^^

....and this is just SOUTH MONTILLA BOULEVARD area? :eek2: unbelievable!

This Southern part of Butuan is now fast becoming a little city within the city

Yeah, nice ang metered taxis. Kay ma-accumulate ra ang fare as to the distance covered. Same sa Cebu ba, ang initial fare ila is six pesos tas kung magkalayo kay mosaka ang fare. Kung more or less 1km kay ~7.00 siguro.

By the way, as a daily commuter, I hate choosy tricycle drivers. Pilian kaayo sila, dili sila magpasakay ug mga tao nga padulong south montilla blvd. not unless 2 persons or more kay kwarta lagi giapas.

nag ka anam og kadaghan tao og developments dihang dapita... how much more kung mo expand jud og insakto from Baan to Ampayon area... including the bypass road tiniwisan-maginda area.... daku kaayo ang extension sa city... need na daghan metered taxi ana :bash:

Guys, I just passed by South Montilla Blvd a while ago and I saw with my very own eyes, OUR CITY MAYOR Jun Amante wielding a grasscutter (shear), cutting the shrubbery (bushes) and cleaning up an island together with some workers! Ang kang Pascual is only about 1.1? something hectare. So what's it to Gokongwei anyway? gamay ra man na, di ba? If you're 18 now, pwede na. Do it this summer Franz. We have Jack's Driving school here ( the same Driving School that taught me ). They will only require you a Student's Permit from LTO.

I don't know how much the driving school is charging now, but during my time, I paid 200.00 for a two hour practice daily @ your own choice of time.

You know, it is better to learn from a Driving school coz the driver also has his own break, so no risk at all nga mabangga ka

2011 Agri, Fisheries Summit set

By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
January 19, 2011

http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/299382/2011-agri-fisheries-summit-set

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines — Members and stakeholders of the agricultural and fisheries sectors are expected to converge here Wednesday to participate in the 2011 Agricultural Fisheries Council (AFC) Congress slated at a downtown inland resort, hotel, and convention center in this city.

National and regional officials of the Department of Agriculture (DA) led by Secretary Proseso J. Alcala Jr. are also expected to be in full attendance during the AFC Congress.

Local officials led by City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante are likewise set to grace the big gathering.

The theme of the 2011 AFC Congress is “Bridging the Gap, Touching the Hearts of AFCs.”

Highlighting the big event is the turnover of various agricultural implements to the respective beneficiaries.

Alcala is also expected to attend a farmers’ forum in an effort to immediately address the problems and concerns of the two sectors.

It was learned that the congress will be participated in by other concerned line agencies of the government.

Earlier, President Aquino was recently here to assess the damage brought about by floods that struck the four provinces and three cities in the Caraga Region.

In his recent visit, the President witnesses the heavy damage sustained by the agriculture sector that was brought about by the flooding in the region.

Estimated damage to agriculture and fisheries reached almost P300 million, affecting thousands of farmers and fishermen.
Initially, President Aquino handed over several farm equipment and farm seeds.

As this developed, the President directed Alcala to address the needs of the farmers in the affected areas in Mindanao, especially in the Caraga Region where the floods devastated agricultural lands and fishponds.

Some coastal areas, islands in Caraga sinking due to rising sea water level
January 22, 2011, 2:35pm

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines (PNA) — Shorelines in coastal areas in Caraga Region are slowly disappearing as they are being submerged in seawater because of rising seawater.

This is according to two non-government organizations (NGOs) involved in climate change adaptations and disaster preparedness initiatives.

Botanist Teresa "Tet" Bordadera of NGO Green Coalition said they observed shores along coastlines in three Caraga provinces — Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte — were slowly disappearing as rising seawater is already eating up shores by at least 10 meters and in some areas as long as 30 to 50 meters.

Some residents along the coastlines are thus forced to relocate, she noted.

Bordadera expressed fear that a few years from now if the rising seawater level trend would continue, coastal areas including smaller Caraga islands will sink and be wiped out from the map.

Surigao del Sur province where most of the coastal areas are facing Pacific Ocean and holds the distinction as a province having the longest shoreline, is now very active in Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Initiatives.

