wala na pag-asa ang gmall jundem. murag status quo ra na sila. pareha sa CDO nga gaisano og kanang sa colon and countrymall sa cebu. they're under the Neopace Inc. Group.

nindot man gud ang ubang gaisano groups kay ga-renovate from time to time like:
1.Gaisano Grand Group
2.Gaisano Capital
3.DSG Group
4.Metro Gaisano

Mao jud bai.. Anyway, few years ago, Gaisano is one of the best malls in the Visayas an Mindanao.. [except sa mga Metro. Di man sad siya mall] But now, Gaisano is considered one of the malls for the yayas and houseboys. They really depreciate a lot! Bati kaayo ang Gaisano na karon. That's sad to hear. I've never really seen Gaisano at its best. I was disappointed after visiting two of their stores in different cities when I was 11 years old, and that was in 2002 lang. First, we visited the poorly maintained Gaisano Mall (the biggest one) in Cagayan de Oro, then a couple of days later, we dropped by another poorly kept Gaisano store in Ozamiz (but left immediately, sa entrance pa lang, kasi the sight wasn't appealing) - we were on a land trip kasi from CDO to ZC that time. I dunno what happened to those stores now, if they've improved or what, I haven't visited CDO and Ozamiz kasi since that year. During its first few years in the business, could you say ba na Gaisano was almost at par with SM?

nope. Gaisano was never at par with SM. not even close. but there are stores which are nice like these ones:

Gaisano Ormoc Riverside Mall

During its first few years in the business, could you say ba na Gaisano was almost at par with SM?

this is what I see in my dreams for Butuan....an economically empowered middle class with the young and emerging professionals as the driving force....the age group of moi....jsl....atebunny.... regjeex....james and ian and the rest who are young and forward looking in the spirit of entrepreneurship...instead of waiting til kingdom come for the government to bring them jobs....THEY create job themselves by building small to medium enterprises like this travel agency ^^

Thanks for the info... This is not a solid source for me. Anyway, let's wait for 2,3,4, or 5 months... Tingnan natin...

Anyway, what i am sure of is that SM is not going to build a mall here in butuan.. But instead, they are going to build a hypermart. That is if they are still going to use their 2006 [or was it 2007 or 08?] report.

they will no longer be using their 2006 report James. Remember, that there was another SM prime team who was in audience with the late mayor in 2007. One of their purpose was to gather updated socio-economic profile of the city. This was followed after by their attempts to scour the different parts city with sizable properties of approx 6 to 10 hectares...which triggered a rumor boom of an SM City rising in a barangay here and there :)

taking cue of its 6 to 10 hectare requirement...plus a big 10 hectare Robinson's development competition in the offing, I don't think a hypermarket development would bode well to an SM agressive competitive corporate move

When you're in Butuan, the place usually people go to is the GMall, where else?

There are coffeeshops too, that is if you just simply want to sit & talk & let your time pass. The most accessible is Margies & Cofi Talk since it's located along the highway, other Coffeeshops are quite difficult to locate esp.if you're not from here kay tua ra ba sa mga souk2

or you can also go to Almont Inland Resort for a swim or just hang out at their Mini bar for a game of pool & a doze of light alcohol if you're in a drinking mood :D

or if you're up to it, you might want to check out the Regional Museum & the Balanghai Shrine?

Tourist police formed to secure influx of Chinese students in S. Philippine city

10:30, December 30, 2010

http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90001/90776/90882/7246683.html

Due to the anticipated influx of Chinese students next year, civilian and police authorities of a southern Philippine city have agreed to the formation of a special police unit to provide the foreigners ample security while in the country, officials said on Thursday.

An expected 5, 000 Chinese will be coming to Butuan city in Mindanao island's Caraga region by next year to study English proficiency who needed an ample security, according to city councilor Ryan Anthony Culima.
Culima told local radio the city government recently signed a memorandum of agreement with the Chinese Embassy regarding the educational exchange, and that the local government likewise pledged for providing security to the students.

