I think all of us here forumers live in urban barangays. Remember, we have 81 barangays [kung wa ko masayop] and most of them are rural areas. Ang baha kay tua sa south which are rural areas. Tua didto ang baha... When we departed from butuan, we saw the flooded areas down south. The plane made an unusual path bound to Cebu kay nilikay sila sa turbulence. We saw the flooded areas down south. :(

3 flights from Manila and 1 flight from Cebu for CEBU PACIFIC were all cancelled. Surprisingly PAL arrived at exactly 3:34 PM. Dati takot ang PAL magland pag maulan. This time PAL made it.

ang rice field, kung bag-o lang na s'ya natanum, ok lang bisa'g malapawan nag tubig. ayaw lang matabunan ok lapok nga baga kay mamatay gyud.

anyways, here's the latest sat pix. note nga naa pa'y baga nga dag-um naa sa ubos. ang most probably, paingon pa na pataas and may result to more rains in the coming hours...

Nitawag akong sister didto sa Agusan del Sur nga dako na kuno ang baha ug nisaka na ang tubig sa ilang balay and ang government rescue groups with their inflatable boats kay ni convince ug bakwet nila pero wa sila mosugot kay anad na sila ining baha. For them ang baha is a blessing for them. Kahibalo na man sila nga basta January tingbaha man gyud so wal gyud sila mananom ug humay sa November ug December. Ila gyud huwaton ang baha kay naay maayo nga gibuhat ang nature sa ila with this flood. Sulti pa niya nga mao ni ang panahon nga ang mga ilaga nga mo destroy sa ilang humay maanod ug mangamatay thus safe na ang pagtanom nila after the flood much more leaving a fertile soil to plant.

They are used to this situation mao nga bisan naa na ang mga rescue boats wa gihapon mamakwit. Good with the presence of Agusan Marsh, dili mokusog ang baha kay ang Agusan Marsh mao na ang controlling factor sa baha sa Agusan. Kon makakita mo sa baha sa Agusan Sur as if ang tubig wala maglihok except didto gyud sa mga sapa pero sa kabalayan still ang tubig dili pareha sa uban lugar nga moderetso ug slide ang tubig. Agusan Marsh is the gift of the Agusanon when it comes to flood control. Mobakwit ra na sila basta ang baha moabot na sa atop sa balay.

hahahaha! Mau gyud na ang kalainan sa naa nay experience ug sa wa pa ka sulay sa panghitabo! Its good for city people to say this kay at most ang means of living dependent ra man sa sueldo sa gitrabahoan but for them daghan kaayong atimanon sa farm. Look what happened during Mayon Volcano's eruption, naa gihapon mga tawo nga magpabilin because they ila gihapon atimanon ang ilang panginabuhian didto maski risky na kaayo. Yes, I encounter that one previously diha sa Agusan Sur. Pwerte nakong hadloka pagsaka sa tubig pero ang mga tawo mura ug wa lay nahitabo.

Flood damage to govt infrastructures in Caraga pegged at P141M
BEN SERRANO, GMANews.TV
01/05/2011 | 12:14 PM

BUTUAN CITY-The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) office in Butuan City estimated the damage caused by recent floods and landslides to government infrastructures in the Caraga region in Mindanao at P141 million.

The DPWH report, coursed through Philippine Information Agency regional office in Butuan City, said the amount includes the cost of the damage to the following:
# roads and bridges in Surigao del Sur: P69.4 million;
# roads, bridges, and schools in Agusan del Sur: P69 million;
# roads and bridges in Surigao del Norte: P346,006.23;
# roads and bridges in San Jose, Dinagat Islands: P500,000;
# roads and bridges in Augusan del Norte: P2 million

The DPWH Caraga regional office said they are still awaiting reports from other District Engineering Offices in the region.

Damage to crops and livestock

Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture Caraga regional office still has not issued an official report on the damage to crops, livestock, and fishponds.

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Caraga regional office also has not yet issued an official report on the damage brought about by the recent floods and landslides.

The NIA Caraga is managing a huge irrigation dam at barangay San Vicente, Butuan City.

Office of Civil Defense Caraga regional director Dr. Blanche Gobenciong earlier said the damage to crops, livestock, and other agricultural products could be worth millions of pesos.

