the spirits living on the tree.
Kagawad Trinidad S. Cuyubao told a local newspaper Periodico News Network (PNN) that hundreds of people within and outside the village turned out en masse to gaze at the blinking colorful display that night of Sept 27. — with a report by Margarita Candido/LBG, GMANews.TV

Jollibee to acquire 70% of Mang Inasal
By Yahoo! Southeast Asia Editors – October 18th, 2010

October 18, 2010 – Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC), the Philippines’ largest food service company, disclosed today that the terms of its unsolicited offer to acquire 70% of Mang Inasal Philippines, Inc. (MIPI), owner and operator of the Mang Inasal restaurant chain, have been unconditionally and irrevocably accepted by Injap Investments, Inc. (Injap), parent company of MIPI.
JFC’s unsolicited offer included the principal terms of the share purchase agreement, which will be signed within 30 days, subject to completion of JFC’s due diligence. On closing of the transaction, JFC will own 70% of MIPI, with 30% remaining with Injap. There is no material relationship between the sellers and JFC or its directors, officers and affiliates.
JFC’s Chief Finance Officer and Vice President Mr. Ysmael V. Baysa disclosed that the purchase price is estimated to amount to approximately 3 Billion Pesos, subject to the results of JFC’s legal, financial and tax due diligence. Part of the consideration in the amount of 200 Million Pesos had been paid by JFC as initial payment. Thereafter, 90% of the purchase price (less than the initial payment) will be paid on closing, with the remaining 10 % paid over 3 years from closing.
On an annual basis, JFC’s purchase of 70% of Mang Inasal is estimated to add 5% to its worldwide system wide sales, 5% to its revenues, and 7% to its net operating income. Mang Inasal will also increase JFC’s store network in the Philippines by 19% and on a worldwide basis by 16%.
JFC’s financial and tax due diligence will be conducted by Pricewaterhouse Coopers – Isla Lipana & Co. with focus on the consolidated audited financial statements of MIPI for the year 2009 and interim period January to June 2010, as audited by KPMG – Manabat Sanagustin & Co., CPAs. Its legal due diligence will be conducted by Romulo Mabanta Buenaventura Sayoc and De Los Angeles.
For purposes of valuation, JFC used several methods, including discounted cash flow method and market-based valuation methods such as EBITDA multiple and Price/Earnings multiple. JFC’s purchase price for Mang Inasal is comparable with the multiples used in its previous acquisitions. JFC has sufficient financial resources to pay for the acquisition in cash that was generated from its operations.
JFC will build shareholder value by growing the sales of Mang Inasal’s existing stores through the application of JFC’s knowledge of consumers and its available recipes and products, continued expansion of Mang Inasal’s store network, cost improvement on its raw materials, and greater operational efficiency by applying JFC’s technology and scale.
It is the intention of JFC to maintain MIPI’s current personnel, subject to their meeting the JFC Group’s organizational standards.
Mang Inasal serves primarily grilled chicken and Filipino food. As of October 18, 2010, the chain consists of a total of 303 stories, of which 24 are company-owned and 279 are franchised. It operates 2 commissaries. MIPI is in a positive net cash position. It has estimated annual total revenues of 2.6 Billion Pesos and system wide sales of 3.8 Billion Pesos.
The JFC Group of Companies operates the Philippines’ largest fast food network. As of September 30, 2010, it had a total of 1578 stores in the country: Jollibee brand with 703, Chow King with 404, Greenwich with 218, Red Ribbon with 215, Delifrance with 23 and Manong Pepe’s with 15. It was also operating 375 stores abroad: Yonghe King in the People’s Republic of China with 185 stores, Jollibee 64 (mainly in the United States with 26, Vietnam with 20, and Brunei with 11), Red Ribbon 38, all in the U.S., Chowking 37 (mostly in the U.S. with 19 and Dubai with 15) and Hong Zhuang Yuan 51 for a total of 1,953 stores worldwide.

development is NOT measured by the "city" tag attached to a place, but to certain measurable factors for it to be classified hence worthy of merit of being called a true city.
e.g. income should be clearly defined....population size requirements....and so territorial size. Growth rates is also I beleived a big factor since a major source of income a city could generate must be sourced from within.
the problem with most provincial town is that politicos have the caprices of reclassifying their towns to bloat their IRA (these towns in the process become IRA dependent at the expense of those existing well entrenched cities).