The local police on Thursday confirmed to Xinhua the planned security arrangement, and according to Chief Superintendent Reynaldo Rafal, Caraga region police chief, a special tourist police would be mobilized to protect the Chinese students in their stay in Butuan and nearby areas.

"The tourist police forms as a specially-trained unit of the existing (Butuan) police station. The new police force would provide security not only to the Chinese students but also to all other tourists who will be visiting the region," Rafal told Xinhua by phone, adding police forces in areas known as tourist destinations like the surfing island-town of Siargao would be automatically converted into tourist police units.

Rafal said they are now on the stage of planning about the number of personnel that will compose the tourist police units and that these would be mobilized by the end of next month. "We want local and foreign tourists here to feel safe," Rafal said.

The resource-rich southern Philippines is home to some of the country's scenic wonders but attacks by kidnap and extortion gangs and a stubborn leftist and Islamic insurgencies have affected domestic and foreign tourism arrivals in the region in the recent years, with tourists opting to safer destinations in the central and northern parts of the country.

The Philippines' tourism industry had also suffered a black eye following the hostage-taking incident in the capital Manila by a disgruntled former policeman on Aug. 23 that left eight Hong Kong tourists dead.

1,500 Butuan city hall workers jobless by Jan 1
12/29/2010 | 10:19 AM

BUTUAN CITY — A total of 1,500 city hall workers, particularly those working on job-order basis, will be out of work starting January 1, according to a local government memorandum issued late last week.

On December 23, the Butuan City government issued a memorandum stating that all city hall job-order contracts will end by January 31, 2011.

Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr.’s memorandum said there is no need for workers hired through job orders to report to work on the first day of 2011, unless they are re-hired.

“Actually Mayor Amante merely extended their work up to December 31 this year for humanitarian reasons. Majority [of affected workers], who were hired by the previous administration, have expired contracts. Some have ended their job orders last October this year while some as early as September," Butuan City Vice Mayor Lawrence Fortun told GMANEWS.TV.

Fortun admitted that some affected workers viewed the move as politically motivated because those who will be terminated were hired by the previous administration.

The vice mayor also cited cost-cutting measures, such as streamlining of manpower requirements at the City Hall, as among the reasons for the issuance of the memorandum.

Should the city hall need to rehire terminated workers, performance evaluation and availability of funds would be of utmost consideration, Fortun added.

“Frankly, as part of our streamlining, we only intend to re-hire 700 job orders that are very much needed and relevant to our daily operations," he said.

Meanwhile, opposition groups, including the 1,500 worker, slammed the move as “political vendetta."

They said the cost-cutting measure being the reason for the termination of workers is unacceptable. “Why would they hire people to work for Butuan City Hall from Agusan del Norte province, a known bailiwick of the Amantes? Clearly, the Amante and Fortun move was political", opposition leaders told GMANews.TV.

Also, they claimed that the current Butuan City Council membership, together with a number of barangay captains, is dominated by the Amante group, they added. — Ben Serrano/LBG, GMANews.TV

DSWD Caraga holds confab
December 30, 2010, 3:47pm

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Caraga regions (Northeastern Mindanao) held a yearend conference at a downtown inland resort and convention center here.

The conference was attended by DSWD Caragaregional staff, provincial, city and municipal social welfare officers, and members of the academe. The more than 100 participants came from the provinces of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur and the cities of Bislig, Surigao and Butuan.

DSWD Caraga Region Xlll Regional Director Mercedita P. Jabagat said the forum facilitated discussion on policy issues, research studies, social welfare legislation, technical sharing, issues and trends on national development plan and international commitments and orientation on national projects of DSWD.

Discussed during this year’s forum were the salient features of Republic Act 10121 or an Act Strengthening the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management System, the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act 9994 or An Act Granting additional Benefits and Privileges to Senior Citizens, project updates, inputs on personality development, discussion on AIDS 101 and facts about stroke and ways to prevent it. DSWD outlines framework for better social services
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
December 30, 2010, 3:48pm

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is employing what it calls “a convergence framework” for a more efficient delivery of social services.

