Guys, that Resto I told you about @ Amadeo Lim is sort of part gihapon diay siya ng Grand Palace Restaurant but in a separate lang nga area, entrance & setting. If Grand Palace is a fine dinging Resto, this other resto will be serving in Buffet style food. Duda nako this will be like an Eat-all-you can dining.

atebunns, 2 or 3 ang Masagana Farm Supply sa Langihan. One is along Ochoa Ave. corner J. Satorre and the other is in Andaya St. gawas lang sa bus terminal. murag naa pa'y isa along langihan road nga duol sa JIK.

asa dapit?

::

Guys, there's an U/C in Langihan, opposite corner ng Masagana Farm supply.

If it's not for that mound of gravel I saw outside the enclosed area, I wouldn't have noticed it.

Replication and cross-fertilization of best practices are tried and tested means of building local government's capacities. Such is the case of Butuan City when it decided to build a warehouse adopting the innovative scheme of Marikina City's Centralized Warehousing Management System, a Galing Pook awardee in 2008.

In 2009, Butuan City procurement personnel along with other pilot cities in the Promoting Procurement Efficiency to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals (PROTECT-MDGs) project visited Marikina City and studied its warehouse management system.

In the case of Marikina, from a fragmented supply management, the city cut its personnel engaged in supply bidding by 75%, reduced its storage spending, and built a warehouse that would become the main repository of almost all kinds of supplies - from lumber, nails, electrical components, tiles, and even relief goods. The warehouse is procuring on behalf of the city's 45 departments and is managed by the General Services Office (GSO).

City departments can easily request from the GSO and obtain the materials when in need of supplies (i.e. lumber for the construction of schools). The warehouse replenishes in bulk, conducts competitive bidding and consequently, gets the lowest cost. In 2007, competitive bidding recorded a Php 16 million savings from its 414 programs of work. From an estimated cost of Php 391 million subjected to public bidding, the aggregated amount totalled Php 375 million.

When processing procurement-related documents, Marikina City is also capitalizing on its document electronic tracking system (DTS) to retrieve documents easily and save time.

Meanwhile, Butuan City has already allocated Php 5 million to build the new warehouse. The city has an ongoing city-to-city mentoring activity with Marikina City procurement personnel.

http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/6654/00831.jpg

All of these would not have been possible without the support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) through the PROTECT-MDGs project. The two-year project aims to improve local procurement capacities through upgrading their compliance and intensive knowledge sharing among cities on how to improve public procurement systems and processes.

Each pilot city also received a micro grant to demonstrate innovations addressing local procurement issues. Butuan City submitted the establishment of the warehousing system as the city's demonstration project.

"The city government of Butuan is thankful for having been chosen as one of the pilot cities for the Protect-MDGs Project. Butuan City now has the chance to prove that we support President Aquino's quest for transparency and good governance," said Mayor Ferdinand Amante.

Under a centralized warehousing system, Butuan City is poised to serve as a model in the CARAGA region for a systematic and responsive procurement system that is modeled after the best hardware enterprises in the country.

As centralized warehouse improves supply flow and consistently encourages public bidding due to its wholesale needs, it minimizes pilferage and other similar procurement irregularities. More importantly, it generates savings that can still be allocated to purchase for more textbooks for poor students, to buy more medicines to distribute in more health centers, and to buy food for more feeding programs.

gusto gani nako ma annexed na gyud sa Butuan ang Las Nieves para ma expand pa ang land area sa Butuan....which currently holds the 3rd largest city in land area in Mindanao...

Las Nieves I believed grew because of its direct connection both admoinistratively and geographically to Butuan and NOT to Agusan Norte province

I am not sure if this applies to all Banks, but they say, usually raw, ang opening day

PLDT myDSL’s Awesome Hunt is set to ignite your passion for adventure
April 6, 2011

Awesome is breaking boundaries. That’s why PLDT myDSL, together with the Department of Tourism, marks this occasion with its most exciting event yet.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X1d5EgM9cn0/TZwfEmH0VlI/AAAAAAAACNw/BQFE7KhHTzA/s1600/the+awesome+hunt.jpg

The Awesome Hunt is a competition that pits 8 teams of famous and heavy Internet users against one another in a race that involves the search for hidden gems in key locations all over the Philippines. Each city or town offers something unique, but what ties them all together? They are the starting points for PLDT myDSL in establishing a wider reach with now over 200,000 additional lines installed all over the country.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sdJZbvvbugU/TZwhUAvXxxI/AAAAAAAACN0/9gD-4QFLNcU/s1600/awesomehunt1.jpg

Follow the teams as they explore each city via pre-determined venues that highlight the beauty of what each has to offer. Whether clues lead them to a restaurant, shop, or a historical landmark, the teams are made to complete specific tasks while documenting the experience and posting them here.