Bordadera, in an interview Friday, told the Philippines News Agency that based on initial studies they made, at least five smaller islands in Caraga Region that are facing Pacific Ocean already sank or have been submerged by rising seawater level.

It can be recalled that a group of Filipino artists and individuals calling themselves Tiktok For Climate Change Action also claimed islands in Surigao provinces are already sinking.

Artist Ping Medina who is one of the officials of TikTok, was here in Caraga Region last December to attend a forum on Climate Change at Philippine Gateway Hotel and Convention in Surigao City. He specifically cited that Gigaquit town and surfing capital General Luna’s shores are fast disappearing.

Medina advised local government unit (LGU) officials of said town to come up with fast and effective solutions before rising seawater levels destroy lives and properties in the days to come.

Both Medina and Bordadera cited what is happening to Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean and other island states which are now also being submerged in seawater.

“And because their atolls were now submerged by ocean waters, they are now being hounded by many legal issues, their source of potable waters are being contaminated by salt waters, their livelihood is affected and the future of their children is becoming uncertain,” Bordadera added.

Bordadera stressed that now is the time for all Filipinos to do their share in preserving the country’s remaining forests to avert more calamities.

Right age nalang ang gihulatan. Thanks ate bunny.

Let's not fret too much about that now since we all know the end result of this will definitely favor RLC. Besides, Pascual's property does not cover the entirety of RLC's 10 hectares. Ang kang Pascual is only about 1.1? something hectare. So what's it to Gokongwei anyway? gamay ra man na, di ba? (or is it?) pwede ra man gani siguro nang 1 hectare ibalewala sa Robinsons  joke pero ayaw sab kay sayang. Dapat fight to the end hehehe...

We don't know yet if this is true. A forumer @ Surigao thread just posted it.

But if it is true, it is indeed a brave attempt on the part of our LGU's to embark on such aggressive move. They must have seen more of the advantageous impact it'll bring to our city more than its downsides, I don't really know.

it doesn't mean that the city gov't will have no income. we still have the existing investors paying taxes. this is only applicable to the incoming investors. without taxes from them, BXU will still be a Billionaire city.

DA Sec. Alcala turns over P8M farm materials, pledges P55M agri support to AgSur
By: David M. Suyao

BUTUAN CITY, Jan. 21 (PIA) -- Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala yesterday turned over some P8M worth of farm materials to Agusan del Sur Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza, and pledged some P55M to fund various agricultural programs in the province during a luncheon meeting with the local chief executives of the province at the Provincial Training Center in Patin-ay, Prosperidad.

According to Sec. Alcala, since the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) funds are underutilized, local government units can take advantage of the funds in order to address the needs of the municipalities. He also encouraged other non-MRDP municipalities to participate in the program.

Gov't to release P65-M farm aid to Agusan del Sur, Surigao City
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
January 22, 2011, 6:43pm

SURIGAO CITY – The Aquino administration is set to release more than P65 million worth of farm equipment and materials to Agusan del Sur and Surigao City, Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala, Jr. has said.

The amount to be released will fund various agricultural programs to enhance farm production of thousands of farmers in Agusan del Sur and this northeastern-tip city in the Caraga region.

Alcala made this assurance in separate meetings with top local government officials here and in
Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Agusan del Sur has already been assured by the agriculture secretary of P55 million worth of farm equipment
and materials while Surigao City is also assured of P10 million worth of irrigation system project.

Initially, Alcala already turned over some P14.866 million worth of farm equipment and materials to Agusan del Sur Gov. Adolph Edward G. Plaza while P2 million worth of the same farming needs were also handed over to Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol F. Matugas.

Aside from immediate farming assistance extended to farmers in these provinces, Alcala urged local government unit officials in the Caraga region to take advantage on the various multi-million development projects since the Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) funds are already underutilized, in order to address the immediate
needs of their municipalities, especially those severely devastated by the recent floods that struck the region.

The agriculture officials encouraged other non-MRDP municipalities to participate in the program.

