Financial mngt. training for IPOs, SHGs set
By: Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, March 4 (PIA) – In its effort to develop the skills on Indigenous Peoples Organizations (IPOs) and IP Community Self-Help Groups (SHGs), The Indigenous Peoples Development Programme (IPDP)-Caraga on Wednesday conducted Financial Management Training at Prince Hotel, this city.

With 20 officers of the four SHGs and IPOs of Santiago, Agusan del Norte who belong to Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) No. 134, and five officers of the SHG for abaca production in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur belonging to CADT 093, the training is primarily aimed at helping the IPOs and SHGs enhance their knowledge in the conduct of IPO and SHG meetings and preparation of finance-related resolutions.

Also, the training will develop the participants’ skills in performing simple bookkeeping or records-keeping.

It is also expected that the participants will appreciate personal and collective values required in managing finances and resources.

Further, with the participants implementing what they’ve learned from the training, they will able to set up practical and sound financial management system and able to formulate a practical and effective internal financial control mechanism.

Another batch of participants will be scheduled to undergo same training on March 7 to 9, 2011 under CADT 089, composed of 15 officers of three Cabadbaran SHGs and five officers of the Cabadbaran IPO. Venue of the event will be at Kalahi Training Center, Veruela, Agusan del Sur.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) works with indigenous peoples through enabling policies that engage them in exercising a full range of rights, including those delineated in the Philippine Constitution, the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA) and the nation’s medium-term development plans. CDA conducts forum on “Understanding Electric Cooperatives”
By: Jennifer P. Gaitano

BUTUAN CITY, Mar. 4 (PIA) –- The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Caraga extension office here recently conducted the “Understanding Electric Cooperatives Forum” with the general theme: “Key towards enhancing rural electrification and consumer-members empowerment”, at the Almont Hotel’s Inland Resort, this city.

CDA-Caraga Regional Director Manuela Pelaez and PFCCO Butuan City & Agusan del Norte Manager Lancelot “Allan” Padla emphasized the forum was initiated so that the public could have a better understanding on the issue – whether or not the Agusan del Norte Electric Cooperatives (ANECO) be registered under the CDA from the National Electrification Administration (NEA).

Also, Mr. Angelito Sacro, Chief of the Cooperative Projects and Development Assistance Division (CPAD) based in central office discussed the procedural guidelines in the conduct of Referendum of Electric Cooperatives (EC’s) registered with the NEA under P.D. 269, as amended, which opt to register with the CDA as provided in Article 127, 128 and 134 (2) of Republic Act 9520 otherwise known as the Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008.

“The purpose of the guidelines is to facilitate the proper conduct of referendum among ECs registered with the NEA, as amended, which opt to register with CDA in Article 127, 128 and 134 (2) of the Code,” Sacro stressed.

ANECO supplies electricity power to Butuan City, and 11 municipalities of Agusan del Norte, namely: Las Nieves, Remedios Trinidad Romualdez (RTR), Cabadbaran, Santiago, Tubay, Magallanes, Jabonga, Kitcharao, Nasipit, Buenavista and Carmen.

The forum was sponsored by the Philippine Federation of Credit Cooperatives (PFCCO) Butuan City and Agusan del Norte Chapter in coordination with the Regional Cooperative Development Council (RCDC) Caraga and People’s Movement for Sustainable Economic Development.(PIA-Caraga)

i would like to think that they (tropical meatshop) only hung their banner at the front so it would be visible from the motorists and the passersby. i hope i'm correct.

have you also noticed that grand palace restaurant also placed a banner at ronwood saying that they're already open? so maybe tropical meatshop just did the same.

usually, the front spaces or corner spaces have higher rental fees so high-end establishments commonly get those spots. building administrators would also prefer known brands to be their frontliners.

watcha think?:)

i would like to think that they (tropical meatshop) only hung their banner at the front so it would be visible from the motorists and the passersby. i hope i'm correct.

have you also noticed that grand palace restaurant also placed a banner at ronwood saying that they're already open? so maybe tropical meatshop just did the same.

usually, the front spaces or corner spaces have higher rental fees so high-end establishments commonly get those spots. building administrators would also prefer known brands to be their frontliners.

watcha think?:)

:bash: :D

if that will be the case, ronwood will be like a river...it has two banks, LOL!:lol::lol:

i still don't like the idea of having two banks as frontliners. what will happen during nighttime? that area will be dull coz patay ang sa front.