Credit for creating the most adventure-inducing online travelogue earns each member of the winning team P50,000, a one-year free PLDT myDSL subscription, a free trip to a popular summer getaway by Cebu Pacific (It’s time everyone Juan flies!), a brand new Sony Vaio laptop and Cybershot Digital Camera and a Pizza Party Package from Yellowcab Pizza Co. How it all plays out depends on a select panel of judges and, of course, by you! So support your favorite teams by keeping it right here because registration and voting will begin soon.

this supermarket will have 2 cinemas pa gyud daw. maybe they're trying to give Empress and Crown Theatres a re-birth, hehehe.:banana:

Balanghayan Grow a Million Tree Project launching set
by Nora CL Molde

BUTUAN CITY, April 7 (PIA) – The city government of Butuan will launch “Balanghayan Grow A Million Tree Project” a flagship program of the new administration on Saturday, April 9, this city.

Mayor Ferdinand Amante,Jr. said this is a tree conversion project that aims to reduce the vulnerability of Butuan City to natural disasters.

The launching will commence with a series of activities to include: “Commitment Signing” of the undertaking by the stakeholders, and by “Ceremonial Tree Planting” in six identified barangay sites of Butuan city. Identified barangays include Ampayon, Buhangin, Mahay, Bancasi, Libertad and Ambago.

Amante also said the project is in support of the national government’s efforts in mitigating the impact of climate change through the “Billion trees Project” of President Benigno S. Aquino III.

Amante also enjoined partners in the protection of our environment for the welfare of the present and future generations to participate in the project’s series of activities. (PIA-Caraga)

OMG! 3,740 students??? :uh:

Where are they going to house all these Delegates?

Timber City Academy students together with 3 other schools will be performing a dance number to welcome the guests. They will be at the Airport for the 3 flights from Manila. Lunch for the dancers are provided by the DOTourism.

My nephew brought with him some props in which one of those is a paddle.

MANILA, Philippines - Take the concept of Amazing Race, which brings participants to different destinations and allows them to experience diverse cultures, with exciting challenges to accomplish.

Combine that with the format of Survivor, which maroons players in an island and groups them as tribes. They are made to display their strength, agility, endurance, willpower and determination to complete the obstacles.

Those two internationally popular reality shows apparently became the inspiration for PLDT myDSL to launch Awesome Hunt, a competition that takes participants to eight cities around the country for a thrilling adventure.Sixteen celebrities coming from a cross section of entertainment, sports, cyberspace and society are brought together for the first time in the much-awaited competition. The contestants are grouped into eight teams of two, with the challenge to come up with great online travel features.

This time, the web will play an integral part in the contestant’s tasks. After completing every challenge, the teams are required to creatively document each task and post it on the PLDT myDSL Watchpad before moving on to the next one.

The entries to be posted on the web should ignite anyone’s passion for adventure. Hence, the teams will be compelled to use their resourcefulness and imagination to the hilt to come up with the best coverage in each city.

Marco Alcaraz of My Lover, My Wife teams up with Machete leading lady Bela Padilla to rediscover the historic city of Butuan. MYX VJ Ton Vergel de Dios and GMA 7’s I Heart You Pare mainstay Ryza Cenon trek to the university town of Dumaguete.

Blogger Jayvee Fernandez runs with Luis Alandy to seek out challenges in Las Piñas, while mother-and-son TV hosts Dolly Anne Carvajal and IC Mendoza cover Laguna.

Controversial Manila tour guide Carlos Celdran and chef/TV host China Cojuangco revisit Quezon City. Starstruck’s Steven Silva and Eat, Bulaga! co-host Daiana Menezes check out Marikina.

Magic 89.9 DJ Mojo Jojo and Between Bites blogger Jane Chua prepare to get familiar with Rizal, while Mark Herras and champion race car drifter Alex Perez race through Cavite.

