Cable-stayed bridge perhaps?

Butuan's Second Bridge will find itself without a pair here in Mindanao as the newest revision of Panguil Bay Bridge will no longer be using cable stayed type or the suspension type.....Hopefully Samal Bridge once approved will be either cable stayed or suspension types of designs..

Sounds interesting about Samal Bridge to connect Davao City. If this will be materialized pretty soon, I would say, Mindanao can dominate the tourist attaction of the entire nation. Biruin mo sa sobrang haba ng bridge na kung maumpisan or kung matapos na yan, it looks nice cguro lalo na cguro pag cable stayed yan tas may kunting hawig don sa san juanico bridge ung mejo mag cucurve ng kunti.... Damn! Can't wait to see that...

BUTUAN

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1283/4427634/9363572/132079450.jpg

The City of Butuan is the regional center area of the Caraga Region and one of the growth areas in Mindanao in the Philippines. It is located at the northeastern part of Agusan Valley in northern Mindanao, sprawling across the Agusan River. It is bounded to the north, west and south by Agusan del Norte, to the east by Agusan del Sur and to the northwest by Butuan Bay.

As early as the 10th century, people from Butuan had already established trading relations with the Kingdom of Champa (now southern Vietnam) and Srivijaya empire of Java.

By the 11th century, Butuan was the center of trade and commerce in the Philippines. The evidence to prove this fact is the discovery of 9 balangays (the Butuan Boat) and other archeological find in the vicinities of Butuan City, particularly in Ambangan, Libertad near the old El Rio de Butuan and Masao River.

Much controversy and debate have been generated with regard to the holding of the first mass. Whether it was held in Limasawa, Leyte or in Masao, Butuan City. It is sure, however, that Ferdinand Magellan did drop anchor by the mouth of Agusan River in 1521 and held mass to commemorate the event.

The first municipal election in Butuan took place on March 1902 in accordance with Public Law No. 82 which coincided with the American occupation of the place.

During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in World War II, Butuan was razed to the ground when the guerilla forces attacked the enemy garrison during the middle of 1943. On October 20, 1948, still recovering from the war, the entire municipality was ruined by a fire.

The boom of the logging industry during the 1950s up the middle of 1970s has made Butuan the "Timber City of the South". The outcome of which was the influx of business and fortune seekers from other provinces. The once lethargic town suddenly became a bustling locality. The flourishing logging industry inspired and prompted Congressman Marcos M. Calo to file a bill converting Butuan into a city. On August 2, 1950, Butuan became a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 523 otherwise known as the City Charter of Butuan. Butuan was re classified in 1985 into Highly Urbanized City Status. By February 25, 1995 an act converted the four provinces of Northeastern Mindanao into the CARAGA Region, with BUTUAN City as the Regional Center.

From being a chartered city, Butuan was reclassified into a highly urbanized city on February 7, 1985 pursuant to the provision of section 166 and 168 of Local Government code of 1997 and Memorandum circular 83-49 of the ministry of local Government. The re-classification was based on its outcome and population as certified by the ministry of finance and national census and statistics office.

oic, well ok lang. anyway nice to hear your from the province of dinagat islands, as what they call it now. actually ako mga kaliwat gikan sab didto, from cagdianao also came from the prominent piliticians family too. i always visited that island for our annual clan reunion. however i now live in mainland surigao, i frequently visited butuan city kay naa man sad me balay sa butuan somewhere at libertad, along the national highway, that is why i knew naman a little about butuan, just a little lang naman. but my knowledge is very limited as far butuan development is concern kay most of my time spend it in surigao coz my business is doing great man pud diri.

anyway, i love both cities but you just cant compare the two coz they cater on different aspects lalo na sa business investments. surigao is more on tourism and mining and other heavy related industries. that is why the whole of nonoc island was declared as special economic zone for heavy industries. butuan naman caters sa lain nga aspects but it is not fair (for me) for butuan to be compared only to surigao city coz category based its a fact that butuan is regions 13 regional center, though surigao is not far behind.

Nga pala.what happened to the Golden Tara? Why was it in Chicago?..May plans ba ang local government ng Butuan to have it returned?

some of the most valuable pieces of relics found in Suatan-Sosompit area and Ambago are now stored in the Banko Sentral Museum in Manila as there is no temperature controlled facility at the Butuan Regional Museum..

the past administartion of Congressman Banaag failed in securing the Golden Tara from the Chicago Museum of Natural History...although..there is a congressional request in collaboration with the Philippine Embassy and National Museum to acquire this most valuable relic and evidence of an advanced civilization of pre Hispanic Philippines

DFA seeks 100% hike in funds to aid OFWs

4 embassies, 2 consulates general to be opened

By Veronica Uy

MANILA, Philippines -- The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday asked the Senate for a 100 percent increase in funds it uses to assist overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

At the budget hearing, Secretary Alberto Romulo asked for PP100 million for the DFA’s assistance-to-nationals (ATN) fund next year, double this year’s P51 million; and P30 million for its legal assistance fund (LAF), double the current P15 million.