The entire Caraga region is still experiencing continuous rains as of this posting. – VVP, GMANews.TV

More domestic flights cancelled due to bad weather
By DJ Yap
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 18:27:00 01/05/2011

MANILA, Philippines—More domestic flights were called off on Wednesday due to bad weather, this time in Mindanao, following a series of cancelled flights in Luzon and the Visayas over the holidays, airport authorities said.

Cebu Pacific flight 5J 789 bound for Butuan City and scheduled to depart at 8:25 a.m. was cancelled, along with the return flight 5J 790 at 11:50 a.m., according to an advisory from the media affairs division of the Manila International Airport Authority.
Also cancelled were Air Philippines 2P 065 and 2P 066 from Manila to Surigao City and back, due to bad weather at destination, the advisory said.

Since December, bad weather has forced the cancellation of several flights to provinces in Luzon and the Visayas, especially those on the eastern side.

Butuan dad assures prices of basic commodities stabilized
By Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Jan. 5 (PIA) -- Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante, Jr. said prices of basic commodities are stabilized in the wake of massive flooding that hits not only this city but as well as the entire region and some regions in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The assurance was made by the city’s chief executive during the press conference held Wednesday (January 5) at Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) Gymnasium here.

According to Amante, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has been monitoring the prices of the basic commodities and according the department’s report, prices in the basic commodities are still stabilized.

Mayor Amante also said DTI already issued an order freezing the price increase especially in basic commodities.

FSUU president Father John Christian U. Young offered the university’s gymnasium as the operation center of the Local Risk Reduction Management of this city. (PIA-Caraga)

Gardenia plans Visayas, Mindanao expansion (http://business.inquirer.net/money/topstories/view/20110105-312714/Gardenia-plans-Visayas-Mindanao-expansion)
By Abigail L. Ho
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 20:06:00 01/05/2011

Filed Under: Economy and Business and Finance, business, Investments, Philippines - Regions
LAPU-LAPU, CEBU—Just after inaugurating its new plant here yesterday, Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc. is already planning to invest hundreds of millions of pesos in new plants in the Visayas and Mindanao over the next two to three years.

In an interview with reporters, Gardenia president and general manager Simplicio Umali Jr. said the company was planning to invest up to P150 million in its Cebu operations, alone, this year.

Gardenia invested an initial P20 million to “re-manufacture” its start-up plant in Laguna and transfer it to Lapu-Lapu City. The facility, which he said was as good as new and had a life span of another 10-15 years, had the capacity to produce 2,000 loaves of bread an hour or almost 50,000 loaves a day.

Based on the initial response of customers in Cebu and nearby Bohol, he said Gardenia was now considering putting up a fully automated plant in Cebu, capable of producing thrice the volume of the existing facility here.

A new, fully automated plant, he said, would cost P500 million to P650 million to put up.

“The Cebu plant was actually not part of our (capital expenditure) program for the year, but due to demand pressure, we fast-tracked the project,” he said.

The plant, although formally inaugurated just yesterday, had been operating since last month, producing initially four bread variants: the Classic White Bread, High Fiber Wheat Bread, and the Chocolate Chip and California Raisin flavored loaves.

Gardenia sales and marketing manager Nestor Constancia said 60 percent of the Lapu-Lapu plant’s output was distributed within Cebu. The balance was sold in Bohol, Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, and Iligan.

“Bohol is also a good, big market. It’s near Cebu so it’s easy to ship via (roll-on, roll off vessels). The Davao market is as big as Cebu so it makes sense for us to also put up a plant there. From there, we can also reach General Santos,” he said.

Umali said the company was also planning to put up another plant in either Davao or Cagayan de Oro to reach the Mindanao market. This was expected to materialize within two to three years.

we cant really say na oa ra ang media.. some of their sources came from the government agencies din.. so we cant say na sobra ang media mag padako sa balita. IMO, ang balita regarding sa butuan floods, and based on the news articles, medyo accurate na siya. Nindot na ang balita ron.. accurate na xa.. mga 80%, i think

Atty. Raymond Fortun was born July 31, 1964 in Manila. He came to prominence as part of the legal defense team of former Philippine President Joseph Estrada in his plunder case against the Sandiganbayan in the early 2000s.

Atty. Fortun is most known as a lawyer to Erap Estrada. In early 2008, Fortun's name again gained media attention as the whistleblower to an alleged attempted coup plot against the Arroyo administration led by Homobono Adaza and some military personnel. The case also involved involved estafa and swindling charges.