Hosted by Rhian Ramos, the treasure hunt will lead teams through four pre-determined venues in each city, like, for instance, a restaurant, novelty shop, ukay-ukay, a landmark, the public market or even anybody’s residence.

At stake for the winning team is P50,000 per member, a one-year free PLDT myDSL subscription, trip to a popular summer get-away, brand new laptop and digital camera.

Launched with the Department of Tourism (DOT), Awesome Hunt kicked off yesterday and every PLDT myDSL subscriber can also participate. Simply sign up for Watchpad, which comes free with the subscription. Then visit www.pldtwatchpad.com/awesomehunt to follow the progress of each participating team and vote for the one with the best online travelogue starting today until April 24.

An esteemed panel of judges will choose the winning travelogue and online votes from Watchpad users will also determine the winner.

For PLDT myDSL subscribers, at stake for the Awesome Hunt are laptop, camera and P50,000 in cash for the lucky voter who gets to pick the winning team.

Interestingly, Awesome Hunt is another PLDT myDSL’s innovative event to increase its subscriber base, with some 200,000 additional lines that have been installed to get more households hooked on broadband Internet.

Butuan civilian, police, military officials mark 69th Araw Ng Kagitingan
04/09/2011 | 05:43 PM

BUTUAN CITY — Butuan City civilian, police, and military officials on Saturday joined hands in marking the 69th observance of the Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor), a national holiday in the Philippines that commemorates the fall of Bataan and the gallantry of World War II veterans.

The Araw Ng Kagitingan anniversary rites were held at the local Bantayog Ng Mga Bayani marker inside the compound of the Butuan Library and Museum.

Officials from different government agencies such as the Philippine Veterans Administration Office (PVAO), Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Office of the City Senior Citizens (OCSA) were present to join the commemoration activities.

The Butuan City officials were headed by Mayor Dr. Ferdinand Amante, Jr. and Vice Mayor Lawrence Fortun; while the police and military and officials were headed by Caraga police regional director Chief Supt. Reynaldo and Philippine Army’s 402nd Infantry Brigade Commander Col. Rodrigo Diapana.

The Government officials joined local veterans, their beneficiaries, wives and children in the commemoration activities.

In calling his constituents to honor the heroic deeds of WW II veterans, Mayor Amante said: “Without the veterans who sacrificed lives to defend country’s honor and patrimony, we will not be celebrating the 69th Araw Ng Kagitingan today."

For his part, Chief Supt. Reynaldo S. Rafal thanked the beneficiaries, wives and children of veterans who have passed away for the bravery their forefathers.

Also, he expressed hopes the policemen of today would show the same commitment to serve and protect the country and the people.

“There is no greater heroism one can show for the love of country other than those who are willing to sacrifice and die for the homeland. We, at the Philippine National Police is getting our inspiration, our courage from those who passed ahead of us and fought valiantly for the our nation. For that, I salute you our veterans," Rafal said.

Meanwhile Philippine Army’s 402nd Infantry Brigade’s Diapana lauded the support shown by the wives, children, relatives and all beneficiaries to the WW II veterans.

“Without your physical and moral support for your father veterans, husband veterans and veteran grandparents, they would have lost faith and the love to struggle and fight for freedom," Diapana said.

Vice Mayor Fortun also thanked the relatives of the veterans present during the celebration saying, “the heroism of your forefathers, veteran fathers and uncle is our aspiration to serve our people today and in the generations to come."

On the other hand, veteran Haji Atega, president of Veterans Association of Agusan del Norte, called on government to increase benefits of the beneficiaries of the veterans.

“Now, more than ever, is the time for our country and people to show resiliency in all difficulties and obstacles the country is facing as the hardship veterans experienced in their times is far more difficult than what the Filipinos are facing today," Atega said.