CABADBARAN, Agusan del Norte – A new Provincial Capitol building is set to rise in this progressive town of Agusan del Norte, it was learned Monday. This developed after the Guingona family donated 13 hectares of land to the local government in this town.
The donated land will be the site of the proposed new Capitol building that will be constructed anytime. It was gathered that the transfer of the Capitol site from Butuan City to this town has already been approved by the House of Representatives under Republic Act (RA) 8811.
The setting up of the building in this town was decided, being the center of Agusan del Norte. When completed, the old 1950’s capitol building in Butuan City will be the provinces’ Capitol Business Park and also site of offices of some line agencies of the government. Agusan del Norte Gov. Erlpe John Amante already mobilized the provinces’ engineering and development divisions for the preparation of the ground works.
Meanwhile, the provincial government of Agusan del Norte unanimously passed a resolution expressing heartfelt gratitude to the Guingona family for donating the land as the site of the new Capitol building. The resolution was authored by Provincial Board member Aquino W. Gambe. (Mike Crismundo)

POEA Finally Opens in Caraga
Written by Ian G. Miculob, NEDA Caraga
Monday, 19 October 2009
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) finally opened its office in Caraga Region on October 1, 2009, almost six years after the Regional Development Council (RDC) passed a resolution calling for POEA establishment in the region.
Responding to the strong lobbying of Congressman Jose “Joboy” S. Aquino, the POEA initially deployed Ms. Marietta M. Bellotindos of POEA-XI to bring services to the region such as the processing of overseas employment certificates of new applicants or returning overseas Filipino workers, provision of legal assistance in applying for overseas employment and identification of licensed recruitment agencies to warn Caragans of illegal recruiters.
Under Resolution No. 43, series of 2003 of the RDC, Caraga pushed for the establishment of the POEA office in the region. The request was reiterated in the RDC Resolution No. 31, series of 2005, together with the request for regional offices/branches of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) National Statistics Coordination Board (NSCB)-Regional Statistics Coordination Unit and the Professional Regulation Office (PRC).
Another resolution was passed in 2002 seeking the establishment of a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) branch in Caraga. The BSP has initiated the acquisition of the lot where the branch shall be erected but there is no target date for the start of construction.
The DFA Caraga unit was opened on May 21, 2008, while the PRC Butuan City unit which is housed at the city hall started operations on May 3, 2007.
Except for some services provided to seafarers which can be availed only in Manila, Caragans inquiring about or processing overseas employment documents can now go to the POEA-Caraga office located in the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration Office at Nimfa Tiu Bldg., J. Rosales St., Butuan City instead of going to neighboring regions or Manila.