Get ready for DavNor-Bukidnon road opening-RDR

by Jeanevive D. Abangan
-PIA

DAVAO DEL NORTE, -- Davao del Norte Provincial Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario has asked his constituents to prepare for the opening of Davao del Norte-Bukidnon Road which he envisions to spin economic activities and create economic opportunities.
In an interview with the media yesterday (Mar. 02) at the Tahanan ng Gobernador, Del Rosario expected that the completion of the national road passing through the town of Talaingod will push through by next year.
“When that (would be) materialized I cannot imagine the activity that will happen here in our province. I am encouraging our people in Davao del Norte to prepare because a lot of business opportunities will come about due to this highway,” he said.
The P1.5 billion Talaingod(Davao del Norte)- Bukidnon Road is a 58-kilometer large-scale infrastructure project of the national government that is expected to trigger economic activities between the two provinces particularly along the areas it traverses.
It is considered as an important section of the Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway traversing Butuan City to Davao City and that of the Sayre Highway along Valencia City in Bukidnon going to Cagayan de Oro City.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) looks at it as a key alternate road when major incidents would cause road bottlenecks along Sayre and Phil-Japan Friendship highways.
Travelers will be able to save two and a half hours in going to Cagayan de Oro City from Davao City and vice versa, should they take the Talaingod-Bukidnon Road, much lesser than the time they spend traveling through Davao-Calinan-Bukidnon Road.
Del Rosario bared bringing a delegation of town and city mayor of Davao del Norte to Valencia City, Bukidnon in January this year to know “what’s going on with the other side of the road.”
He found out that the construction of a P230 million-bridge crossing the Pulangi River in Bukidnon was causing a delay.
But as soon as that would be up and completed, the Davao del Norte-Bukidnon Road will spell economic activities in both provinces as the distance of traveling to northern Mindanao will be cut by about 40 percent, he said.
While the transport traffic from Bukidnon is expected to end up in the cities of Tagum and Panabo, Del Rosario has seen the need for the municipalities of Talaingod, Sto. Tomas, and Braulio E. Dujali to prepare as access roads connecting the national road to Bukidnon will pass through them.
He looks at the town of Braulio E. Dujali as a good place to serve as a resting area for travelers going to and fro Bukidnon.
The circumferential road connecting the towns of Kapalong, San Isidro , Asuncion, and New Corella is also expected to boom once the Davao del Norte-Bukidnon Road will be completed.
“It would be easy for people from Cebu, Bohol, to come to Davao del Norte,” he said referring to town-mates of Cebuano and Bol-anon residents who will find it easier to come to the province via Cagayan de Oro once the national road is done.

there are actually meat shops even in most upscale food strip malls Jsl....it just depends how it is marketed.....like if they sell hungarian sausages and german franks and angus beef.....then thats sossy

anyways, tropical meatshop might not be putting up a branch at ronwood.

Butuan eyes major foreign investment
March 5, 2011, 6:33pm

BUTUAN CITY – A group of Malaysian and Korean businessmen were at this region’s capital city recently to invest in a multi-million-peso agricultural plantation which could spur the continuing economic growth here, a city official said Saturday.

These foreign businessmen are eyeing to get a share of the 56,000 hectares of the former logging concession area already offered by the government for equal sharing.

The official said once the Malaysian and Korean businessmen start making investments here, officials expect an increase in city revenue, employment and livelihood generation.