In response to Atega, Mayor Amante said: “More than ever, now is the time for every Filipino to show the veterans spirit in them, courageous and never falters in the fight for freedom and justice." — Ben Serrano/LBG, GMA News

someone told me the same thing nga next month ang groundbreaking but it's a different person informed by Bishop Pueblos. theory ni bob kay basin si bishop pueblos ang mag-officiate sa groundbreaking or apil siya sa mga invited "big people" of butuan.

giconfirm ni councilor ryan culima during the interview this morning sa bombo nga next month na maggroundbreaking ang rob mall and he confirmed that the sm city will be at the plaza property near gmall so parang sa gensan pala malapit lang sa gmall ang sm city din . baka lipservice lang to ni culima hbeing good at that we have to see

of course! it's the big "D".^^

funny kaayo si dr. de jesus ganina coz he said. magstart na daw ang rob og construct next month. i said "sinong may sabi doc?"

tubag pod dayon siya "Si Bishop Pueblos!".:nuts::nuts:

unsa'y labot ni bishop pueblos? hehehe. basin ni-confess si Papa P sa iya na he did something very wrong. hahaha.:lol::lol:

Totoo na siguro itong info mo romix about Rob's groundbreaking next month, it also confirms Bishop Pueblos' statement (above quote highlighted in red).

don't compare it to taguig bob coz understandable lang man nga gamay na lang space sa metro manila and dili man scary ang mga cemeteries sa manila kay daghan structures, daghan tao sa palibot. pero kining sa bancasi kung hotel man gani ni, sila lang sa cemetery with a view of mt. mayapay then it's so silent pa. hehehe.:lol::lol:

FSUU Campus: a Wireless Internet hotspot

When internet access through wireless-fidelity technology (better known as wi-fi) became a craze more than three years ago, Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) started building its own wireless internet access infrastructure. While it used to have limited locations for wi-fi access points, today, everyone in the university is now fully enjoying a campus-wide wi-fi internet access. Internet hotspots are everywhere in the university campuses. In May 2010, the technical staff of ITSD strategically installed wireless fidelity access points (with coverage of 100 meters/AP) all-over the buildings in the College and Basic Ed campuses, where every officially registered Wi-fi user can access the internet at their convenience.

As of this writing, the university has over 300 registered users at the college and Basic Ed campuses, and more applicants are entertained daily. This service is exclusive only to Urian students, faculty, staff and administrators . If you’ve been to any of the campuses, you wouldn’t be surprised to see many people glued to their mobile devices, from laptops, netbooks to smart phones. These people are actually enjoying the convenience of wireless internet access service anytime wherever they are in any of the university campuses.

Thats the SOP bob. On the right portion of the Blueprint of the plans submitted for the building permit, theres the different building sections that need to be signed by an architect for the ARCHITECTURAL section for approval. Others are Line and grade, Sanitary, Structural, Electrical and Mechanical. These people from the Building office shall study, correct and approve the plans based on the standards in conformance sa PD 1096 or the Building Code of the Philippines, Fire code, water code, National Structural Code of the Phils, Plumbing Code, Acessibility Law BP 344, Etc. But before that they shall comply for the ECC if the development will be 1hectares up and zoning clearances.

LAhi ang City Architects office, Lahi sad ang Architect sa Building Section bob sa City Engineer. An city Architects Office is a different department pero optional ra ni cya na icreate nan isa ka City. An city Architect, his work shall only design all architectural works, including urban planning in a City, He also coordinates with other departments for the implementations for their respective projects.

If its deemed necessary for the City Architect to look at the plan and decide for a review for the Building Officials, pwede na cya. The city Architects and City Engineers office shall get their act together.

Usahay man gud bob, dili sad jud makit-an an tanan, lahi ang knowledge ni architect A ug Architect B. MAs nindot if daghan an nakakita sa plan. Pero naa say uban sobra ra ka strict. Like what happened sa Central Warehouse diri sa surigao, they should have finish their permit already before Gaisano started. Tagpakuha man gud sila ug clearance sa CAAP whoch will take 48 years before mahuman kay until now wala paman, dont know sad if ok na ang clearance. But the CITIHardware, Gaisano Capital, wala jud tawon pakuhaa.

he mentioned that wines can be bought per bottle but if the customer can't consume its contents in one night, pwede lang daw i-store sa ilang bar for a certain period lang then pwede ra hutdon during the next visit. i can't remember for how long.

if it's true that it will be on a membership basis, then does it also mean that their filipino and asian cuisine restaurant will also be on a membership basis? same establishment ra baya.

wala na mokaon og moinom if ingon ani ang style. how about those tourists or those filipinos who are on vacation in our city? how about kanang mga nangapil of convention nga mag-night out inig kagabii? daghan baya na sila. don't tell me they would say no to a group of tourists.:bash:

Guys, I just want to share this info from Bishop Pueblos that is passed on to me by my uncle just this evening lang gyud:

1. RLC property ay hindi pala 10 hectares lang as we all know, but it's 14 hectares pala?

2. The SM that will be constructed in that 4 hectare Plaza property in JC Aquino is only a supermarket.

3. SM City will be constructed in a 12 hectare property somewhere in Baan area pag natapos na ang SM supermarket (no mention kung kaninong property ang nabili ng SM in Baan).