regjeex October 20th, 2010, 09:20 AM Mosquito-repellent draperies to be hung soon in Butuan city schools
by Noel B. Najarro
Butuan City (19 October) -- Mosquitoes in some city schools may soon be facing their 'final curtains', and this is not a joke! This is a serious announcement by no less than DOH 13 Regional Director Leonita P. Gorgolon during a recent press conference at her office. She told local media practitioners that an upcoming project of her department is soon to be implemented, which is to hang some chemically-treated draperies in some schools here in Butuan City which can kill alighting mosquitoes.
Director Gorgolon said that this is one of their dengue cases reduction measures, and they planned to implement the project by the end of the year. The DOH chief said that they will be looking at schools in the city with the most number of Dengue cases listed and there they will be hanging the said curtains.
These curtains impregnated with chemical, Gorgolon said, can kill alighting mosquitoes. The curtains according to her are quite costly, but funds for the said project are already approved by their central office in Manila and they are now in the process of bidding the said items. The Director also said that she already had informed the city mayor to be present during the launching and be a partner for the said project.
Butuan City was chosen for the project, Gorgolon said as the city topped the list of the number of suspected dengue cases in the region at 753. The province of Agusan del Sur following it listed only 447 cases. However, even with the highest number of cases listed, there was no recorded mortality. The director credited the said development to good advocacy and dissemination of information.
Meanwhile, Dir. Gorgolon during the same forum, discouraged "fogging" as a means of eliminating mosquitoes. "Actually, the fourth 'S' in our four 'S's campaign against dengue is 'Say No To Fogging'," she clarified.
Local government units according to her had already been informed not to resort to fogging as much as possible, as these activities may only drive mosquitoes existing in a barangay (village) to the next. Fogging, she said, does not kill mosquitoes but only drive them away some 100 to 200 meters from its present habitat when fogged. So fogging activities will only be resorted to as a last option, in cases when there'll be outbreaks.
Nothing really replaces clean surroundings and proper sanitation, Gorgolon said and she assures that the 4 "S" which is to: 1) Search and destroy; 2) Seek immediate consultation; 3) Self protection measures and to 4) Say 'No" to indiscriminate fogging is still the most effective way to fight dengue. regjeex October 20th, 2010, 10:09 AM Big Aqua-Culture Investment to hit Butuan
Butuan City has bright economic prospects to anchor at its shores. This is due to the interest of Greenphil Aqua-Culture and Hydroponics Holding, Inc., through its subsidiary, Caraga Green Aqua Farm and Hydroponics Development Corporation, to establish a comprehensive and modern aquaculture and hydroponics project at Barangay Kinamlutan, Butuan City.
As stated in Greenphil’s Executive Summary, its objectives in implementing this project are to develop and produce high-quality, export-oriented seafood products and fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants in a pristine and controlled environment; to share an equitable microeconomic dividend of the products derived from the project with the concerned Filipino and foreign investors; and to accomplish a joint management with local government authorities and private sector participation in an eco-green environment protection program.
With its gigantic proportions, financing of this project will be done by Greenphil through the support of foreign investors.
As one of the eight targeted project sites, Butuan City will witness the rise of an Aqua-Culture and Hydroponics Farm whose products can be exported to meet the rising global demands. Once operational, this will provide the local community with numerous jobs, as well as boost local income and propel the local fishery industry to global competitiveness.
Butuan City’s mutual interest is solidly sealed, with the adoption of SP Resolution No. 191-2010, A Resolution expressing the willingness of the City Government of Butuan in welcoming the Proposal of Caraga Green Aqua Farm and Hydroponics Development Corporation, a subsidiary of Greenphil Aqua-Culture & Hydroponics Holdings, Inc., to establish its multimillion dollar investment aqua-culture project in Butuan City, subject to compliance of environmental, engineering, existing fishery laws and local ordinances, on October 04, 2010, during the 14th Regular Session of the 12th Sangguniang Panlungsod.

BXU AngelC October 20th, 2010, 03:29 PM Big Aqua-Culture Investment to hit Butuan

BXU AngelC October 20th, 2010, 04:16 PM Critical legislations passed
The 10th Regular Session conducted September 6, 2010 witnessed the enactment of 4 ordinances and 46 resolutions. Of these 50 measures, some proved to be very critical in addressing some big concerns of the city.
In the matter of the burgeoning concern of saw mill operators and wood and logging business financiers in Butuan City, the first measure passed by the 12th Sangguniang Panlungsod was not enough. The Sanggunian discerned that greater authorities than the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Caraga Region and the Philippine National Police – Region XIII should interfere to put and end to the malpractices and abuses committed by the personnel of the Criminal, Investigation, and Detection Group (CIDG) – Caraga Region. Thus, the Sanggunian enacted SP Resolution No. 85-2010, which strongly requests President Aquino through DILG Secretary Jesse M. Robredo to evaluate the performance of the CIDG - Caraga Region, and reorganize its personnel component.
Another concern was the formulation of the Executive – Legislative Agenda (ELA), which the City Government intends to finalize with the technical and facilitative assistance of Father Saturnino Urios University’s (FSUU) Development Center for Local Governance and Integrative Studies and the FSUU Policy, Incorporated, whose services are willingly offered pro bono. To formalize the partnership, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) is to be signed by Butuan City Mayor Amante for the City Government and FSUU President, Rev. Fr. John Christian U. Young for FSUU. This is authorized by the 12th Sangguniang Panlungsod under SP Resolution No. 86-2010.
In infrastructural concerns, the Sanggunian sought for the assistance of Senator Ralph G. Recto to allocate the amount of PhP5,000,000.00 for the rehabilitation of Montilla Boulevard, whose parts have been dilapidated and are needing repair. This petition has been formally stated in SP Resolution No. 87-2010.
Finally, as a way of resolutely establishing a sustainable and effective management of the Agusan River Basin, the Sanggunian adopted SP Resolution No. 128-2010. This measure expresses the intention and willingness of the City Government of Butuan to enter into an Inter-LGU/NGA Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with the Provinces of Agusan del Sur and Compostella Valley and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
With this synergy of efforts, the Agusan River Basin, being a vital source of economic, cultural, social and ecological benefits to the city and the provinces it traverses through, will last for generations and generations.