“The only thing you should do is to put up your 10 percent counterpart in order to cope up with the sharing scheme set by the MRDP so that you can avail of the financing program,” Alcala said.

Among the agricultural materials that Alcala turned over to Agusan del Sur were: two farm tractors with an estimated cost of P4,800,000; four greenhouses worth P549,260; three computers with accessories worth P285,000; five pump engine sets worth P389,750; two open source pumps worth P170,000; two power sprayers worth P80,000; 12 heads of imported boar goats worth P936,000; 50 heads upgraded goats worth P400,000; 100 bags of certified seeds worth P120,000; and 15 family drip irrigation worth P270,000.

Alcala also considered allotting more than P800,000 to fund a soil survey and classification and land use assessment study for the agri-investment project in Agusan del Sur. The amount will be subject for
consideration of Region Xlll DA Regional Director Reinerio B. Belarmino, Jr.

At the Provincial Capitol in Patin-ay, Prosperidad town, Alcala also nodded when asked for funding support for the implementation of high-value vegetables production worth P1 million. Another P6 million counterpart fund from the DA for the establishment of liquid nitrogen plant under the United artificial insemination program was also confirmed.

As a member of the Board of the National Business Corporation (NABCOR), Alcala promised to sit during the next NABCOR meeting so that the requested P10 million from DA will be considered for the additional fund for the Corn Post-Harvest Processing and Training Center at the “Pagkain ng Bayan” in Bayugan town, Agusan del Sur.

Another P31 million fund will be subject for referral by the Secretary to the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) administrator upon submission by NIA Agusan del Sur of the estimates of the items for the completion of the Laminga Communal Irrigation Project (LMIP) in San Luis town of that same province.

::

It is indeed a very brave attempt. That's a very selfless government you've got there. Thinking about the people first before themselves. :okay:

it doesn't mean that the city gov't will have no income. we still have the existing investors paying taxes. this is only applicable to the incoming investors. without taxes from them, BXU will still be a Billionaire city.

What I meant po was there'd be no income coming from those certain investments. Their taxes will still make up a big chunk of income for the government, you see. :)

Grenades, firearms seized from 2 suspected MNLF men in Agusan del Norte
01/23/2011 | 11:48 AM

Tweet Share BUENAVISTA, Agusan del Norte — Policemen seized from two suspected local MNLF members hand grenades and firearms loaded with live ammunitions after engaging them in a brief hot pursuit operation along the stretch of the national highway in Barangay Bancasi, Butuan City on Friday evening.

Buenavista Police Chief Police Inspector Ramil Tersona said Sunday he received information Friday evening from civilian tipsters who saw two motorcycle-riding suspects wearing black shirts marked “MNLF" headed toward Butuan City and carrying firearms and explosives.

The tipsters told cops they sighted the two in Barangay Tinago, Buenavista, Agusan del Norte.

The suspects were successfully intercepted after a brief hot pursuit operation in Barangay Bancasi, just few kilometers away from the commercial center of Butuan City.

When confronted by cops the two could not present documents for the firearms they possessed.

Confiscated from the suspects were a .45 caliber pistol with two magazines and one caliber .357 revolver — both loaded with live ammunition — as well as two hand grenades.

Also seized was the motorcycle that the suspects used.

They were later identified as “Junjun" Merlin Mangadlao, 20, single, a resident of Barangay Tudela, Trento, Agusan del Sur and Asher Cortez Paguipo, 31, married and a resident of Barangay Taglatawan, Bayugan, Agusan del Sur.

The suspects are now detained at Buenavista Municipal Police Office but three unidentified persons came to the station vowing to bail out the suspects.

Police claimed they will file appropriate criminal charges against the two who refused to comment. — MRT/VS GMANews.TV

President Aquino receives 26-men crew of Balangay boats

By U.S. News Agency / Asian

President Benigno S. Aquino III received Thursday afternoon the 26 crew members of the three-boat Balangay Expedition, which was a symbolic journey to retrace and recapture the ancient pre-Hispanic history as seafaring and trading royal civilized people intended to make the Filipinos proud and believe in their virtues.