Thanks Ms. Bunny...

Better pud for SM nga supermarket lang sa... Up until naay grabe nga investment influx sa Butuan (paging Masao Port and Bancasi Airport), remittances lang ang major source of income sa mga tagadiha para pangmantinar sa operations nila... which is kulang.

I've been praying actually for a Save More in Butuan, dugay na... Everytime makauli ko, mafrustrate lang ko pirme pag mopalit sa Gaisano... Terrible kaayo ilang customer service...

Kinahanglan pud magconstruct ug another bridge, or i-widen ang Magsaysay before magstart or during contruction of SM City Butuan... Imagine the traffic pag ang easy route is through Magsaysay lang. Layo-layo man gud ang pwesto sa Macapagal if indeed sa Baan itukod.

Mao lagi ilang giingon, basi malugi si Macky if he'll do this & make it exclusive for members only. Pero since open ra man diay to the public according to his FB, then ok ra.

But let's say naay membership, di ba you get to enjoy certain priviledges? (like in hotels, golf course, etc) Basi ingon ani ang gi plano ni Macky at first, naay membership pero open to the public? I'm not really sure.

with SM, ok ra gihapon bisan savemore. it's a big blessing and if they are going to put a mall in baan (which was rumored long time ago), much better.
we are not in a position to demand something di ba? hehehe. let's be humble and hopeful always.

go go go butuan!^^

True that. I also don't think that the current traffic situation in Butuan warrants construction of another bridge. It would be better if resources would be funneled towards the completion of the bypass road.

Anyhow, I hope developments in Butuan is in accordance with the city's zoning plan. It would be detrimental to food security if encroachment on agricultural lands remains to be unabated.

Retired CJ Puno accepts adviser role for Butuan City greening project
By Ben Serrano

http://positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Cities_And_Towns_23/Retired_CJ_Puno_accepts_adviser_role_for_Butuan_City_greening_project.shtml

BUTUAN CITY, April 11 (PNA) -- Retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno on Saturday accepted the invitation of the Butuan City government, through Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr., to be the city government’s adviser/consultant in the city’s greening project.
The project, which was launched recently, is the first of its kind among cities in the country.

The retired Chief Magistrate was in Butuan City Saturday together with Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary Ernesto Adobo as special guests and speakers in the launching of Butuan City’s Balanghayan Grow a Million Tree Project.

The project aims to plant at least three million trees, with at least one million tree planted per year, between 2011 and 2013, in 86 urban and rural barangays of this city.

At a press conference during the project launching at the covered court of Barangay Bit-os, Butuan City, Mayor Amante announced he would recruit the former Chief Justice as legal consultant and adviser to the city government’s greening project, including anti-illegal logging and environmental protection drive.

Puno readily accepted the challenge to become adviser and consultant of the Butuan City government pro-bono.

However, Puno advised the city government to sustain the Grow a Million Tree project, saying he wants the project to succeed where he can see the trees planted grow.

Puno, who admitted his latest advocacy now is planting trees after retiring from the High Court, said he is hoping that people will not only be active in planting trees but also continuously take care of the tree seedlings from the time they are planted up to the time they can already stand on their own to grow.

“The secret there is to make the community and people owned the tree planting project so that they take care of it until it will be fully grown,” Puno said.

For his role as legal consultant in the Butuan City government’s anti-illegal logging and environmental protection program, the former Supreme Court Chief Justice admitted it will be a tough job.

“The key for successful prosecution of environmental violators to pay for the crimes they commit is total people’s organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and multisector involvement in the campaign,” Puno said.

Puno said planting trees is one of the mitigating measures to combat the disastrous effects of climate change. He noted that the country’s forest cover has deteriorated over the years to only 24 percent,

“The ideal forest cover of the country must be 54 percent, so nakikita ninyo na napaka-delikado na ang nangyayari sa ating bansa, tayo’y nagiging biktima na sa climate change,” he said

“Dahil din sa kawalan natin ng forest cover, yung ating mga plants at hayop ay unti-unting nawawala o namamatay. Dito po sa Butuan at Surigao, madalas din po na nababaha, kaunting ulan lang, baha na” Puno said.