jsl_bxu1206 October 22nd, 2010, 11:08 AM DAR gives 150 titles to Sibagat farmers
by Joie L. Ceballos
Butuan City (21 October) -- 150 individual Certificates of Land Ownership Award (CLOA) were distributed by the Department of Agrarian Reform to the farmers of Sibagat Agusan del Sur last 14 October 2010. The area covers a total of 244 hectares in the barangays of Afga, Anahawan and Mahayahay, all of Sibagat.
The awards were distributed to 102 male and 48 female ARBs by DAR Regional Director Faisar Mambuay together with Agusan del Sur Governor Adolph Edward G. Plaza, in time for the Governor's 100 days celebration.
Gov. Plaza expressed joy for the farmers and encouraged them to make the land productive. He also thanked DAR for the various interventions that the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) has brought to the province.
RD Mambuay informed both the people and leaders during the gathering that about 1000 hectares in Sibagat are for distribution by the end of the year. " This is part of our commitment to improve our farmers, to improve our communities," says Mambuay.
Sibagat Mayor Thelma Lamanilao was happy of the good news. She hoped that with this land ownership component of CARP, revenue collection will also improve in the days to come.
Also present during the activity was Agusan Sur Vice Governor Santiago Cane and Sibagat Vice Mayor Allan Lañas. (DAR-13/PIA-Caraga)

Government-Private Sector Conference
By Abraham V. Llera
The “1st Government-Private Sector Conference on Our Country’s Economic Prospects Under the Aquino Administration” is all set on November 18, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Xavier Sports & Country Club in Cagayan de Oro City.
Organized in cooperation with Regional Director Loreto T. Bhagwani of DILG R10 and the Oro Chamber of Commerce, this event hopes to gather the region’s 94 mayors and 5 governors and around 100 business leaders to listen to noted economist and Harvard-trained Dr. Bernardo M. Villegas, Senior Vice-President and Dean of the School of Economics of the University of Asia and the Pacific, speak on the shift in global economic power away from the developed economies to the emerging markets.
In the process, Dr. Villegas is expected to show (1) the implications this shift has on the Philippine economy, (2) how the Aquino administration, with its emphasis on good governance, is our best chance to finally claim our place among the N-11 countries, the eleven countries identified by Goldman Sachs as the next emerging economic powers after Brazil, Russia, India, and China, and (3) what the mayors and governors, working with the private sector, could do to help make this forecast a reality.
In other words, this is really an attempt—not only to prepare in case the Goldman Sachs prediction happens—but more so to make sure the prediction happens, and, if possible, to hasten its materialization by focusing attention to the need for a deliberate and systematic identification of opportunities, setting of goals, and charting the course that will secure these goals.
This activity is focusing on mayors and business leaders because more will be accomplished were these two to work hand-in-hand than were the two to work independently, for, indeed, it is the private sector who’ll take care of the investment and management, and the government sector of the infrastructure and incentives, a powerful combination if done properly. No less than President Aquino appreciates this, that’s probably why he is batting for closer collaboration between the private sector and the government.
This is the reason why Dr Bernardo M. Villegas will have with him Dr. Rolando Dy, Executive Director of the Center for Food and Agribusiness of the University of Asia and the Pacific, one of the country’s foremost experts on agri-business to give inputs and to answer questions pertaining to agri-business, one area which promises to be a driving force behind any economic surge, and which
Mindanao holds so much promise of.
This conference is being initiated by A Brown Co Inc as part of its corporate social responsibility. A Brown is the developer of Xavier Estates, Teakwood Hills in Cagayan de Oro, Valencia Estates in Valencia City, Bukidnon, and West Highlands in Butuan City.
A Brown acknowledges the key support of the DILG Region 10 Regional Director Loreto Bhagwani and the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation in making this conference possible.