Region Xlll DSWD Regional Director Mercedita P. Jabagat explained the convergence framework during the social welfare and development (SWD) forum held at a downtown inland resort hotel and convention center here.

She said that Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman has been doing a nationwide roadshow to promote the department’s convergence framework.

This convergence framework aims to maximize the impact of DSWD’s poverty reduction programs through an effective targeting system and a holistic community development approach.

It also aims to empower poor families in marginalized communities by focusing on health and education needs, basic physical infrastructure and livelihood.

“This framework is also known as the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Pathway out of Poverty. It consists of the three key programs of the DSWD which are: Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or 4P’s, Kapit-Bisig Laban saKahirapan – Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS), and Self-Employment Assistance – Kaunlaran (SEA-K),” said Jabagat.

Jabagat said this three-pronged poverty reduction approach addresses the poor families of the right to development, education, and health.

The first component aims to secure the chronic poor through protective social services.

The DSWD extends social welfare services to the most vulnerable sectors of the poor. It also provides assistance for education and health services through the conditional cash transfer (CCT) program, also known as 4Ps.

To complement the CCT, microfinance institutions enhance the capacities of the beneficiaries by means of financial literacy programs and increase their security levels through micro insurance and savings facilities.

Private sector partners deliver these programs to the beneficiaries through Mutual Benefit Associations (MBA’s).

The second component seeks to improve the financial access of the transitional poor through direct support to communities for local development.

The key program that responds to the needs of the transitional poor is the community driven development (CDD), also known as KALAHICIDSS.

Butuan mayor pays tribute to national hero
By Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 31 (PIA) -- In celebration of the 114th martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante pays tribute to the life’s works of the country’s national hero during the city’s commemoration on Thursday, December 30 at Rizal Park here.

Attended by employees of the local and regional government agencies based in Butuan City, the city’s chief executive reminded the public of the patriotism of Dr. Rizal which “kindles the consciousness of the Filipinos to defend for their rights and fight for freedom, believing that there is a bright future ahead.”

Mayor Amante also said that the celebration of Rizal’s martyrdom reminds the Filipino’s bravery and patriotism to their Motherland putting into their consciousness the nobility of his selflessness and putting first the interest of many lives over his own.

Further, the official said the sacrifice made by the Philippines’ national hero is for the Fiilipinos, to inspire and enable then to do more for the people and should not just be remembered but must be emulated.

Furthermore, Amante said all Filipinos should be proud for having Dr. Jose Rizal a part of the nation’s history. He even enjoined the youths to forever remember the good deeds and aspirations of the country’s national hero.

“Our National Hero is one of a kind, where many nations adore him and in fact, in some countries, statues of him were constructed to honor him, yet, many youths now slowly forget this noble man who offered himself for us… If others are proud of him, all the more for us! We can all be proud of this Great Malayan Race who fights for liberty through the power of pen and his ultimate sacrifice”, Amante said.

This year’s commemoration in Butuan City was spearheaded by the Department of Education (DepEd) Butuan City Division through the able leadership of Ms. Marilou H. Dedumo. (PIA-Caraga)

Butuan City Fire Station to post three fire trucks in the city

http://piacaraga.blogspot.com/

BUTUAN CITY (31 December) – Butuan City Fire Marshall Patricio Vasquez of Butuan City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) today said they will be posting three fire trucks in three different areas in the city particularly in Brgy. Libertad, Langihan Road, and in South Montilla Boulevard as part of their preventive measure during the new year’s eve celebration tonight where Butuanons are expected to welcome year 2011 with street parties, discos, and the like.

However, Vasquez hoped that the people here must be cautious to avoid any untoward incidents especially fire-related. According to Vasquez, the people especially the children should also think of precautionary measures as they will be using firecrackers and any other pyrotechnic materials as a tradition of welcoming the New Year.