Puno said he and DENR Undersecretary Adobo came to Butuan City precisely to see to it how the One Million-Tree a Year project will work.

Puno said one thing he got attracted to the project is that everybody in the community owns it, “and in that case this project will not fail because this project is owned by the people.”

The DENR undersecretary, for his part, said that the launching was timely in time of President Benigno S. Aquino III’s signing of an executive order requiring all government agencies to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares of land staring this year up to 2016.

Adobo said that the assurance of the Department of Education to help in the tree planting project, whereby one pupil is required to produce 10 tree seedlings, can help boost President Aquino’s tree planting program.

"Apart from we see trees being planted, the impact of awareness for environmental awareness and protection through this project is great because we are slowly educating Filipinos, slowly but surely,” Adobo said. (PNA)

Launching of the International Year of the forests set
by Nora CL Molde

BUTUAN CITY, April 11 (PIA) – Year 2011 is National Year of the Forests.

The launching of the International Year of the Forests Declaration and the National Greening Program (NGP) of the Aquino administration in Caraga region is scheduled on April 15, 2011.

According to National Economic and Development Authority and Mt. Mayapay Rehabilitation Task Force chairperson Carmencita S. Cochingco, the launching activity for Butuan City and Agusan del Norte will be held at the Mt. Mayapay Rehabilitation Project at the military reservation in barangay Nongnong, this city.

President Benigno Simeon Aquino III on March 15 issued Presidential Proclamation No. 125, declaring year 2011 as the National Year of the Forests. Said proclamation is in accordance with the UN General Assembly’s declaration of the year 2011 as the International Year of the Forests, which aims at raising the level of awareness of the people worldwide on sustainable forest management, conservation and development.

The NGP, seeks to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares nationwide in six years, from 2011 to 2016. (NCLM-PIA-Caraga)

Catholics prepare for 500th anniversary

Two rival communities launch their campaign to host half-millennium celebrations

Julian Labores and Ben Serrano, Manila
Philippines
April 11, 2011

http://www.ucanews.com/2011/04/11/catholics-prepare-for-500th-anniversary/#

Catholics in the central Philippine province of Southern Leyte have started a 10-year campaign for a grand celebration of the 500th anniversary of the first Catholic Mass in the country, which was supposedly held on Limasawa Island.

but people in the southern city of Butuan are making similar preparations, claiming that the first Catholic Mass in the country was held there and not on Limasawa Island on March 31, 1521.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), which is apparently supporting the Limasawa claim, said the Diocese of Maasin in Southern Leyte marked the 490th anniversary of the Mass on March 31.

Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr. led a separate celebration of the 490th year of the first Catholic Easter Mass on March 31.

Father Joesilo Amalla, a historian and curator of the Diocese of Butuan Museum, celebrated an all Latin Mass or Tridentine Mass.

Local artists re-enacted the first Mass at the city’s Rizal Park fronting the St. Joseph Catholic cathedral.

The CBCP said the 10-year countdown has for its theme “Renewed Evangelization,” consistent with the CBCP proclamation of the same theme for the decade.

Bishop Cantillas said the golden anniversary of the Maasin Diocese in 2018 “is another reason to strongly resolve to renew our life of faith.”

Archbishop Jose Palma of Cebu presided over the March 31 Mass in a field overlooking the Shrine of the First Holy Mass in Southern Leyte.

Butuan historians, however, insist that the first Catholic Mass was held at the Buod Promontory in Butuan City where a huge cross and a Balanghai (traditional Filipino boat) marker were built.

Father Amalla said some journals of an early Spanish expedition revealed that a Mass took place on “Mazaua” in Butuan City not Limasawa in Leyte.

Local government officials said regardless of the controversy, the first Easter Mass is more symbolic than substantive to the evangelization of the Catholic Church and the advancement of Christianity.

Southern Leyte congressman Roger Mercado said he is proposing to declare March 31 every year as a national non-working holiday to highlight the significance of the coming of Christianity to the Philippines and in Asia.

Archbishop Palma lauded the collaboration among the clergy, government officials, military and civilians as demonstrated by the enthusiastic yet orderly celebration of the event.