“We are looking forward to make these foreign business group program implemented this year and beyond,” said City Councilor Ryan Anthony Culima, as he requested to temporarily withheld the names of these big business groups from Malaysia and Korea who already paid a courtesy call to City Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr. (Mike U. Crismundo)

guys, i've been to bancasi this afternoon. i saw the following:

1. road widening work is now until beyond the entrance to chinese cemetery if you're going to CDO.

2. land filling activity at the property in front of the airport compound. the property is quite huge. (probably a hotel or Gaisano Super City West, hehehe:lol:).

3. ongoing construction at the Phoenix property. probably a car care center.

4. ongoing construction of PNP Regional Hospital. property is now fenced but luckily when we passed by, the gate was open and i saw that they are now working with the ground floor.

5. Petron Libertad (just across sports complex) is almost done. it's a small gasoline station. it might be a Petron Bulilit Station.

6. ongoing construction of a 2-storey building near Libertad public market.

Agusan del Norte gov says FREEDOM is a catalyst to eradicate poverty
By: Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, March 7 (PIA) –- Agusan del Norte Governor Erlpe John M. Amante on Monday said the initiatives of the Foundation for Rural Enterprise and Ecology Development of Mindanao(FREEDOM) served as a catalyst to eradicate poverty not only in the province but also in the whole region of Caraga.

In his welcome message delivered by Provincial Administrator Percianita Racho during the workshop on Micro Enterprise Development in Agusan del Norte held at the Provincial Training Center, Capitol, this city, Gov. Amante emphasized that poverty remains a serious problem in the country and the official is grateful to the organizers of FREEDOM of their endeavor to assist the poorest regions in the country in the establishment of micro-enterprise business.

“Truly, FREEDOM will diminish rural poverty, establish jobs generation, among others and that many people will benefit from this program,” the Governor said commending the efforts of the organization.

Gov. Amante also said the partnership of government and stakeholders is crucial in the sustainabiity of the program. “Thus, I am calling the concerned agencies and stakeholders to do their share,” the official said.

Meanwhile, same activity was also conducted in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur on February 22, 2011 with the presentation of the proposed memorandum of agreement between the participating local government unit and DTI RuMEPP partnership, highlighted the workshop.

FREEDOM was organized in the Philippines in June 2009 whose purpose is to assist in the empowerment of the Indigenous Peoples communities in the Philippines for their sustainable growth and development and preserve their cultural traditions. (PIA-Caraga)

RuMEPP serves 19 provinces-cum-project beneficiaries
By: Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, March 7 (PIA) -– In its effort to uphold rural poverty reduction through increased economic development, the Rural Micro-Enterprise Promotion Programme (RuMEPP) has already served 19 targeted provinces for the program to be implemented, considered as the poor provinces of the country, thus revealed by Mr. Jonathan Tagalo Jr., RuMEPP Provincial Officer during the workshop on Micro Enterprise Development in Agusan del Norte held on Monday at the Provincial Training Center, Capitol, this city.

Of the 19 province beneficiaries, Tagalo said four of which come from Caraga Region, “thus, all provinces in the region are beneficiaries of this poverty alleviation program,” Tagalo added.

Caraga Region is composed of four provinces with six cities, four of which are component cities. Said provinces are Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.

RuMEPP is a seven-year poverty alleviation project of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) based in Rome, Italy and the Government of the Philippines with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as the lead agency and the United Nation Office for Project Services (UNOPS) as cooperating institution.

The project also aimed to create jobs creation and rural incomes for 200,000 poor rural households by increasing numbers of new and existing rural micro-enterprises that expand and operate profitability and sustainability.

RuMEPP has three components composed of Microfinance Credit and Support that aimed to increase the volume of finance available to micro-enterprises. The second component, Micro-Enterprise Promotion and Development will provide efficient, cost effective and demand-responsive business development services to rural micro-enterprises. Programme and Policy Coordination – the third component is aimed to obtain a well-managed programme operating in a positive policy/regulatory environment for micro-enterprises.