It can be recalled that during the previous years, fire blazed houses and properties in downtown Butuan hours before 12:00 midnight of December 31, leaving number of families homeless and some business establishments turned into ashes. (PIA-Caraga)

Butuan chief exec steps up measures for dev’t in 2011

By: Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY (31 December) – City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante Jr. on Thursday (December 30) presented measures and vowed to develop economic situation in the city in the coming year.

In his speech delivered by Vice Mayor Atty. Lawrence Lemuel H. Fortun during the 114th celebration of the martyrdom of the country’s national hero – Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the city’s chief executive emphasized that his administration will still focus on changing the city for the better, thus improving the economic condition of its constituents.

“Our culture may slowly change through the advancement of science and technology as well as the influence of media, but I believe it is in our blood as Filipinos to stay united and focused towards our goals for change to better Butuan and for the better Philippines,” Mayor Amante said.

Also, Amante enjoined the public to make a stand and be active in performing the duties and responsibilities for the country. “May we all be inspired to take our stand and be active in taking our duties and responsibilities for our country in nation building by inspiring and believing one another,” Amante said. Butuan set to plant 1 M trees
Joins gov't effort to alleviate effects of global warming
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
January 1, 2011, 4:23pm

BUTUAN CITY – Evidently concerned with the effects of global warming and climate change, the city government in Butuan City joined the national government in its mitigation program by allocating funds in an effort to plant one million trees in various areas of the city.

As this developed, the city government has started looking for wide areas for massive tree-planting, not only at the Mount Mayapay area but also in other watershed areas around this city.

“We (city government) are very much concerned about by the global warming and climate change, that’s why we are allocating funds for this tree-planting project,” said City Councilor Ryan Anthony Culima.

“We urged the public especially the Butuanons to join and support this program,” added Culima.

The city lawmaker emphasized the importance of planting trees as the city government headed by Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante Jr. is geared towards planting more trees every year.

“I would like to enjoin the public especially the Butuanons to take part in the project of the city government to mitigate the impact brought about by climate change where creatures in this planet are starting to feel and experience,” stressed Culima.

With this global problem, Culima said that each one of us must do our share not only for our present generation
but more importantly for the future generation.

“Everybody has a vital role to play,” added the city councilor.

On late Thursday afternoon, the City Council here approved the proposed P1.2-billion budget for the year 2011.

The proposed budget was unanimously approved by the members of the Sangguniang Panglungsod (SP) before they took their recess in preparation for the New Year’s celebration.

Acting Mayor and concurrent Vice Mayor Lawrence L. Fortun spearheaded the approval of the 2011 proposed budget, fully supported by Acting Vice Mayor and concurrent Councilor Erwin Dano, and members of the City Council.

“The increase in the proposed budget is to support vital government programs in an effort to address the very needs of the people, especially on livelihood, environment and peace and order programs of the city chief executive,” Culima said.

It was learned that other priority projects under the 2011 budget include infrastructure, health and education, support, and creation of this city’s Special and Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, and tourist police force, and investment promotion.

According to Culima, Amante is expected to sign the 2011 budget anytime next week.

5,000 foreign students take English proficiency study
January 1, 2011, 4:15pm

BUTUAN CITY (PNA) – Some 5,000 Chinese students, mostly high school students from mainland China, will soon arrive here for a one-year English proficiency study, the city government said.

City Councilor Ryan Anthony Culima said the arrival of the 5,000 Chinese students to this city was made possible through local private group, I-Study International.

Culima, chairman of Peace and Order, Security and Police Matters of the City Council, said the St. Joseph
Institute of Technology (SJIT) here had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with I-Study International for the one-year English Proficiency study of the Chinese students.

Culima is also a member of the Butuan City Council Committee on Education, Culture and Sports.

“Two other schools, the locally based Fr. Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) and state-owned Caraga State University (CSU), will follow with an agreement signing with the Chinese students and I-Study International for the accommodation of the rest of the 5,000 Chinese students who will be arriving first quarter of 2011,” Culima said.