BULLDOG October 23rd, 2010, 02:05 PM Re-electionist Barangay Kagawad shot dead in Agusan del Norte GMANews.TV - Saturday, October 23Send IM Story Print
BUTUAN CITY - A re-electionist Barangay Kagawad was shot dead by still unidentified armed men and women inside his house around 9:40 p.m. on Thursday evening.
Report from Caraga Police Regional Information Office identified the victim as Barangay Kagawad Rommel Magdayo Moldez, 31. Moldez was seeking re-election as Barangay Kagawad of Barangay San Isidro, Santiago, Agusan del Norte, where gold-rich Mount Sarog is located.
An initial investigation revealed that several as-yet unidentified men and women had entered the victim's house, looking for him. When Moldez arrived, accompanied by a certain Romnick Tupos, he and his companion were ordered to drop to the ground. Moldez was then shot twice in the back.
The suspects then allegedly left the premises to look for another person, identified as Barangay Kagawad Angelito Garong.
After the shooting, the victim was immediately rushed to Cabadbaran Emergency District Hospital some ten kilometers away from Barangay San Isidro, but was pronounced dead on arrival by attending physicians.
The immediate family and relatives of the victim told police probers that the killing may have been motivated by Moldez's direct involvement in peace and order initiatives in the mining area at Mount Sarug. They claimed that he had already previously received death threats.
Moldez's murder follows in the wake of allegations from concerned civilians that small-scale miners in the area have been acquiring illegal stockpiles of firearms and ammunition from police. The miners are also allegedly under the protection of local politicians, some of whom reportedly own some of the mining tunnels at Mount Sarug.
The alleged stockpiling came to light after a series of still unsolved robberies and killings that are apparently tied up with gold mining interests in the area.
The Santiago Municipal Police said that they are investigating the shooting to determine if it was politically motivated, as the victim was seeking re-election in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections this coming Monday.
Earlier, Caraga Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Reynaldo S. Rafal identified 204 Barangays in Agusan del Norte as sensitive areas in need of monitoring. - TJD, GMANews.TV

5.1 magnitude quake hits parts of Mindanao

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte, Philippines--A magnitude 5.1 quake hit anew parts of southern Philippines early on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake shook parts of Mindanao which was rattled by a tremor of almost similar strength exactly a day earlier but the temblor over the weekend was much stronger, residents reported.
Sunday’s quake, which struck at 2:37 a.m., was traced some 55 kilometers southeast of Surigao City with a depth of 10 kilometers, the USGS said.
Residents in the nearby city of Butuan reported being jolted from sleep by the quake, but local authorities did not report any damage or injuries.
“The quake was sudden and so strong that I was roused from sleep,” Jenirose Torotoro, a Butuan City resident said, adding Sunday’s tremor was slightly stronger but quicker than Saturday’s.
Saturday’s magnitude-5.0 temblor had a depth of 141.9 kilometers and was traced some 85 kilometers from Hinatuan town, in Surigao del Sur, according to the USGS.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Butuan City was shaken by a magnitude-3.9 aftershock at around 5:20 a.m. on Saturday.
The Philippines sits in the Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates collide resulting in frequent volcanic and seismic activities.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the tremor was recorded at 2:38 a.m. The temblor was traced some 15 kilometers northeast of Jabonga town in Agusan del Norte, Phivolcs said.
The quake which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 125.66 kilometers, and was also felt in other parts of the Caraga Region. Phivolcs also reported that a magnitude 3.9 quake also hit this city at 5:20 a.m. Saturday. The early morning tremor was traced seven kilometers north of this city with 125.50 kilometers depth.
Meanwhile, Caraga Region residents also went into panic when a magnitude 5.0 quake hit Surigao del Sur also on Saturday.

regjeex October 25th, 2010, 06:52 AM TV5 to spend P10B to become No. 1

MediaQuest Holdings Inc., the Media holding company owned by the PLDT retirement fund of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., has allocated P10 billion in for the continuing expansion of TV5, to make its television unit the number one broadcasting network in the country.
Being in a hurry to build the infrastructure TV5 needs to make its dream come true, MediaQuest has allocated most of this budget, or about P7 billion, until 2011. The remaining portion of the budget will be spent until 2014.
“To build out the entire facility we will spend around P9 to P10 billion,” MediaQuest president Ray Espinosa said last week.
The investment, he said, will be spent for broadcast transmission, network and operations, inclusive of new studios and offices.
MediaQuest has earlier projected TV5’s revenue to hit P1-billion by the end of the year but is not expecting the station to become immediately profitable. Espinosa said such may happen in the coming years because “we are in a start-up move” adding that it is still in the process of building up its facilities including the acquisition of vehicles for improved mobility of its talents.”
Based on a five-year plan, we are working toward becoming profitable sometime in our fifth year,” Espinosa said.
Espinosa has expressed optimism on achieving profitability, which he said is anchored on the increase in advertising revenues of TV5’s programs such as Talentadong Pinoy, Midnight DJ, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Face to Face.
“Advertising revenues will more than double this year compared to last year,” he said, adding that the ratings of TV5’s hit shows are doing very well that many continue to place advertisements during the time slots when these are shown.
TV5 will start the construction of its new headquarters, which will house six studios, in Mandaluyong City in November this year but will retain its three studios in Novaliches.
The TV station, which MediaQuest acquired from businessman Antonio Cojuangco, will also strengthen its reach nationwide and plans to put up a station abroad. “Definitely any network would have to do that. TV5 Global will be our foreign station. We have more than enough local programs to put up a good network for overseas,” said Espinosa.
TV5 will also put up a UHF channel and a radio station in the FM bandwidth. “The timetable for the overseas station, UHF channel and radio station are all Asap. Everything is being done simultaneously but the interest is to do it quickly because we know that this will provide revenues,” said the official.
Espinosa admitted that TV5 has a lot of catching up to do to beat Channel 2 of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. and Channel 7 of GMA Network. “We have to aspire to be number one. We will put our resources to achieve that goal.”
Earlier, MediaScape Inc., another unit of MediaQuest, has sought the approval of its application by the National Telecommunications Commission to put up 50 broadcasting systems nationwide. If approved, the facilities could be utilized by TV5.
Among the areas where MediaScape plans to put up TV stations are Butuan, Zambales, Coron, Ormoc, Bohol, Tacloban and Albay.