The voyage revived the Philippines’ sea-faring tradition that was recorded in the 16th century Chronicles of Pigafetta. Balangay is also known as the oldest pre-Hispanic watercraft.

Headed by team leader, former Transportation and Communication Undersecretary Arturo T. Valdez, a veteran mountaineer who founded the Mount Everest Expedition, the crew presented to the President two replicas and a scroll charting the route of the three boats from Butuan to the six countries in Asia.

The expedition first sailed throughout the archipelago and wherever it docked, it gave lectures in Philippine culture and history and engaged the people to go back to their bayanihan spirit.

The expedition also visited Brunei, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the waters of Vietnam where the crew shared the message that the seas do not divide but connect and unite these countries with the Philippines.

The crew is composed of former Mt. Everest summit climbers like Valdez that included Leo Oracion (the first Filipino to reach the summit of Mt. Everest in May 2006); Erwin “Pastour” Emata (the second Filipino to reach the tip of Everest), Janet Belarmino (the youngest mother to reach the tip of Everest); Carina Dayondon (the second Filipina to reach the summit of Everest); Noelle Wenceslao (the first Filipina to reach the summit of Everest); Dr. Ted Esquerra (of the Philippine Coast Guard); Fred Jamili (Valdez’ partner for 30 years and a member of the First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition); Voltaire Velasco (a doctor in environmental physics and the voyage’s weather analyst); Lito Esperar and Mark Lim.

It also has Badjao members.

Valdez said the expedition sailed for 14 months and seven weeks or a total of 13,600 kilometers. The Balangay boats and their crew will leave for Mindanao Thursday night and rejoin their families.

The Balanghai or Balangay boats discovered in 1976 in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, are said to be dating back to 1250 A.D.

Guys, I just passed by South Montilla Blvd a while ago and I saw with my very own eyes, OUR CITY MAYOR Jun Amante wielding a grasscutter (shear), cutting the shrubbery (bushes) and cleaning up an island together with some workers! :ohno:

yup....he have been spotted several times cleaning up a sidewalk (if he is not busy during weekends) together with our street cleaners. (away from media limelight and without PR fanfare)

the bottomline here is this.....if a Mayor and a Orthopedics Surgeon at that can have the humility of picking up a garbage pile one stupid city resident threw at a stteet or cut grass that not even a few of us here have that eagerness of cleaning even our own backyard....WHY CAN'T WE ???? Kung kabalo mu putol ug punit ug basura ang mayor....WHY CAN'T WE???

so kuya....taas taas na ra ba sagbot fronting your lawn :)

Balangay Masawa hong Butuan Homebound
January 23, 2011 at 7:05 PM
Text By: Jorge B. Navarra – Butuan Global Forum

In the morning of January 21, 2011, “Balangay MASAWA HONG BUTUAN” arrived in Sangley Point after more than an hour of sailing in Manila Bay from CCP Harbour Square. The crew was privileged to have on board the following guest passengers: Laurice Guillen-Feleo, her daughter Ina Feleo, Bibsy Carballo, Behn Cervantes, Nestor Torre, his mother Isabel Urbina-Torre, Nestor’s niece Angeli and nephew John, Djanin Cruz and brother Bodie Cruz (children of Tirso Cruz III), and TV reporters from Manila and Hongkong.

“Balangay MASAWA HONG BUTUAN” is returning to its home port in Luna Compound, Barangay Bading in Butuan City. “Balangay SAMA TAWI-TAWI” is escorting MASAWA HONG BUTUAN all the way to Butuan. The first balangay replica to be built for the Voyage of the Balangay, “Balangay DIWATA NG LAHI”, has been transferred to Coast Guard headquarters where it will undergo processing as a boat relic exhibit in the National Museum.

The three balangays went on an epic journey to 8 countries in Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, covering a total distance of more than 14,000 kilometers and encountering about 14 storms and typhoons at sea. The balangay flotilla stopped over in 122 ports of call (not counting places previously visited). Big crowds welcomed the balangays and the crew of 37 men and 3 women.