In 2009, another headline making case he handled was the Antipolo golf brawl between businessman Delfin Dela Paz, for whom he served as legal counsel, and Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser C. Pangandaman.

Today, he is a high profile criminal lawyer to many celebrities including Kris Aquino, Katrina Legarda, Willie Revillame and Dr. Vicky Belo of the Belo Medical Group. He is the founder of the Raymond Fortun Law Offices located at 137 CRM Ave, BF Homes Almanza, Las Piñas and can be reached at (02) 805-2493.

Since 1993, he also serves as Senior Partner at the Fortun Narvasa and Salazar Law office located at Makati.

Atty. Fortun graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1988.

Atty. Fortun is the younger brother of Sigfrid Fortun, another Filipino high profile lawyer. He is married and has three children. In his spare time, he indulges in sports such as golf, table tennis, badminton and basketball. He is also musically inclined.

His other current passion is photography. In 2008, he started doing wedding photography coverage as a pastime and creative outlet. His work can be seen on his website.

Raymond is a Butuanon by ancestry, being the son of retired Judge Wilelmo Fortun who belongs to the huge Fortun clan in Butuan City.

CITY OF CABADBARAN RANKED 1ST IN EFFICIENT COLLECTION OF
REAL PROPERTY TAX AMONG ALL LGUs IN CARAGA REGION

http://www.cabadbarantoday.com/cbr/downloads/plaque.jpg

Since the start of the administration of City Mayor Dale B. Corvera, the City of Cabadbaran has always been consistent in earning a spot as one of the Top 5 LGUs all over Caraga Region in as far as the efficient and effective collection of Real Property Tax is concerned. But last December 14, 2010, Cabadbaran City made another mark in its history when the Bureau of Local Government Finance of the Department of Finance (BLGF-DOF) – Caraga Region cited the city as the 1st placer in the outstanding collection of Real Property Taxes for 2009 because of its 119.43% collection efficiency beating its own 106.03% record in 2008 where the city ranked No. 3. City Mayor Dale B. Corvera was truly proud to receive the recognition in behalf of his city for it signifies the trust and confidence of the Cabadbaranons to his administration’s leadership. The award is indeed a living proof of the satisfaction of the people to all the plans and programs implemented by his administration which is basically more on giving social services that will help promote the welfare of his people. The people’s diligence in paying their taxes on time is a clear show of their willingness to give their support in realizing City Mayor Corvera’s vision of a progressive City of Cabadbaran.

Though I am not there but I based my observation from first hand account of my relatives living near the Magsaysay Bridge, another relative at Guingona Subdivision, 4 review students from SJIT living in Babag, Guingona, Ochoa and Alviola villages, and two review students from FSUU coming from Baan and Ampayon. Maybe upper portion of Butuan was not flooded. Other relatives told me about the situation also specially in Magallanes and Agusan del Sur.

My condolence by the way to the family of the former Dean of Engineering and Civil Engineering Instructor of FSUU, Engr. Edgar Allan Sumalinog, PhD., who passed away last Jan. 4 because of cardiac arrest. FSUU was forced to get Engr. Angelei Plaza, 10th placer of the Nov. 2010 Civil Engineering board exam, to handle the subjects of Engr. Sumalinog. He is my friend since college. May he Rest in Peace

Stakeholders urge LDRRMC to improve communication systems
By: Robert E. Roperos

http://piacaraga.blogspot.com/

BUTUAN CITY (7 January) – Stakeholders of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC) on Thursday (January 6) recommended to improve communication systems especially the equipment and facilities used in times of disaster.

Speaking before the council during the assessment meeting at the City Hall’s conference room, Ms. Agnes Carlos of the Brgy. Affairs Office of this city presented the situation where communication facilities such as mobile phones will be “useless” if its battery is already drained or “lowbatt”.

With this, stakeholders urge the council to find ways to improve communication facilities to ensure that proper monitoring will transpire during disasters.

Meanwhile, Butuan Land Traffic Transportation Management Office (LTTMO) chief Alfredo Radaza offered to use CLEAN 10 Philippines’ two repeater towers which are situated in Mt. Mayapay, the highest peak in the city. Radaza is a member of the said communication group.

“We can offer our two repeaters in Mt. Mayapay because in time of calamities, we cannot depend on cell phones. When the networks of cell phones bagged down, it is true that cell phones will be useless”, Radaza said.