Under the agreement, the foreign students will pay their tuition fees and other school fees in advance for one year and jointly develop curriculum for English proficiency that best fit the Chinese students which will be submitted to the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) for innovations, corrections, and approval.

Culima said that since the number of Chinese students is quite large, the city government offered a place for the Chinese students where there is easy access to stores, clinics or hospitals, sports, recreation, and study facilities.

“We already offered the 36-hectare Butuan City government property in Barangay Tiniwisan where there are already huge buildings that (will) be converted temporarily as dormitories and the large areas to be established as sports and recreation facilities. This will be rented by them for one year – an extra income for the city government. The Chinese students are now studying our proposal as they already agreed by principle,” Culima said.

Vice Mayor Lawrence Fortun confirmed that the city government, through Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante Jr., consulted Caraga police regional director Chief Supt. Reynaldo S. Rafal for the provision of security and other matters for the 5,000 Chinese students.

Construction may not be going fast enough, but at least continuous. Last time i passed there, the main entrance of this building located farther right (not seen in the pix) is now taking shape. It maybe too early to tell, BUT the first thing I noticed is the main entrance's shape that look quite different sa Rendering.

Massive flooding hits Caraga region
By Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Jan. 3 (PIA) -- It's been three days now when the world welcomed year 2011 and while other regions in the country are still celebrating the coming of the “year of the rabbit,” some areas in the Visayas and Mindanao regions are experiencing massive floodings and even landslides, and Caraga Region is not exempted from these calamities.

As of press time, in Caraga Region, all the four provinces are already experiencing massive floodings while some portions of the said areas are also experiencing minor landslides.

These disasters were confirmed today by officials of the respective Provincial Disaster Coordinating Councils (PDCCs) in a phone-patch interview with a local radio station here.

According to Ms. Rosario Roxas, officer of PDCC-Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte there are already areas in the province that were affected with minor landslides. Some roads are also impassable because of flashfloods.

However, Ms. Roxas said, the local government unit has been constantly coordinating with the Department of Public Works and Highways to clear roads and areas affected by minor landslides.

In Surigao del Norte, as heavy rains continue to pour, a total of 47 families or 203 individuals in the Barangays of Rizal, San Juan and Washington were evacuated since yesterday.

Information gathered from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) as well as the Quick Action Response Team (QART) revealed that 12 families or 59 individuals were coming from Brgy. San Juan specifically in the area of Navalca and 19 families or 84 persons were from Brgy. Washington. They are currently sheltered at Kaskag gym.

Also, around 16 families or 60 individuals mostly from Sitio Lamintaw of Brgy. Rizal were evacuated at the barangay’s multi-purpose gym. As of press time, only one person was reportedly missing identified as Roberto Dalangin, 35 years old from Sitio Togonan, Brgy. Mabini. Dalangin was reportedly missing since yesterday morning at Togonan river.

Meanwhile, Agusan del Sur provincial capitol building can no longer be accessed by light vehicles due to high rise of flood water surrounding its vicinity.

As per information from PIA-Agusan del Sur Information Center, only dump trucks can go to the capitol buildings to gather rescue equipment and supplies. Portion of the front concrete fence along the national highway collapsed.

With these developments, no official transactions are going on at all LGU offices as all are concerned with the search and rescue operations, including the local government officials.

According to PSWD chief Josefina Bajade, this is the worst scenario for the past 10 years. As of reporting time, no official report on damages yet reached PDCC office because all municipalities are on search and rescue operations as the rain continues to fall heavily. Many portions of the national highways are now impassable and only roofs of schools in Bunawan town are visible being submerged underwater.

In Surigao del Sur, Provincial Disaster and Coordinating Council (PDCC) Officer of Surigao del Sur Mr. Florencio Pimentel, Jr. today confirmed that the municipalities of San Miguel and Tago are already engulfed with water.

Pimentel also said flashflood occurred in San Miguel town. He also reported that there are already barangays whose roads are not passable anymore as of press time.

In related development, the 175 feet tall tower of dxJS Radyo ng Bayan Tandag was reportedly tumbled at around 3 am of January 2.