The ATN fund is usually used to repatriate undocumented OFWs who wish to go home; the repatriation costs for documented OFWs are shouldered by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

On the other hand, the LAF is used to pay for the legal fees of OFWs who find themselves in legal trouble in their host country.

“There is a need to increase these funds because right now they are almost depleted,” the secretary said.

At the same time, Romulo told the hearing of the Senate sub-committee on finance that, with its proposed 2008 budget of P10.53 billion, the department plans to open four more embassies -- in Dublin, Ireland; Lisbon, Portugal; Helsinki, Finland; and Warsaw, Poland -- and two consulates general -- in Chong Qing and Macau, both in China -- next year .

The new foreign posts, he said, are meant to assist OFWs who have begun to flock to these places and to increase the possible trade with them. In particular, he said the consulate general in Chong Qing is seen to help meet the P30-billion trade and investment targets with China by 2010.

Inside the country, Romulo also said the DFA plans to add five more regional consular offices to service the needs of passport applicants in the provinces. These are in Cotabato, Baguio, Palawan, Butuan, and Bacolod City.

of course, being a landmark infrastructure and the second cable stayed bridge all over the country and the first and only in the country with the longest road span...

and has decongested the city center and the Magsaysay Bridge from heavy daily load of traffic...besides also paving the urbanization of the city's southern barangays too

but could be better if its name was simply Butuan Bridge rather than named after an influential family in malacanang

I agree with you Bob. But I hope our local government will maintain cleanliness of our rivers especially Agusan river kung saan itatayo ung broadwalk.

Yep! that's what I thought. INSHALAH!

once ma rehabilitate na siya, the old Magsaysay bridge will retain its arched type steel superstructure....it will however be reinforced by adding lightweight steel at its span and base...

about additional lanes of the bridge....I think it would be better to build a new bridge to the north proximal to Magsaysay....as an added diversion of traffic flow

meron pa bang mga logs na pinapadaan sa Agusan River?

I think none now...as these logs needs to pass to several PENRO and CENRO points along the highways from agusan del sur...

I agree with you Bob. But I hope our local government will maintain cleanliness of our rivers especially Agusan river kung saan itatayo ung broadwalk. It's full of shame na madumi ung river tas ang ganda ng broadwalk. Like Marikina, ang ganda ng broadwalk nila tas ang linis ng river kse may nag mi-maintain. Im sure na susuportahan ni Mayor Daku yang project na yan... we will be amazed once matapos ung project.:) :) :)

the river looks green with all the squalor of squatters before rlocated to a big government housing in Pagatpatan...what you will see in the both sides of the riverbanks are hard wood trees...which shall soon complement the UN MDG-Butuan LGU funded Boardwalk and Heritage Park project

The rivers of Butuan City can be navigated as far as I have observed based on the pictures. I mean the rivers can be passed by commercial ships.
Therefore I find Butuan City's location not only a coastal city wherein commercial or passenger ships will dock, but a city on rivers.
I believe Butuan in the future will have this kind of state.

but the Port in Masao (also in Butuan along butuan Bay) is more capable of handling bigger cargo ships....sharing load with nearby Nasipit Baseport facility

only interisland vessels the size of a typical trans asia or cokaliong boat (if you have seen it in cebu) can enter from the river mouth upstream to Poyohon district (where the riverine port is located now)....

Agusan Marsh can be accessed from Agusan del Sur hi way travel inland and taking a motorized banca

In 1917 a 21-carat golden figurine of a female Hindu deity was found by a Manobo woman on a muddy bank of Wawa River, upper Agusan. This ancient figure seated in lotus position weighs nearly 4 pounds. The image signifies a single cultural sphere that developed in the archipelagic regions of Southeast Asia during the height of trade between Butuan and the rest of the Sri Vijaya Empire.

FilAms rally around Butuan girl's Virginia poll bid
By RODNEY J. JALECO
ABS-CBN NORTH AMERICA NEWS BUREAU
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/velle225.jpg
WASHINGTON D.C. - A Mindanao native who is a leading contender in a Virginia electoral contest next month wants to crack down on illegal immigrants in her district as part of a tough anti-crime agenda.

It’s an uphill climb: Vellie Hall is the Republican bet, running against the incumbent county supervisor who’s held the post on-and-off since 1995, in a region long dominated by Democrats. But if she pulls it off, she will be the highest elected Filipino American in Northern Virginia.