From 2005-2012, the projects implemented in the country already reached to some US$ 22.826 million with the first component posted the highest amounting to 18.108 which represents 79.33 percent of the total project cost, followed by the second component which represents 11.44 percent, and the third component with 9.22 percent.

Chicken ‘inato’ is a specialty in this Butuan restaurant

BUTUAN CITY, AGUSAN DEL NORTE—To complete your dining experience in this city, make sure to try the famous chicken inato at Weegol’s Grill Haus.

“Chicken inato is our own version of grilled chicken. It is a personal favorite and I think, locals and tourists pick it from the menu because of its savory and juicy meat, plus its affordable,” said Weegol’s Grill Haus owner Gerry Calo, who inherited the management from his mother, Mercy Calo.

On first bite, chicken inato reminds you of a different take on chicken barbeque with its sweet, nutty flavor and crisp, barely charred skin.

What’s more is that a chicken inato meal consisting of a chicken barbeque with a cup and a half of rice, papaya atsara, and a banana muffin only costs P80.

Other favorites include buko-halo and an assortment of home-made cakes, from banana loaf bread to chocolate and chiffon cakes.

In 1990, the restaurant along Montilla Boulevard was established by Mercy and named it after her husband’s nickname.

The restaurant had an initial capital of P150,000 and only had 13 dining tables, said Gerry.

Today, tourists, particularly surfers heading to Siargao Island, also drop by at Weegol’s Grill Haus on their way to Surigao based on recommendations of other surfers who earlier visited the area, said Gerry.

The native vibe of the restaurant, with wall paintings of local sceneries and dining furniture made of bamboo complements the Filipino dishes at Weegol’s Grill Haus.

Gerry added that they also serve the dishes in banana leaves and encourage diners to use their hands while eating for a truly Pinoy food experience. A hand washing area is available near the kitchen.

As business prospered, another branch called Weegol’s Garden was put up near the Butuan City municipal hall.

“My mother really loves to cook and so on her visit in Dumaguete, she studied how the dish was made. On her return, the business started,” said Gerry, in between checking deliveries of chicken on stick at the restaurant.

In a week, some 500 chicken inato and other grilled favorites are sold in the branch, he noted. Chest freezers for chicken inato are restocked every Sunday.

Other local grill houses where along Montilla when Gerry’s family business started but the entry of multinational fastfood corporations made it difficult for the other businesses to survive.

“I think what made us stick around until today is our unique inato flavor, our hospitable staff and the marketing by word-of-mouth among our diners. I guess that what makes for a successful restaurant business anywhere,” Gerry added.

For this year, Gerry said they are finalizing the details for franchising of the business. At least P2.3 million is needed for the franchise.

SMART , Deutsche Regis increase ICT-enabled schools

Published 22 February 2011, Smart Communications, Inc.)

Ten public schools are set to enjoy the benefits of Internet-aided learning with their inclusion in the Smart Schools Program of Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart).

Smart, in partnership with Deutsche Regis Partners, Inc. and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) recently turned over SSP markers to heads of three schools in Butuan City and three more in Vigan City to formalize their membership in simple ceremonies.

Butuan Central Elementary School, Butuan Science and Technology Education Center and Ampayon Central Elementary School in Butuan City in Mindanao and Vigan Central School, Burgos Memorial School East and Burgos Memorial School West in Vigan City in north Luzon are the first six schools adopted by Deutsche Regis under an agreement signed with Smart and PBSP last year.

Under the agreement, Deutsche Regis funded the provision of hardware, networking and Internet access for 10 public schools under the SSP, Smart’s flagship community service initiative that promotes the use of ICT in basic education through partnerships with public schools officials, its teachers and parents-teachers-community associations (PTCAs).

Part of the funds provided by Deutsche Regis will also go to the inclusion of five public elementary schools in CommuniTeach, another education initiative of Smart that enables concerned groups and individuals within a community to help improve the learning of their academically-challenged, public elementary school students.