jsl_bxu1206 October 25th, 2010, 10:19 AM Candidates gathering and detaining voters may be charged for kidnapping
By Robert E. Roperos
Butuan City (25 October) -- Caraga Comelec Regional Director Atty. Francisco Pone today said candidates gathering and detaining voters may be filed with kidnapping, following the report that a candidate in the SK Chairmanship position gathered and detained around 40 registered youth-voters in one of the beach resorts in Carmen, Agusan del Norte, to ensure his victory in today's election.
The official said, what the said candidate is doing is a clear violation of the Omnibus Election Code and may be filed kidnapping for detaining persons.
Also, Pobe reminded those drivers whose vehicles were used to transport the voters to be cautious because they may also be filed with kidnapping case for being an accessory to the crime. (PIA-Caraga)

jsl_bxu1206 October 25th, 2010, 10:20 AM PNP Agusan Norte conducts probe on alleged voters' detention
By Robert E. Roperos
Butuan City (25 October) -- Following the report involving a candidate in the SK chairmanship position allegedly gathered youth-voters and detained them in a beach resort in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte, PNP Agusan del Norte Provincial Director PSSupt Nestor M. Fajura said they have immediately conducted investigation regarding the matter.
In a phone-patch interview this morning, the official said, upon receiving the report, they immediately conducted investigation yesterday and found out that "it's positive that there were youths in the said resort," he said. However, when the team asked them (youths), they said the group is just conducting recreational activities and that they were not forced by anybody to join the group.
However, Fajura enjoined the parents that if their children were detained by force, they may file appropriate complaints before the local authorities and the COMELEC, in general.
Meanwhile, Fajura said the voters' turnout in Agusan del Norte as of press time is from moderate to heavy and the whole province turned out to be generally peaceful. (PIA-Caraga)

regjeex October 30th, 2010, 09:32 AM Three hundred pregnant women benefit from Buntis Congress in Butuan City
by Mary Christine Anthonette M. Salise
Butuan City (29 October) -- Three hundred would-be mothers from different barangays received health care services during the recently-held "Buntis Congress" sponsored by ABS-CBN DZMM Teleradyo, in cooperation with the City Government of Butuan, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Department of Health, National Nutrition Council and Midwives Association of the Philippines.
The event was aimed at promoting and developing the knowledge in healthcare and safety of would-be mothers. Informative discussions and seminars of newborn care and responsible parenthood with free natal check-up were given in the said event. The would-be participating mothers also received free baby kits and free lunch from DZMM.
The City Government of Butuan, through its City Health Office, provided the ambulance and other health care services for the pregnant mothers. Mayor Ferdinand Amante of Butuan City considered the event as a noteworthy endeavor as it provided the expectant mothers of Butuan City the basic knowledge in health care and safety for their babies aimed towards achieving responsible parenthood.
Buntis Congress was hosted by ABS-CBN morning show host Winnie Cordero. Would-be mothers were serenaded by former Pinoy Dream Academy finalist Ronnie Liang, who sang his OPM hit "Ngiti", placing sweet smiles in the 300 would-be mothers. (DILG-13/PIA-Caraga)