"It’s the prime responsibility of the federal government but the consequences of illegal immigration are being felt in our communities," she said.

Hall sold doughnuts and vegetables on the streets of Butuan City as a kid before destiny saw her immigrate to the US in 1981.

More than anything else, she sees the inherent unfairness of illegal immigration. "There are rules that should be followed. Nobody should enter through the backdoor, everyone should enter just like what I did," she said.

"I resent the fact that people are cutting lines when there are qualified immigrants waiting 10, 15 years to enter the US. I think it’s unfair for them," she added.

Illegal immigration is a highly sensitive issue especially in Fairfax’s Mason District where over 60 percent of voters belong to minorities. Fairfax is part of the Greater Washington growth corridor, which many say is fueled by rapid expansion of the immigrant population, particularly by Hispanics and Asians.

This has stretched government resources and services. Crime, in particular, has shot up in Mason District. Hall says cases of rape have increased 100 percent this year, burglaries by 60 percent.

"All these illegal immigrants involved in crime should be rounded up, arrested and deported," she said.

Some districts in nearby Maryland have enacted draconian measures, depriving medical services to illegal immigrants and their families, and ordering the police to check residency papers of suspects including those stopped for ordinary traffic violations.

"There are a lot of really, very angry voters," Hall said. She’s tapping into this mounting frustration to convince voters it’s time for a change by doing it the old, reliable but foot-blistering way – pounding the streets and knocking on doors.

And the Filipino American community is responding to her spirited campaign, rallying around her candidacy. Among her supporters are Fausto "Sonny" Acuna and his wife Melite. They run TAC Technologies, a large, successful consulting firm with contracts in the state and defense departments, among others.

TAC Technologies teaches counter-terrorism strategies to police organizations of countries allied to the US. It helped develop and implement the Peace Corps’ international finance operations and is involved in the Pentagon’s international technology and security, industrial affairs, IT, interoperability and special studies programs.

Acuna was part of the technical management team that developed the B-1 bomber, Tomahawk cruise missiles and Titan IV space rocket. He serves as a member of the Science and Technology Advisory Council under the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

"Obviously, she’s not running for Filipinos," Sonny tells ABS-CBN News. "She’s running for the entire population of the county."

The Acunas's home and business are both based in Fairfax county.

"I know the first [on] her list is to serve the needs of Fairfax county. Having said that, as a Filipino I’m truly touched by the empowerment. There [have] been very, very few of us Filipinos who’ve gone into public office," he explained, echoing an oft-repeated lament by some Filipino American leaders that the large Filipino community in the US has not really translated into a solid, credible political power base.

Hall recounted how she met "kababayans" (countrymen) at a church recently, asking them to help her candidacy. The couple looked confused, she recalled, finally saying that they were residents of Burke county (a more distant area of northern Virginia).

"I asked them if they could just wear my campaign pin because people will be curious. They will ask who’s that? But they just looked at me, as if asking ‘What’s in it for me?,'" she said with a perplexed laugh.

"But that’s OK," she said. "I’m the first one to try reaching out to them. It’s slow going but we’re empowering our 'kababayans' in the halls of politics. We want to show them that Filipinos are united."

With about 30 days left before the local polls, Hall said several big restaurants in Fairfax are already calling her, trying to out-volunteer each other to host her victory party.

Milo marathon goes to Butuan
October 10,2007

The National Milo Marathon returns to Butuan City on Sunday for its final qualifying leg in Mindanao this year.

At stake are six berths – three in the men’s and three in the women’s divisions – for the Milo Marathon grand finals slated on Nov. 18 in Metro Manila where the country’s best long-distance runners vie for the crown and the P75,000 cash purse.

Now on its 31st season, the annual foot race held in partnership with Bayview Park Hotel-Manila, adidas and the Department of Tourism is expected to draw more than 4,000 runners on Sunday.

Organizing the run in Butuan City is Ben Dacera in cooperation with Leonardo Yu, Nestle regional distributor for North Mindanao.

Most of the participants, however, are fielded in the 5K side event and the Kiddies 3K age-group race. Also on hand for this Sunday’s festivities are the inter-school running contest and the much-awaited cheer-dance competition.

According to Milo AVP for Sports Pat Goc-ong, a total cash prize of P159,000 will be given away to the winners on Sunday.