A grand welcome awaits “Balangay MASAWA HONG BUTUAN” during its arrival on February 4, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the PPA pantalan (port) in downtown Butuan City. The Butuan-built balangay is returning to the home of the balangay boats – BUTUAN!

Not only that regj , congested naman gud pud diha dapit because of those houses & retail stores/shops nearby nga nag dikit2. It's not bagay for BSP to be located there.

According to my brother, who works in one of the banks here, Central Bank would need bigger land for their building & parking space wide enough to allow an Armored car to manoeuvre a full turn circle without hitting a curb or any parked cars.

He heard Malvar offered his lot somewhere in the city pero sudlunon man gud,
wala nisugot ang Cantral Bank. They want it to be anywhere along the highway nga kanang malabyan daw.

I have no update yet about the location of that lot mentioned by our friend nga nakit-an na sa BSP.

The courageous populace from the different towns, cities, and provinces of Northern and Southern part of Mindanao were gathered together to witness this momentous event of the year, the Kahimunan Festival 2011 held recently at the Sports Complex Barangay Libertad, Butuan City.

This activity was made successful through the exerted effort and benevolent support of the city mayor of Butuan, Ferdinand M. Amante Jr. who was glad that a multitude witnessed the said event.

With him was his wife who is the current chairperson of the City Tourism Council, which was the office tasked to ensure the success of the event; she was accompanied by the lay workers of Libertad Parish, Butuan City.

Vice-Mayor Lawrence Lemuel Fortun and members of the city council of Butuan were also witness to the successful festivities. They also extended their gratitude to the participants, especially to the contingent from the city of Gingoog and Esperanza, Agusan del Sur. Some contingents came from the different schools of Butuan City.

Audie Ocampo, chairperson of the City Tourism of Gingoog, commented that the activity was well-organized and that he was thankful for the warmth extended by all Butuanons.

The Agusan National High School garnered the Grand Prize Award which received P200,000; the First Runner Up was awarded to the contingent from Esperanza, Agusan del Sur with the amount of P150, 000. The 2nd Runner Up with the award of P120,000 went to the contingent from Gingoog City.

“No lunch break” policy

Free complimentary goodies gikan kang Mayor Jun Amante.

Agusan Sur social welfare office served 64,255 flood victims
By: David M. Suyao

AGUSAN SUR, Jan. 24 -- The Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWD) office of Agusan del Sur has served 64,255 flood victims since the floods hit the entire province on the first week of this year.

Provincial Social Welfare chief Josefina Bajade said that since the first day that flood waters rushed, taking lives, crashing houses and properties, her office in Patin-ay, Prosperidad, has been receiving people affected by the floods, seeking for help, mostly food and clothing.

“On January 3, Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza already called me and instructed me to do everything to produce the most needed items that the flood victims will need, and coordinate with the municipal social welfare offices so that relief goods distribution will be in order and fair. I also coordinated with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Center so that my office will have the information we need for our direction in extending help, and for orderly distribution of relief goods,” Mrs. Bajade said.

To date, part of the five percent calamity funds of the provincial government were utilized to purchase some 1,300 sacks of rice, 640 cases of sardines, 888 boxes of noodles, 150 boxes instant coffee, 128 boxes of milo and five bags of sugar. GMA Kapuso Foundation have also extended 1,756 family packs composed of three kilos rice, three tins sardines, 3 packs noodles and used clothing to some 1,756 families while the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Office have also extended 800 family packs to 800 families and each family pack is composed of three kilos rice, three tins sardines, three tins corned beef, three packs noodles and one pact milk.

Mrs. Bajade said, everybody in her office has given their share to help. They wake up early in the morning and work late at night, repacking the relief goods so that they will be ready the following day.

“No one is spared in our office. Everybody help in repacking the relief goods so that everything will be ready the next day. Each pack contains three kilos of rice, three tins of sardines and three packs of noodles. We also continue to solicit from kind hearted people in the community to give anything that they can, including blankets, mosquito nets, used clothing because we know our brothers and sisters, especially the children and women, need them,” Mrs. Bajade said.