Radaza added that using repeater tower guarantees that communication will still be delivered in times of calamities. (PIA-Caraga)

BUTUAN CITY (7 January) – Department of Education (DepEd) Butuan City Schools Division Superintendent Marilou Dedumo on Thursday (January 6) lauded Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante, Jr. in his effort to respond the immediate needs of victims of the massive flooding which recently hits the city.

During the assessment meeting of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC) held at the conference room of Butuan City Hall, Supt. Dedumo congratulated the Mayor for the outstanding performance in responding to the problems arise during the wake of the massive flooding.

“Mayor Amante immediately called the attention of those who are involved in the provision of the foods, medical team and for having close coordination with DepEd in monitoring the situation in all schools in the city,” Dedumo said.

Dedumo also thanked Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) through Fr. John Chistian U. Young – university President for allowing the city government to use the university’s gymnasium as the LDRRMC operation center. She likewise thanked and congratulates stakeholders of LDRRMC for a job well done.

When asked by the Mayor if there are problems and concerns which were not addressed, Dedumo said all problems were already given proper attention and were handled smoothly. (PIA-Caraga)

we cant really say na oa ra ang media.. some of their sources came from the government agencies din.. so we cant say na sobra ang media mag padako sa balita. IMO, ang balita regarding sa butuan floods, and based on the news articles, medyo accurate na siya. Nindot na ang balita ron.. accurate na xa.. mga 80%, i think

oh yes we can say again and again OA RA ANG MEDIA in fact in many instances.

maybe we have heard national media portraying the entire mindanao island as if caught all in fire whenever an isolated skirmish erupts in some isolated far flung barrio somewhere in maluso basilan or in maguindanao...

or portraying as if the islands is inhabited by bandits just because there are bandits thriving in the forests of Lanao etc etc.

or by saying almost half of caraga or butuan for that matter as flodded and floating and flushing and what have you WHEN in fact we are still sitting and breathing life here in a cafe still enjoying coffee and wi-fi all by God's grace

GMA Kapuso Foundation to extend assistance to Butuan City flood victims
By Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Jan. 7 (PIA) -- “GMA Kapuso Foundation of GMA 7 TV Network has extended assistance to victims of the massive flooding here,” thus reported City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) Officer Aldeberan Mordeno during the assessment meeting of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC) held Thursday (January 6) at the Butuan City Hall.

According to Mordeno, the foundation has already contacted Vice Mayor Lawrence Lemuel H. Fortun and has manifested to extend assistance to the city’s flood victims who are housed in evacuation centers.

“Even if the evacuees have already returned to their homes, they can still receive such assistance from the foundation,” Mordeno said.

GMA Kapuso Foundation is a socio-civic organization organized by GMA Network Inc. to facilitate social programs and outreach to the public.

Since it was founded in 1991, the GMA Kapuso Foundation has been touching the lives of communities everywhere. Its projects help uplift the life of countless beneficiaries.

Implemented singly or in partnership with other agencies, the foundation's thrusts are focused on helping and supporting impoverished families, needy children, calamity victims, prisoners and ex-prisoners, aspiring singers and songwriters, including dependents of GMA employees.

The GMA Network-organized foundation has already extended relief assistance to flood victims in Tago, Surigao del Sur on Wednesday, January 5, 2011. (PIA-Caraga)

Butuanon Athletes to be given citations and incentives

As a way of giving honor to the champion athletes of our city, SP Ordinance 3679-2010, titled “AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING GUIDELINES FOR THE GRANT OF HONOR AND OF CASH INCENTIVE AWARD TO DESERVING NATIONAL AND LOCAL ATHLETES WHO WON TITLES, MEDALS OR AWARDS IN NATIONAL OR INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS OF INDIVIDUAL OR TEAM SPORTS, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES,” was enacted on December 30, 2010.

Primarily sponsored by Councilor Jaime M. Cembrano, Jr., this ordinance gives recognition and even incentives to athletes who have excelled in their respective fields per competition.

The most basic recognition is the “Mahinang Guid Hong Butuanon” (The Butuanon can do it!) medal, which is conferred to a Butuanon athlete for representing the City at the very least in the regional level.