http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/285367/sugar-workers-center-rise
BUTUAN CITY – Leaders in the Caraga region, particularly Butuanons, mourned the death of former Butuan City Mayor Democrito Plaza ll, who served as chief executive of this region’s frontier and capital city for 15 years.
Fondly called by his constituents, “Mayor Boy Daku” passed away at 5:59 p.m. Friday in the intensive care unit of St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig, Metro Manila.
Plaza died after undergoing a successful kidney transplant last Oct. 26 in the hospital and was apparently on his way to recovery. Plaza's close family and doctors at St. Luke’s have yet to issue an official medical statement about the cause of his death. Plaza’s remains lie at Arlington Funeral Home in Magallanes, Makati City.
Announcement for the transfers of the remains of the late former mayor to Butuan City and burial has yet to be made by the family. (Mike U. Crismundo)
............
I am saddened by this news :ohno:
Our condolences to the Plaza family ^^

regjeex November 5th, 2010, 09:33 AM FSUU partners with Anak TV to promote responsible media
By Robert E. Roperos
Butuan City (4 November) -- Father Saturnino Urios University, the first home-grown university of this city has partnered with Anak TV, an advocacy organization promoting media literacy, particularly television literacy, and pushes the agenda for child-sensitive, family-friendly television in the country.
In response to the growing concern on responsible media use, a forum dubbed as "Symposium on Media Literacy" is set on November 13, 2010 at FSUU Morelos Campus Gymnasium, Ambangan, this city.
In a written statement, Ms. Ivy Flores, FSUU Office of the Development Center Director said that Anak TV has shared many studies revealing Filipino children growing up obese, pampered and too oriented towards foreign culture, tastes and habits.
Accordingly, these studies have acknowledged media, particularly television, as one of the culprits. "It is in television where our children model themselves and acquire tastes and habits not taught at home or in school," she said.
Further, Ms. Flores emphasized that it has been one of the observations of Anak TV and probably the public that more and more families today are dysfunctional "because this type is so popular on TV that audiences think it is the accepted standard," Flores said.
Flores added that our youth have likewise generally become aggressive and experimental even at tender ages even if they are not trained to be so at home.
With these developments, Flores stressed the activity is aimed to spread the gospel of responsible media use. "Believing that this activity is very much crucial to the formation or transformation of individuals and families, we see the significant role of the media in the dissemination of this advocacy," Flores said.
Moreover, the university is encouraging interested participants to bring colleagues and friends, particularly those parenting school children in basic education.
For queries, please call the FSUU Office of the Development Center at telephone number 342-1830, local 1912. (PIA-Caraga)

Caritas is currently occupying that vacated Oro Asian building which they've also renovated.
According to an employee, this is just temporary since Caritas will soon construct it's own building on that same lot.

8th nat'l youth parliament, binuksan na
Ni Robert E. Roperos
http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p101105.htm&no=D8&r=&y=&mo=
(PIA-Caraga) [top]