In Butuan City, Mr. Tata Flores of the City disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC) today said Agusan River water level is still manageable. However, all authorities and concerned agencies and individuals are on red alert status since it is expected that flood waters from Davao City will flow to Agusan River that may cause massive flooding in the city.

It can be recalled that whenever Agusan River started to overflow, the city is already in danger of flood.

However, he said speed boat and ambulance are on standby at the river base for possible search and rescue operations while the city streets are now engulfed with water causing vehicle engines to shut off. (PIA-Caraga with reports from PIA Provincial Information Centers)

DepEd: School heads to determine if classes will be suspended or not
By Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Jan. 3 (PIA) -- Department of Education (DepEd) Butuan City Schools Division Superintendent Marilou Dedumo today said everytime there is flood, school administrators are given the authority to decide if classes in their respective AORs will be suspended or not.

As of press time, Dedumo said Lemon Elementary School and Gabriel Elementary School are among those already submerged in flood waters.

Meanwhile, in Agusan del Norte, Asst. Schools Division Superintendent Mr. Cornetes reported that some schools in Agusan del Norte are already submerged with flood waters but the division office has no advisory of classes’ suspension.

However, he said school heads are advised to report to their respective district supervisors.

Based on assessment, Supt. Cornetes said flooding is still manageable in all Agusan del Norte public schools.

Also, national highway along Cuyago and Tagmamarkay in Agusan del Norte are now barely passable to light vehicles while rivers in these areas are nearly to overflow. (PIA-Caraga)

Butuan CDCC assures Agusan River water level still “manageable”
By Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Jan. 3 (PIA) -- Mr. Tata Flores of the City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC) here said Agusan River water level is already measured at 110 meters but is still manageable, following the massive rain that hit Visayas and Mindanao regions since Saturday, January 1.

However, all authorities and concerned agencies and individuals are on red alert status since it is expected that flood waters from Davao City will flow to Agusan River that may cause massive flooding in the city.

Flores also said CDCC have not received reports yet as to the status of the 86 barangays in the city. Meanwhile, he said, speedboat and ambulance are on standby at the River base for possible search and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, some city streets here are already not passable to light vehicles as street canals are starting to overflow. The famous Langihan lagoon located near the Butuan City Integrated Bus and Jeepney Terminal is also overflowing as of this morning.

Agricultural rice fields within the city were also submerged with flood waters while some elementary and high schools here have declared suspension of classes. It was learned that school administrators were given authority to decide whether or not classes in their respective areas of responsibilities will be suspended or not. (PIA-Caraga)

Construction of the 12-M PNP Hospital to start soon

http://piacaraga.blogspot.com/2010/12/pia-news-service-thursday-dec-23-2010.html

The plan is underway for the earlier construction of the 12-million Philippine National Police Hospital in the region, to be funded by the Department of Health (DOH).

This was announced by DOH Caraga Regional Director Leonita P. Gorgolon, during a press conference held at the DOH-Center for Health Development conference room, Tuesday morning.

Director Gorgolon said during the forum that she’d just been to the PNP regional headquarters at Camp Rafael C. Rodriguez, Libertad, this city to relay the formal information that the hospital will soon be constructed by January, 2011. The ground-breaking according to her is set on January 10, next year.

“Caraga will be the first region (in the country) to construct a Philippine National Police Hospital,” she said. The other regions according to the official were still on the process of bidding. In Caraga, she said, all the concerned had already been issued the notice to proceed.
She also mentioned that part of her visit to the PNP regional headquarters, Tuesday morning is to see the site together with top regional PNP officials. According to her that during their site-inspection conducted, it was found out that there were still houses and other structures existing at the soon-to-be hospital construction site. The occupants, she said were given enough time to transfer and to vacate the place.

The building will cost 12-million pesos according to Dir. Gorgolon with one million worth of equipment. The hospital is expected to be functional before the year ends next year. (Noel B. Najarro, The Butuan Star/PIA-Caraga)