Going a notch higher boosts the scope of incentives. Whether competing individually or playing for a team, a Butuanon athlete who wins a prize or citation will receive monetary rewards from the City Government, as follows:

Apart from these, the City Government, through a Sangguniang Panlungsod resolution, may adopt any person who excelled or excels in his/her chosen field of Sports, for giving inspiration and lifting the hopes and dreams of the Butuanon population. With this citation, an honorary son or daughter of Butuan will be conferred an Elisa Rosales Ochoa Memorial Excellence in Sports Award.

With this ordinance enforced and publicly disseminated, the Butuanon athletes have a very enticing motivation to excel in their respective fields. For in what honor they bring to our city as medalled athletes, they, too shall be recognized and rewarded by the City Government.

Kon naay water lily then it means nga limpyo ang sapa biologically kay ang water lily mao man ang mo filter sa mga hugaw sa sapa compared anang sapa nga limpyo tan-awon unya walay water lily. Expect nga naay maanod ngaw water lily kay they came from Agusan Marsh nga daghan kaayo na didto ug maoy gihimong nesting ground sa mga migratory birds.

ang presence ba ng water lilies an indication nga hugaw ang tubig? because i been swimming agusan river before(maybe more than 2 times) and i remember seeing those lilies floating around already..:). i admit i almost got drowned there, but only did it for fun because of some some palaboy laboy friends were doing it too. my grade school classmates told me it was not a good thing to do..but i didnt mind because it was an adventure to me and also i learned how my palaboy friends enjoy life at young age without the need for expensive toys.

Agusan River is not dirty only it is murky! However these days because of the mining operations done in the upper end of Agusan River it is slowly becoming lethal as Mercury and Cyanide are being used in separating gold from the ore. In our previous study of the fishes caught along the mouth of Agusan River we found out that some contain traces of mercury though at very, very minute amount. As per interview of different fishermen at the mouth of the river, the caught fishes that sometimes when you open their inside and get the entrails the odor is really obnoxious that they say its not fit to eat though freshly caught. Hope Minamata disease will not happen.

My avatar shows a "sapyaw" which is a common fishing fixture at the mouth of the river. Yes, I took this picture along the river bank of Magallanes. My relatives (Piencenaves Clan) lives here. Magallanes was then a barangay of Butuan like Masao and Lumbocan but it gained its townhood in 1972 when the logging industry was at its peak. Downstream from Butuan will take you 30 minutes in going there and upstream to Butuan is about an hour. You can take a land trip also via Cabadbaran.

thanks for the info..agusan river was a part of my childhood and education when i was still very young.. something that majority of my classmates at butuan central didn't have before (kay kadiri daw ang suba! ha ha!). to think about it they were right because sometimes i see some things that were floating in the river that is unhealthy to describe ha ha! mga padala daw gikan sa upper agusan.. but during that time i didnt care because i was having fun with my friends. i only stopped going there when i started attending grade 3.

i remember my older brother telling me about that logging boom before in magallanes (kay masarap daw mo adto og fiesta didto kay daghan kaayoy handa kay kwartahan ang mga tao sa magallanes). also there were those white luxury speed boats crisscrossing agusan river with its caucasian passengers (my brother said they were managers and technicians at the former sta ines logging corp being transported between butuan and magallanes on weekends). i was still very small then but it was a sight to behold at the river because of the boats high speed.

i used to fish "sael" with my "kawayan rod" and tamsi in that old pier. which used to be a shipping dock near the fire department (i dont know if that "boardwalk" still exist today). pagkatapos kung walay mabingwit katkat na lang og mansanitas para naay ma kitkit he he. but i did remember nga naay mga oil floating already in the water always. my guess is that those "lantsas" irresponsibly dumped them into the river without thinking about how it will affect the water and its marine environment.

i have been to a lot of places in our country from northern luzon, palawan to as far as jolo but never been to pagadian. what i observed is that each place has its own "uniqueness".. for me what makes butuan way different from the others are the educational institutions the city has.. just like urios (which was and still is.. world class in quality of education)...which also happened to be my high school alma mater! (bias ba? he! he!).

so, Pagadianongyud enjoy butuan. og ayaw lang ka kuyawan bai.. because butuan has a lot to offer sa imong senses..

Ask lng ha.. naa ko na dungog nga balita nga dili napod modayon ang robinson ky gibabagan sa pulitiko? unsa ni ka true? cguro mao ning yuta sa kajima...

kinsa na politiko?

si Engineer serge Pascual?

as far as I know the yuta which kajima used to lease from First Consolidated Bank is formerly owned by Engineer Serge Pascual (but na embargo daw by First Consolidated Bank)

Pascual's party last year questioned First Consolidated Bank's deed of sale to Robinson's Land.