Dacera also announced that Butuan City Mayor Democrito Plaza, congressman Jose "Joeboy" Aquino II, and Vice Mayor Dino Sanchez will start the 21K, 5K, and 3K races from the Butuan City Plaza exactly 6 a.m. They will also be on hand to award the prizes at the awarding rites starting at 7:30 a.m

1st Caraga Region Engineering, Architecture and Technology Educators (CREATE) Forum

by Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY (October 5) -- "One of the hallmarks of the higher education institutions of Caraga and their faculty members is a dynamic and innovative culture to constantly evolve and grow," said Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Caraga Regional Director Joanna Cuenca in her keynote address delivered before the participants of the 1st Caraga Region Engineering, Architecture and Technology Educators (CREATE) Forum held this morning, October 5 at Luciana Convention Center here.

Addressing before the faculty members of the three disciplines, Dir. Cuenca emphasized the new possibilities brought about by the power of technology and education. "There are new possibilities in education, thanks to the power of education. Just as the invention of the printing press revolutionized education, the creative power of the computer and the availability of information on the Internet have expanded our horizons," she said.

Cuenca also said "the people are now witnessing the rapid unfolding possibilities where applications seem infinite and only limited by man's imagination."

Moreover, Cuenca urged the participants who are also educators to develop sound partnership with corporate and non-profit organizations to rapidly enable engineers, architects, and technologists to become the prime movers of development for the Caraga Region. "In doing so, we have the bear in mind that there should be a balance of social and environmental responsibilities," Cuenca said.

Cuenca further pointed out that educators must harness the character of being dedicated and committed to work to drive the necessary improvements and ensure their role as prime movers of the development of the Caraga Region.

http://bp3.blogger.com/_1dvJ8_-SP7A/RwmWIfCfxSI/AAAAAAAABHw/pBbuGrfBbzA/s320/P1010096.JPG http://bp2.blogger.com/_GdpSKFPEc1k/RwmLEvx9FkI/AAAAAAAAB8o/8ihvtwvDnWM/s320/P1010151.JPG

Before ending the keynote speech, Cuenca reminded the educators to be patient and hardworking. "As educators, you carry a heavier burden on your shoulders, that of molding the minds, the hearts, and the spirits of our young students, so that they in turn will carry on the job of being prime movers not only of the region but also of the nation as well," disclosed Cuenca.

The 1st Caraga Region Engineering, Architecture and Technology Educators (CREATE) Forum will have its culmination activity tomorrow, Saturday, October 6 where the participants are set to have a technical tour and side trip, where the participants will be toured to flood control projects of the city, and sites including the newly-constructed 1.2-billion-peso Diosdado Macapagal Bridge in Barangay Bingkilan, this city; Power Barge in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte; and the Balanghai Shrine in Barangay Libertad, also from this city.

Hosting the forum are: Engr. Corsino Odtojan of the College of Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT) of Northern Mindanao State Institute of Science and Technology (NORMISIST), Engr. Humphrey Ariel Tagapolot of Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) Dean of the College of Engineering (COE), and Engr. Levy Grana, Dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) of Saint Joseph Institute of Technology (SJIT), who is also the President of CREATE.

Although unti-utni na rin inimplement ng Butuan City ung mga tricycles, there are some various areas na bawal ang tricycles. Butuan's getting into that but kelangan smooth. Buti nga ang Philippines magaganda ang mga tricycles compared to India ang Thailand.

Gaisano & Otis mall are the same full mall. But i think Otis Mall will be replaced by NCCC Mall. SM City, Big R, Capitol commercial complex, Ororama & Plaza Mall are still on the proposed...Hope BobBXU can have the info for this...

based on the pictures posted here they have PUJ's taxis and busses ... ang akin lang eh sana i-regulate/allocate ang road usage... in that way they can make the city a lot more beautiful ...

I have to agree on this..

The magic terms should be proper road usage...we cannot just put safety and order behind just because of someone elses living.....

doing these need not extinguishing anyone.....it is just a matter of REGULATION and implementation of proper road use..

the city is now more descriminate in the issuance of trike permits and are more liberal with PUJs, V-hires and taxis as part of improving the city's inner and outer city transport..

in line with this as what was drafted under the city traffic management plan during the leadership of then councilor Jo Balderas..

....the entire North asnd South Montilla Blvd. shall be restricted to trikes....so is the Doongan and Masao Port Roads...

i thik its just a matter of political will if the plan shall be implemented to the letter..

speaking of Butuan's eastern bank....it is one of the first sites of then Butuan poblacion diring the Spanish times when the town moved from Magallanes upstream to Banza....however the old town was ravaged and looted to the ground by moros....and what was left is the Banza Church Ruins...from Banza, it was ordered that the poblacion be moved more upstream this time in Agao.. where the the city's commercial nucleus sprung..and spread

take note of the century old acacia tree...still up up to now...a living witness when the old wooden two towered cathedral was destroyed during the war and rebuilt during late forties...

the acacia tree was even there when the park was then named Guingona Park