To date, 7,982 families already receive relief goods from the provincial government of Agusan del Sur, aside from the relief goods given by the GMA Kapuso Foundation and the Department of Social Welfare and Development Caraga Region to other victims. (PIA-Agusan del Sur)

Feature: Abaca industry in Sibagat: a mirror of honest and effective cooperation
By: David M. Suyao

It all started as a past time activity of farmers’ wives planting abaca in their vacant farm lots. Farmers used to harvest their matured abaca plants in pieces and clean them manually and sell them raw in the town market by kilo. It was the practice of Barangay Sinai where the soil is suitable for growing abaca.

Until one day, while “Nang Rona”, a farmer’s wife was in the market selling her abaca, a buyer and an expert in abaca saw the quality of the abaca she sold. With a little conversation between “Nang Rona” and the buyer they both agreed that the latter will visit Sinai, and see how the farmers grow abaca. That was the start when farmers in Sinai were encouraged to plant more abaca in the area.

When the demand for raw abaca grew in the market the local government of Sibagat was alerted and conducted a survey in Sinai. They found out that the abaca plantation became widespread in the area. Consequently, they helped organize the group of women, mostly wives of farmers who were engaged in abaca weaving.

In the year 2003, the Sinai women’s organization was registered as an enterprise as Sibagat Abaca Weavers Association (SAWA). Their early years were marked with many challenges, foremost of which was on how to draw a number of weaving hours among the members, so that a collective production can entice the exporter to consider them as subcontractor, as their production was hardly a hundred woven sinamay per week. These women need to be assured of income for the association to get a marketing contract.

Cognizant of the need to improve their productivity and serve their potential market, the association’s members were trained on fiber processing, “Tinagak making”, sinamay weaving, and loom waving. As months and years went by, SAWA co-existed and competed with existing cooperatives engaged in the fiber trading business. The association also participated in production promotion activities. As a result, they started supplying the traders of the fiber-craft capitals, regions 5 and 8.

They also began to understand the value of retaining in the barangay the value adding activities. Sibagat has been a host to a number of local study missions from other provinces interested to learn the technology from plantation to sinamay production.

Sinamay, being the end product of abaca fiber, passes through series of processes. Each process employs people from harvesting, stripping, knotting (tagak) to weaving. The enterprise directly and indirectly employs 10 strippers, 203 knotters, 42 weavers and farm workers. With the annual expansion of 20 hectares abaca plantation since 2006, the industry will surely generate a thousand job opportunity. This is how the sinamay production generated employment in the area.

Their best practices and product quality did not go unnoticed. The UNIDO project office in Davao decided to document and manualize SAWA. The manual serves as a reference of the abaca community livelihood projects in the UNIDO project areas.

With SAWA’s intervention and prodding to the different agencies, it has generated P5.5 million investment for abaca enterprise development.

In the year 2006 alone, SAWA has acquired the amount of P78,000 from the local LGU Sibagat for the skills enhancement training on bag making using sinamay fabric which include provision of sewing machines and materials for the bag business. Another P3,849,470 from PACAP, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Provincial government and the municipal government of Sibagat for the upscaling abaca production and processing which include the expansion of abaca plantation, additional loom waving and and stripping machines, working capital, construction of production center and land acquisition for the building. In 2007, they acquired another P80,500 from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)/ One Town-One-Product (OTOP) DTI/ Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) and LGU Sibagat for enhancing production capacity of abaca sinamay and another P32,000 from DTI OTOP for abaca plantation establishment.

Apart from providing employment in the community, the abaca industry in Sibagat has also helped in the rehabilitation of farm-to-market roads in the locality that will make transportation of the products easy. Among those notable FMR are: FMR from sitio Canete to Barangay Sinai, FMR from national highway to barangay Kauswagan, FMR from Barangay Villangit to Barangays San Isidro and Magsaysay, FMR from Barangay Magsaysay to Sta. Cruz, FMR from Barangay Wawa to Barangay Kioya and FMR leading to Barangay Padiay.

Today, not only SAWA but the entire abaca product industry continue its successful operation in the municipality of Sibagat, generating jobs, and helping the communities. (PIA-Agusan del Sur)