regjeex November 7th, 2010, 05:22 AM Agusan Norte student tops regional popquiz
by Angie Balen-Antonio
Butuan City (4 November) -- Agusan del Norte schools division, represented by Reymar A. Dimaano, outdone the other eight division winners in the recently concluded Regional Population Quiz held at the Butuan City People's Hall.
The graduating student of Carmen National High School who was awarded with a trophy and a cash prize, will represent Caraga in the national finals early of next year.
Other winners include Rennelbert P. Agopitac of Bislig City (1st runner-up) and Mark Lloyd G. Dapar of Agusan del Sur (2nd runner-up). Each received a trophy and cash prize too.
The contestants from Butuan City, Surigao del Sur, Surigao City, Siargao, Surigao del Norte & Province of Dinagat Islands got the consolation prize.
In a press conference, the contestants really expressed the relevance of the population quiz. It promotes the value of population and development education. It also enhanced their awareness on the present situation of the youth and the pressing issues affecting them.
"Empowerment is very important for us youth to be more responsible in all decisions affecting our sexuality. I for one, will never engage in pre-marital sex", said one of the contestants.
The organizers hoped that the project enhanced the understanding and appreciation of the students and general public on population and population-related issues. The content of questions were formulated based on the following concerns: Family Life and Responsible Parenthood, Gender and Development, Population and Reproductive Health and Population, Environment, Resources and Sustainable Development. regjeex November 7th, 2010, 05:24 AM DAR-Caraga booth wins "People's Choice" award
by Joie L. Ceballos
Butuan City (5 November) -- Showcasing the best products of the communities supported by the Northern Mindanao Communities Initiatives and Resource Management (NMCIREMP) ? a project funded by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the NMICEREMP Booth brought by DAR-Caraga won the People's Choice Award during the recently concluded IFAD Knowledge and Learning Market held at the SM Mega Trade Hall, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City last 11-13 October 2010.
"We placed in our booth all the necessary information and have them backed up with real stories from the beneficiaries", says DAR-Regional Information Officer Joie Ceballos.
The booth also offers free-taste and touch to the products. " We want to make them feel and taste our products. This is our way of sharing our culture and our stories", says DAR Regional Investment and Marketing Officer Jehan Ozoa.
"Sold Out"
Best-seller products run out of supply during the 2-day fair. Among them is the Farmers Pride Vinegar of the Cabugao First Farmers Consumers Coop in Bacuag, Surigao Norte, which was awarded Best Product in the 9th Agraryo Trade Fair last June.
Also proving its worth in the market is the TsokoBest Tableya, made from pure cacao seeds from Bayugan, Agusan del Sur.
While the fashion accessories made of Agsam vine, of ARB Norma de Lara from Lanuza, Surigao Sur has always been the buyer's favorite.
Other products that became a favorite are the cassava chips of the banal na Kaharian ng Diyos na Buhay of Sta. Fe, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, assisted by DAR-IFAD-NMCIREMP. The chips now come in two flavors--- cheesy and sweetened.
DAR hopes that with the activity, the office will be able to tie up with investors and buyers for the ARB manufacturers. (DAR-13/PIA-Caraga)
regjeex November 7th, 2010, 05:25 AM Caraga RDC sympathizes with Plaza family on passing of former Butuan City mayor
Butuan City (5 November) -- The members of the Caraga Regional Development Council (RDC) and the NEDA Caraga Secretariat offer their deepest sympathy to the Plaza Family on the untimely demise of former RDC Chairperson (CY 2004-2007) and Mayor of Butuan City (1992-2003 & 2007-2010), Democrito "Boy Daku" D. Plaza II.
The late Honorable Plaza had done so much as the RDC Chairperson for CY 2004-2007. He actively responded to the multi-sectoral concerns of the Region which were aimed to boost economic growth in the region, to improve infrastructure support facilities and to enhance the delivery of basic social services.
He specifically resolved the accessibility issues along the main crossing across Agusan River through fast approval, strong influence and full support to the Second Magsaysay Bridge and Butuan City Bypass Road Project Phase II. The said project currently provides convenience to travelers from cities and provinces of Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Surigao as it widely connects the Agusan-Surigao Davao Road and the Butuan City-Iligan-Cagayan de Oro Highway. Around 50 percent of the RDC resolutions passed during his term were in line with projects for funding to enhance the socio-economic prospects of the region.
Being a pro-active leader, the former RDC Chair was selected as the alternate head/representative of the NEDA Board-Regional Development Committee for Mindanao (RDCOM-Mindanao) composed of the RDC officials of Regions 9, X, XI, XII, Caraga and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). He supported the updating of the Mindanao Investment Program (MIP) among other development undertakings for Mindanao.
The late Honorable Plaza also devoted his time to programs responsive to the commitment of the government in the international community, e.g. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). While Butuan City during his leadership was chosen as one of the 14 cities in the Philippines to lead the localization of the MDGs, the Region, with him as the RDC Chair, also successfully supported the first MDG Progress Report CY 1990-2005 which specifically spelled-out priorities for actions of the region to attain the targets of the MDGs.
The late Honorable Plaza had always been a strong and influential leader in the Region, grounded in his dedication to public service. His legacy to accelerate the socio-economic development of the Caraga Region will always be remembered with deep gratefulness by the RDC members and its secretariat.
God bless his soul. (RDC/NEDA-13/PIA-Caraga)

Makaingon ko hinuon nga reliable sources ang akong nakuha. By the way, mga tag iya ni sila'g mga machineries and trucking... Ang isa, nag sign nga contract to provide machineries para sa construction and trucking. Ang nasa contrata (nga medyo nabasa nako gamay, hehe), mag start sila gamit sa machineries karong December.

regjeex November 8th, 2010, 07:25 AM good....

At last, BENCH finally decided to tansfer @ the first floor of this building.
Much better, with bolder signage, mas napapansin
For the longest time, Bench occupied a space @ the second floor, with
the cutest & fading signage, you wouldn't even notice it. Akala tuloy walang BENCH ang
butuan

dugay na kaayo ang Bench Corner sa 2nd Floor sa Andrei Boutique. Ms Bunny is right. Gamay ra kaayo ang signage sa una tapos daan na jud kaayo. It is only this year that they transferred to the ground floor.