Since last year, Smart has been opening up its SSP and CommuniTeach initiatives to corporate partnerships to expand the benefits of ICT in classroom education as well as help more communities provide a better future for underprivileged school kids by helping them improve their academic performance.

Deutsche Regis, which handles the equities business of the Deutsche Bank Group in the Philippines, is among the first to respond to Smart’s invitation since the education initiatives are aligned with the Deutsche Bank Group’s commitment to promote education for underprivileged children as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Agusan del Norte First District Rep. Jose “Joboy” Aquino II led local officials in congratulating Butuan Science and Technology Education Center Principal Restituto Navarro, Ampayon Central Elementary School Principal Fe Puspus and Butuan Central Elementary School Principal Lorna Conde during the turnover ceremony in Butuan City.

In Vigan, City Mayor Eva Marie Medina was on hand to encourage the heads of the three schools to maximize the benefits of broadband Internet connectivity, access to online content and teacher training provided under the SSP.

Launched in 2004, the SSP now counts 300 member public schools all over the country. Smart’s efforts to promote ICT in public school education is part of its ‘Internet for All’ advocacy and a major undertaking under Kabalikat, its corporate social responsibility program.

Improve packaging to attract buyers, Agusan del Norte local producers told
By: Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, March 7 (PIA) –- “It is not enough for the local producers to concentrate on the production of their products, they must also give concern on the quality of packaging they have for their products to attract buyers” thus said Mr. Tony Peralta, Executive Director of Foundation for Rural Enterprise and Ecology Development of Mindanao (FREEDOM).

Speaking before the local producers of the province of Agusan del Norte during Monday’s workshop on Micro Enterprise Development in the province held at the Provincial Training Center, Capitol, this city, Peralta said Caraga in general and Agusan del Norte in particular is rich with good products “but the problem falls on the type of packaging… We have to make sure that our packaging will attract the taste of the local and even foreign buyers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Peralta said the products of the region must also be supported by the programs of the tourism industry to ensure that there will be buyers of these products.

Peralta also said Caraganons should patronize the locally-produced products to at least help boost the income of the local producers in the region.

With these developments, Peralta enjoined the local producers to use technology to enhance the design of the packaging of their products. “Good packaging is one of the contributing factors for the buyers to patronize the product,” Peralta disclosed. (PIA-Caraga)

Hey, I just had a quick chat with my friend (tung sa Chinese chamber of commerce) one of the questions I asked him is about that on- going land filling activity in Bancasi (the one you told us about). He said to me " Ah, you must be talking about the Friendship Gate." I was dumbfounded for a sec, ang nasabi ko lang,"really?" & then he said, " yup, kanang dapit sa airport? mao na na siya. himuan pud na ug rotunda diha."

dili man siya rotunda atebunns. if gikan ka sa libertad, ang gatambak is situated at the right side of the highway. kibali in between the highway and airport compound.

i think i saw that site for rotunda, katong naa'y road nga wala pa na-concrete. di man siguro pwede mag-rotunda kung mo-drecho lang man diay ang vehicles. dapat going to 4 directions gyud na di ba?

watcha think?

what do you think it could be? i don't think it's a rotunda.

if ever its Butuan-China Friendship Gate then they must have changed their plan.

Hala, so aside from the Friendship Gate, lain pud diay tung nakit-an nimo nga nag Land filling? Must be the GW? Well actually i asked him too about GWest, pero wala daw siya kadungog ana

possible pod nga frienship gate to pero basin dili na rotunda as stated in the news article posted by bob.

pero think of this: if mao to ang friendship gate, and basing on the location, dili siya makita sa mga tao gikan sa airport kay if padung sila og butuan downtown, dili na malabyan.

what do you think it could be? i don't think it's a rotunda.

if ever its Butuan-China Friendship Gate then they must have changed their plan.

(Mike U. Crismundo)

To be honest with you guys, I am already starting a plantation myself this july, so my prediction is right, it seems many more investors see the potential of butuan....... more than butuanons see them selves. plantations are going to be a big business