But a court settlement was finally reached last December (as Mayor Amante announced over DXBC) that the Kajima lot (formerly owned by Pascual) is now legally under First Consolidated Bank and First Consolidated Bank's transaction with Robinson's Land is legal

Butuan CDCC holds emergency meeting to address calamity
By Agnes B. Tumulak

BUTUAN CITY, Jan. 8 (PIA) -- On Thursday (January 6)at 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon, the City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC) here spearheaded by Honorable Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante Jr. conducted a meeting to discuss about the situation of the city due to the impending flood threat brought about by the heavy downpour of rain since last Sunday (Jan. 2). It was also organized to formulate rescue plans and procedures for immediate response to the current situation of the city.

The meeting was attended by the office heads of various departments at Butuan City Hall together with the line agencies of the relief operation like Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine National Police (PNP), Air Force of the Philippines (AFP), and other non-government organizations like Philippine Red Cross and Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) team in the city.

The agenda during the meeting were: Rescue teams and groups are expected to stay on alert to address any assistance and emergency cases of the people even though the rain has stopped; DepEd Butuan issued a suspension order of classes to all elementary and secondary both public and private schools in the city (effective Jan. 4 and was lifted by Jan. 5 except to those areas still flooded);Communication should be strengthened between the rescue team and relief operation group with the Barangay officials of the affected barangays for easy and immediate response to every need.

By declaring the city under the State of Calamity through the SP Ordinance No. 004-2011, the government could gain access to the 30% calamity fund which could be of great help to the relief and rescue operation of the team.

During the rescue act, more than 62 barangays consisting of 17,565 families in Butuan City were submerged to flood waters with more than 22 million pesos were tallied as agricultural damages and worthing 11 million pesos for infrastructure damages.

Hon. Amante extends his gratefulness and recognized the efforts of all line agencies and support groups by giving them certificates of appreciation for their immediate assistance and strong cooperation to help the families in distress due to the calamity. (PIO-Butuan City/PIA-Caraga)

Butuan gears for 'Kahimunan 2011'

By MIKE U. CRISMUNDOJanuary 10, 2011, 4:35pm

http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/297623/butuan-gears-kahimunan-2011

LIBERTAD, Butuan City, Philippines – Preparations went into high gear for the holding of the “Kahimunan 2011” festival where participants coming from various provinces and cities in the Caraga Region and nearby areas are expected to converge here to join the big event slated on the third Sunday of this month.

The festival got its name from the word “gathering” which means Kahimunan in the local dialect of this city.

Kahimunan festival is meant to be the gathering of the faithful to show gratitude towards one of the city’s patron saints, the Child Jesus. It is this city’s version of Cebu City’s Sinulog Festival.

Organizers said winners in the “Kahimunan” competition will receive huge amounts while the runners up will also receive trophies, cash, and other benefits.
Officials of this village led by its chieftain, Vincent Del Rosario, already conducted a series of meetings to see to it that the conduct of this event is orderly, peaceful, and successful.

“Aside from the Kahimunan parade, we are also adding several activities so that our festival will be more colorful and meaningful,” said Del Rosario.
The Diocese of Butuan led by Bishop Juan De Dios Pueblos, former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, already gave its support for the success of the festivities, in celebration of the feast of Señor Sto. Niño.

As this developed, Chief Supt. Reynaldo S. Rafal, Police Regional Office 13 (PRO 13) director, ordered the Butuan City Police Office (BCPO), the region’s traffic management office, and other law enforcement agencies to closely coordinate with village officials here for the peaceful and orderly festivities, especially on traffic management.

Rafal said he is also concerned on big number of tourists, both foreign and domestic, who started arriving to witness the festivities.

Rafal ordered officials of the newly created “Tourist Police Force” to be on the ground for the protection and safety of all tourists.

“We must redouble our efforts in securing these festivities so that it will be orderly and peaceful,” said Rafal.

Other non-government organizations (NGOs) are also busy preparing for the Kahimunan festival.

At the height of the Kahimunan Festival, the streets here leading to the Butuan Sports Complex is expected to be filled with many participants dressed in colorful costumes dancing to native and indigenous music, while a magnitude of people are expected to watch the event.
